      nah, those sequels looked very low budget even though they came out years after the first film, this one has a visual style worthy of a film, it's just that the script needed to be on a larger scale.

    It's ironic how Disney has been criticized as of late for their MCU and Star Wars shows feeling like elongated movies, and now in their attempt to revamp a show into a movie, everyone's pointing out that it feels like a shortened TV show

      It’s especially difficult for animation because of the time consuming nature of the medium. I imagine it would have taken a solid 3 years at least to turn this into a great film. I think Disney made the right call putting out. One year wouldn’t have been nearly enough time to fix the songs and the story. It’s already making bank at the box office. It’s definitely better than despicable me 4 and sing 2 and those movies were big financial successes. I would bet that Dan’s friends’s kid would really enjoy this movie. It looked fantastic and I am a huge animation buff.
      Illumination is the king of animation now and this is one of the closest Disney animation titles to their work in terms of story and jokes.

      That’s because it literally is a short TV show. It’s not like oh it’s one or the other. When they try to make a TV show, they make a stretched out movie instead. Then to make money, they condensed a TV show into a movie. Both are bad products.
      Disney’s issue is instead of focusing on and telling an intentional necessary story they focus on checking boxes or doing what they think will make the most money. The story never comes first

    I was worried this would happen when the announcement was made earlier this year. I really wonder how long the studio and the animators knew that the series was getting retooled. Animation takes so long and is so expensive. But Disney was so desperate for a big animated hit after Strange World and Wish bombed that they probably didn’t care so much about the quality. They knew Moana 2 was gonna make money, so they took what animation had been completed and probably had it spruced up a bit. The reason LMM isn’t back, I’m sure, is because the songs were written for the series years ago and it would have taken too long and been too expensive to hire LMM to write new songs, have them orchestrated, recorded and newly animated in time for the release. Same thing with the late confirmation of the voice actors. They probably signed a deal with Disney for a TV show and had to renegotiate their contract once it turned into a theatrical movie.
    I just wish they had given this movie more time, or, better yet, made a sequel separate from the series. It’s just disappointing because the original is so good and means a lot to so many people (myself included). It just feels like Disney wanted a surefire money maker rather than a quality movie. I’m sure it will do well, but it won’t be remembered so fondly, which only hurts Disney in the long run.

    • @A-ro-2803
      @A-ro-2803 2 дні тому

      I’m not sure it does hurt them in the long run. Frozen 2, Minions, Cars, Shrek sequels after 2, Finding Dory animation has a way different bar than something like the MCU or Star Wars. None of these have prevented or damaged future hits like Puss in Boots, Inside Out 2, or the Mario Movie.
      Worst case scenario and most likely it’s an unremarkable movie and no one remembers it in 5 years. Best case scenario is that it sticks with the kids for years and becomes pure nostolgia cash cow.
      Overall thought it did enough to warrant a Moana 3, that I guarantee will get the full might of Disney animation behind it.

    • @A-ro-2803
      @A-ro-2803 2 дні тому

      Also like I said elsewhere, and you sort of alluded to. It needed a LOT of work to be truly great, three years at least, IMO. There really was no hope for this to really shine, so might as well throw out what they had, which definitely is a completely tolerable film. Keep the young kids interested with new content about an extremely popular character and expect to do better with Moana 3.

    Spoiler review: While still fun, it's just a rehash of the first film. Her urgency for the new journey is almost a copy paste of her first one but almost lacks any new character development. !!Spoiler!!Her becoming (presumably) a demigod doesn't feel as earned as her epic moment facing the lava monster. Maui also lacks any development and doesn't get to interact with Moana until I think the second half. The "villains" are just MCU-style cameos to tease the threequel. The crew is fun in their own way but I'm not exactly clamoring for them. Heihei now got twice the screen time and just gets tiresome half the time. Pua doesn't really add anything to the plot or gags other than Maui calling them eggs and bacon. None of the new songs are as memorable as from M1. The best part of the songs and score are just the callbacks from the M1 like the only memorable part of Beyond is the "I am Moanaaa!" part from the first movie. Matangi has the best new song imo but the bar isn't really high. If you watched and liked the first film back in 2016 you will enjoy this on some level but if you didn't then this is an easy skip.

