Mixing Perfect Vocals with the Pultec EQP-1A

  • In this video, watch Grammy-winning engineer, Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), break down the advantages of using sweet, musical Pultec curves on vocals. Learn how he treats a vocal stem with the UAD Pultec EQP-1A plug-in, massaging any harshness out of the top end while preserving presence, and boosting the singer's chest tone without introducing mud.
Learn more about the Pultec Passive EQ Collection: www.uaudio.com/uad-plugins/eq...
Building on a decade of the world’s most intensive modeling research, UA has recreated the famed Pultec EQ experience as plug-ins - ones that are nearly indistinguishable from the original analog hardware.
The Pultec Passive EQ Plug-In Collection for UAD-2 and Apollo hardware includes the ultimate plug-in emulations of Pulse Techniques’ original passive EQs. With painstakingly modeled amplifier sections now onboard, the Pultec EQ Collection "breathes" like the original hardware.

For this genre, chest frequencies of a vocal are really important, if that vocal doesn't have that body its going to get lost, great video!!!! But imma put this here just for any beginner hiphop/ trap /r&b upcoming engineers, 100 hz is what you need to have in control and it must not over power the vocal,in a lot of like travis scott ish sound you will have to cut 100 and around it a LOT to get those thin crispy vocals that fit in trap beats, with these type of genres and mostly pop, 100 is where you're gonna get that GIRTH out of that vocal

Only makes sense live when the room is already full of mud there...and 100-200 is def the mud spot in most rooms! (This means I am referring to FOH live NOT studio recording btw)
I do get it that these days, with prob more bedroom producers than ever, that live music is prob foreign concept and not the go to reference. I do think it is the best teacher of instincts because you dont have the luxury of tweaking and looking at 0.2 db on a gui...if it sounds good...it IS def good :-)

  • @iam-music

Nice vid; I think the UAD is an excellent version although I have learnt a hard lesson about dsp cards and plugs...just dont. UAD is an execption where you are boxed in but I would go native in a heartbeat...just wait until you check what happens every generation (I still have UAD1 cards). Just an expensive dongle in reality...the mflops on most graphics cards ie for serial process absolutely trounce dsp cards these days at a much better price/perform ration.
Really like your genuine presentation Joe...nice work.
Pitch correction on the voice is the norm these days I guess but it never sounds right...just wrecks it imvho
When is someone going to do the code for GPUs? I would happily pay for that.

There's a really great native one by OverTone DSP called PTC-2A, it's a straight pultec emu. There's a great comparison video of it, UAD, and others on YT. All of them kind of sucked in the low end except for UAD and the PTC-2A, and I prefer the top end end of the PTC-2A. Very musical and analogue-like. Cheap too, from memory.
