So agree with you about meat substitutes. Everyone comes into being vegan from their own unique place and it’s important to have easy and familiar options. Not to mention - that even if you prefer whole plant based foods in general - you might still want to occasionally have something just for fun. It’s all good in my opinion... as long as it’s all vegan. 👍🏼
I love the Gardein, I've had all three and they are all delicious but those Gardein on a sub roll with sauce and cashew parmesan are amazing. A slice of Daiya provolone and a quick heat under the broiler makes a fantastic grinder.
Great message Chris! BTW, you look super healthy & not a day over 30... Even if we try to mostly stick to a whole foods rawish vegan diet, we should all support these fun vegan foods! These are the make or break deals for people becoming new vegans! I can't believe they finally have vegan cheese puffs & cheezits (Earth Balance) and sharp cheese (Miyoko's) -- I never thought I'd see the day. I guess the real dream is having the restaurants serve this too...
Awesome! Jon and Chris together! So funny- fresh out of the air fryer stuck, it in your mouth and said "hot"🤣 Then Jon did the same thing... still hot😂. Also the talk at the end. I so agree with all of that. Removing the excuses. Also now I'm hungry. 😉🌱💚
i greatly appreciate videos like this. they make the transition to vegan easier and prevent negative associations to certain foods by letting one know what products are good and which to avoid. thank you
Hi, Guys! I totally agree with John, Gardein is the better!! Makes sense Trader Joe's and Aldi would almost be the same, if not the same, because the companies are owned by brothers. So enjoy you two!!
I tried Field Roast sausages before and absolutely hated them! But my daughter talked me into the Gardein meatballs so I took one and I really liked them! So far they are the best tasting vegan meat substitute I have found! I am really looking forward to beyond sausage although I did not like the burger! Oh and it is really nice seeing John again! I miss him on the videos! Thanks
You guys being long time vegans helps to prove to people that veganism is perfectly ok. Glad you have lots of choices, isn't it thrilling that vegan is going mainstream. Good point about why meat substitutions are needed for transitioning to veganism. I also like that the words meat, cheese, milk etc. are being co-opted by vegans, for the animals.
Most people don't go Vegan because hamburgers taste bad. People are Vegan because of health, the animals, the environment, and more; so these mock products are made because we miss the taste of the foods we grew up with. 😁👍
Would you ever consider turning on community contributions on your videos (so that people can add closed captions/subtitles)? The autogenerated captions on a lot of your videos are usually not very accurate (can't pick up words like "Aldi's" for instance). Just something to consider for viewers who are deaf/hard of hearing/etc. Anyway, love your videos, they make learning about new vegan foods easy and fun 🍉
I was never a fan of meatballs before I was vegan, only vegan meatballs I've tried is the gardein so far and my husband LOVES them. So I'm definitely gonna have to try to get him the aldi brand, especially if it's cheaper 😂 Love these videos!!
Milk caused me to throw up at some point of the first years of my life, so I've been completely avoiding it and mayo (because of the similar color and slimey texture). Being vegan allowed me to try the vegan versions of those, and now I do consume them. It was interesting to see how a product would change with the addition of them.
I think Trader Joe’s has the best meatballs. I was eating them almost every day before I moved and no longer have a Trader Joe’s nearby. Love you guys!
We make Gardein meatball soup all the time. They're the only ones that hold up to soaking in liquid without dissolving. Without air frying, TJs meatballs just turn into wet bread if they soak in soup or sauce.
My mom fools her husband with the gardein meatballs 🙈 he has no clue. They're amazing. Our aldi doesnt have any of the vegan food 😓 so haven't had those.
Really enjoyed the convo after the review, a good, honest, vegan heart-to-heart. I thank the god I don't believe in every day that commercial analogue products exist because they are the gateway drug to the vegan life for many, many people. Any way that gets people to our side is a benefit. TFP : )
I can’t wait to try these! So far everything I have tried from Gardein is delicious 😋 these will go perfectly in a meatball sub or spaghetti! I love all your videos but taste test videos are my favorite.
