We have genetic Central Diabetes Insipidus in my family, fortunately we can take synthetic vasopressin (desmopressin). I drink around 3 gallons a day when I don't take it and I didn't know it existed until I was around 20!

Even if you don't do a lot of labs, if you give desmopressin to someone with polyuria (excessive urination) and the urine volume drops significantly, you're pretty sure it's central DI with the posterior pituitary failing to produce enough arginine vasopression (ADH).
Thanks to new treatments, the water he needs per day dropped to 7 liters! I hope eventually it will be even less, but I was very happy to hear about this.

My sister in law has hypokalemic periodic paralysis, maby people see her as fine and strong, but whenever her illness attack she can't move any of her body due to low of potassium. Doesn't mean that a person looks okay outside they are okay inside.
I have had this disease for 11 years. I went 3 years untreated, it is truly horrible. Having to plan your entire life around bathroom breaks every 30 minutes to an hour and constantly having to have a drink with you. I felt like a burden to other people. I was waking up 12-15 times during the night to use the bathroom. Once doctors finally figured out what was wrong (Diabetes Insipidus) I was put on a medication called Desmopressin, and it completely changed my life. I’ve been on it for the last 8 years and I rarely have to use the bathroom at night anymore. And I can now go hours without using a bathroom and I went from drinking 10 gallons of water a day to around a half gallon or so. I know exactly what this man has been going through
@@NicolasMorus The doctors told me to monitor my fluid intake for a 24 hour period as part of the testing, it was just under 10 gallons. Like 9.7 gallons.

This drug only works for people with central diabetes insipidus (body does not produce or produces very less ADH). It will not work for the patient in the video as his ADH is being produced normally but the ADH receptors in his body don't respond to ADH. So it does not matter how much you give it to him

My wife has this, and she takes a prescription called DDAVP and it helps a lot, although she was never as severe as this guy. No doctors believed her growing up and we only found out after our son was born. We needed to have an emergency c-section and while she had a catheter the nurses noticed how much water she was drinking and how often she peed, so they have a specialist come in. We were told it was very rare, and then last year my brother in law also got diagnosed, so 2 in the same family. She still needs a lot of water and goes to the bathroom more than the average person but it's not affecting day to day life anymore.
What this guy has is actually a different condition than your wife. If your wife is taking DDVAP, that means she likely has central or neurogenic diabetes insipidus. Her body doesnt produce ADH. She can take synthetic ADH (such as DDVAP) and she is able to be closer to baseline (some are pretty much able to be normal). The guy in the video has nephrogenic or renal diabetes insipidus, which is WAY worse. His kidneys dont respond to ADH. He cant take a synthetic hormone to manage it. He is likely taking thiazide diuretics which can partially manage the disease, but it will not be nearly as reliable as things like DDVAP for central diabetes insipidus. Not to say that your wife has it easy, but this guy's disorder is just on a different level.

I used to get up anywhere from just once, to up to 3 times a night... Now, I make it a point to just sip a bit before bed. But I DO pee water out right away and my lips and skin and everything are still so DRY. I drink every few minutes and pee just about every hour or two. I appreciate this, to have one other option for my GP to look into.

Dwight, if he can’t get tap water or bottled water. He can reach out in social media to people near him and pay for some water. If that doesn’t work he can go to a drinkable fountain. If that does work it’s filtering natural water

And while you may be in a country with decent medical care, the majority of the world has sub par or restrictive medical care
@@paxhumana2015 even with diuretics, he still drinks approximately 10-15 litres per day. It is a worry that he will literally drown his body with too much water. He has been admitted to hospital a few times due to very low potassium. He is on magnesium daily to try and stop the loss of minerals from his body.
My friend's husband has this and passed it on to their son. He had a NG tube for water for the first two years of his life. I can't imagine how hard that is.

its really interesting to see someone else with this disorder, I got diagnosed with mine when I was 16, and its thought I had developed it around 12 due to a brain tumor. This guy isn't lying when he talks about how intense the thirst gets. I should also probably clarify, I have the somewhat easier to handle version of his condition, my kidneys themselves work fine, my brain is the issue, it doesnt produce the needed chemical , so i can take it in pill form to alleviate the affects.

As soon as I saw the title I knew this was about diabetes Insipidus. I suffered brain damage and had a temporary case of diabetes insipidus, which was not that bad; i had to drink at least 2 gallons of water a day to stay hydrated. As my brain damage got better, the disorder went away on its own. he has a severe, congenital case of it and i can only have respect for how he maintains a positive attitude.

