Duuuude, I totally forgot how good the story was ! I haven't played this game since its release way back when. I also forgot about how long the ending dragged on. I know there are ways to cheese the magick system in this game but there is no need to as the difficulty level was perfect. I know this game was far from perfect but it was def one of the best on the GameCube and was so unique and still is. Nintendo had some kind of copyright on the insanity meter which is why there wasn't any other game like it. It actually just expired in 2021. Another great video that brought me right back to the past.
@@not_jon_vendi this was my first playthrough on probably 15 years or so, and even for me it's crazy how well this one maintained its atmosphere. It's hard to convey in video format, but it does everything just right, with the ambient sound changing as your character dips lower and lower on the sanity scale. Its definetly a cheeseable game, but like you said no reason for it. The difficulty is pretty well perfect just playing as intended.
@@YaquiShaman I loved it was exclusive to the GameCube at the time, but wish it would have been ported elsewhere, it could have had a much bigger following.

@@cRPGeek Its everything I like... Retro dungeon crawling and a horrific struggle against an ancient evil. It's got that interesting look too where I can't quite decide if the animations are utilizing some sort of FMV.
This game is a masterpiece until the player figures out that they can cheese the whole game by running in circles to restore their Magick. After that the combat isn't challenging and many segments drag on for a long time. Far from a a perfect game IMO, although I can see why people adore it. There's nothing quite like Eternal Darkness and it's certainly memorable. Excellent story, definitely the strongest part of the game is the unfolding narative.
@@segaofmyhouse for sure agree the story is the best part. I like the combat but it never feels too hard. I think I died once or twice in my playthrough.
@@aquawalrus I respect your opinion on Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem Also I think Nintendo should’ve gone down the Tom Hanks Syndrome path after the release of not just Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem but also both Metroid Prime and Geist (2005 video game) in my opinion. Just Saying?
First one here! Stopped by for the algorithm, will be back later after I watch it. This was one of my favorite GameCube games back in the day so I'm excited for this one!
Something I like about cosmic horror is just how deeply troubling losing one's mind is. The idea that just seeing some ancient beings can cause you to completely devolve into a gibbering mess of broken man is so hard to get across in digital media like games.
Its such a shame, there was a second game planned but it sadly never got too far into development. Probably destined to be one of a kind, maybe a spiritual successor will release some day.
The only modern game that comes close to being as effective at Lovecraftian horror as Eternal Darkness is 2019's Song of Horror. It is actually really good and legitimately scary.
@@orcwarchiefreviews I had it when it released, sold it, then years later my brother re bought it for me. Now it will remain with me the rest of my life haha.
You know I always will hate covid I ended up having to sell my GameCube and I had all the resident evils all the Zelda's skies of Arcadia and zatch Bell and I don't think I'll ever be able to get all those back unless I find other means ;-)
@@orcwarchiefreviews that's a bummer! I curse my teenage self, I sold pretty much all my PC games back then I had so many classics. The worst part is the retro collecting scene is so nuts these days. I was considering trying to find myself a copy of Cybermage but looking it up it's hard to find a complete box for less than 150$. Tragic.
The GameCube flopping unfortunately was almost unavoidable - just like the Dreamcast. The N64 ticked off a lot of 3rd party devs because it was difficult to port to cartridges. The marketing also made the GC seem weak even though specwise it could outperform the Ps2. People legitimately thought it was just for kids even though it brought us RE Remake and RE4. Graphically a lot of GC games hold up. The Xbox was the power horse of that generation but unfortunately it basically gave us the modern era of consoles just being PCs. I miss being able to see a game and knowing what consoles it was made for.
Totally spot on. I loved my GameCube, and always found it to have far superior graphics to the PS2, but anyone I told that looked at me like I was insane. I have such mixed feelings on the way consoles went, like on one hand I'm super nostalgic for a time when there were games clearly made for a specific platform, but on a more practical hand I get so annoyed when something is locked to a console I don't own. I still keep hoping they will release the Demon Souls remake for PC one day. I can't justify buying a PS5 for one title.
@aquawalrus Yeah looking back you can definitely tell the Ps2 offered a great library and DVD functionality but it wasn't stronger than the Xbox and GC. In fact the Dreamcast even has better video output. Ps2 games tend to be interlaced with a lot of jagged lines. I'm not knocking the Ps2. I love that system but the marketing did a TON of work lol. It just shows RAM & GPU isn't everything.
Been going through all your vids, what a solid channel, looking forward to more - a Wizardry (especially 8) or Might and Magic video would be great
