- This week starts off with a trip over to my 82 year old dads shop for some help breaking down my truck tires so I can replace some worn valve stems.
I also prime and paint my wheels and install some awesome 3" stainless steel exhaust. I practice the pie cutting method in order to get the bends I need to get around the transfer case .

My dad and I are pretty much the same ages as Steve and his dad. I find myself taking him out on jobs for a hand or a lift just to show how good he’s going. Maybe I should start a UA-cam channel for it lol. Big fan from Aus, love the content!
My dad staying active and feeling important, kept him alive longer.

Yes Steve, you are so very right. I lost my dad 37 years ago and I still miss him a great deal. So keep on cherishing your dad Steve like we know you do mate.
The tire changer reminded me of the late 60's early 70's when I worked at a full service "gas station". Changed many a tire on that. Might have been a Blue Point. Too long ago to remember.
my dad turned 89 not long back, and he is starting to slow down now, mun is 91, and still bakes her own bread every other day.
From personal experience, try and spend as much time as possible with your Dad. Mine past at eighty two and I miss him terribly, the only comfort I have was the time spent with him prior to his illness which took him within weeks.

My biggest complaint about daytime running lights is the fact so many folks forget to turn their headlights on in fog or at night fall leaving the back of the vehicle invisible to anyone behind you. I believe the auto manufacturers have been forced into requiring that tail lights come on with day time running lights now (I could be wrong). It's been a standard requirement in Europe that any vehicle equipped with "fog lights" is required to have rear tail "fog tail lights" (red in color and brighter) to avoid rear end collisions in fog. Your build is coming along nicely Steve, thanks for bringing us along for the journey. Stay Safe & Cheers!
This is what should happen. I live in a major metro area and quite a few folks/id10ts cannot figure out that their head lights are not on as the evening progresses. This continues as they exit the lighted expressway sections which is in excusable.
I'm not a fan of daytime running lights, HOWEVER I think that headlights/tailights should automatically come on when the windshield wipers are turned on for extra visibility in inclement weather.
It's that some manufacturers are turning the dash lights on when dusk so people think they are good to go. living in Canada where we've had daytime lights forever, it's the cars without DRL's that trick you up as you're used to seeing them
I see it all the time. Most often it'll be someone pulling out of a store or gas station. I suppose the lights in the parking lots are enough to not realize you have no gauge lights. I live in the sticks, so there are no street lights or anything, but I still see people whizzing down the road without their lights on. I've had DRLs since I bought my Jetta in 2005, yet I've never failed to turn on my lights when appropriate. It's hard to trust drivers that fail to realize they never turned their lights on at night. Or as you said, in fog, rain, etc.
@@pamike4873 you hit the nail on the head regarding gauge cluster lights. New cars often have fully digital gauges, so they're *always* lit, with or without headlights on. When cars had gauges you couldn't see at night, it was pretty clear your lights were off

BORLA. I have a 1985 sports car and has a Borla exhaust system, no mufflers at all just the HI Performance 3" pipe out the back. It's load but not to bad if you're just taking it easy, but when you throttle it up you can be heard. One of the best sounding cars I have ever owned. Have been told that from a lot of people. Your exhaust system looks fantastic. Really a great locking job. The only thing I would have done differently was switch sides with the mufflers so tho word Borla was facing down, unless it requires them to be that way. All your videos have been top notch.so interesting they go by very quickly, but it's the quality you are putting out. Keep up the great work filming and building. It's great to watch, learn and enjoy every Saturday. So till next week, be safe. And your helper is one of a kind. Thanks

At 36:30 you keep the filler wire welded to the tubing as you rotate for the next weld. This is an awesome idea that I will definitely use

A few years ago my son and I installed a 2.5" stainless exhaust on my 70 390 AMX. It took me over 2 months on my car lift in my spare time. No slip joints,tig welded. You did a great job from someone who has been there. George from Indiana
With regards to those blinding head-lights. That's one case where I'm happy with the amount of regular we have around here. Cars need to be checked every year for stuff like that... a bit overly dramatic if you ask me but it does make sure you don't get blinded ;)
That Tesa cloth tape is used on many, if not all, euro cars from the factory to wrap the harnesses. It is really durable and stays flexible and quite sticky even after some twenty years.

When you very first started this project, I thought it seemed odd to put so much effort into cosmetic repairs on an old truck. Boy was I wrong! I thought she couldn't ever be more than an old farm truck, that thing is becoming more and more beautiful. I guess it's been awhile since I saw an old square body in nice shape. Between the Wheels and everything under the hood, that's becoming a real 80s icon, particularly with that two-tone paint job.
I have no idea how you work a full time job plus do all of this work at home plus video editing. I'm glad to see your family involved with you in this process. Don't forget, God and family come first. Thank-you.

