Even if you aren't a big rice consumer you can always use this stash to help out someone else or use for barter.
Thank you, I agree about the bartering potential.
That's why I like to make a bunch of little bags with the exact amount on it.
You want a 1 quarr bag of rice from me?
Well, give me some deoderant. Lol
You are suppose to seal ABOVE the RIP NOTCH, thus the rip notch allows you to unseal the package, and then you can reseal with the zipper for short term storage.
Thank you -- this is the clarity I needed and it makes perfect sense. I get that after opening, the zipper works for short term. Thanks for the clarification!
Yes! ha ha ha... that is so funny. No clue why she's doing it this way.
That's what I thought. I seal mine on the top, as I've seen all other videos show the same. Now she can't use the zipper seal, so it may as well not have been on there.
Leisa seal the Mylar bags above the zipper, that way you can reclose them while in use.
I was just coming to the comments to ask about this lol
@@melissajohnson4289 that’s what I do, seems to work ok
Agreed!!
I stupidly heat sealed the zipper bag first time below the zip and then was like duuuh..ok if you do it right you only get to use the zip once anyway. After that you clean your mylar bag and refill..snip the zip off anyway. Reuse the mylar it gets smaller each time. Don't waste bags they're pricey and can be reused.
Use your canning funnel to fill. For the smaller bags. Zip partially before adding the O2 pkt. Lessens the struggle
for my family of 4, 50lbs of rice is usually gone in 3-4 months. These teenagers eat a lot and is culturally an important food staple. Rice is life!
Stand + funnel = no spill
I was about to comment about sealing above zipper lock. Then I saw other comments that aid that already.
A trick is to seal the bag 3/4 of the way, then add the oxygen absorbers and once the oxygen absorbers are in you only need to seal 1/4 per bag.
I’m glad you found the Mylar bags.
Thank you-I always wanted to know how this was done!
Great video. I’m spending my 4th of July weekend packaging some food in Mylar and love having some video encouragement. 😄
Thank you for that PDF! Very thoughtful of you❤️
Thank you Leisa , your amazing and have some wonderful tips 😘
Thank you
Love your quilted counter mat. I would love to have one.
I just purchased your Pantry Organization on Etsy! So excited to use it!
This was easy, thank u, for all the info.
I need to go and grab some stuff, then, I can get started. Thanks again. 🙏❤️👏🌟👍🌹
I love love love mylar bags for long term food storage. With the ziplock though I would definitely seal it above the zipper like everyone else said. 💕
Besides being funny, I love your oxy absorber chart! Thank you!!! So helpful!!!
I sealed mine above the zipper so I can close it once I'm using out a bag. I love the quart size also, perfect size for herbed instant potatoes.
Qts make sense for a lot of folks I think
@@SuttonsDaze I got some bags recently that came with oxygen absorbers that must have been deactivated. You mentioned one can use regular vacuum sealed bags. I have a Foodsaver. I was thinking of storing small batches of rice with the foodsaver and then placing in the mylar bags. How long do you think it would last that way?
This is so helpful. I've never done this before. I'm going to watch it again and then buy what I need. Thank you!
Thank you for showing the entire process...I didn't do the heat seal so I have to go back and do that... thanks again and GOD 🙏 bless you too...
I HAVE ONE OF THOSE THINGS AND I LOVE IT FOR POURING LIQUIDS INTO BAGS FOR FREEZER
Thank you so much for this! We have about 300 lbs of rice that we use mostly for our 4 dogs and this is by far the best way to do ours! Especially thanks for the pdf this is going to be pinned up on my pantry wall :))) Many Blessings!
Yes, just load the bags in the rice bag, so much easier. I love the fact that the bags come with labels. Very cool. Have a great day, Leisa. 🌸
PS. You can find the bag holders on Amazon.
Thank you for sharing this Leisa! I appreciate these videos so much. They have helped get my husband more on board with working on preps!
Awesome!
For freezer and other locking bags to hold food (or (non-food) small parts) I jerry-rigged a thing to hold them open from the lid(s) of a 1qt. plastic container that either yogurt or pickles came in. I cut out the center to within two or three eighths of an inch / i cm. of the rim. It fits inside a quart freezer bag handily, and holds itself in place when it's just under the locking seal strip at all points. Then I can use a jar-filler or just pour from a wide spoon or spatula, or from a jar or can or my hand into the bag with no spills. For my serenity's sake (especially with small parts) I also do this over a tray or box to catch any pieces or traces that manage to escape.
Thank you Leisa! My husband and I have learned lots from you!
You're most welcome
I have too
Thank you Leisa!!
