The Rise And Fall Of D12 (FATAL) Stunted Growth Music

  • In the early 2000s this hip hop collective were off to a great start. Their debut as well as sophomore albums both went double platinum, gaining notoriety for their brash Horror core esque lyrics, Self deprecating expressions, in too deep addiction to drugs and slight comedic approach to the phrase I don’t give a f*ck. Eminem gets most the credit for being the face, while many truly don’t even know the name of his band and how talented they were as lyricist, serving as the vehicle that gave Eminem credit in the streets and in a hip hop culture in those days where seeming tough as an artist greatly helped your image. Without Eminem D12 wouldn’t be who they were of course, as he was just the right guy to help them better express their split personalities, and different enough to grab attention at first glance. Not to mention he’s one of the greatest hip hop artist of all time skill wise and on the charts he stands alone. But the same could be said about Eminem and what having D12 did for sharpening his skills, and being around a group of guys that made him acceptable and not seem contrived, and unbacked as a guest in hip hop as Lord Jamar would say. They had more than a spark when they started, but after multiple deaths within the group, too much time off and a new day and time, D12 is over. The Rise And Fall Of D12 (FATAL) Stunted Growth Music

Between Devils Night & D12 World, I can say No BS D12 made me want to rap. My style was more influenced by other rappers but just the initial feeling of wanting to be a rapper, for me, came from being a D12 fan.

My take on their stunted growth:
    1. Paul Rosenberg not letting them put out their mixtape to build buzz for Devils night and get the public familiar with them.
    2. Devils Night and D12 not having a distinct sound that let the listener know THIS is their lane. (I.E. early Wu-Tang and Mobb Deep had a distinct, grimey, Boom-Bap sound that was made for them.) As much as I love Devil’s Night, the production honestly sounds like MMLP throwaway beats or Eminem Show test beats
    3. Bizarre… (do I really need to explain?)
    4. Lack of public exposure. (From what I’ve seen, The only time D12 was brought up in the public eye back then was if they were doing an album promo run or Eminem was making an appearance somewhere. Hence why that god awful “My Band” song was made)
    5. Emergence of Royce Da 5’9” (for a hot minute) and 50 Cent
    6. Marshall not getting them Solo deals on the Shady Records Label (just like how 50 Cent signed Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, and Tony Yayo as the G-Unit group as well as individual artists)
    7. Lack of collaboration with artists outside of Eminem (Like em said on Stepping Stone, “I think of all of the trips to BET / And the rappers I wish that we woulda politicked with / Maybe y'all coulda clicked and got you some features”)
    9. Proof’s Passing / Marshall’s Hiatus & near-fatal overdosing
    10. Marshall not (really) collaborating with them after the passing of Proof. The last time Marshall collaborated with the group was on their 2011 project "Return of the Dozen Vol. 2" on the song "Fame" {ua-cam.com/video/AugZKe3bX_U/v-deo.html} then the song "Bane" {ua-cam.com/video/bPlrrz8gd_Q/v-deo.html} off the 2014 compilaton album, SHADY XV.

D12 really was over when PROOF died and it was also the beginning of the end for Em's career as well. Em is not at the end but after losing Proof it seemed like he didn't have the same energy for rap. Proof to me outside looking in his best friend and according to interviews and and different accounts was the one who pushed him to rap in the first place.
I also think that Royce Da 5'9" and to an larger extent the rise of 50 Cent derailed the group as well. 50 required a lot of Em's attention.

They were definitely too reliant on Eminem. But I don't think that was all their fault. They definitely used his fame to get their foot in the door, but I'd put the majority of the blame on the fans. They wanted everyone in the group to be like Eminem. Most of them never heard of D12 before Em. They only knew them as "Eminem's group". They didn't know D12's history. And at that time, Eminem had such a huge rise to fame that it would have been difficult for any unknown artists in a group with him to stand out on their own. And some of them just weren't strong enough to be stand out artists on their own.

That's what happens with mainstream fan base and putting on a bunch of guys from your past with no ambition besides a big payday.
Proof was the only one that actually took rap seriously.
Don't feel bad for D12, that mutual co-dependency ran it's course.
Just fucked up that it took 2 white boy mainstreamers like Em & kid rock for Detroit to get any attention. An Michigan rappers still get no love from the simps.

@@eol6632 It's not that they had "no ambition", but more that they didn't really bring anything to the table that made them stand out as solo artists. They all still release music though, and Denaun (Kon Artis / Mr. Porter) had landed production placements on a lot of major projects. And Michigan / Detroit might not have as many artists as NY or Cali, but they definitely have more than most states. I'm not a fan of the rappers you named (besides MC Breed), but there's also Danny Brown, Guilty Simpson, Slum Village / J-Dilla, Illa J, Black Milk, Boldy James, Wajeed, Obie Trice, Trick Trick, Royce 5'9", Phat Kat, Marv One, Elzhi, Big Sean...plus all the ones you named. Detroit has a lot of artists who are very well known in their respective lanes. So I'm really not sure what you're talking about saying "Michigan rappers still get no love". Cause they definitely do.

