  • In this review, suitably attired, we test a brand new 2019 Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI Evo Bluemotion SE Nav and see how practical it is, what it is like to drive and what it is like to own. Be prepared for more in-jokes for fans of 1960s ITC television series (as usual), references to Peter Serafinowicz's seminal Look Around You programme, moments of considerable stress induced by ISOFIX covers which are not secured to the back seats, rage at hard plastic on the tops of the rear doors and a really exhaustive examination of most of the different Golf powerplants available. Nothing untoward, then...
    As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. I have a December 2018 Golf SE Nav 1.5 TSI Bluemotion manual estate. Having graduated from a 2 litre automatic Skoda Octavia, I expected to run into acceleration problems. But no, it pulls away fine, and the manual gearbox is slick and fast. I'm loving it.It makes my 1 hour commute to work a doddle.

      Thanks ever so much for watching, Alastair! Tim's Golf, which had only 700 miles on the clock, was barely run in at all, but it felt really smooth and powerful, just as you describe. I haven't driven a manual Mk 7.5 Golf, but if the six speed gearbox in yours is anything like the one in the Skoda Fabia Estate and Seat Toledo which I have also reviewed on the channel (I wouldn't be surprised as they are both also Volkswagen Group cars), then I am sure that it is lovely. Certainly, I found Tim's car effortless and relaxing, just as you describe. Must be most agreeable to drive to work in the morning!

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting Cheers for a great video, matey. Yes, I thought the manual transmission would ruin the practicality of the ACC, and the vehicle when I got it had 16 miles on the clock, and I've only added 250 miles since, so it's got more to give. But no. Since getting away with a speed awareness course the last time a camera caught me, and the realisation after 56 years that cramming the throttle down and aggressively changing gear as I slammed on the brake, with my teeth grinding, never actually got me anywhere any quicker. The speed limits are sensible.
      The ACC is great even in the manual car. I've yet to find out if it will work down to 0 mph in 1st, but I think it may. I had it down to 20 in 3rd today. But it is _so_ convenient just to stick it in 6th and have total remote control from 40-70mph, which is what the vast majority of my commute is. And even at the roundabouts, where I change down in sequence and brake, the shifter is so positive and crisp. I can't imagine what it will be like when the car is run in.
      The last manual car I drove was a 2004 VW Polo hire car in Ireland, and the clutch biting point was really close to the top of the clutch pedal. I only stalled it once, when slowing down for a junction and momentarily forgetting it wasn't an automatic, but it was a bit of a handful near the end of its working life, and occasionally the revs would drop off precipitously, because it was so difficult to balance the brakes, throttle and clutch.
      Previous to that, the last manual car I drove was a 1995 Ford Mondeo 2l TDI. That was OK, but fast forward to 2019 and it's night and day. OK, just every now and then I have a bit of a tussle getting a full, smooth gear sequence, but then the gears aren't fully meshed in yet. And the clutch is... well, it's almost like it's not there. I'm barely aware sometimes of letting the clutch in. I thought it might be a bit clunky going from auto back to manual, but not a bit of it. It's a very comfortable ride, at least for an hour, and I suspect for a lot longer.

      @@Dragonblaster1, that's a very thorough examination of all the different cars you have owned! Haven't reviewed a Polo yet (although I have driven one of the generation which you had as a hire car, and it was fine), but my Seat is basically a stretched last generation Polo, so I would be interested to see what you thought of that if you wanted to watch some more of the Tweed Jacket Reviews series. Certainly compared with other cars I have driven, the clutch in my Seat is incredibly light, and it's no chore to drive around town whatsoever (although I also like automatics too). I have only driven the current generation Octavia Estate, which was a 1.4 TSI automatic with a similar power output to your Golf and it is really nice, so I imagine your Golf is probably even nicer if it has the newer 1.5 Evo engine!
      I have driven a car with lane keeping assistance before, but I haven't used adaptive cruise control (even though Tim's car had it). I am hoping to use it when I review another car later this year which is fitted with it, that will be scheduled for about July, I think... Sounds as if it is really useful!
      This week, we are filming reviews on, amongst other things, a 1983 Ford Granada Estate, which isn't quite the Mondeo you had, but it is an older Ford with a manual gearbox, and it will be interesting to see if I can drive smoothly, as you say...

      Thank you ever so much indeed! Glad you enjoyed the video, this was one of the earliest reviews on the channel, actually. We have since covered about 50 other cars on Tweed Jacket Reviews! I did have a look at a Mark VI for a client a couple of years ago, but they just tend to still be a little bit expensive, so he bought a Kia instead. Otherwise, I do quite like them. I had a mark 7 as a gtd in 16-17. The build quality was ridiculously solid. Obvs had a few scratchy bits low down but the dash top and glovebox was absolutely made from rock. Could thump it and it gave no hollow sounds anywhere. Had an xe after and that had a dash like a wheelie bin had been wrapped in vinyl to give the impression of luxury. Astra knwas hollowish too. I have a b9 a4 now the golf for me matched it minus a few milled silvery hvac knobs

