I think the very small difference it's because the MagnetoSpeed is really at the muzzle, but the standard chronograph is not at the same distance. Excellent videos as always. Thanks from France.
I like the Magnetospeed for several reasons:, less bulk, less setup, less errors, not affected by ambient light, etc... But I believe the Magnetospeed does (or can) impact barrel harmonics to a slight degree. You can still do your load development but measuring groups with it strapped on could have an added variable. I can say that it doesnt seem to impact my shot groups on my 1" bull barrel in any noticeable way. And I have tested it a lot! I love the Magnetospeed and do recommend it. Thanks, Curt. Sorry to come to the party 5 years late again🤣
Wow! I have been just waiting for someone to do this comparison! You did that and much more! Thank-You! Once again a VERY informative video! Subscribed.
Appreciate the comparison as I'm currently shopping... Leaning toward the traditional/Caldwell as I imagine the Magneto speed wouldn't work with handguns in most, if not all cases. May also be difficult to attach to some of my Mil-surp rifles.
Thanks for posting the review on the Magnetospeed. I have been looking at them for a while now and will get one after watching your review. Easy set up and easy to use wins every time for me. Just a shame they are $300 + here in Australia. Subscribed
That Caldwell is matching that Magnetospeed exactly. I'm guessing the Caldwell is 9 feet out and according to Caldwells software it should be 5-6 FPS slower and thats exactly what your getting! I paid $80 dollars for the Caldwell and the Magnetospeed is $180. Now you do get instant data on the Caldwell on your cell phone at your bench. Like you said you just can't get it if the Range is hot. Also as you said the rain and snow messes up the Caldwell and not the Magnetospeed. The other point is the Magnetospeed is much easier to set up. The biggest down fall I see to the Magnetospeed other than the price is I have to believe the Magnetospeed changes Barrel harmonics and the Caldwell does not. As always a very well done and informative Video and comparison! I am so happy to see I can very much rely on my Caldwell thanks to YOU!
I've done some testing on my rifle with the magneto because I had the same thought. I do see a slight change in point of impact but my Satterlee tests don't show any change. The nodes and antinodes stay in the same ranges with or without the magneto on. Loads that group will group either way.
Another advantage of optical chronographs such as the Caldwell, is if one is alternating among several rifles. I usually do that to keep my barrels cool.
Very clear and practical review. I will be buying one. Very useful for uncontrolled shootng area like a gravel pit. You don't have to go out in front of the idiots.
Great video but you left one of the biggest drawbacks of a Prochrono and why I ordered a Magnetospeed. I hit the range after work and my ProChroo starts to miss shots as the sun goes down. Same thing can be said early mornings the ProChrono can miss shots early morning. Optimal lighting has to be available for the ProChrono to work. This is no longer an issue with the Magnetospeed.
Excellent job thank you very much ,I was for a while in decision making which one to buy,but you made my decision to Magnetospeed. I watched bought of your videos very good very professional,I will watch more of them. You see I reload calibers 223 270 and 30-06 so I need something very accurate just like that magnetospeed.
Good informative post. I was thinking about getting the V3 after reading alot of reviews some positive and negative, you made my mind up got one on the way. I have subscribed to yer channel. Well done. 👍
You don't have to wait for the range to go cold to check your Caldwell when its connected to you phone/tablet, but weather can be an issue. I can also place my Caldwell a foot away from the target and find out bullet velocity right at the end range/target.
Great video. Only problem I've seen is it throws of my poi and messes wit accuracy a bit. I'll do the satterly ocw test find that awesome group then chronograph to get my data.
It’s like vital signs…we don’t treat by a pts vitals, we treat by the pt. So I’d have to agree with you, although your POI shouldn’t matter, you can get the same data shooting into a bucket. But, yeah, get your mix, your group, prove to yourself it’s effective, and then take the numbers. The only reason I’m getting one of these is to tune my air rifles too, so I’m not wasting air, energy, by ramping up hammer strike and air pressure to a wasteful point. Otherwise…after that’s determined, I only need to set DOPE in my Strelok App.
thanks, i went with the caldwell as i shoot private ranges and can shoot arrows, cans, through it. showing the consistancy between them and only 5fps due to being 10 ft away, it will be perfect for my needs. we shoot golf balls at 300 yds and milk jugs at 1100 yds.