There's a strong link between food and culture. Meat alternatives, like burgers, meatballs, and hamburger crumbles let us use our old favorite recipes. Most of my diet is whole and plant based now, but things like this serve as an occasional treat.
Great video! Love these taste tests. I don’t feel like I have to justify eating a fake meat/cheese/etc. Why? Why not! It’s wonderful in all aspects. Whether it’s just options or helps people transition.
The Gardein broken apart is the best sausage substitute in soups, chili, stir fries. I love the taste of it in a sub roll with marinara sauce, even non-vegan friends love it. Will have to try the others, but not sure it can beat the Gardein flavor category for us :) however for a recipe that it needs the meatball to be more mild, or if someone doesn't like fennel, the others would be possibly the better choice. Thanks for the comparison!
I do really like the TJ meatballs, I buy them regularly. But one minor complaint I have is their shape is inconsistent, sometimes they look a little flat. Some bags I buy they are more like meatdiscs instead of meatballs.
I don't have an Aldi near me, but, I have had both Gardein and the Trader Joe's and I like TJ's the best. I always cut the Gardein one in half and it's a bit strong, but still good. As for the substitutes. I've been vegan for almost a year now and these sorts of products made it super easy for me to do so. I love that these things exist. I don't understand why it annoys non vegans so much that we have these products.
Gardein ... hands down!! 🍝 It has the best texture & flavor .. and size. But hey, bigger is better .. 😉 Although, I typically make my own meatballs using the Beyond Burger ‘meat’ It turns out great. Have you guys tried the Beyond Sausage yet? It’s pretty good ... 😋
I know what you guys mean about comforting childhood foods! Last night we tried Smart Bacon for the first time and made BLTs. It made me feel just like a kid again! And by the way, it tasted EXACTLY like bacon. Also, love these review videos, guys.
Great point guys, the fake meats for me was a transition to more whole foods. Also, it's a good way to introduce vegan options to ppl who are not vegan...options that look like foods they eat but without doing harm. I get the other side too though, for instance vegan hot dogs look and taste so true to what I remember traditional hot dogs tasting like that it actually is unappealing to me. LOL
Such a great outlook! My favorite thing is meeting newer vegans (especially dude vegans!!!) and listening to their discoveries and feelings about going vegan! It's never been a better time. It's seriously crazy to see things evolved over 10 years -- excited for the next 10!
Gardein always makes great stuff. I love everything of theirs I've tried. Their burgers are my favorite veggie burgers. I've been vegan for 7 years now and when I first went vegan I could only find original soymilk in my town. Now there are so many more options and I can find everything I could want.
I’m super grateful for vegan substitutes especially vegan meatballs. My 8 year old sons favorite food are meatballs. So I buy the Trader joe meatless meat balls. It definitely helps in our transition to becoming vegan. Thank you for your videos I really enjoy them😊
Hi guys, thanks for the video. Sure, I have had lots of thoughts about replacing meat, dairy and egg based dishes and products with plant based products meant to mimic them. There is not only one way only for a person to feel about it. Many of us certainly enjoyed the hell out of burgers, meatballs, deli meats, lasagna, burritos, quesadillas, fried chicken, bbq, sweet and sour shrimp, milkshakes, pastries, etc. That is exactly why the plant based products came about, people love this stuff. It doesn't matter that it is now made of plants, except how you feel about it. To some, it is too close to the real thing, but that is a sensibility and has nothing to do with veganism, which seeks to minimize harm to animals and planet. But this is all comfort food and highly processed, just the same as many of the foods we ate before becoming vegan. We know so much more now how to enjoy a whole food plant based diet for all its endless possibilities and health benefits. To me, animal products are only one thing. Plants represent so much variety and nutrition and flavor we will be experimenting and inventing new food from them forever.
The Aldi ones are my favorite! I wish they'd bring them back to my store. Gardein just has too much fennel in it to my liking =(. Never had Trader Joes.
