  • This property has been renovated and the new owners now live there as of October 2023.
The Aretha Franklin mansion is a 3-story house that was built in 1927 and is approximately 6000-square-feet. It backs right up to the seventh hole on the city’s prestigious and private Detroit Golf Club. The mansion features immaculate hand-carved woodwork and details throughout. It also had three beautiful stone and marble fireplaces. The first floor has a library, family room, two-story living room, kitchen and breakfast area and a solarium with stone-arched walls overlooking the terrace and golf course. The house was listed in 2022 for $1.2 million but was just recently lowered to just under a $1 million.
With this mansion having that history and still having some of Aretha’s furniture and decor, on top of Detroit's comeback story, surely this historic mansion will sell soon. Thankfully I was able to document it all before that happened. *Update: The Aretha Franklin Mansion was sold in the summer of 2023 and renovations have begun. Most of the decor and furnishings that were left, are all gone forever. That’s going to come to the conclusion of Aretha Franklin’s abandoned mansion. There’s no other way to say it other than you’re not going to want to miss this video. check it out at Abandoned Central….. link is in the bio! Franklin, Sisters Carolyn & Erma as well as Cecil her brother, was a haven for so many folks in music no matter what their genre. Mahalia Jackson was her Godmother, and in Gospel Clara Ward visited, R & B was Jackie Wilson & Sam Cooke, and she met Smokey Robinson when he was Six to her Four. He said in an American Masters Documentary, that she was an amazing Piano Player as a little girl. He didn't look all that well but he was on Drugs most notably Cocaine.

@@richardboggspcI believe u. I'd believe u regardless but I especially believe u bc u mention "client" so I can relate. Yrs ago when I was studying for my ER\Trauma 1 certs I was RN super at a very upscale private assisted living
ursing home in the Philadelphia area. The grandmother of a 76ers player was one of my patients in the nursing home unit. (And no I'm not going to say who it was n violate privacy..but this will prob prompt ppl to say it's fake...its whatever..idgaf..think what u want) Anyways he would come in all the time to visit her n was so nice n polite to the staff. He would bring us huge food trays n stuff on holidays. One 4th of July he had famous Dave's bbq cater lunch for every shift n at Xmas time it was always the best hoagie n cheese steak trays etc. To us he was just a normal grandson visiting his gma after the initial novelty wore off. Celebrities do normal things too like bake pies for neighbors n visit relatives in nursing homes. I also took care of some other patients that were well known in the Philly area, not necessarily celebs or world famous but for example a couple that owned a very famous restaurant in the area for decades, the mother of an opera singer that is famous in Japan but has her doctorate n was\still is a well known music professor at a top university in Philly, things like that. Some ppl are just cynical n hateful..this is the 3rd video in a row where someone told a story n the comment section argued whether the story was fake or not. It's crazy.

Ohh my goodness. Can't believe I'm actually seeing this. I actually walked the floors in this house many years ago before Aretha passed away. My sister was good friends with one of Aretha's best friends back then. I remember this house very well. It was very beautiful inside and out. Played tennis there I think it was 1995 or 1996. Just not sure. Had the pleasure of meeting Aretha three times. She was a very down to earth person. Alway's had a good sense of humor when I was around her. Lots of memories of this old house. I don’t know if it’s true, but I was told that Aretha lived in a neighborhood after this home that was in the Long Lake and Telegraph area. I think it was my step mother who pointed in the direction across the pond, they lived in the Andover neighborhood. The homes were modern but had the same vibe. Loaded with stonework, with main living area going straight up to the second floor. They had many fireplaces also. Watching this I started thinking she may have been wanting the feel without all of the repairs that an antique home would require. I could be wrong here, but that’s what people were talking about. Anyway what an exciting old home tour. What a great woman, and amazing artist!

Sometimes when you have too much & didn't learn to appreciate & value things/heritage this is what happens....should have just put it in the hands of some relative/friend who would hv appreciated. I recently inherited a colonial home from my grandfather, who inherited it from his uncle who was an estate manager appointed by the crown. He called me one day & said "its yours, please don't sell it because thats what my children want to do." By God's grace i honoured that request, spent 800,000 in restoration & its now my home.

I lived in this neighborhood from 1985-1990. It is a beautiful neighborhood. The homes were originally built for auto executives and the association in the 1920s made exclusive. The boilers that heated these houses were originally coal and most converted to gas. They were very efficient.

@quniesmall9720 Yes, the Detroit golf club is right off of McNichols (Also known as 6 mile the further east you travel), though I don't know which part of the golf club she would've resided in. I'm a Detroit native and have performed at many of the mansions in the city as well as in the golf club. I also have family that once lived in the Indian village (though I don't live there myself). There's a tour you can take for other famous houses.
My late father performed with her twice and a bassist I play with now was in her band. I didn't meet her, on account of me being so young when they were off touring and performing, but I'm glad that we have that piece of history verified. I did go to see Rosa Parks' body, and there are similar situations when it comes to her and her Detroit legacy. Hope this helps. If not, I can contact the bassist I play with. He even wrote a book about his time playing with Aretha.

And I knew the words to her music backward and forward. She told him to bring me to meet her. Looking at this house now, I can envision my presence in some of those rooms. Not a radio.
That is an in home intercom that reached almost every room. It was from the late 1940's a servant staff used it to contact the home owners for meals, guest or deliveries.
Very common in rich homes and well to do homes.
The stone you refer to is limestone on several of those fireplaces. With lady finger bricks for the inside of it.
The little faces are actually forms of gargoyles, but because they are faces, they are referred to as cherubs. They are meant to ward of evil spirits and harm that can be brought into a home because of numerous guests.
All of the wood that is done throughout this home is Walnut.