I bought the Caldwell because it was sold at Cabelas and the Mag speed wasn't and I had a large amount of Cabela$ points so I went with the Caldwell as free is tough to beat. Just like always a few months after I bought the Caldwell Cabelas started selling the Mag Speed. Been very happy with my Caldwell
Thanks for the video. I was hesitating between a real radar, a caldwell or something else to calculate real speed out of my 19’ barrel vs ammo manufacturers data (hunting, 30.06 & 308). I’ll take this one, small, easy.
hmmm, you referred to the "app" pointing to the Magnetospeed... please elaborate... I was not aware that there is app that pairs with the head unit also.
😊great video, thanks. Just bought MagnetoSpeed after having Caldwell unit. Way too many errors with Caldwell, even intense sunlight even with shades on will cause error. When your in load development stage, your speed is vital and getting error messages slows the process. Yet to use MagnetoSpeed so your how to video was very timely.
Have you ever tested the difference in speed of the barrel temperature dropping between having the bolt open or closed on a semi auto rifle? This is something I might test sometime if it ever cools down in Indiana.
There is only one problem about the MagnetoSpeed to me. I do a lot of pistol shooting and reloading for them. You can't really use it on semiauto pistols. But I have lots of time and room for equibment so I choose the Caldwell. It's just my oppinion :)
Sadly here in Oz price gouging is a way of life..... I have the Caldwell kit same as you, the Magnetospeed was at least double the price unfortunately...... But I still enjoy the Caldwell. I use Caldwell's iphone app to store the data and move it to the desktop for processing in a spreadsheet. The range I use for testing is shared with people who basically couldn't care less and will stop and make safe at any time if someone needs to move forward, great bunch of blokes and this privilege has never been abused. We try and allow for range closure every 15 minutes or so during practice so shooters can go and visually check/measure their groups. Not set in concrete, and some days no closures for an hour or more. Everybody knows one another, good mates and we generally know prior to commencement what the day will involve. Cheers Kurt, have a great day 🇦🇺 🍺🍺
I've heard the Magneto can change the point of impact, so if you're using it for more than just ballistic speed then it may cause problems. Why can't the Caldwell be used at closer range, such as literally several inches from the barrel. I don't understand why Caldwell insist it must be 10 to 15 feet away?
Excellent video. Answered most all my questions, pretty much sold on the Sporter. You talked about the effects of rain, but what about bright sunlight or overcast, will it cause errors like the Caldwell,??
I am very impressed with how accurate that inexpensive Caldwell is! It kept right up with that MagnetoSpeed! I just ordered the Caldwell today for $79 + tax. The magnetoSpeed is $100 more.
A warmer CASE is directly related to the powder you choose as well.. What powder are you using or is that factory AMMO ? Ohh ya BTW - my POI change between NO MAGNETO and installed is about 3" shift elevation
Trying to decide how much barrel needs to be available between hand gurard and break to be able to install. This is important for those of us with an SBR or AR Pistol. Can you give me an idea how much clear space I have to have behind the break?
Good videos on the sporter. I just ordered one from Midway USA for $168.00 shipped. I have been kicking around getting a chrony for 3-4 years now for load development, but I couldn’t justify the canopy type optical units for the range I shoot at (the unit out front on a hot line) because of what you mentioned, and the pistol range only allows 1-2 shooters at a time, and that gets to be a hassle. I know this wont work with semi autos, so no loss with it at my range. I would like to see or maybe make a mount for a pistol with no rail (1911’s). Thanx for the info and your personal observations. 🔫
Great video. This answered the one big question I had in how it compares. Both have their uses. If your using a handgun without a rail or a short barrel revolver then your older one is your only choice. Thanks for posting now when I go out and purchase one I know I won’t be wasting my money.
The problem with the magnetospeed is it has to be close to the bullet flight. I have a heavy barrel 1.25 no taper and it doesn't read. Just error after error.
Works fine on a couple different rigs of mine with barrels measuring just over an inch at the muzzle. A blank measuring 1.250” at the muzzle won’t be an issue for very many folks. If you reload for precision rifles, and do a lot of it, you likely already own both a Magnetospeed and a conventional chronograph. Super data nerds will have a LabRadar in the mix as well!