Australia is very behind in terms of meat replacements! We do have speciality stores that sell them but our supermarkets by and large do not have much in terms of meat replacements, what we do have isn't stuff you wanna eat all the time like vegan sausages... HELL we still only have three of the Vegan Quorn products while they are still selling the non-vegan quorn products. Our Aldi's still only have vegan burger pattirs and vegan sausages and that is it. Lol I totally agree with not needing to change the names of vegan meat replacements! Like why is that such an issue for people? Are they worried that they might buy them by mistake and actually like them??
I know that you live somewhere in Syracuse area, and are always getting these awesome meatless Aldi brand stuff. I've been to two different Aldi near me on the east side of Syracuse and can basically only ever find the meatless chicken patties. Which Aldi do you go to?!?! I'm desperate!!!
I LOVE the Aldi meatballs. I can eat them completely plain. Aldi hasn’t had them in either of the stores near me for a while but I will have to make a drive to Trader Joe’s to get theirs.
I never cared for meat I have always been fascinated by spices and herbs and what you can do with those! Create magic! 😂So didn't need the meat substitutes myself and I just loved veggies the freedom to create was so much more with them, plus seven years ago didn't have many meat looking stuff out there anyway, but I am finally getting my parents on board eating similar to myself for there depleting health cause I love my parents and want there last year's not packed with pains that can be helped to be far less worse through better eating. So educating and supporting them on how to make your own meat looking stuff. I myself have never made them either, but I am familiar with some of the new ingredients to her so yeah we're making vegan steak later this week together. Yay mom! She's bringing dad along too. He's not picky he will eat anything as long as he don't have to make it. Lol I don't live with them, but I am always around and a call away.✌💚💚💚
If you have an IKEA anywhere near you they now have vegan meatballs too. You guys should check out those as well if you can. Chris, maybe you could visit an IKEA and go to the cafe, as well as do a big vegan grocery haul 👍😊
I'm with you.... I like the Trader Joes the best! I love Gardein products but not a fan of the seasoning in their meatballs. Don't like fennel so I don't purchase them.
I’m grateful for fake meats. I haven’t gone fully vegan but did go pescatarian last year though I try to eat a vegan diet most days. The hubby still eats meat. I don’t like cooking. The idea of making my own meat alternatives sounds like more kitchen work than I care to be involved in. Having ready made “meats” that he’ll eat too makes my life so much easier. So far he hasn’t complained.
I've always been uncomfortable about eating meat, even as a child. When I had meatballs or a hamburger I used to pretend they were not meat. When I have vegan versions of those foods now I can fully enjoy them.
We like the Aldi Classic better than the Italian ones. They rarely have them at our store so we end up buying the whole box when we find them 😂😂 We call them "Veggie Balls" in our house.
Almost everything I've seen does not have MSG in it. Actually, I can't think of any of the newer products (last 5 or so years) that has MSG in them off the top of my head. Yeast extract is natural and MSG is synthesized. They aren't the same thing. But it has glutamate which you're probably sensitive to. Does it happen even when you consume small quantities?
Honestly, I don't generally buy the meat substitutes, because some of it is too realistic for me to enjoy it. I haven't eaten meat for 40 years, but the thought of eating it still makes me cringe. I love these taste test videos and it's awesome that your able to get Jon in on these
I love Gardein meatballs, but I have to be careful. I will devour a whole bag if I'm not careful!
Same ^_^
Oh yeah Gardein buddies!!!
Omg, “why don’t we get a plate of spaghetti and Lady & the Tramp this shit!” I’m dying!
I love the Gardein, I've had all three and they are all delicious but those Gardein on a sub roll with sauce and cashew parmesan are amazing. A slice of Daiya provolone and a quick heat under the broiler makes a fantastic grinder.
JustaBabsy totally making this. 😍👌

You guys are WONDERFUL! Please keep sharing 😃
i greatly appreciate videos like this. they make the transition to vegan easier and prevent negative associations to certain foods by letting one know what products are good and which to avoid. thank you
Vegans should eat anything they want that doesn't come from an animal.
