The WORST Managerial Decision in Reds History

  • A team that has faced years and years worth of disappointment suddenly has the opportunity to advance far in the playoffs, and perhaps win the World Series. The only thing between Cincinnati and a playoff series victory was what their manager, Dusty Baker, decided to do.
At 6:50, the stats displayed on screen are slightly off from what I said verbally. The stats on screen are correct, and what I said verbally is incorrect.

I definitely disagree with some points here. 70 pitches isn't really a high pitch count. And frankly, I blame Latos for the meat ball he threw to Posey, as he let the previous call not going his way get in his head. The analysis was interesting though, I didn't really know our bullpen was that good that year. To be sure, in the playoffs, you do whatever it takes to get the win. Additionally, the strike out/caught stealing double play featuring Hanigan and Bruce was a horrible call as well. Bruce never had a chance to straight steal third, and Hanigan should not have looked at strike three. That was another horrible managerial call. I guess if Hanigan drives it, Baker looks like a genius. Even if he grounded out, but the moving runners prevented a double play, he looks decent. Unfortunately the worst thing happened. The game and series was full of missed chances and gaffes, including a Hanigan passed ball that looked like he just *missed* it. Disappointing series, especially with how poorly the team is doing ten years later. The postseason is a distant dream for us right now.

Ugh, this kills me. the pitching rotation starting every game except one, and Votto batting .341!! The 2012 Reds were by far their best team since 1990... might have been better than the 1990 team, too. It's been downhill ever since. As a diehard fan, this hurts me.

even as a casual reds fan it pains me to see them dead in the water. my uncle lives in cincy & when i was younger we used to go down there every summer to visit. i wanna say this went on from 2007 to maybe 2014 or 2015, so i caught some great action at GABP during that stretch in which they made the playoffs 3 out of 4 years from 2010-2013. definitely made some great memories watching those teams, i’d love to see them operate competently again.

Don't forget. Dusty was the manager that bitterly complained about a player that walked too much, and "clogged up the bases." Completely true. Dusty Baker, the PLAYER, didn't walk much. Why the HELL would you hire a guy that doesn't value a high on-base percentage. That's our Dusty!!

Living in and around Cincinnati my entire life, I have always been, and always will be, a Reds fan. Even when it's really hard to be one.
Dusty had a mentality of "There are no BIG games," because he didn't want to put pressure on the players and make them panic and make mistakes...
And that's why every team he manages can't win BIG games. He wants to show faith in players, which can be great, but there's this thing called "situational awareness" that he seems to lack, and it ruined a phenomenal Reds 2012 season.

@Sherman Pearson You can have him back. I love the man; he was a great player and probably an even better person. The Astros rarely play a game with their true starters playing together, because he is always giving guys a day off. He once gave a guy the day off when he was on a 8-10 game hitting streak! He needs to watch Bull Durham, you never f**k with a streak, lol. He doesn't know when to pull a pitcher (mainly relievers when it is clear they don't have their stuff that night). That blame also falls on the pitching coach, but in the end the head always has the final word. Plays guys hitting .200 instead of legitimate players who you just traded for! I wouldn't say Dusty is a bad coach, he just isn't a WS Championship caliber coach.

Latos had allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in the previous 2/3 of an inning, prior to the grand slam. It's a do-or-die game, and you've got one of the best bullpens in recent history. Not to mention that a .336/.408/.549 hitter is coming to the plate, with the bases loaded. I know we have hindsight, but Latos was reeling at this point. It's not crazy to suggest he should've come out.

I was very disappointed when they brought Baker back after getting blanked the in the 2010 playoffs. I'm not going to say he wasn't a good manager (I don't think he is but I don't have a team) but he wasn't a good fit for Cincinnati. Kind of like how Tony Dungy couldn't win the Super Bowl with Tampa. Gruden could but then Tony ended up in Indy and won it all. Not a bad coach, just couldn't get them over the hump and I think Cincy should have sent Baker packing and brought in someone else while they still had a playoff team. They've been rebuilding without a clue ever since.

Do you even watch baseball, and did you watch the video? They had an elite bullpen - part of being a manager is bullpen management. I.e. when your starter is getting shelled, you put in a top guy like Aroldis Chapman with a 1.5 ERA to get out of the inning.