You are so welcome!
Tks for the free download, I always get so confused on how many & for what!🤔
I like to use a canning funnel to help fill the bags. I also like to get the bags that have the stand-up bottoms (I don't have that fancy bag holder :) ). Looks like your bags might be able to stand up if you flared out the bottoms.
Mylar is better for long term storage because plastic bags have tiny holes that will let in air over time, but the mylar is basically a piece of metal sandwiched between plastic and will hold the air-tight seal for many many years.
I did the exact same thing. Bought that same rice for the dogs and myself
I put my mylar bags in another plastic tub while I fill to prevent them falling over and spilling contents. I use the Tractor Supply bucket lids since no point using a one time lid you can't open w/o special tool and food already in mylar. That way can open and close if need to check on food or pull out just one quart bag, put lid back on.
I enjoyed this video so much! Thank you, I have needed this info & your printable list was such a blessing that I decided to be a subscriber. Do you have a free info list about moisture absorbers what size packets to use & what foods to use them with?
Thank you for all the good tips and information. I also love rice and eat lots of it with my pinto beans or with other meats or my ugly chicken but I did make the break away from white rice many many years ago to brown rice. You are getting twice the nutrients and fiber by eating brown rice. Once you get used to the texture it is really great. It is just that in a shtf situation the more nutrition that you have stored the better. I still like white rice.
Hi Leisa thanks for that link for the Mylar bags. I do store rice but never bought the bags, and you always talk about these bags too. Is the vacuum sealer a must? You mentioned other options also.👍👍👍❤️❤️
amazing. thx for sharing.
I saw a video of a guy who opened his stored rice which he stored in mylar bags and the silver on the mylar literally had disappeared and the bags turned CLEAR! He had to throw all that rice away because it was ruined. Have you ever seen this happen? I am so worried about my rice now!
I'm married to an Indian, we go through at least 50 lbs of rice a month and that's only for lunch.
Love those quart size bags! I'm bagging up 75 lbs of flour today! The work never ends! Keep praying and keep prepping everyone!
So glad you mentioned storing rice for the dogs. We prefer wild rice & that is what I had in our storage, but now will include white rice for our fur babies. Thanks for the video & links, will be ordering bags & absorbers this week.
Don't use oxygen absorbers with wild (brown rice). Botulism thrives in no oxygen and the oils in brown rice will hasten that.
I always enjoy watching you. You are so relatable. I don't eat much rice at all, either. I just wanted to say that if I was storing rice for the animals, it would be the cheapest rice on the market, not the jasmine rice. I love my cat so much, but he isn't eating the jasmine or calrose rice if shtf unless I just can't finish what I cooked. (Admittedly, that would end up being all the time... lol!)
BTW, I set my bag or jars that I'm filling in a bowl to catch what I spill, which can sometimes be more than I get in the jar. Even if I am using a funnel, I may overflow the container. I have to be the clumsiest in the kitchen.
Lastly, I wanted to share that I like to also label the contents and date along the top edge of the mylar bag. That way, when they are standing up in a storage container, I can file them like file folders. I can easily pick the bag with the right contents, and with the shortest best buy date to ensure I'm properly rotating my treasures.
A great UA-cam, thank you!
Ty for posting u what else do u bag for your dogs? I have dogs and I want to make sure I have a good supply of food for them.
This helps! A day late because I should have put 2 oxygen ABSORBER in my bags. I'm not going to redo them. I'm just going to use those items before the use by date that was out in 2023 first! My next batch I will do better!! Yesterday was my first time. Learning a new skill.
Thank you...
I know before I got a vaccum sealer I removed most the O2 manually. Then added 2 300cc O2 absorbers for safety seemed to work.
THANK YOU MY DEAR
My general principle on container size is that I can always open more containers, but I can't necessarily trust a larger container to not hold more than I end up wanting. =)
this was very helpful
You can extend the bottom of the bag to make it easier and probably give you more room.
Great video. I found the best price for gamma seal2 at tracter supply. It may be different from place to place so be sure to check prices. For me Amazon was most expensive. I live in Northern MI.
Oh, your procedures were actually really good. And personally, I would’ve squeezed more of the air out of it before I zipped it shut. But you should’ve sealed it twice and not in the same place above the zipper line so when you open it later and you don’t need to use the entire bag you can zip it shut again for a week or two is sitting on the shelf. You don’t seal it below the zipper line. But other than that everything was great. Just thought I’d pass that little tidbit of information along. That’s the reason that has the little notches on the mylar bag on both sides where to tear it open. That no longer does any good if you seal it below the zipper line you’re supposed to seal it above the little notches in the mylar bag. God be with you you have a great day.
