    Hey brother, i really like your channel and find it really useful and helpful for someone like me that is trying to get more into photography.
    Am recently working to get my first camera manly for landscape and street photography.
    Next year 2022 am going to do the caminho de Santiago pilgrimage and i really want to have a camera with me to do some landscape photography and some street photography during the 10 to 15 days that the pilgrimage will take to complete.
    In your opinion do you think that this combination of a sony a6400 and the 18-105 lens is a good combination for someone that is just starting.
    Am taking the Gopro hero 9 black for my POV and for vlogging, so the camera is strictly for photography.
    Thanks for everything and keep up the amazing work brother

      Hey Paulo, that sounds like an awesome experience you have coming up. So it looks like you’re focused more on photography, which is great if that’s the case.
      Are you set on the Sony ecosystem and if so, have you seen the soon to be released Sony ZV-E10 amzn.to/2V3JDcl
      It’s very similar to the a6400 and is marketed to vloggers, however that’s really just a marketing angle because it’ll take great photos as well.
      And, for photos, I would steer you closer to the Tamron here: amzn.to/3zTiaZw
      Or the 18-135 here: amzn.to/3fcx8Ci
      The Tamron has a wider aperture which means it’ll let in more light. Either of these lenses would fit on the ZV-E10, a6400 or a6600.

    I have this lens and am very happy with it. I want a low light lens/one lens do all and was thinking of the 16-55 but it’s toooooo expensive. With the tamron leak of 17-70 2.8 with stabilization, would you be tempted to sell your 18-105 for the upcoming tamron?

      I’d really have to test it out, which I’m interested to do so. One concern I’d probably have is losing some of that focal length...however, I may also be pleasantly surprised and not really miss it 🤷‍♂️

    Thanks for your nice video.
    I just bought A6400.
    I'm new in the cameras world but got a bit knowledge. now I need your recommendation.
    My main purpose mostly is filmmaking , and photography as well. SO what do think of below options
    1- zoom lens Tamron 28-75 f2.8 + wide lens 16mm f1.4
    2- zoom lens 18-105 f4 + 56mm f1.4 for portrait
    ??????
    AND soon I will purchase a gimbal Weebill S.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  4 роки тому +1

      So, the 18-105 combo paired up with the 56mm would be my choice if you're doing some portrait work, however I have used the 18-105 for some photo work, and it's fine...but not my primary choice as the 18-105 is better for video.
      The Tamron is a great lens, but it's for full-frame. The e-mount will certainly fit onto the 6400 (APS-C) body, but your focal length will be around 40mm -112mm. Not sure if that's a concern or not, but just wanted to highlight that.

    Hi! Great video! Is it completely handheld? It looks really stable. Did you apply stabilization in post? (like warp stabilizer?)

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks! Yes, all handheld. That's the beauty of having that OSS lens. The only thing I applied was optical flow with some of those speed ramps, but didn't need to apply stabilization in the other clips, like where I was walking around town vlogging...That's just the natural look out of that lens.
      I've had a lot of practice doing handheld as I used to vlog all the time and I'm usually more run and gun without stabilizers anyway...
      Although for commercial work I would mix it up between the two (handheld and a gimbal).

    In 2020, are you still strong on the a6400?
    I'm considering getting it for my Dad. He has a woodworking shop he wants to start doing UA-cam videos in. Dimensions are a rectangular 200 sq.ft. (10'x20' approx). There will be lighting specifically for shooting (source lights, soft boxes, etc.). I believe I will end up doing most of the video work while he manages the tools lol. I don't have much experience with video, but knowing the constraints on the intended use; would the a6400 and this Sigma lens make sense for shooting these videos?
    I don't believe this lens has any macro function which is something I know he wants, for close up on certain tasks, but he is looking for a more cinematic look, rather than the prototypical wide angle shot that DIY'ers use. Really, wants to avoid the entire ensemble of prototypical UA-cam woodworking videos; the wide angle shot, normally coupled with the sped up video, backed by the chipmunk audio of shop sounds :D Not bashing it, I just know from speaking with him, that isn't his cup of tea, nor his intention.
    With the specific lighting in the shop for video work, I would imagine we could get away with f4, I think the main concern is the macro requirements, and if the shots will be too close given the shape of the garage, and the fact that there are tools to work around.
    Thanks!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 роки тому

      I still use the 6400 daily.
      As far as the macro, you could look at something affordable like this lens from Sony: amzn.to/3n25mdy
      You can also just use it for portrait style, or just as a regular lens. It would be about a 50mm equivalent on a full-frame, but not built in zoom. It would be a fixed focal length. There are other macro options that are a bit more expensive though.
      Is he going to do any handheld shots or mostly locked of on a tripod or stand?

