Couple people said white cat to me in private due to the anal fin being more rounded and having less than 24 rays - I’m not 100% confident at picking out the difference between channel and white cats
Easily would have been the record in NC, the NY state record 10lbs 5oz fish was only 25.5" long. the NJ record of 14lbs 4oz was only 27"...
I think that’s a really big channel catfish, but I could be wrong. If it is a channel it’s a beast, but it’s really washed out. If it’s a white cat, it’s an absolute monster.
I think your right, when you see the profile of the head it's 100% channel cat, just a giant one. White catfish I've caught have a broad rounded head just like a blue cat
Thanks so much for the videos, it’s nice to see the diversity you bring to fishing when the conditions are not up to par.
This guy has magic touch for catching fish wherever he goes, awesome video 👍
not how deep ya fish, but how ya wiggle yer worm
@@secretjourney4815 - Hahahahahaha giggity giggity!
I love catching white perch. They are the warm up in spring fishing and helped put dinner on the table when I was a teenager. Those were brutes!
Your videos are consistently solid and easy to watch. Please keep making more!
White perch and White Catfish, not familiar with either one. Thanks for taking me along Elias. Fun video.
I could be wrong, but I genuinely think that was a massive channel cat. No matter what, this was a great video.
Awesome catfish! They fight so hard even the big channels! 👊 💪🐈 🐟 🎣
The catfish at 15:21 is a white catfish a really nice one too! Looks like you can tell the difference between the channel and the white catfish is by the fin where the channel has a more pronounce "V" shaped fin.
This catfish had a forked tail, def a channel
I love that back water relaxed fishing. Glad that you mix it up and do stuff your either not comfortable with or just to do something different. That was a hog if it was a white cat!! I’ve caught them in the lower bay on the wicomico river, mixed in with a couple channels and majoritively blues. Think my best is about 18”.
Quite a variety of fish in coastal water ... even if the Stripers stayed home. A catch & cook of those Perch would be interesting. Whether a distinct species, or a hybrid, that Catfish was a bruiser.
It is a tough call, the tail definitely is more rounded, but that head and the general coloration to me says channel catfish. I have caught a few larger white cats on the Upper Chesapeake, the heads tend to be much wider (more cartoony) and body bit more stubby when they get up near that size range. I have also caught large channels with a more rounded tails (I think a factor of age and territory). I really do not know, leaning Channel, but might be White! Either way, fun on lite tackle!
Nice day on the water. I was after some catfish through the summer here on the lower Yadkin. Nice to see ya catching the mixed bag. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate this weekend and I can try a little lake therapy.
This is the video I've been waiting for I remember this spot from last year love those white perch just got a new subscriber thanks for making vid !
You have gift! Great teacher
Elias, Get a Big Catfish. Show us your day your way. God Bless
I'm leaning White Cat, tail fin isn't as forked as Channel as you mentioned being biggest clue. Up here in Virginia Beach we've got Whites all over, I've caught many, most by accident. That was easily a VA record you had there.
I always enjoy your videos, Elias. You have the knack!
I wish we had those white perch where I live in Florida. That was a really nice cat on a small profile jig!!
Great fishing. Would love to get my kids on some of those white perch. Any hints on the lake you were fishing
I commented before that I felt the big cat was a channel and I apologizing for not elaborating. I've caught plenty of cats and am a very avid freshwater angler. When channel catfish grow very large (over 10 pounds or so) they almost take a new shape. There heads can get unbelievably wide for the shape of their body as compared to that of smaller channels. Another popular kayak angler, ND Yak Angler has caught some GIANT channel cats on his UA-cam channel and those giants had massive, wide heads like the one you caught. That fish you caught was an absolute, super fat beast and I think his head, tail, and gut looked wide and big, because that fish was huge. Even looking back on your older videos with white cats, they have a more grey color as opposed to this fish's cream coloring, suggestive of a channel. I could be wrong, but this is my reasoning.
Btw, thank you for making videos that got me very excited about saltwater. I started going more and finally caught my first striper over 28" and it was something amazing I'll never forget. Tightlines.
Looks like a white catfish. They are sometimes called white bullheads, which you stated it had a head like a bullhead. They also typically have white or yellow chin barbels.
Awesome day of fishing!!
We have white catfish in Maryland, Elias...and all the others, especially big blue cats..
Nice size perch!! I’ve only caught them at 7 inches max down here
Another great video! Do you mind sharing how your rigging your camera to your chest?
The large catfish you caught may have been a BSCF. That is the scientific designation, means big slimy catfish. Great video, thanks.
The white perch are everywhere at Lake Tillery. Very good catfish bait.
You prefer them chunked in cold water or live?
@@EliasVFishing 90% of the time I use chunked.
Great day fishing. What’s the deal with the eyelets on that rod? The first one looks loose! Or maybe one or two others hard to tell.
I kayak fish around oak island and want to try some areas north of me. Do you use an app to find access points to launch from?
Love the perch videos giants
That bucktail with a stripe of perch sounds like a great masterful thought of pinning it all down!! Great job!! Again!! Godspeed brother
Its all about the eating for me. I like to catch and give away good eating fish like that as long as I am not keeping too many to disrupt the balance of the biomass.
