Chris that's fantastic and a huge recognition of your own work. I'm supposed to go to work in Germany soon and for the next couple years, so after 4 years stuck in rural Thailand I'm hoping to catch some of the legends in Europe. Tim Thanks for the many variations of one of the major soundtracks of my "Class of '77" life. Yes, we feel like you do!

Rick, Anyone that saw Humble Pie back in the day all knew how good both Pete & Steve were . I saw them twice before Frampton left once with Black Sabbath & once with King Crimson & they were awesome shows packed with talent. Ah the good ole days & though Peter strayed into commercialism it wasn't long before he came back to the playing that we all love & it always shows in his face . It will be a sad day when his condition gets to the point he can't play but till that day he's never going to lay down & let it go. He's playing better than ever still . So i would agree with you 100% that foray into BS music did not prevent him from being one of the best players on the planet. A little note here when Humble Pie opened for Sabbath in 71 Pie played for 2 1/2 hours Sabbath played for 45 minutes & left with no encore . Humble Pie literally blew them off the stage & Black Sabbath was still good as hell but they knew they had been bested !!!. The concert was in MD at The Alexandria Roller Rink & if i recall tickets were around 3 bucks.

Frampton Comes Alive! blew up when I was 13 and was the first I'd heard of him. I didn't know he was massively famous. All I knew was the guitar work was beautiful and seemed perfectly executed, which was unusual for live albums. His guitar seemed like the 5th member of the band and his unending hooky licks meandered throughout the songs enhancing the melody as well as the vocals. Peter is a genius. That Les Paul tone is unforgettable--to this day, I can still hear it ringing in my head. The double album was also perfect for cleaning my weed. lol

“Frampton Comes Alive” was the live album released when I was in high school, way back. As a guitar player, I knew Frampton was an incredible player but what got in his way were his perfect looks and that all the girls were crazy over him. I’ve seen some recent videos of him from the early 2000’s and he was still rockin’ hard, so tasteful and everything makes musical sense!
Peter Frampton was a major player and always seems to be so personable in interviews!

At 11:25 or so... "if you remember to not always pick so hard" on a Les Paul. Always good advice for LP players. Restrain yourself, my friends. It's very easy to get carried away with the power of the resonance and sustain and get carried off by it until it's a cliche and a lot of what we're making is noise. I think the trick is to lay back a lot more, lighten the touch and save the aggression and balls for emphasis and punctuation. I love the noise but sound better when I hold it back. Peter Frampton is a good master class at this. His attack and volume are always appropriate.

I was sales manager of one of the early vintage guitar stores in America (pre Norm). My employer talked Johnny into buying and (I think) using Firebirds. I the movie about Johnny the interviewer asked him where did the Firebird thing come from? Johnny said "ED Seelig in St. Louis". The interviewer asked again not getting the question had already been answered. That store (which was forced into closing its brick and mortar location by gruff Russian speaking guys buying up property) and its owner is as much a part music history as you Tim. He is definitely worth a call just to hear some of the stuff. For instance, the SG Derek Trucks played for years he got from Ed at Silver Strings. By the way, Johnny Winter was one of the nicest people you would ever meet- he always treated you as an equal (not like he was a rock star being nice to you). Kind of like you Tim.

Tim I saw Peter Frampton play when I was 14 years old, probably around the time of the video clip you have of him there. It was in Birmingham, Alabama. He played the drums on "Do You Feel Like We Do" just like he did there. His drummer at the time, not sure if it was John Siomos or not, came down out front and played a flute solo while Peter kept the beat on the drums. It was greatness! Roll the clock ahead 40something years to my 57th birthday. My wife got me tickets to see him again in the Woodlands, TX.. He was even more amazing. What was really cool about that show was that he played the Phoenix Les Paul that I saw him play all those years ago. Thanks Tim!

