I make hot cocoa mix every year & give it for gifts to a lot of people. I usually make 2-3 double batches. I make it all up first & then I put the mixture in the jars. It seems like this is a more efficient way to make it rather than one mix at a time. I've never added toppers before, but I think I might put a variety of toppers in baggies, then put all of the baggies in a decorative basket & let everyone select their choice of toppers to go with their jars of cocoa mix. We have a big Christmas party for my side of the family & this is when I give it to everyone. Everyone really likes it & my grandchildren really enjoy it after they have been out sledding. One of my great nephews really enjoys making some & sharing it with his best friend! It really warms my heart that they like it so much. Last year, I bought two 1-gallon sized jars from Amazon & filled them up with the mix for my grandkids. They really liked that! It should have lasted for the season!! Lol!

I'm thinking that I might use 4 regular Mason jars and completely fill 3 with cocoa mix and one with marshmallows. I am getting into small woodworking projects, so I will make a small wood caddy with a handle to hold the 4 jars. Then after the cocoa is gone, they will have the caddy for utensils when they have parties, or for pens and such on the desk, or to hold things in the bathroom, or whatever.

I'm an empty nester, so I don't have any children to send the Coco mixes to school with for their teachers ....darn it I wish I had it back then! but I have a lot of grandkids, and maybe I can help them out. I am experimenting with hot cocoa mixes with my granddaughters. We are looking for a good mix and decided to try your Peppermint one. Since we are working on the basic part, we limited the peppermint and used 1/2 cane sugar and 1/2 powdered sugar. If this works like I think it will, this will be our go to for pantry storage of hot cocoa. I can just see it now - the girls in an assembly line, making jars of hot cocoa mix to store in our family pantries. Now when I say jars, it takes 5 times the amount of your recipe to make one storage jar. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing this. One of the girls is already wanting the toffee recipe.

the only difference between our recipes is the salt ;) my grannys recipe! also after making thehot cocoa she added a drop or 3 of Vanilla ! we used canning jars with decoration or painting on outside and candy stirring stick inside .

I like this idea and these recipes except for the coffee one for kids, for adults I love the soup mason jar recipes and ingredients. Loved the commenter who talked about putting the baggies around the marshmallows! Great suggestion! I know you said you're going to decorate them later and I haven't watched the video to the end yet but perhaps a small square of quilting Christmas themed fabric under the lid the way they do jam jars.
I love these kinda idea's!! my daughterinlaw does the brownies in jars ( 1/2) the size jars.. then when you get ready, you can pop into oven and they're delish... We actually just did a BIRTHDAY party for a family member that enjoys brownies more than cake..... Made ahead and cooked them all at once and sent him with a few extras that weren't baked yet.. we put vanilla bean ice cream on top and it was a big hit!

great video, Tina! My husband grew up on the hot chocolate base. A tip. use 1/2 as much powdered sugar as you do granulated sugar. You'll get a creamier consistency as it dissolves better. Awesome idea, these look so good! I make something similar to these and I find that if I use a whisk to stir the mixture, it blends really easily and gets out any lumps which I always seem to have in my cocoa...lol Lots of luv from New Brunswick! Jenn

It's my understanding that powdered sugar contains cornstarch to keep it from clumping, which could explain the creamy texture. I'm going to try it.