    Hi Kevin,
    Appreciate the honest and candid reviews!
    Subbed and going through a few of your videos on Sony’s APCS cams and lenses.
    Nice Atlas backpack. I have the same. Super comfortable. Allan nailed it.
    I just purchased the a6600 for when I need portability and I don’t want to bring my ff.
    For stills, I shoot mostly landscape, street, portrait, products, action sports, and travel. I use mix of primes and zooms, in particular Tamron 17-28/2.8 and 28-75/2.8. I believe I can use them on the a6600 but it will be cropped 1.5x.
    For videos, I will start up and wanted to get your thoughts on the following options:
    - Option1: Go with the 10-18/4 (like the ultra-wide and OSS) + 18-105/4 (like the internal zoom and OSS) + Sigma 16/1.4 (for lowlight); or
    - Option2: Use my EF and EFS glasses with Viltrox EF-E ii which supposedly can take advantage of the afc but there is not much videos out there about it. I use the MC-11 for my ff bodies and stills works well (not all) but video afc doesn’t work. I just love Sony af system.
    Thanks in advance! Keep creating and stay safe.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  4 роки тому +1

      Very thankful for your feedback!
      Yes, the Sony AF is just absurd how good it is. And, if you've done a little research then you might find that some of that EF glass may take advantage of it (I don't have any to test), but it depends on what you want/need for real world as far as how fast. Now, the Sigma you asked about here is freakin fast as a third party. Just as fast anything Sony native. I barely take take that lens off. I shoot with it so much. However I do love the 18-105. It was my first lens purchase. I strictly use this for video however. Sure, it can shoot photo and I did do a video on that with the a6500, but I'd steer you over to the 18-135 if you're going to use it mostly for photo. Although tough to beat the constant f4 though when punching in since the 18-135 is variable.
      Question though, how much to you think you'd be using the 10-18 if you had the Sigma? The equivalent FF focal length on the Sigma is 24mm, so if you need wider then I understand. Tamron is definitely a great lens...Have you already tried that on the a6600 to see what that looks like or are you still waiting on the body to come in?
      Just trying to see about pairing some things down here if needed and making sure you don't have too much overlap with your focal lengths, however I'll admit that it is nice to have some options.

    • @nomad0714
      @nomad0714 4 роки тому

      Hi Kevin,
      Thanks for the quick reply.
      Yeah the EF lenses in stills with the MC-11 is very fast on the A9. Got it for a steal but the a6600 will get me into video.
      The a6600 is on the way so I need to wait for it to come to test it on the Tamron 17-28/2.8 and 28-75/2.8. They are both tact sharp and fast for stills. Haven’t done much with it on video
      Yes I don’t want overlap and heavy setup for video and why I am looking to see if the a6600 + 18-105/4 + 16/1.4 or 10-18/4 is a better combo. The 16/1.4 is great for lowlight + bokeh + tact sharp and the 10-18/4 has OSS + wider field of view.
      I’m new to video but plan to shoot broll, street, landscape, product, and travel. Which combo would you recommend?
      Thank you!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  4 роки тому +1

      For video, I'm just going to go back to what my two (best) lenses are in my bag. The 18-105 and the Sigma 16. I've traveled with only these two lenses for video work and it's all I've needed. Except one scenario where the 10-18 may be more helpful and that is (for me) real estate video. This is where I highly recommend a wider angle...Now of course you don't have to be a real estate photographer or videographer. It's just nice if you find yourself getting establishing shots in tighter spaces. You'll likely get a little bit of lens distortion that you may need to crop in on or correct for in post, but very minimal.
      Let's throw in another thought. Are you aware about the "zoom" function with these cameras when using primes? You may have researched it, but I did a video on it. You don't have to check it out or anything, however it may help you think about getting just a touch more out of that 10-18 if you really want it. ua-cam.com/video/PYZLs5AhQ-I/v-deo.html