NoExitLoveNow exactly what I’ve been saying for a better part of my life.
I always find it comical when someone makes it a point to say vegans can be unhealthy and eat tons of processed food...as they eat a Big Mac.
I love Gardein meatballs and I love the Vegan Zombie!
:)
Hi, Guys! I totally agree with John, Gardein is the better!! Makes sense Trader Joe's and Aldi would almost be the same, if not the same, because the companies are owned by brothers. So enjoy you two!!
"It's got Meth in it!" 🤣🤣🤣
I just got sugar from Aldi. It said right on the package no bone chare.
Yep, I like that they label it like that. :)
You guys are such a good team. I wish you were still collaborating.
I just found the Gardien here in Australia. To me it has the most Italian tasting. Reminds me of my mum's Staten Island Sauce with Italian sausage.
Tom Petty okay, thanks!

“Why are vegans trying to make products that resemble meat?” ... Why are meat eaters trying to make their food look not like dead animals?
Excellent rebuttal!
🙌🏼😃
Lol they make their meat taste like plants by adding herbs!!
Jason Rowe AMEN ✌
AMEN ✌
I didn't know the Aldi ones were still available. Good to know! I sure haven't seen them at my store, though. 8-\
My mom fools her husband with the gardein meatballs 🙈 he has no clue. They're amazing. Our aldi doesnt have any of the vegan food 😓 so haven't had those.
I have fooled my husband with Gardien meatballs. He has no clue. Lol
Awesome video as always. I love the Gardein meatballs for spaghetti. Can you guys do a taste test on Gardein's skillet meals?
Love watching you guys. You and John are the coolest vegans
I figured out how my husband I can afford those gardine products we'll get everything else at aldi and the gardien at Wal-Mart or Target.
Really enjoyed the convo after the review, a good, honest, vegan heart-to-heart. I thank the god I don't believe in every day that commercial analogue products exist because they are the gateway drug to the vegan life for many, many people. Any way that gets people to our side is a benefit. TFP : )
Wait there’s two of them ??? Why did I think they were the same person like it was before he grew the beard
I can’t wait to try these! So far everything I have tried from Gardein is delicious 😋 these will go perfectly in a meatball sub or spaghetti! I love all your videos but taste test videos are my favorite.

Gardeins meatballs plus field roast creamy cheese on a whole wheat bun is delicious!! And was my first vegan meal a year ago.

Love these videos!! I only have Gardein available to me but I think the seasonings are a bit much. I make bean balls instead :)
Gardein meatless meatballs are top notch but have you tried the Nate's brand? They got a regular and an Italian zest flavor.
I have not. I'll have to find them.
I can concur - Nate's was my favorite but I can no longer find them locally. Northeast Ohio
Do these items have processed ingredients? Would love to see how you would make those kinds of foods with whole food ingredients.
I haven’t able to find the Aldi ones yet. I need to look in more locations.
A lot of the vegan products Aldi was carrying were just promotional products to see how they would sell.
I love the style contrast between these two.
Love that Tamerlaine hoodie!!!
I put the gardein in Dale's seasoning (only available in the south I think)on low then add bbq sauce. Or pasta sauce if I'm making spaghetti.
Gardein ... hands down!! 🍝 It has the best texture & flavor .. and size. But hey, bigger is better .. 😉 Although, I typically make my own meatballs using the Beyond Burger ‘meat’ It turns out great. Have you guys tried the Beyond Sausage yet? It’s pretty good ... 😋
Yes, I had them at Expo back in March and Veggie Grill. But I haven't been able to find them in stores. The WF I went to didn't have them.
👍

This is awesome about Domino Sugar !!! I didn't know that. I'm so happy to hear this
I MISSED JOHN SO DAMN MUCH!
i would think aldi and trader Joe's would be the same aren't they basically the same company?