Thanks for the comparison! Reading about Magneto customer service on Amazon reviews not very inspiring. Looking to purchase Sporter model, anybody here have any problems with after sale problems? Thank you in advance.
I wouldn't set my iPad that close to the rifle. Just thinking about a friend who opened the door on his truck, rolled the window, and used the window frame as a rest to shoot a deer. The percussion or recoil from the rifle broke the glass on the mirror on his door.
G’day legend, I’m thinking about buying a Magneto Speed Sporter for my nephew who’s just bought himself a Bergara Ridge 6.5 Creedmore for Deer and Hog hunting and to do some informal long range target shooting ( I’ll be using your awesome Ballistics Advanced Edition app to help him get out to 1200 Yards ) Five years after this review what are your thoughts on this Chronograph? Has it withstood the test of time and worked as it did from day one ? Would you still recommend it to shooters ? Cheers from Australia 🍻
I was wondering about the accuracy of my Chrony. Oh, if you add in the cost of a good tripod and the cost of the two is about the same. I am not sure if the magneto speed would work with a can?
I usually shoot 3 rifles so the barrels stay cool...one shot, switch rifle#1, one shot, shoot rifle#2, one shot, shoot rifle#3, rinse and repeat. That is the only disadvantage of the MagnetoSpeed I can think of
The caldwell chronograph seems much more useful than the magneto system. I wonder how you get readings from a bow or crossbow? Does it work with airsoft and paintball guns? How about darts from a blowgun? Or anything that isn't a gun barrel? How does it work on your semiauto pistol?
It’s more useful because you can measure the speed of toys? The intended purpose of this thing is for a reloader to obtain data points so to create precision ammunition for the rifle it’s shot from. Each rifle is built with slight differences in tolerances and measurements, therefor each rifle will have a load that performs better than the rest. The Magnetospeed offers a more reliable way to obtain this data. A hand loader, reloading for a semi-automatic handgun doesn’t really have to know these measurements to produce quality loads. Quantity is usually the motivation for a semiautomatic pistol guy, not precision.
It's less useful and limited to the one gun it is on. So you believe bows and crossbows are toys? The chronograph is usable on a wide variety of weapons.
Hi sir, I know this is an older video but I was wondering if you would recommend the Caldwell for load development? I have the Caldwell already but people say it’s junk and not good enough for load development. I feel like mine is accurate and your video seems to show that also. I have my own range so I don’t have to worry about waiting to take it down. Just trying to decide if I need to spend more money to get a magnetospeed.
Where did you get the attachment that went into your tablet to download your data? I like that feature. I will you could plug it directly into your phone or tablet like you can with the Caldwell.
@@vaughnprecision thinking of this and the Labradar, sometimes putting out my prochrono is a pain. I would think that checking speeds and groups at the same time would be better? no? maybe I don't shoot enough to not do that....
@@vaughnprecision thanks for the responses, an outfitter friend of mine planted a bug about the 243AI and your videos were the first thing that popped up. I was a bid nervous too when you popped that first factory load in your AI. though I found your page late, i am glad to see you back at it
Yes, I was able to use one that another shooter brought to the range. I was impressed by it for sure. The only complaint is the cost. It's on the high side. But it really gives you some great accurate data. I'd like to buy one, test it and post a video on it, but it's out of my reach right now, I need to invest in some other tools I need first. Maybe I'll email them and see if they would let me have a discount in return for video reviews.
Wow your range doesn't have individual areas, if your doing chronograph or if i was just checking a load or new setup I would go to one of the individual shooting bays. Here we have the Butterfield Shooting Range that has many options where you can choose individual bay or group range.
How high up are you putting the bullets through the window on the Caldwell? I usually put them about 4 inches up from the unit. You were getting nice consistent readings. I almost bought the MS but went Caldwell. Now I'm wishing...
I recently heard that the sporter model plastic clamp can be thrown away and replaced with the Aluminum version that was originally put on the V1 & V2 models... It's supposed to resolve the slipping problem (having to retighten after every 2-3 shots)... Do you happen to know if that's correct or have you made that change to your sporter? I'm going to be investing in one of the magnetospeeds, but I don't really need anything more than the sporter version... However, I don't want to have to deal with the bayonet sliding all over the place.Any help is greatly appreciated.
