Mixing Perfect Vocals with the Pultec EQP-1A
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 лип 2024
- In this video, watch Grammy-winning engineer, Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), break down the advantages of using sweet, musical Pultec curves on vocals. Learn how he treats a vocal stem with the UAD Pultec EQP-1A plug-in, massaging any harshness out of the top end while preserving presence, and boosting the singer's chest tone without introducing mud.

Building on a decade of the world’s most intensive modeling research, UA has recreated the famed Pultec EQ experience as plug-ins - ones that are nearly indistinguishable from the original analog hardware.
The Pultec Passive EQ Plug-In Collection for UAD-2 and Apollo hardware includes the ultimate plug-in emulations of Pulse Techniques’ original passive EQs. With painstakingly modeled amplifier sections now onboard, the Pultec EQ Collection "breathes" like the original hardware.

Another great lesson from Joe. The pultec from UA is magical and the more I learn how to use it the more I love it and I love it a lot.
I'm so proud to be a audio nerd. This stuff keeps me going!
👍🏻
...keeps UA going too. I'm leaving them, as I hate paying thousands for plugins I can only use on one of my UAD ... and must rebuy for my other units/
You mean be a sound engineer? You say that like you’re so “set apart” from others. No sound engineer calls themself anything, let alone an “audio nerd.” You speak like an amateur
@@vanizell7937 you sound like a very fun person to be around.
@@morbidmanmusic update us, did you sell it before the native version came out or did you decide to hold on?
I need more short, easy to understand videos from masters like this. I learned more in less than 3 minutes here than I have from 30 minute videos. Thank you.
this is quite easily the best summary of how to use the EQP-1A, i always hear mix engineers talk about how awesome it is but how Joe explained it, made me want to instantly apply this to my vocal chain... Thanks A Bunch!!
Thanks so much Joe. Really appreciate your wisdom - and loving this EQ!
Thank you for this easy to understand explanation of this great plugin! UA are the best!🎤❤️
One of the best EQs I have ever used
Simple and amazing. Thank you Joe and UAD
👍🏻
Man I love this EQ for vocals. Magic!!
Greatest plug in. Use it all the time. Fixes and adds, never hurts.
This is amazing will use this forever on mine and others vocals! 😍
I like how Overdrive Music uses the Pultec EQ on vocals!
thank you sir this change my sound so much amazing tips
Underrated UAD Post.
Sounds great 👍 👌
Sir, thank you so much!
Mind blowing tip with the 100 k boost....
great tip! thx!
Thanks. I've tried your settings and its taken the harshness out of vocals which I've tried to get rid of without success until now. Many thanks.
🥂
Great Tutorial 🎯
Awesome 👏🏾 thanks
🥂
Love your videos! Can you guys make a hip hop vocal chain video? God bless 🙏
I knew this was good for vocals good video
I could say I use this as an additive EQ after a subtractive one. It is all a matter of choice tho. Thanks a lot
Yeah after the SSL E CHANNEL
Great video Joe! I was just recording at Sunset Sound in August. I think you’re ATC monitors were in Studio 1 when I was there? Billy Mims was my engineer. Hoping to get back there and do some more recording soon!
Sounds great. Pultec really brings out that analog warmth. Where in the chain would you recommend this? At the beginning or end?
Try both and see what you prefer!
Dude use it as an insert and commit tracks use it in several places.
I love you UA
😍
my second fav eq for vocals after the SSL
Which SSL?
@@gaborkiss1425 the Plugin Alliance 4000 E. I've used it on every mix for the past year.
@@morrisnoblemusic Thanks!
Love it
THANK YOU SIR !!!
🥂
thank you !
👍🏻
Thank you
You're welcome
I love the Pultec EQ, I love using it for mastering songs and using it for vocals I’m thinking about saving money and buying 2 hardware Pultecs for mastering
Same here! The pultec is always on my master bus. And also sometimes on guitars and vocals.
So, to get the Hardware version for the mixbus is a Must :)
Are you guys running analog consoles?
U running analog console?
@@tedcrop nope, using a Apollo x8p :-)
Use access analog instead! Check out their service and thank me later!
Nice
For this genre, chest frequencies of a vocal are really important, if that vocal doesn't have that body its going to get lost, great video!!!! But imma put this here just for any beginner hiphop/ trap /r&b upcoming engineers, 100 hz is what you need to have in control and it must not over power the vocal,in a lot of like travis scott ish sound you will have to cut 100 and around it a LOT to get those thin crispy vocals that fit in trap beats, with these type of genres and mostly pop, 100 is where you're gonna get that GIRTH out of that vocal
PLEASE! IS THIS A FULL SONG... I LOVE THE VOCALS SO MUCH, Please I can't find the song anywhere
Can anyone please help me out here?