Last year I had Lasik eye surgery and I had to put in eye drops every two hours. I can still remember how tormenting it was to not be able to get a full uninterrupted night's sleep; and it was only for TWO DAYS and I didn't even leave the bed. Can't imagine how excruciating it must be to not get a good sleep for 36 years.
My friend’s phone broke and she went 2-3 weeks without a phone and hated it, but as a kid she/everyone had no problem because they never had a phone anyways. Same thing. He doesn’t know what a full night of sleep is like so he can’t even determine what he’s missing out on

my mom suffers from this disease as well. the doctors were shocked she was even alive when she got diagnosed, she was diagnosed in her 30’s. she has been getting pounding migraines and constantly has to pee for as long as i can remember. her diagnosis has helped her a lot. she takes medicine everyday that helps her body be able to process water correctly, and it has helped her so much, but of course, she always has a full glass of water with her just incase. i hope everything is going well for him!

My wife has this, and she takes a prescription called DDAVP and it helps a lot, although she was never as severe as this guy. No doctors believed her growing up and we only found out after our son was born. We needed to have an emergency c-section and while she had a catheter the nurses noticed how much water she was drinking and how often she peed, so they have a specialist come in. We were told it was very rare, and then last year my brother in law also got diagnosed, so 2 in the same family. She still needs a lot of water and goes to the bathroom more than the average person but it's not affecting day to day life anymore.
This is what pisses me off. Women’s issues are almost never taken seriously by doctors unless something big happens. It’s so fucked up.

What this guy has is actually a different condition than your wife. If your wife is taking DDVAP, that means she likely has central or neurogenic diabetes insipidus. Her body doesnt produce ADH. She can take synthetic ADH (such as DDVAP) and she is able to be closer to baseline (some are pretty much able to be normal). The guy in the video has nephrogenic or renal diabetes insipidus, which is WAY worse. His kidneys dont respond to ADH. He cant take a synthetic hormone to manage it. He is likely taking thiazide diuretics which can partially manage the disease, but it will not be nearly as reliable as things like DDVAP for central diabetes insipidus. Not to say that your wife has it easy, but this guy's disorder is just on a different level.

But I DO pee water out right away and my lips and skin and everything are still so DRY. I drink every few minutes and pee just about every hour or two. I appreciate this, to have one other option for my GP to look into.

Theres a reason some people just drop dead, doctors miss things, some things aren’t fully understood even in 21st century, some conditions are rare with next to no medical research on them. And while you may be in a country with decent medical care, the majority of the world has sub par or restrictive medical care

He has been admitted to hospital a few times due to very low potassium. He is on magnesium daily to try and stop the loss of minerals from his body.

It's her choice of course, and as the kid grew older he needed fewer interventions. Still, I don't think it was a good idea.

its really interesting to see someone else with this disorder, I got diagnosed with mine when I was 16, and its thought I had developed it around 12 due to a brain tumor. This guy isn't lying when he talks about how intense the thirst gets. I should also probably clarify, I have the somewhat easier to handle version of his condition, my kidneys themselves work fine, my brain is the issue, it doesnt produce the needed chemical , so i can take it in pill form to alleviate the affects.

As soon as I saw the title I knew this was about diabetes Insipidus. I suffered brain damage and had a temporary case of diabetes insipidus, which was not that bad; i had to drink at least 2 gallons of water a day to stay hydrated. As my brain damage got better, the disorder went away on its own.

Last year I had Lasik eye surgery and I had to put in eye drops every two hours. I can still remember how tormenting it was to not be able to get a full uninterrupted night's sleep; and it was only for TWO DAYS and I didn't even leave the bed. Can't imagine how excruciating it must be to not get a good sleep for 36 years.

My friend’s phone broke and she went 2-3 weeks without a phone and hated it, but as a kid she/everyone had no problem because they never had a phone anyways. Same thing. He doesn’t know what a full night of sleep is like so he can’t even determine what he’s missing out on

Not everyone wants people to know that they’re sick. It’s modern times now and I have had every single EMT automatically check my phone medical alert and treat my condition accordingly. It’s a great idea but you must understand the stigma that may prevent people from wearing the bracelet.

my mom suffers from this disease as well. the doctors were shocked she was even alive when she got diagnosed, she was diagnosed in her 30’s. she has been getting pounding migraines and constantly has to pee for as long as i can remember. her diagnosis has helped her a lot. she takes medicine everyday that helps her body be able to process water correctly, and it has helped her so much, but of course, she always has a full glass of water with her just incase. i hope everything is going well for him!

@@k033as9 Hence why I said to get a high quality filter. Bottled water isn't much different than tap water. Add in a nice filter, and you're getting water that's better than bottled.

The absolute worst part of this must be the sleeping. Imagine never getting to sleep more than a couple hours before your body forces you to wake up and you must drink and go to the toilet, then in another couple hours or less you must go again. All night, every night, forever.