Jasmine rice for the dogs!!!! WOW you are a GOOD doggie Mama!!!
You know it!
Thanks for the link, Leisa. I've looked at so many on Amazon and didn't know which were actually good quality. You made it easy!
I try...lol
YES! I've been waiting for the video for the same reason! So my mixed reviews. Now I'll be more confident for the bags and O2 absorbers. Thank you so much Leisa!
I can’t find the link
Thank you so much for sharing this video . I am new to prepping. It has been exhausting trying to figure out the different cc's and how to actually store with a zipper lock, where the heat seal etc.
I am so confused. When the oxygen absorbers are open. Where /how would you store the unused oxygen absorbers so they don't go to waste?
Regarding the storage bins. Could I just store the bags in a dark Rubbermaid latch container? Or does it have to be food grade?
Any answers would be greatly appreciated as I am overwhelmed.
Thank You! But was wondering why you seal under the ziplock thing? Or maybe no room to seal above the zip lock I think?
I see a bunch of people have already told you you're supposed to seal above the zipper if you want to be able to close it again after opening. I made the same mistake the first time around...
Good info, Leisa
Leisa the mylar bag in the list you have below doesn't say ziplock seals on it. Not hard to confuse me for sure are they just omitting saying the zipper seal too? Love how you sealed them but believe me I am
messier with rice than you are even trying not to be. You dropped very little and i like that you can press it closed prior to sealing the bag. Ty for the pdf!
Is it necessary to use the bucket if you have a dark cool pantry in a basement / or a an extra refrigerator? Thanks!
A Flat Iron Hair thing (I picked up at Goodwill) works great to seal the bags
I think its the best
You are awesome!!! 😊 You make it looks so easy. I just got my first box of myla bags and oxigen absorbers. I was having some fears and doubts on how to use it. I’m thinking now I might be ready to start saving my food with those bags. And I needed the information about how many oxigen absorbers I should used. Thank you so, so, so much 🌸
Years ago when I first started and didn't realize oxygen absorbers were going to sweat...that is what happens if you don't get the bag sealed quickly.
Our tractor supply sells gamma lids too
I seal mine across the top above the zipper. That way when I tear it off I can use the zipper to re-close the bag incase I don't use it all at once.
Thank you!!
You're welcome
Leisa if i use my food saver to vacuum seal beans would you still use oxygen absorbers?
my mylar bags state temp of 350 degrees f to seal or wool setting on an iron .
I wondered about my vac seal bags inside a bucket. I did not think light could get in there.
Thanks.
I just found a comment below that addressed your question. 😊
I forgot the person's name already...🙄
It has something to do with one layer of the mylar bag being metal.
If you want extra light protection yes buy a box of 6 mil black garbage bags and line the inside of your bucket then put all the mylar values inside the plastic bag and seal it then put your gamma bid on the bucket
I have a question regarding the Mylar bags. Once I had one mouse that entered the house and she went into my pantry... oh boy did she make a mess... but I had food in bags and some wrapped in some kind of aluminium bag... she just chew through thick plastic containers, plastic bags and this aluminium one... so my question is... would they be able to chew through a Mylar bag also? Sorry for the question but I never saw (for real) or touched a Mylar bag. Thank you for all those very nicely done and informative videos. 🌹
Can we vacuum seal Mylar bags? If yes, do we still need the O2 absorbers?
We don't consume a lot of rice either, but, like you, I am putting it my long term storage pantry. Thank you for the video. I wasn't sure if you were supposed to use oxygen absorbers or moisture absorbers. I know you aren't supposed to use both.
Can we just use the regular bits on the buckets or does it have to be the gamma lids
Can you Seal with a hot Is hair ironi?
My question 🙋♀️ s this… after watching your video about putting away flour, can’t I use the brown paper bag inside the vacuum seal bag and then in the bucket and get the same effect?
hey Leisa! just an fyi ,after much trial and error ...LOL! Ive found using a canning funnel works really well , esp for the qt sized bags
Thanks Karla, keep watching.....lol
Leisa, what size oxygen absorbers ? This drives me crazy .. so many different sizes.. Thank You
Do the bags always compress down? I used 200 cc oxygen absorber in quart bags of bread flour and they didn't compress down.
Hello! So glad to be here!😊 Great Video!!! How quickly do you need to seal the bags after adding the oxygen absorbers before they go bad? That’s the step that stresses me…… TIA😊
Quickly! No dawdling
Line bucket with black trash bags if you pack in vacume sealer bags.