Was this just after thanksgiving? I think I might have seen you. I was walking around with my kids and we where watching you for a bit. I fish out of a hobie outback and always take note when I see a kayak fisherman. I would have been pumped if I know that was you, love your channel, and am actually a patreon supporter. I do great in the river but have always struggled at that place. Lots of snags with those flooded trees but I know there's monsters in there. I bet there's a 14lbs + Large mouth in there. I always learn a lot from your videos and just maybe Ill bump into you on the water someday.
Is this out of the castle hayne boat ramp? I've been looking at fishing that area and trying to figure out what fish are in that area
“You don’t have to kill every fish”- great quote that all fishermen should hear!
Another quality video from the GOAT 🐐. I’ve got to find out what river systems around Wilmington carry white perch, my freezer would welcome some of those babies.
The Waccamaw River !
Great work, thank you for sharing
I think that’s a channel, when they get big they start looking a little different. White catfish have a very large head compared to their body I believe
Very nice fishing 👍🎣
That is a monster white
Ive never seen a live white catfish or channel catfish but I googled it and looked real close and my call is white cat. Anal fin less than 24 rays, though hard to count, and tailfin not deeply forked, head perhaps more blunt. Though some tells point towards channel cat too.
I personally believe that’s a channel catfish, not a white catfish. The way you can tell is channel cats have an overbite, for bullheads the mouth is even. Also white catfish are a lot more pale white/pink and pretty ugly imo. They also have different eyes, for me it’s easy to tell but for others it’s not so easy. Still a really nice fish, super fat
Edit: also, the fish you caught had a pretty flat head while white catfish have a rounder and bigger head compared to their body
Dude those were some thicccc white perch !
I’m definitely thinking it’s a channel. I live in md and we have all the same species
Elias, would I fish in the same manor around the creeks in Oriental NC ? Where would you recommend? Thank you, greatly enjoy your videos.
Probably saltier around Oriental. Reds trout and stripers in those creeks
I’m no expert, but have caught most all the cat species. To me that sure did look like a large male Channel cat. They get that big head like that
The white catfish are way more different when you catch a white catfish you’ll know for sure they’re heads are huge
What’s up Elias, what chest mount are you using?
I caught and released the nc record white cat in 2020. 12lbs. Didn't know enough about them to realize what I had
What is the lure you been catching them perch on call?
Hey Elias I noticed you run both hummingbird and Lawrence graphs on your 2 rigs
I’m going to get a graph for Christmas this year and was wondering your opinions about graphs
I’m on primarily a dock/shoreline structure fishery with very minimal near shore structure less than 20’ of depth a couple of examples of my typical near shore stuff would be like a 6” conture drop or like 4 basketball sized loosely scattered boulders I’m looking at going with a Lawrence or a garmin unit probably a 7” or a 5” model in your experience do you have any particular preference between garmin Lawrence and hummingbird I am most familiar with hummingbird graphs but it’s mainly older units around 2010 models
I prefer my Humminbird to my Lowrance for the most part. Lowrance is easier to rig up on a Hobie, and that's about the only thing going for it.
Fish biologist here. I'm pretty confident that was a white catfish, and a MASSIVE one at that.
How did you go about it? Count the rays on the fin?
@@EliasVFishing it's hard to get an accurate count of the fin rays from the video, but I think it's fewer than 24 which says white catfish. I've never seen one near this big, but I've seen enough to feel pretty confident in the ID from the appearance of the head and tail. Either way it's a beast!
Yep channel cat.😊
Dead bait and sunbum do not
Mix. I don’t know if you cleaned your hands off between rigging cut baits but any sunscreen residue on your bait will
Kill the bite
That big cat is big enough to be measured in pounds not inches. Quite an outing.
Is this the cape fear river?
Definitely a channel catfish
Luv jigging big perch !!
Is this area tidal
ever so slightly
You catch the biggest white perch. In PA 11 inches is big.
I grew up on 14”-15” ones but yes they were tricky to find. 10”-11” is most abundant in many places.
Looks to be a channel cat
What state are you in ?
What type structure/bottom do ik for fishing for Perch?
Basically flats and ledges
So what was it after all? I think it was a male channel cat.
100 percent channell cat. It being male is the reason for the larger head
Is it a flathead
👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Looks like a big channel. White cats head always looks like it’s too big for is body.
YOU go for octopus but no on SQUID!!!! WHAT UP WITH THAT ???????????????????????????????? IF you filet, bread 'em in Cracker Meal and fry'em those white perch even the small ones, taste great .It's LIKE EATING FISH CANDY
Hey Elias, I’m selling my Hobie PA 12 360 (2021) Let me know if your interested or know someone who is. I listed it on EBAY.
I think white cats only get about 20"
Bro there's no video showing
There is now, may take a few moments I guess. ..
White catfish record 19 pounds 8 ounces that one looked close
Normally the white cats have white bottom jaw whiskers and those looked black. Male channels will have bigger heads like that one. I think that was just a big male channel
It was a snub nose dingus catfish....