    Great video! So since you said you are all about conversing with your subscribers in the comment section..I want to run something by you...7 months ago I got into drones...13 drones and a UA-cam channel later lol I have been using gopros and my iPhone XS for outdoor shots of the drones, talking to the camera and indoor unboxings and reviews. Now indoor my studio is kinda low light..even with some added lighting, so the GoPro hero 8 doesn’t do that well..plus I’m still learning the darn things and so I decided to start researching mirrorless cameras, lenses and all the technical stuff. Now that I feel more comfortable I have decided the Sony a6400 is the right camera for me. I’ll tell you what lenses I have in mind and why, and I was hoping you could tell me if I’m on the right path or if I should go with something else. I don’t just want to buy lenses for my drone video stuff, I’d like to have room to grow and experiment with landscape and portrait shots, as well as some sort of simple music videos for my music projects. So for low light, night time, reviews in my dark studio I figured the sigma 16mm would be good since it has that 1.8 or 1.4 (can’t remember at the moment) also I only have about 6-7 feet to move the camera away from me so I think it’ll be good to get myself, my desk and whatever I’m reviewing in the frame. But I also don’t want it to look to wide and stretched out. I figure it’ll be good for outdoor stuff too, dark or light! Then I thought since I can’t find a lens with that 1.4 or 1.8 aperture with a focal range of 18-100+ I might want to get another 1.4 or 1.8 prime lens like a 30mm or a 50mm, so I have another option for low light as well. Just sucks I won’t have the ability to zoom as far as I know...now for the daytime, bright sunny days I was thinking this lens, the 18-105. But I wonder is the f4 something you really need a Bright sunny day for? Would something closer to 2.0 or 3.0 be better? Since the other lenses I chose for low light can be adjusted to 4whatever aperture I need I consider those good for bright daylight as well. Most of what I do is for video by the way , but like I said I’d like to do some photography as well. So in summary..sigma 16mm, Sony 30mm and Sony 18/105. Does it sound like I’m on the right path? If I had to choose just two lenses for what I want to shoot which ones would you pick , or if I had to choose 3. I’m def not interested in the kit lenses lol. Anyways, sorry for the lengthy comment, thanks in advance for the help!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  4 роки тому +1

      I appreciate all the information here. So let's break it down.
      As far as the Sigma 16mm, I really can't say enough good things about it. And, for your particular indoor need of being in a small space, it should be just fine. In my talking head portions of my videos (in studio) I'm about an arm's length away from the camera. As far as the zoom functionality on the prime lenses, I did do a video here: ua-cam.com/video/PYZLs5AhQ-I/v-deo.html
      You've got an option to get a bit more length out of the lens.
      Now, as far as the 30mm, it's also a great lens. The 56mm however would give you an 85mm equivalent and this could also be used for portraiture at a longer focal distance...if that's something you're interested in.
      The 18-105 for video is a tough one to beat. If you told me that you'd be doing more photo than video then I might steer you over to the 18-135: amzn.to/2B5vzFe It's better for photo in my opinion, but only slightly. It also has a variable aperture f/3.5-5.6, so not a constant f4 all the way through.
      If you're outside, then f/4 is fine. In fact, if you're in the sun then you're likely going to be somewhere at f/11 or higher. Unless you're using ND filters, which I most definitely use and I especially use these on the Sigma outdoors. It's almost a must have.
      As I've said before, if I had the 16mm and the 18-105 in my bag, then I wouldn't need much else. In fact, on many shoots these are often the only lenses in my bag for video.
      And you're right about the kit lens. Sure, it's nice as a start to get familiar with the camera and filmmaking, but once you go beyond the kit lens, it just takes your production way up.

And even though it’s not one I considered, for the price I thought why not? Def gonna go with the 16 and the 18-105 though! One other question, what is the Benefit of using a filter instead of adjusting the aperture?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  4 роки тому +1

      $150, uh yeah. If it's in good shape, might as well.
      As far as the filter goes let's say that you'd like to have some bokeh or to keep some separation foreground and background, and being able to come in at f/1.4-2.0 to keep that separation would be hard in daylight as you'd be overexposed. The filter would give you that option of stopping down without messing with your aperture.
      And a kind of silly reason would be that it's also faster...but you also have to get used to a filter just so you're not vignetting or getting the "X" pattern across the lens...that happens more when you are really stopped down.

This is just how the sensor is setup in these cameras... The full frame cameras do better with this, but it's still there...
      Although, not sure how much you follow Sony, but the soon to be released A7siii has significantly improved rolling shutter, or rather less rolling shutter.

      Gotcha. So you're going to get similar performance, and the 10-18 being an f/4 throughout the focal length is also a benefit of the 18-105. This lens (the 18-105) was my first vlogging lens...the first lens I actually purchased. The 10-18 is definitely nice if you need that wider perspective, but as I said in the video, the 18mm works fine for me as far as distance from my face. I assume you've checked the 18mm focal length on your lens to see if you'll be okay with that starting focal length?
      The Sigma 16mm and the 18-105 are my two (main) lenses for just about all the filming I do out in the field. Do keep in mind that if you do purchase the 18-105 to double check that the firmware on the lens is updated...not that I had issues with it, but the update seemed to help grab focus quicker.

    Why not 18-135 which comes with the body

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  5 років тому +3

      Fantastic question, and something I meant to address in this video specifically, although I may end up reviewing/comparing these lenses.
      A couple of differences is that the 18-135 has that variable aperture that may not suit certain filming conditions. The focal length goes to 135, which is obviously more than the 18-105, however if you're working on a gimbal, as you Zoom you start to lose the balance on that set up since the Zoom is not internal. The power zoom function on the 18-105 can also be a benefit with video.
      The 18-135 is a newer lens, and some say it's pretty sharp (and some say sharper than 18-105), but I think you'd have to ask yourself what you're going to be using the lens for primarily. For video, this lens is just really hard to beat for the price.