I like to push low end as well, really don't get idea of these vocals with everything below 200 Hz completely cutted off
Only makes sense live when the room is already full of mud there...and 100-200 is def the mud spot in most rooms! (This means I am referring to FOH live NOT studio recording btw)
I do get it that these days, with prob more bedroom producers than ever, that live music is prob foreign concept and not the go to reference. I do think it is the best teacher of instincts because you dont have the luxury of tweaking and looking at 0.2 db on a gui...if it sounds good...it IS def good :-)
@@iam-music that's why music should be recorded in treated rooms :D
@@janukomski6728 Of course, sorry I totally meant in a live application; there are NO luxuries for room treatment :-). I do FOH engineer live as well as studio so that comment is specifically about live rooms which are generally quite loaded with mud...so carving your way into balance is the only solution!
I still have the legacy, its great, is the newer version a huge difference?
I’m wondering the same.
Each one is good
Love it. Is that Vance Joy on vocals?
sounds like it
Sounds like it to me!
Do you think this will work well with female vocal too?
Sure!!
When you prefer the legacy version?
it's not
@@morbidmanmusic What do you mean?
I actually prefer the legacy version on the mix buss, it is cleaner and it doesn't have as much artifacts.
@@damienlott That's strange. I mean, I talked to a famous domestic artist, who has a hardware LA-2A in his studio, but many times, he uses the UAD version...and guess what, he said, that he prefers the legacy LA-2A plugin for that (he got the full package as well).
I was like, "how could that be, doesn't legacy UAD always sound worse than premium ones"?
Me too
Cool you show the isolated track, but why not in the context of a full mix?
Nice vid; I think the UAD is an excellent version although I have learnt a hard lesson about dsp cards and plugs...just dont. UAD is an execption where you are boxed in but I would go native in a heartbeat...just wait until you check what happens every generation (I still have UAD1 cards). Just an expensive dongle in reality...the mflops on most graphics cards ie for serial process absolutely trounce dsp cards these days at a much better price/perform ration.
Really like your genuine presentation Joe...nice work.
Pitch correction on the voice is the norm these days I guess but it never sounds right...just wrecks it imvho
When is someone going to do the code for GPUs? I would happily pay for that.
There's a really great native one by OverTone DSP called PTC-2A, it's a straight pultec emu. There's a great comparison video of it, UAD, and others on YT. All of them kind of sucked in the low end except for UAD and the PTC-2A, and I prefer the top end end of the PTC-2A. Very musical and analogue-like. Cheap too, from memory.
@@fattommy4436 Cheers...will check it out. Now to find a swiss knife decent native compressor :-) Would love to have a simple but flexible channel strip with mix and match...lots of 'nearlies' but with showstoppers currently
Love the Pultec Eq. The singer sounds like Vance Joy.
Tutorial Teletronix
Thought that was tyson fury for a min
He’ll knock the low end right out!!
Great, but this vocal needed more a Pultec
how is it better than fabfilter ProQ ?
Because it models a passive EQ with a tube make up gain stage which adds color and life to the sound as opposed to a sterile digital EQ.
Are you serious?
@@mellobotstudio yes - are you patronising me or just checking to see if I am being serious?
Pultec Plug In ? Plug In Pultec ? Ahahahaha Ahahahaha Ahahahaha STOP IT HURTS AHAHAHAHA AHAHAHAHA AHAHAHAHA OOOO OUCH AHAHAHAHA AHAHAHAHA AHAHAHAHAHA AWW MAN AHAHAHAHA AHAHAHAHA .. .
?
Bandwidth is for bottom end not too end.
i dont have an original but the bandwidth on my IGS Tube Rubber Bands (hardware pultec clone) is for treble
Ok I own the actual hardware eqp1 bandwidth is for low end.
@@PetrisTorres Thanks for clarifying! Will keep that in mind.
Uhhhh…. No…. But thanks for playing.
@@m.o.n.d.e.g.r.e.e.n don’t listen to this guy. Not sure what planet he’s on, but the bandwidth is literally for high end on every pultec and pultec clone ever made, including on of course my IGS stereo pultec as well.
Singers? Singer? Nobody can sing anymore, they're terrible these days, because they can't sing no matter what plugins you use on them.
no, clearly you have bad taste. Singers haven't changed, any more than the human voice has changed.
@@morbidmanmusic Then produce the ones on this planet, that can actually sing.
@@morbidmanmusic Singers haven't changed, but attitude towards singing has. There are not many singers left with a soul.
Is this where the cool kids hang out?