I installed a Borla exhaust on my C5 Corvette. What a sweet sound! you won't be dissapointed.

Tesa makes more than one kind of harness tape.
Fuzzy stuff for inside the cab and a high temp version for under the hood.
First start of a new engine is always so exciting!

The fabrication series showed using a paste made from ground up flux from arc rods to shield the back side = seemed to work pretty darn well

They sell a paste for the inside of the pipe to prevent sugaring without purging it.

Going to be better than new (@@)! Exhaust system look'n great. In 1982 I bought an '79 full size chevy blazer that had been rolled. to a SWB "78 flair side truck, shorten the bed 11in, and we called it "StubbY",,,Was one of the best 4x4 except the 79 Mercedes G-300 wagon, we ever owned. Have a super wk gang,,Bear & Sammie.
If you haven't already put some zip ties over the tesa tape ends to prevent it from unwrapping. In the future if you need cheap fan relays, the ones on 80s/90s Hondas by the hood latch work nicely. Wire them up the same way Honda does.
soon you will get bed on - get a fuel tank and toolbox and consider rails, also think about another battery box with disconnect, also maybe put spare tire back in bed instead of underneath, think about a headache rack/rollbar and led lites - you are almost all set! - the 3 inch exhaust was a good call - think about a lift?

Tesa tape is the best. They also make it for applications where heat is an issue.
Has been used by European automotive manufacturers for many years.
I use it for installation of automotive stereo equipment.
On start up I would spin up with the ignition disconnected to prime the oil system before first run. Great work!!! Thank for sharing !!
On SBC, you can drive the oil pump directly, via the distributor port (distributor removed, obviously). There's a ton of cheap tools made for this purpose.

I installed Borla SS in my Corvette and it sounded awesome - County Club loud.
Solar Flux Type B works great for protecting backside of stainless weld.

If you have gasket problems on your collectors get some remflex kind. They are awesome gaskets.

Need to see if she wants to learn to sand! There’ll be a lot of that needing to done shortly, but with the weather changing it should be outdoor work.

Steve so much progress since I visited you les than 7 weeks ago! Wow you must be putting in the hours! Engine built, installed. Wheels refurbished, rad panel sandblasted repaired and painted. All that wiring and fitting the rad panel and hooking pipe work up. And the piece de la resistance, the fantastic stainless exhaust! Truck is really coming together and looking great! Can’t wait to hear it fire up!

Thanks for the tip on the sandblaster kits. I have one the way for the same reason as you: I have an old set of rusty wheels that need to be painted. I wasn't sure what the best way to strip them would be and then I saw your video last week. The wheels turned out great and the whole truck is looking 👍.
If you have a pretty decent pressure washer you will not be disappointed. A couple of my wheels were rusted pretty badly on the back side and also had several layers of paint and primer. The sand blaster kits are well worth the cost.👍

For a horn look for a Wolo Big Boy. You’ll need to run a separate relay controlled power wire to run it, but it’s worth it.
If you point the exhaust underneath the car, there is a bigger risk of fumes entering the cab. I think it will also be noisier, than if you direct it further out behind the car.

Have you tried readjusting the contacts on the old horn? They wear down and eventually quit, a little tweak in with the screw often brings them back to life.

From what I've seen on nascar, etc, they don't do crossover piping. Also, someone told me that newer trucks don't do that either, if in fact it's true. You might want to check that out.

Wow, a LOT of content this week! The truck project is really coming together, and looking good. Superb-looking exhaust, so far. I vote for turn-downs at the rear bumper.
I like the tip about the Tesa electrical tape. I was going to retape my original engine harness on my Charger, that has either been attacked by rodents and/or been heat damaged.
You will not be disappointed. They make several different types. The one I have is the fabric type.
That Tesa tape is amazing. Back 20 years ago I started estimating wiring harnesses for one of the big auto companies, and Tesa came in and showed us and our engineering team this tape. They make all kinds of it, felt covered, anti-rip (which is what it looks like you are using), friction tape (no glues, just a plastic tape), etc. All kinds. They provided all of us several rolls of each as a "swag bag", and it is, as you said, the best tape I have ever used. The rip/cut resistant tape is just awesome.
Solar B flux mix with alcohol and coat the opposite side of weld cheaper and good enough for exhaust pipe
