You could skip the smoke cloud by loading it one handful less, and lighting something on the top. With enough airflow, the top flame should burn hot enough to basically afterburn the smoke and have the whole fire burn clean. Then just progressively feed more leaves

Try adding fireclay to your next barrel, and some "black iron" pipe around the base with a gas valve a screen for the top. You barrel will last longer, you wont have any ground fires, you can increase or feather the air flow and get to appropriate temperature faster. I did that bit myself, smokeout the whole countryside when I first started screwing about I used my shop vac on the leaf blower side. now my barrel dosent rust since it is insulated and it lasts longer.