I read the subject and knew this was going to be about Frampton. I can remember the summer of 1976 where that live album was playing everywhere, every car had an 8 track player with it stuck in it, 3 or 4 songs from the album were on heavy rotation on New York rock radio.
Bad management? Over saturation? He was made into something safe and we like our guitar gods to have an element of danger to them. In my opinion Frampton certainly should be in the same conversations as Clapton, Hendrix, Page, etc...
Tim Peirce is amazing, I take his lessons on TrueFire. And he has taught me so much. This is not a knock on Tim but around 1:50 you can hear Tim's soloing style sneak through this terrific Frampton impersonation.

I remember how much fun I had learning back then... lol. No computers, just albums, ears, and a lot of love to figure it out. I have actually forgotten more than I know, lol.

Peter's guitar also has a 2 pickup toggle switch, only connected to the neck and bridge pickups, using the top volume and tone controls with the middle always on, connected to the bottom volume and tone controls, allowing any 1, any 2 or all 3 pickups! He said in an interview that he plugs in to the normal channel of his Marshalls, (the top channel 2 input) then jumps the channels and adds just a little of channel 1 to get the right amount of top end.

:28 "hahahah you thought I wouldn't nail that, didn't you???" hahaha Peter Framptom on that song... it was just so so cool. It's like that was his magnum opus and that was that. It's like Ted Nugent's Stranglehold. One huge tune... the rest just okay. I mean, when's the last time you heard Great White Buffalo on the radio? The talkbox made took it to a new level also. Not new but just unusual enough to make it unforgettable. Tim Pierce... nailing it.

Bravo Tim! This has been so inspiring. I'm sorry I couldn't be here for the live but what a great jam! Stardom certainly can overshadow such musical depth, so thank you for bringing out so many facets of Peter Frampton's amazing talent.

Saw him and Phoenix a couple of years ago. His phrasing is so lyrical which I think set him apart from most players, even some great ones.

You nailed it! I remember Peter from The Herd. Back then his nickname was "The (pretty) Face" which tells a lot. Only recently have I found out what a good guitarist he is!

Peters use of octaves is legendary. The way he plays Jumping Jack Flash with octaves is nuts! His solo on Stone Cold Fever studio and live is what really wanted me to play like him. Peter is a one of a kind and I can pick his solos out from a hundred other players.

I remember getting Frampton Comes Alive in high school in the early 90s-- based on the cover and some legend mutterings in magazines. I remember being mesmerized by it while listening to it all through a school field trip. Some scruffier rawk dudes saw me listening to it and slagged it off but man, were they missing out.

Great video, great commentary, thanks Tim. Simple answer is yes. But I also remember just being so sick of hearing Frampton Comes Alive on jukeboxes, the radio, and it wasn't until years later that I came to understand how great of a player Frampton was and is.

Frampton is, without a doubt, one of my favorite guitar players. His phrasing, melodic structuring, modality and passion as a player make him one of the handful of players who I consider to the best of the best. And, let us not forget, he is also an exceptional songwriter. I was a fan long before he achieved his solo fame.

One of the greats. Got to see him when the live album came out. It was one of the best shows ever. He opened for the the Faces in Sacramento with seals and croft.

Peter is the reason I wanted to play guitar in the first place. I purchased Humble Pie's "Humble Pie Performance Rockin' The Fillmore" when it was released back in May of '71. It was his playing, which was so different from any of his contemporaries, on that record, his tone and the pictures of him with that GORGEOUS Les Paul (still my favorite Les Paul), now named "The Phenix", that made me want to play guitar.
My wife and I have been fortunate enough to have met him on several occasions and he's always been a gentleman. He was then and remains to this day, my all-time favorite guitarist.

Your right....as I have been studying this one, he uses this style to drive the scales that mash up between D/F/C. I got the song to come together but each 16 bars change slightly throughout.

I think that one of the reasons Frampton has been overlooked is because as a solo artist in the 70s his music was more pop than Rock. I know back then I didn't like his songs very much despite the great guitar solos. Another great but overlooked guitarist is Christopher Cross who gets overlooked because of his schmaltzy music.

Always loved Framptons playing. He plays with such great feeling. He's another guitarist that could be great without playing everything at light speed.