    Ouch, I have to say. Not even a huge fan of the first film, but it seems my worst fears with the nature of this "sequel" have been realized with much of it's nuts and bolts as a series still apparent here and there. But then again, it doesn't really matter with the personal opinion on stuff like this. It's comfort food for the families, so all that can be said is if it will present itself well enough to get their ticket stubs.

    I wasn't crazy about the first Moana, but I could see the merit and quality of the film and story, i cannot say the same about Moana 2. Definitely felt fast paced and choppy. Some ideas just droppped, redeeming aspects not utilized, characters doing nothing. I would much rather have rewatched Wicked again. Unfortunately, people will still watch it and it will do well in the box office even though stuff like this shouldn't be acceptable from such a massive company. I'd much rather wait for it to do terrible and be thrown on disney+ like it should've been originally.

      @@chasehedges6775frozen 2 was a bigger crime. They knew they had an enormous hit on their hands and put their A team on making a sequel and gave them tons of time. Moana’s success was extremely grassroots. It was not a huge hit until the Disney plus toddlers hit the scene. It and Bluey are the definitive choice of parents subscribed to Disney plus to throw on and parent their kids. Much like Cocomelon is/was on Netflix. And in that sense, and aiming at that audience, this movie is dead on target.
      My four year old loved moana 2 WAY more than inside out 2 or minions. By no means is it a great movie. But I do think it will be very successful. The jokes are pretty funny. It really seemed like this film was the first half of a good movie, as it spends so much time setting things up in ways that aren’t super interesting and then almost immediately dives into the final act with no twists or turns, no expansion of the lore or exploration of the legends of the pantheon beyond a newcomer that has the best song and then is forgotten for the rest of the film.
    TL;DR it felt like a first draft that was rushed and never meaningfully revised.

    I actually really enjoyed it. My main concern was that they re-hashed a few jokes and wink wink nod nods about the previous film too many time that made it feel a little "streaming series". However, I throughly enjoyed the new characters and to me at least, I found the expansion of the story to be lot more interesting than the first to some degree. But then again, I like films that expand on what was done before. I thought Frozen 2 was much better than the original. I admit the first film feels a lot more unique but I really enjoy story driven films even if they are a bit sloppy.
    I really liked some of the some of the songs too. I think one is called "Beyond" and "Get Lost". You could argue the "How far I'll Go" is more memorable but things are always more memorable the first time especially when there is a Sogn attache because a new story has to be told. People complained "Into the Unknown" wasn't as good as "Let It Go". Of course it wasn't. Let It Go was lightning in a bottle. Doesn't mean that Into the Unknown isn't a moving song. I think people expect too much from sequels, musically. I don't think it works the same as non-musical films. The Open Door by Evanescence will never be loved as much as Fallen. Meteora will never outshine Linkin Park's Hybrid theory. Notice the pattern? Having Lin Manuel Miranda may not have changed that. It certainly didn't help Mary Poppins Returns. Just my two cents but I don't need songs be "just as good" the previous ones. Just that they are good songs that work well for the plot. And I feel like some of the musical beats are hit a little harder in this film. Like, there's a scene when the entire island is seeing Moana off. I've never been to a traditional Polynesian ceremony but it felt like an authentic piece of culture. I dunno. I can't think of any movie musical sequels that people like as much as the first. The isn't an A+ but saying it was really bad feels like a bit of exaggeration.

    Just like many, many, many, many other Disney movies today, I'll be waiting for this to hit Disney Plus, and even then I'll probably watch it one or two months after it hits Disney Plus

    This sequel, another "photo real" Lion King (even if they say they've slipped in more cartoonish mouth movements to help with emoting), then back to Moana again for a "live action" remake even though it will have only been 10 years? Holy crap Disney is creatively bankrupt. So glad my kids have drifted away from this content, in this age of rising theater costs this one is an easy pass. The ironic thing is most will see it on Disney+ -- the place that Disney execs didn't want to premier it.

    I’m a very big fan of the original Moana but this movie just looks absolutely soulless. I still have no idea what this sequel is even about let alone why Disney felt the need to continue the story which had a pretty definitive ending (aside from the obvious capitalist sitting in the boardroom) . I’m just disappointed that this is now a part of Moana’s theatrical legacy