SageRat Shooter unfortunately I'm not aware of that. I would think aluminum would scratch a painted or blued barrel to. However, if that's an option it would be nice.!
Thanks! Yes, my groups will shift a bit (open up actually) when I have this mounted. Its not horrible but you can't have this mounted when sighting in. I guess I should have said that as well. I've asked Magnetospeed to sent me the V3 version for testing, but I haven't heard anything back. There are a few small but nice variations on that one. If I get my hands one one, I'll do a comparison and show the POI shift as well.
Thanks for the video,I just bought one after watching your review mate, from Australia 🇦🇺
The info on the pressure increase, by leaving subsequent rounds in the hot chamber, was extremely useful! Thanks!
I think the very small difference it's because the MagnetoSpeed is really at the muzzle, but the standard chronograph is not at the same distance. Excellent videos as always. Thanks from France.
Leaving a round in a hot chamber is something I haven't really considered but makes total sense. Thanks for the info!
Thank you for sharing. Your presentation was a major factor in my decision to acquire a MagnetoSpeed Sporter.

No worries man.!
I got the Caldwell after watching this. Thank you for making this video
When people finally catch on your channel is going to explode. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! I hope one day it does grow, though it sure seems to be slow. That's ok though, its a work in progress.
Vaughn Precision definitely in my top five favorite channels.
Very well done set of videos and very informative. Thank you for taking the time to make these!
Wow! I have been just waiting for someone to do this comparison! You did that and much more! Thank-You! Once again a VERY informative video! Subscribed.
Sir Maxwell glad it helped you out.! Thanks for the sub..!
Same here. Great comparison & good information. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much. Very well explained. And learned something new today about the barrer when is hot. How it changed the speed .
Appreciate the comparison as I'm currently shopping... Leaning toward the traditional/Caldwell as I imagine the Magneto speed wouldn't work with handguns in most, if not all cases. May also be difficult to attach to some of my Mil-surp rifles.
You also can't sight in with the magneto speed attached. It changes the trajectory because it's hanging on the barrel.
I've seen enough.... I'm getting one! Great video!!!
Vaughn Precision your video sold me on this chrono. I was debating one anyway but your review is solid.
Great videos and very interesting and informative well presented thanks for posting then 👍👍

@Alan J Now the Gooberment is back in price will go up again..
Both are accurate. One is at the muzzle, one is 10' beyond the muzzle. If the one out front was faster, then there would be a problem :)

Great content man...Thanks you Sir!
They are both great
Thanks for the video. I was hesitating between a real radar, a caldwell or something else to calculate real speed out of my 19’ barrel vs ammo manufacturers data (hunting, 30.06 & 308). I’ll take this one, small, easy.
I like the labdar once I got it set up and learned how to use it bought a good aftermarket sight I have had great results
hmmm, you referred to the "app" pointing to the Magnetospeed... please elaborate... I was not aware that there is app that pairs with the head unit also.
😊great video, thanks. Just bought MagnetoSpeed after having Caldwell unit. Way too many errors with Caldwell, even intense sunlight even with shades on will cause error. Great video and great information about the product , going to get one urgent Best regards
Have you ever tested the difference in speed of the barrel temperature dropping between having the bolt open or closed on a semi auto rifle? This is something I might test sometime if it ever cools down in Indiana.
You have the cable hooked up for the app where are you walking out to check your numbers. But you are right about the initial setup and takedown time
Cool glasses. Thanks for the info
Very close tally between the two which goes to prove that the Digital Prochrony may well be reliable enough for use in applications for LR shooting.
Very informative video plus side of magneto speed seems to make the additional cost reasonable
There is only one problem about the MagnetoSpeed to me. I do a lot of pistol shooting and reloading for them. You can't really use it on semiauto pistols. But I have lots of time and room for equibment so I choose the Caldwell. It's just my oppinion :)
Oh Damm!
I’m going to have to get both.
Simple solution, buy a suppressor. Boom! Too easy!
I have a SilencerCo Omega 9k that I mount on a G17 to get my data.

Great review. I didn't even know there was MagnetoSpeed. 👍
If you want to speed up the cooling of your barrel, a battery powered air mattress pump with a piece of flex clear tubing will do it.