    It must be my age. The car looks like most other cars today, not unpleasant, just the universal hatchback style. Crammed with all the usual electronic, computerised gismos which rack up the already eye watering price.As car manufacturers have become fewer, but global conglomerates, the cars they produce have become bland, but safe. I remember looking at an old Spyker, beautiful,but the steering wheel had a spike in the centre.Not a doubt that in a crash, don't worry about crumple zones, airbags, or other safety features, you were going tp be impaled on the steering wheel.Ah! Those were the days.A + for the vid. content, info. and humour.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 років тому +2

      Thanks ever so much indeed, Neil! Yes, the Golf is expensive (but it is really nice), and there are lots of complicated electronics in it, which can be superb or frustrating, depending on your point of view. It certainly is a safe car, though, with adaptive cruise control, seven airbags and automatic emergency braking all standard on this particular one. This is one of the reasons why I was keen to review a much older and cheaper car alongside it (hence the Peugeot 207 review), since a lot people cannot afford to drive a new car like this, or simply do not want to. Glad that you enjoyed watching it, though!

      Thanks ever so much indeed! Yes, this one had done around 700 miles when we filmed it, which was incredible, as it is less than most press cars. Tim was most generous to us! I can't blame you for liking old Volkswagens, my parents had a Mk1 Jetta for most of the 1980s, and it began a very long relationship which I have had with the Volkswagen Group (my first car was a 1998 Polo) that continues right up until this day.

      @@PlanetautoUK, that's a lot of Volkswagens! My parents had a facelift Mk1 Polo, then a very late Mk2 Polo, (along with a Volvo 240) and following that we got the 1998 Polo for my sister and I when we learned to drive. I then had a Mk1 Seat Leon, which was really good, although it was the 1.4, so a bit slow... The big bumper MK2 GTI sounds wonderful!

    Great review! Your opinions match the experience we had with a 1.4 GT DSG. A very well designed and sensible car. The shape means rear headroom is excellent. It was nice to drive (ours was one of the trims with multi-link rear suspension) and with a really good ride quality. However, for all its qualities it was unmemorable and build quality was very average. The big problem is that the Seat Leon offers basically the same car but with more style and a lower price, or the Skoda Octavia with much more space and practicality for less. We swallowed the VW hype but in hindsight should have bought an Octavia.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 роки тому

      Yes, I reviewed a Leon ST a few months later, and it was just better in most respects, whilst being cheaper and arguably more stylish. The Golf is a very good car, but it is just a bit expensive for what it is, when you can have much the same experience with more space for much less money. The driving experience is good, but it doesn't particularly stand out apart from being quite smooth.

    The felt lining in the door pockets is a lovely touch. Good supportive seating. Well equipped if expensive.
    The 1.5 turbo engine should handle much better than the heavy diesel alternative with its lighter petrol engine.
    Still a bit boring beside an Astra or a Focus but it cannot be denied that the Golf is a very good quality product.

    Very good video! I do get slightly confused with all the Bluemotion engines, there's a lot of different engines and spec levels which all still offer Bluemotion. Surely there should be one petrol and one diesel that's Bluemotion and the rest something else, or introduce a Bluemotion Plus for frugal skates such as myself. :D

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 роки тому

      Yes, it is confusing with all the different specification levels and engine options, a lot of which seem to overlap... I don't know if the new Mk8 Golf will address this, but we shall see. There are also masses of options, hence why Tim's car has ended up with quite an unusual specification! Still, I do like the combination of this engine and gearbox, which make the car easy to drive and reasonable on fuel. Don't know why there are so many Bluemotion options either...

    I really hate to admit it but every version of this is a very good car. You so want to come up with more interesting choices and at the time the MK5 Astra was, in my opinion anyway, an equal for less money.
    This 1.5 petrol seems very good. When a friend of mine was thinking about a 2019 R Line I believe the 2.0 TDI 150 and the 1.5 TSI 150 were the same price. He went default TDI, I would have been tempted TSI. The small Displacement Ford Ecoboost seems overly complicated. Are there any VW small turbo petrol issues that you are aware of?
    The rear of the Golf is particularly good in every respect. Except for high belt line, which is a modern style now and the Golf is not the worst. Has glass become more expensive or what?

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 роки тому +1

      I think in future, the TSI will have been seen to have been the better choice. The 1.0 engine is the same as in my Seat Toledo and lots of other Volkswagen Group products, and it is a wet belt engine, so that may be a problem in the future (Mr Coleman is not a fan). I don't rate the Ford Ecoboost engine as much. Tim's car was immaculate, and was around two months old with 700 miles on the clock.
      The high belt line is common on a lot of cars due to side impact safety regulations. The hard touch door tops in the rear were not great and really let the side down a bit.

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Stanley! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I did get a little animated when speaking about the ISOFIX covers, but then that's a running joke... Golfs are expensive, but then they are excellent quality. My Seat Toledo has more space than a Golf, but I paid £12,500 for it brand new (got a £8,000 discount, which is still available today, funnily enough, as there are still some unregistered examples out there for sale even if production stopped six months ago). You can't get that kind of discount on a Golf, but then they hold their value better and they do have a noticeably higher quality interior. Whether or not that is worth the price premium is up to you, I wouldn't say the Toledo is poor quality, it just isn't quite as good. I have been offered a Seat Leon FR for a review later this year, which is based on the same platform, so we will be doing a little comparison, I hope!