These old mansions in Michigan always amaze me! So many differences yet extremely similar. My family and I had a mansion in a small Flint neighborhood near the MSD and it reminds me so much of Aretha’s place. Ours was built maybe a decade or so prior to hers. The very first owner was the first Buick purchasing agent, the next few was a lawyer and doctor, a lady who was an architect and then us which we’re a basketball family. The architect lady was the one who tore down the second story of our house in the 50s and today, there’s an article of the house that remains with each owner that purchases the house. My father decided to leave it there along with original pictures from the 1920s, 40s-50s, and the railing from the staircase that was torn down plus an old tube television that was originally in the sunroom. So much history in these houses and absolutely great spirits if any form of human life remain in these homes after the owners move out! Hopefully, Aretha’s house can become a fantastic living situation for a future family in the near future. Our house today - from what I understand - houses some out of town students and doctors.

My friends mom was her interior designer for this house. She was such a nice woman and I couldn’t believe she was eye to eye with me, when she gave me a hug after walking in the door, a whole 5’2” like me:) I used to work there back in 1996/97/98 I believe it was, I had just graduated high school and while in college I started there in the fall. She actually sat with me once while I ate my lunch. We were watching channel 7 news together in the kitchen. She had a wall in there with a tv built in. Much smaller than your video shows today, I had to watch that part several times bc it looks so different. The kitchen cabinets were all blue, exactly like the fridge, but very modern looking and no hardware on the cabinets. The pictures you showed of the home aren’t her things (at least not when I knew the home), except the red curtains and rose carpet in the main room and the master bedroom/bed with pink bedding and curtains were hers, yes. Her style was VERY colorful and mismatched but, it was her unique style none the less. The pictures of the kitchen, main living room and sunroom look like the pictures when she first bought the home. You can tell they are a different shade photo quality vs her bedroom and main living room that’s empty after it was sold to an investor…Just to help with the context of this awesome video. She had a red piano in the main room with flowers laying dramatically on it, white furniture and the large tall wall to the right of that main room above the couch and below those walled windows that pop out off the black tile bathroom, had several of her pictures of singing, highlight photos like receiving awards Grammys, famous people she had photos with, just incredible to see in person. The archway room, back sitting area sunroom had a purple suede couch with a jukebox. The basement was a recording studio with special flooring and mirrors all over. That tile bathroom upstairs had just been put in. The door handles upstairs are ivory and 24k gold. The bathroom with the black tile floor was all being put in when I worked there. It had a footed bathtub in the center of the room, true red. It also had a toilet room with a bidet. Haha I remember turning it on to see what would happen and I got my face a little wet lol I had never seen one before at the time. Walk further down the hall was her master bedroom to the right and connected was a $10k shower with a radio and speakers built in, cd player (I would turn it on and listen to it while I worked upstairs on that side of the house) and sink/toilet had floral accents. This home was her ‘party’ home. She entertained here. There was a project I got to do in one of the rooms, the opposite side up the upstairs (the west wing I guess it would be called) orange carpet, went through all her photos from when she was a young girl and even photos of her four sons. I organized those pictures that were in boxes, albums etc. the other connecting room I think a jack and Jill with blue carpet in that one. But there wasn’t any furniture in those rooms for a while if at all. She didn’t live there full time, I’m not even sure part time since it was more an entertainment gig. Her main home was in Southfield I believe. Ha I just got to the part your in her shower. Yep, and on the other side of that master bedroom and crazy shower was a huge walk in closet/another bedroom. The garages were never really opened except they were unlocked, at least one was. That dark short hallway off the kitchen with the solid door you didn’t open, led to the garage which was practically empty. It looks as tho that kitchen was added on to or walls knocked down because I remember it being much smaller. Those windows in the kitchen looking out to the driveway, that is where I was when I met her. Under those windows was a sitting area and a table. There was a side door to the right, like a storm door. She had a black Lincoln, it pulled up and she literally got out of the backseat and walked up to that storm door and I stood in honor of course and she was smiling and said our greetings for the first time and she hugged me. Talk about an amazing first impression from the Queen of Soul. Oh, the room you originally thought was a library in beginning was a sitting room I think. I don’t remember ever being in the small room off the front door. I have so many memories in this house. I was alone there a lot, cleaning things, removing small debris from construction, dusting, washing those new and older floors and of course soaking in the Legend. My Aunt and Uncle sent me this video tonight and I’m enjoying watching this. Flooding memories of my time here. It’s pretty amazing to see it all these years later.

How's about washing your hands too. I see it's empty, but, when you grabbed that piece of paper I was wondering how much of a spot you left on the white walls. Why are you even in someone else's house like this? Doing a youtube video a defense to blatant trespassing now? Good grief man. Had to turn it off after the 'library room'. Leave peoples' stuff alone.

i have to say you did a great job with this explore. Im so happy to have found your channel. Your pace was perfect, not too fast that the viewer is always trying to play catch up and missing a lot details, but not so slow that you get bored and wish for a fast forward feature. Most of all your narration was perfect. Your comments were on point without a lot of unnecessary commentary that just sounds like you like to hear yourself talk, a problem that a lot of urban explorers fall victim too. Look forward to seeing more from you buddy. Keep em coming