The Aldi ones are my favorite! I wish they'd bring them back to my store. Gardein just has too much fennel in it to my liking =(. Never had Trader Joes.
You guys are amazing. Open minded, inclusive veganism is how we get the world to move in the right direction.
I dont like the fennel in the Gardein meatball, as a Swede i think its strange to have fennel in meatballs..but still they are good..
Australia is very behind in terms of meat replacements! My tree yes!!!!!!!
Thank you for the review.
Have you done a taste test on Nate's Meatless Meatballs? I had them several years ago and I remember they were good.
Debbie P Nates meatballs are delicious.
Aldi brought out the vegan products for a limited time. I've heard they plan on bringing them back. Let's hope.
Lmao lady and the tramp this sh** 😂 I missed you guys! Are any of those 3 products Gluten Free as well?
Brooke Patterson no they have wheat I buy them.
Janice Rigsbee ok thank you 🙏
Brooke Patterson I laughed so hard 🤣
Stephanie I’M STILL LAUGHING 😂🤣 I could watch Jon say that on loop lmao!
I make Gardein veggie balls with marinara and salad a couple times a week, healthy and quick for us vegans.
I awfully miss Jon's recipes and cooking!!!
Thanks for the video. I'm gonna try the aldis.
Hey Chris when are you going to have more of those shirts for sale?
Tamara Nazario which ones?
Sorry "If looks could kale"
Love the Aldi the best. Sooooo good!
If you have an IKEA anywhere near you they now have vegan meatballs too. You guys should check out those as well if you can. Chris, maybe you could visit an IKEA and go to the cafe, as well as do a big vegan grocery haul 👍😊
Just had some leftover Gardein Meatless balls and pasta for lunch today lol.
I'm with you.... I like the Trader Joes the best! I love Gardein products but not a fan of the seasoning in their meatballs. Don't like fennel so I don't purchase them.
IKEA now has vegan meatballs. I love the Gardein meatballs. I’ll have to try the Aldi meatballs in sauce. TFS
Are vegan processed foods actually healthy??
Gardein got my vote!!!
This was great and thanks for the critical thinking discussion at the end
Neat meat makes awesome meatball mix and you can turn it into ground beef or meatballs!
Has Rob always had plugs? Either way they look cool
Jon? Yes he has had them for quite a while. 20 years or so.
The Vegan Zombie Oh no I'm terrible with names but thanks for answering 👍
I love me some Gardein😍
I've always been uncomfortable about eating meat, even as a child. When I had meatballs or a hamburger I used to pretend they were not meat. When I have vegan versions of those foods now
I can fully enjoy them.
The old chemistry is gone. Jon seems like a different guy.
Jon is my spirit animal "if there's food in front of me, I have to eat it" xD
Amy's are good too!
Gardein is the best in my book for sure. 😍
"SO DUMB" Awesome LOL
We like the Aldi Classic better than the Italian ones. They rarely have them at our store so we end up buying the whole box when we find them 😂😂 We call them "Veggie Balls" in our house.
I miss Yon
+amdg+ TJ and Aldis are the same company, they're brothers from Germany +pax Christi!+
show us the cat that's cleaning up.
Please just show us the cat.
Very beginning of video behind us on table. :)
The Aldi vegan brands are so sparsely found in their stores it drives me crazy.
Just about all those vegan "meats" have msg (aka yeast extract and autolyzed yeast). It gives me bad headaches and migraines.
That's interesting! Yes even in small amounts yeast extract gives me a headache. Thanks for your reply.
Honestly, I don't generally buy the meat substitutes, because some of it is too realistic for me to enjoy it. I haven't eaten meat for 40 years, but the thought of eating it still makes me cringe. The thing is, people have developed recipes over hundreds of years, using actual meat, so if you have something that easily substitutes for it one-for-one in a recipe, it removes some of the guesswork and stress from cooking vegan. If that encourages people to go vegan, that's a win, but I'll probably stick to marinated tofu and similar things to replace meat in recipes.
