When the rare A&W/Taco Bell location is open, as it was in Eloy, Az, just south of the I-8/I-10 interchange, when heading to Tucson, you can order an item not seen on menus is over 30 years: A Bellbeefer!
There’s still a original A & W Car Hop in Greensburg, IN with a set of bar stools and, you can sit right there at the counter. There used to be a bigger restaurant in Lawrenceburg, IN. Which is where my mom is from so, when, we lived in Ohio and came up for the fair we would stop to eat there before hand and, stop there around midnight before, we went home. When, we had moved up there, they were still open for a few more yrs and,my brother had a girlfriend that worked there. We didn’t get special privileges but, she got to wait on us and, made sure are order got made right. Aka/ we would request her. But in the 70s and, the early 80s food at restaurants were still pretty cheap. In the early 2000s, I remember there was being a few in Wisconsin but, the person, I was traveling with liked a certain location to and, that’s when, I was introduced to Root beer milk shakes, OMG! A double, fish or a country fried steak sandwich with onion rings and, just about got to get a gallon of root- beer to take home. One restaurant in Indianapolis, IN Mug IN A Bun or Edwards you can still get homemade root beer and, a gallon to go!
A & W Canada is separately owned and operated, though it maintains similar graphics and a similar menu. It has a higher profile in Canada, being the second-largest burger chain in the country with 1,029 franchises. It has a reputation in Canada for using high-quality ingredients. While the American chain abandoned the "family names" gimmick in the 1980s, the Canadian chain not only kept it, but expanded and emphasized it, so that there are now Mama, Papa, Teen, Baby, Grandpa, and Double Teen burgers, as well as a line of Chubby Chicken items. The Canadian stores are often more spacious, with a greater emphasis on dining-in, and are always spotlessly clean. Their chief competitor is Harvey's (founded in 1959), which is known for its topping system: when a burger comes off the grill, the customer is asked to select all the toppings themselves, from a large list of options, personally instructing the cook over the counter.
A&W Canada is way different then A&W US. The quality of beff & Chicken is way better then other Canadian Fast food chains including MC Garabage. True you may pay more at A&W but it's way better.
None around here anymore. Sad, i remember going with the family when i was a kid in the 70's. And yes, the girls were wearing roller skates, and would deliver right to your window. The food was great, and it didn't break the bank and ...the root beer. Yum. Now sadly, they have gone the way of the drive in and actual mens barber shops. There is a "clone" one a city away from me, but it ain't no A and W. Not horrible..but still. Sad to see things die like this.
