- The Belle Stars World Domination. 1986 single charting at #257 in the UK (#186 on the compressed chart) in May 1986. Official music video HQ 80s 80's British girl bands how are your plans going for. ohnoitisnathan
This song should have achieved world domination. Feels like a song from that time frame that I remember being a huge hit.
Heard this song for the first time ever today on Sirius XM's "First Wave" channel. Can't believe this was never a hit! Super catchy song.
Just heard it on Saturday Night Safety Dance :)
It was an underground hit, released when new wave alternative was still a thing.
Top tune, this band should have had much more sucess than they did, very underrated!
The Waitresses, most likely. They sound exactly the same as The Belle Stars. Even Book of Love sound quite close too but less polished IMO.
This is more like Bananarama at the time. But their prior sound was nothing like this.
It’s strange to see just three of the original Stars present in a music video.
Love the Shep Pettibone mix of this track!
This song was one of my favorites because of its issue with the world outside and to this day it still has meaning...truly a terrifying aspect and a sign to a falling and fragile world...it's always been here and will never leave us especially in a world that is one minded,go back to Two Tribes from Frankie goes to Hollywood.Theres always a hidden meaning to one thing.
This is even better when you remember it came out before the Berlin Wall came down ✌️
Wished I could find the full lyrics
Miranda looks so unhappy
Indeed. She was a (talented) saxophone player after all...
This song/video is to music what Valley of the Dolls is to movies. I was on the dance floor at a club called Heaven (now called South Beach) in Houston the first time I heard this song/saw this video. Loved it then, love it now! Thank you very much for posting this. (:
I remember Heaven!
Wish they had added this to their greatest hits albums, even though it's only 4 of the original lineup. Used to see this video in heavy rotation back in 86.
...Actually only 3 originals. Miranda, Sarah Jane and Lesley... the girl singing by herself was not.
Thank goodness for radio & club play in New Orleans otherwise would have totally missed this great dance classic. Also, thank you for posting the 7" single, as the 12" was and still is shite. Cheers, DAVEDJ
I used hear this on Power 106 in Southern California. It went to #2 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs. "I don't mind working hard, but not too hard". I love that lyric.
In retrospect... probably one of the most terrifying and most prophetic songs ever recorded
Right up there with Rainbow's "Can't Happen Here"
This song is on a C.D. I have it. Try to find ' hit that perfect beat volume 2 '. The extended version (5.41) is on it although its on long mix with no gaps between songs. Theres 10 tracks on it. Its a proper release..not a mad up C.D.
The one mixed in with "You Spin Me Round" by Dead Or Alive, right? Had a copy of that song from it a couple decades ago.
My god i use to have those very blonde curly extensions. They bounced as you walked lol
I remember buying this on 12" ...played it non-stop.
Another ohnoitisnathan nugget of brilliance. I bought this at the time! I guess they thought it worked for Amazulu to slim down to a three piece. Not on any "best of" sadly, not even the latest 2019 release.
Yes, unfortunately, the 7" version has never been released on CD or digitally, it appears. The 12" version has made its way onto two various artists CDs though (check discogs). Stupid of them to leave this off the recent compilation - I would have bought it if it was on there. But no. Artists have to be petty and omit songs they don't like, or feel awkward about (because the whole band was not on it? or because it flopped?), from compilations.
I would’ve bought that compilation if this was on it. It’s what ‘completists’ want!
Does anyone have the lyrics?
I saw (part of) this video in the 80's on the show Max Headroom used to have! :-D It's great to finally see the whole vid and hear the whole song!
Along with BowWowWow one of the most underrated bands of the 80s......I danced to this like there was no tomorrow (and listening to the crap today, part of me wishes it had ended there.....JUST a small PART though)
Even whilst being forced to be Bananarama and missing the others, they could still kick ass! It is criminal that they weren't far more successful. As for Bananarama, their second album prior to SAW is their masterpiece; a pop album with a social conscience.
Sarah Jane, Miranda and Leslie. Down to a three piece now. The writing was on the wall though they look fine!
Never heard this mix before. Thanks for the share.
Not heard this for years. Good track.
@itsasoulthing Yeah, it's brilliant. I'd never heard of it until 2006
What happened to the 12" ? Such good memories of that
Beautiful music!