I think you're giving D12 WAY too much credit as a group. Now, as individuals, they were dope lyricists in a freestyle cypher, but as artists and as a group, they were mediocre, and never demonstrated why anyone should care about them outside of them being Eminem's homies. Their first album, Devil's Night was solid, but I attribute that solely due to Eminem's presence on the album. I kopped the album way back in the year 2001, and I've always felt that without Eminem, D12 as a group wouldn't matter - and I was right.
Honestly, these guys never had an identity as a group outside of being Emimem's homeboys. They've never made tracks on their own as solo artists, that lyrically impressed me and made me take notice of them. I don't think these guys would've ever been known outside of their local hood without Eminem's success backing them up. They're kind of like Eminem's version of GUnit - talented, but without any real appeal without their standout superstar buddy holding them afloat.

Wow finally someone gets it. D12 was just a way to pay back some guys from his past. Em wasn't that into it. Back in the day those cats where overprotective of Em cause they wanted to get paid.

The issue is that they weren't able to craft an identity outside of being "like Eminem" outside of Bizzare who was known as the "even more fucked up Eminem".
With G-Unit for example Lloyd Banks, Young Buck and Tony Yayo each had their own big songs and personalities (flows, songs and cadences). They didn't just rap like 50.
Both Proof and Kuniva have/had very impressive solo albums (Searching For Jerry Garcia and The History Of Violence series) where their subject matter/style was more unique and therefore interesting.
Kuniva was the most unlucky career wise imo since he suffered the most from the lack of identity. If you listen to any song/freestyle from D12 World up until their 2015 mixtape he was consistently showing top tier lyricism and the most humorous lines in the tracks. Straight up carrying them (with Swift still providing some good verses) from 09-15.
But a group of unknown local artists being placed on tracks with the biggest rapper in the game means two things. Firstly they will get a massive boost in exposure/sales. On the other hand they couldn't grow much of a non Eminem fan base so once they stopped making songs together 95% of his fans stopped listening to D12 (and would downplay their abilities to prop up how Eminem could never be challenged on the mic).

I love your channel bra. But everything isn't stunted growth. Most groups don't last. Rather someone breaks out as the star. Or times change. But two platinum albums aren't stunted growth as a group. They lost friends, and talent. So much respect D12

I don’t think it’s a case of them being too reliant on Eminem I just think after Proof died Eminem was in a different headspace for a while and I don’t know if he’s even heard what the other members have done in the last 15 years. Swifty and Kuniva Have upped their game a lot. Just like Eminem has and I think if Eminem would actually listen to how much they have grown as MC since then he might actually want to do something with them. I watch that interview with Sway that he did and he was acting like he can’t do the 12 anymore because he’s not the guy he was in 2006, and yeah I hear what he’s saying but I don’t think it’s ever dawned on Eminem that those guys aren’t who they were in 2006 anymore. I really do think if Eminem and Mr. Porter spent a day in the studio with the other three surviving members that at least the idea would come to Eminem that these guys are still dope and why not just do one last record for proof. D12 was everything to prove he was the leader of the group and I think if nothing else just as a tribute to him it would be really cool to see the surviving five members come back in The studio together to do one last album.
I mean if Eminem is a member of the group then yes you can see they relied on him because it’s kind of like the Joe Budden thing with slaughterhouse. How are they supposed to do a slaughterhouse album if Joe Budden just refused to get back in the studio. If Eminem just refuses to get back in the studio with them then I don’t think it’s really fair to say they’re too reliant on him because he is part of the group I mean what are they supposed to do?

I don't think current Ems style would mesh well with Kuniva and especially Swifty tho.
Whilst they can use some faster flows/technical rapping Kuniva's best work comes from storytelling tracks with funny wordplay throughout (his verses on Revelation and The Good Die Young are good examples from his D12 days). Swifty didn't really grow as much stylistically in my opinion.

@@phillatio3266 I haven't heard that name in years. I still have their promo CD. I remember them not being too popular in Philly, and they claimed to be from here. They had some buzz with the whole (new at the time) Spank Rock / hipster crowd, but that was about it. Philly is very divided when it comes to the hip hop scene. There's the hardcore street scene, and there's the underground backpacker scene. Both scenes have well known nationwide artists, but they're so separated that neither side even knows that the other exists. At the time, Chiddy Bang didn't fit in with either side here.

D12 was over the min the first album dropped. Em was doing it for payback. Proof was the only one that was taking Rap seriously and the others just wanted to knock off the tour dates to Finnish getting paid.
History gets pretty distorted and forgotten real fuckin quick.

This is just my opinion and some may take offense to this but f**k it. D12 was screwed from the beginning because they (the optics) looked like a bunch of goofy, cornball Black dudes that were d*ckriders of Eminem, that’s a horrible look for Black men. Throughout the history of music or popular culture in general, but especially in hip-hop a Black hype man or assistant to the superstar White guy(s) never got respect, what was the name of the Black dude in the group 3rd Bass and what did he do for his career, I rest my case. If they wanted respect and recognition they should’ve stood on their own and got themselves in the game and not rely on Em to carry them.