I've heard the Magneto can change the point of impact, so if you're using it for more than just ballistic speed then it may cause problems. Why can't the Caldwell be used at closer range, such as literally several inches from the barrel. The muzzle blast interferes with the sensors
Excellent video. Answered most all my questions, pretty much sold on the Sporter. You talked about the effects of rain, but what about bright sunlight or overcast, will it cause errors like the Caldwell,??
No, it’s not affected by either of those
Yeah but how do they work with 12ga magnum slug loads???
Thanks good video great info
If you like rain move to western WA magneto will not work on reciprocating barrel i have :(
I live in western Washington
Good safety first tip thank you for that sir!
I am very impressed with how accurate that inexpensive Caldwell is! It kept right up with that MagnetoSpeed! I just ordered the Caldwell today for $79 + tax. The magnetoSpeed is $100 more.

Thank goodness I have my own land to do all of this kind of stuff on.
Great Work Thank You
The only thing I don't like about magneto speed is the point of impact drastically changes on my rifle. Really messes with barrel harmonics.
I ordered one of these last night. I am sick and tired of my Pro Chorno.
Excellent, thank you.
Can the magnetospeed be used with a silencer on the barrel?

Can you tell me what round you are putting down range
I was wondering about the accuracy of my Chrony. Oh, if you add in the cost of a good tripod and the cost of the two is about the same. I am not sure if the magneto speed would work with a can?
I’ve never tried it with a can before, but if memory serves me right Johnnys Reloading bench has done it. Might want to check out his channel and see
Did you buy the power chord where you attached the display to your ipad from an electronic store?
Littlerock Tavern for lunch?
Hahaha.! Drive past it all the time but never have stopped there.
Does the use of indoor shooting add to the benefit ??
Have you done any chrono test on the 243 win say 100 grain pills
I watched your whole video to actually see the results, not a dozen mentions how more easier one is to use then the other.
I usually shoot 3 rifles so the barrels stay cool...one shot, switch rifle#1, one shot, shoot rifle#2, one shot, shoot rifle#3, rinse and repeat.

They are just fine, I use mine all the time for that
@@vaughnprecision thanks for the reply.
Where did you get the attachment that went into your tablet to download your data? I like that feature. I will you could plug it directly into your phone or tablet like you can with the Caldwell.
Sthomas 2578 I think I ordered it from Amazon, or you can go directly to them or possibly MidwayUSA
I'd also add in the fact you will need a tripod to add to your backpack. I love my V3 magneetospeed can't go wrong with either one they offer.
BUt doesn't the magnetospeed mess up barrel harmincs and hence bullet placement?
rifleshooter.com/2018/03/does-the-magnetospeed-v3-chronograph-change-group-size-and-point-of-impact/
do you see any point of impact change between having the magneto speed on and off of the barrel?
Absolutely, if your shooting for groups don’t use the magneto.! It will cause a POI shift
@@vaughnprecision thinking of this and the Labradar, sometimes putting out my prochrono is a pain. I would think that checking speeds and groups at the same time would be better? no? maybe I don't shoot enough to not do that....
@@mikecrotts3943 I would be nice to do both at the same time
@@vaughnprecision thanks for the responses, an outfitter friend of mine planted a bug about the 243AI and your videos were the first thing that popped up. I was a bid nervous too when you popped that first factory load in your AI. though I found your page late, i am glad to see you back at it
do you think this could work on and survive a cannon shot ,from badass cannons
I think it would survive but I don’t know if it would work.
Have you had a chance to check out the labradar chronograph?
Yes, I was able to use one that another shooter brought to the range. I was impressed by it for sure. The only complaint is the cost. It's on the high side. But it really gives you some great accurate data. I'd like to buy one, test it and post a video on it, but it's out of my reach right now, I need to invest in some other tools I need first. Maybe I'll email them and see if they would let me have a discount in return for video reviews.
First time on your channel Great video What caliber did you use in video
Good info thank you!
Read somewhere that bullet speed drops in avg 1ft/sec per feet of travel... Might just be the case watching this.
nice rig, can the magneto speed work on a handgun
Does the continual muzzle blast have any effect on the part of the unit that extends under the muzzle?
No. Minor discoloration at most that wipes off.
Shaner rc I put them about 4 to 6 inches up. That seems to be the best for no errors.
Great job on all your videos! Are you getting any change in POI when it is attached?
Thanks a bunch!