@upfrontbear74, the singer you mention is from the Mint Juleps-Julie Isaac. They all sang, so they did not have just one lead singer.
Very Bananarama sounding !!! Venus was out at the same time, so they wanted to sound like that.
danny6092 Venus was released in June of that year before True Confessions was released in July of that year.
I'm glad I thought to look this up. I haven't heard this song in 30 years!
Does it piss anyone else off that you (like I) DISTINCTLY remember dancing to this song with certain friends but now those very same friends DON'T remember this song: (I can't find a single one who does)
We slid into a different timeline, it's a bad one, sadly 🤕
Have to say that was great, found out it didn't even make the UK top 100, should have been a least top 40
The club mix is bangin' but I prefer this version because I can hear *all* of the background vocals and instruments. This is the version that I heard first way back in the fall of 1986.
The lack of success must have taken its toll
The Belle Stars certainly deserved world domination than some of uk's so called artists I can think of... Amazing song nonetheless :)
What album is this from?
There is no parent album for this one, unfortunately. They may have recorded one, but it was never released.
Is this from an album or is this a track?
Animation in this video was by 'Giblets'. It was done by taking still photos of the band on the day of the video shoot and printing them. Then the photos were photocopied (look up what a photocopier was) and the images were collaged and animated. The frames were then rephotographed onto film on a rostrum camera. It was, as it sounds, a very lengthy process. Today it could be done in a couple of days in Adobe. Giblets were an animation and directing team based in London in the 1980s and 1990s.
I saw this video on Much Music in 86, and bought the EP a year or so later. The B side song isn't half bad, though I'd have to get the record out and check for its title. 🤷♂️
The great Belle Stars song that should have been huge, but instead led to the end of the band. This one still kicks!
4 of them are missing? A single to far I think.
Zelda Fitzgerald the four members left before the single was recorded.
Does anyone know who the black lady singing is, she looks like the lead singer of The Mint Juleps, as they were on the same record label (Stiff) as The Belle Stars, and were around the same time as this song.
Just here because of the Stobotnik fanfiction. Great song to dance on!
Great song. Didn't receive the publicity it needed because of the apocalyptic sense.
Very Bananaramaesque! Good jam!
Due to the identical music style and vocals, the Waitresses seem related or toured together: ua-cam.com/video/5UX2afsTqFI/v-deo.html. Even the music video is the same art style, so...
Hardly identical to the Belles
Haven't heard this song in ages.
meant made up..not mad up
Where are they located?
They're from the UK.

The animation is bit like the animation in "Warriors of the Wasteland" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Clever video!
Love the Belles Stars!! A lot of 80s bands were going
political like Frankie, ABC, and Simply Red. 💙
Missing the 80s!

@@RobMacGillivrayFilms LOL If I'm old enough to remember the Belle Stars then I am old enough to remember photocopiers! 😸
But Thank You for the info on the process. Very cool! I miss painstakingly made experimental music videos like this one!
Who is the girl adding the brilliant gospel vibe?
and is this track on any download format or cd compilation? I recently bought the Turn back the Clock set but it doesn't have this, sadly.
The 12" version is on 2 various artist compilation CD's - www.discogs.com/Various-Maxi-Summer/master/292199 and www.discogs.com/Various-Hit-That-Perfect-Beat-Vol-2/release/950970 . The single/7" version, unfortunately, does not ever appear to have been released digitally.
@@ohnoitisnathan5 I found a 7inch single which now gets a daily spin. Thanks
Where's Jennie?
She was fronting Dance Like a Mother at this point. The Belle Stars had been diminished to a three-piece.
Should have stopped using the Belle Stars name by this time…this is pretty much Bananarama.
a clean copy of the video! yay!
An album of the 4th&Bway era material AND the second 7-piece album (where "The Entertainer" and "80's Romance" came from) both lay in the vaults of ZTT - let's lobby until they see the light of day!
OneCharming Bastard the 3rd album is just a bunch of demos. It wasn't ever finished. World Domination originally had one lead singer. It's the only song fully finished.
Wow, thank you for posting this! Haven't seen it in years and it still sounds awesome! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 A question, are you the same Nathan from Siobhan Fahey's old message board?
Yes, I am!