Home Depot buckets are stamped food grade
Gamma lids from Lowe's are great. They were just under $8 each for me. If you're going to start using buckets and gamma lids, I strongly suggest you have a rubber mallet to get the ring to seat onto the bucket. Most of us won't be able to physically push it on. A regular hammer risks cracking the lid ring. I remove the screw top from the ring when I pound the ring into place. It still takes a few wacks, going round and round.
Rubber maet is a must!
Is there any place to get a replacement 0 ring for the twist on part of the gamma lid? I have a couple that broke apart.
I tried to use regular vac seal bags and found out that sharp edges of rice and pasta puncture the bags making them useless. I waited a couple of days then checked all the bags and found 3 out of ten were already punctured
I find it easier to seal the zip lock if it’s 1/2 way zipped, leaving just enough room to easily insert the oxygen absorber.
Oooo nice idea. Thanks!
The 1 quart size is 18 x 25 in metric.
I am going to try using a dry erase marker to see if that works
I’m storing rice, flour and sugar today how funny is that. Great minds think a like. 😁👍🏼
Always good to stock the pantry
I have rice in bags can i slice in bag put o2 absorber in it and then seal in mylar bag
I use a plastic pitcher or a pot that’s tall enough to fill bags
Did you freeze your rice first? FYI- you have about 30 mins before the O2s start to activate- no need to panic and race and end up spilling. Look away from the light LOL thanks Leisa
Maybe she's sealing below the zipper bc the rice is specifically measured for each meal one time. But, if that's the case then non zip mylars would do.
Please. Where did you purchase those oxygen absorbers? Most brands do not come individuality wrapped.
I was vacuum sealing my unused oxygen absorbers and noticed afterwards (immediately) they felt warm. What caused that? Any ideas
What cc are the oxygen absorbers?
I just go ahead and vacuum seal the Mylar Bags! I store long-term in small quantities, so I don't have to expend my entire lot. Also, on rice I don't use o2 absorbers, nothing. But, for long-term when you vacuum seal you cut off the oxygen it automatically kills the eggs, bugs, period. Avoid the extra work. It totally works! As long as you store the vacuumed rice as dark and as cool as you can. Rice can last up to 30 years. Mylar with an 02 absorber in a sealed bucket under good temperatures will last a very long time. Throw 2 bay leaves in before sealing. You've got food forever.
I'm confused as to why you sealed it below the zip lock area instead of above it?
Can you put the white bucket 🪣 inside a black trash bag, then tape it below the rim, or enclose it all the way inside the bag to keep the light out? It would also hide the buckets if you stack and/or store items on top of them, or cover them with a blanket or something and put other items around them.
Most black trash bags allow light to pass through. Hold your bag up to a light or the sun so you see through just one layer.
I just got Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. I’m thinking of doing rice, beans, flour, sugar and potato flakes. I know the flour won’t last as long as the rest but it will surely extend the freshness at least for a little while longer. Thank you for the motivation.
Have you considered storing some potential flour as whole grains? The whole grain is nature's design for making the 'corn' (any grain) last.
I’ve only just begun my long term storage and prepping about 9 months ago. I’m learning to can also. I’m trying to figure out how to better store what I currently have right now. I have thought about whole grains and grinding myself but figured that will have to wait a little longer. For me I need to get some experience canning first. Thank you for the suggestion though. Someday.
Just a little tip...make sure the potato flakes are plain, regular ones without any fats like butter. Fats will go rancid really quick.
@@MamaBearPrepper Thank you for the tip. Mine are plain but I wouldn’t have thought to check.
@@MamaBearPrepper Rancidification is the process of complete or incomplete oxidation or hydrolysis of fats and oils when exposed to air, light, or moisture or by bacterial action-- none of which seem likely to happen inside an opaque mylar bag with an oxygen absorber in it, sealed and stored in a cool, dry place.
Question, why did you seal them below the zipper instead of on top of the zipper? Will you still be able to reuse the zipper seal once you open a bag?
I didn't realize everyone else was saying the same thing 😂
Are you sure you put that up correctly? Thought it was suppose to be sealed above the zip lock line, that way you can open it up on top THEN reseal with the zipper, right? thanks Ok the Rice, everyone I've watched until you says to put the rice in the chest freezer for 3 to 4 days, then take it out, let it return to room temp, then put in mylar in to bucket with or without oxygen absorber. I'm totally confused and I need this to be RIGHT the first time. thanks
Huh I would have sealed above the zip closure as to reclose them. But hey what do I know
Either way would work,
Yup...above or there is no point to the zipper
