How Do Antidepressants And Antipsychotic Drugs Change Your Brain? with Robert Whitaker

  • Schizophrenics in the United States currently fare worse than patients in the world’s poorest countries. Medical journalist Robert Whitaker argues that modern treatments for the severely mentally ill are just old medicine in new bottles, and that we as a society are deeply deluded about their efficacy. The widespread use of lobotomies in the 1920's and 1930's gave way in the 1950's to electroshock and a wave of new drugs. In what is perhaps Robert Whitaker’s most damning revelation, he examines how drug companies in the 1980's and 1990's skewed their studies to prove that new anti-psychotic drugs were more effective than the old, while keeping patients in the dark about dangerous side effects.
Robert Whitaker raises important questions about our obligations to the mad, the meaning of “insanity,” and what we value most about the human mind.

Just my own opinion . But from personal experience of taking antipsychotics and from the research I’ve done , I think it is morally reprehensible to prescribe these drugs . I can understand it if someone has symptoms of psychosis and delusions etc , but even then the side effects are terrible and can destroy ones quality of life from no sexual function to horrible cognitive impairment , to obesity . And it’s not like neuroleptics are only taken by schizophrenics . Psychiatrists will prescribe them for anything , and then they won’t even really go into explicit detail as to how they might effect the patient long term. Some dude like me will just be desperate to feel better and just take them , and then will later realise what a huge fucking error that was . Ive spoken to a few people and I’ve read up on a lot of people who took antipsychotics for a whole list of issues and it messed them up in so many ways . It eventually just becomes a fight to not only feel better emotionally like it was in the first place but rather to just gain a fraction of the mental ability that the person once had . I mean if that isn’t a fucking inefficient , painful and evil way to “treat” patients then I don’t know what is . You would think that in today’s world we would have a better way to treat mental health , other than this trial and error of horrendous mood stabilisers , antidepressants and antipsychotics . They might as well just give you a blunt force concussion and tell you that it’s medical treatment . It would save a lot of time . And it would be a lot less traumatic. I dare say it would probably Mess someone up less than the method we have now

SO well put. I wholeheartedly AGREE with you. Lied to with religious BS and Big Harma. Also, I think beginning with domestic violence in the home, then at school. Corporal punishment, spankings, etc.is not acceptable as discipline. Grew up in Oklahoma where incidence of domestic violence per capita is greater than any other state. I was raised in it. Was all I knew. Then sent to a catholic parochial school where physical punishment was also administered. We are brainwashed into thinking we deserve to be beaten with a belt, switch, ruler, hand, etc. After all, it's endorsed by the fukking bible. There is no evidence of a god, they made it all up. It's bullshit. Hoping everyone will heal from child abuse, complicated even more by these poisonous drugs. And the ones who abused us were also abused. Society is fukking sick. $$$ Driving religion and the p'HARM'aceutical industry. Industries of DEATH. That's my arrogant ass opinion. Ever thought about the horrific carnage done by the Catholic church? The Inquisition, the holocaust.Hitler was Christian. Thought he was doing God's work exterminating the jews that killed 'god's " so called son. The god of the bible is fukking fiction. God(s) are man made. Most people who call themselves christian, have never even read the entire Bible. It is nothing but myths, folklore, sorceries abd other superstitious magical thinking. Yet people cling to the nonsense they've been taught since birth. Sad. Sad, sad.

My son was wrongly diagnosed with schizophrenia and sectioned and forced onto clozapine,
the deterioration in his condition is horrific, but they still insist he has been correctly diagnosed and this is the correct medication.
there is no words in the human language to discribe what he has been through, tortured relentlessly.
once your are diagnosed it no longer about you, it is about the drugs,
The professionals defend them even when it is obvious there is a major problem. The drug companies run the whole show,
the treatment plans are all designed by them to maximize profits. The whole system is corrupt from the institutes of clinical excellence who give the go ahead for these drugs right down to the doctors surgery. There are measures in place to protect the professionals when it all goes wrong, Many of the doctors are very arrogant as they know they are untouchable. They are duty bound to defend the drugs and treatment plans even when they know they are not working. They will not rock the boat as they are so well paid and would be sacked if they told the truth. Unfortunatelly this is the reality and the sick world we live in.

There is something psychiatrists often spread, that psychotic episodes lead to dementia, so you have to take your medication to avoid that. I would like to know if that is true. I had a girlfriend that suffered a lot due to her medications, and she wasn't a normal person, she had issues, but the medication not only didn't bring much improvement as it also brought side effects. The main justification was that if let without the anti-psychotic she would degenerate into madness. She is taking 6 different medications at the same time, and spending a small fortune with a physician.

imo , neuroleptics aka antipsychotic drugs are torture and should never be used . Parents, friends , coworkers will tell you how much better you are when you are being tortured from within . How we behave towards others , How others behave towards ourselves and how we behave with our selves determines mental health or as was used 30 or so years ago "happiness" -- relatively speaking -- sadness and in my opinion somewhere in between is where most of us are at most of the time and that is good . Giving ourselves and others "some slack" or our frailties are what makes us "human" . We got to stop being each other's sergeants . stop pulling each other's strings .
However this is difficult in this age of "all inclusive" internet . They want us to be cookie cutter people and produce and consume . We as humans are becoming flesh and blood hardware and software , a part of what makes neoliberal capitalism go round . Stop it !!
It doesn't matter if it is atypical, new or old all neuroleptics are torture . if memory serves, In the old Soviet Union circa 1950s to circa 1989 Dissidents were tortured with thorazine . At the same time American psychiatrists were dosing patients 2 to 3 times that much and thought it was ok .
Abilify , will cause akathisia just as bad as the old haldol and thorazine imo , although i have never taken it nor have i been on neuroleptics for 30 years . but that year of neuroleptic akathisia in my late teens still scars me to this day . I always have this knee jerk reaction to feel fear or shame about every time i am about to let go and relax . thats what torture does to one . you can never trust anyone again .....later. peace, love and joy to you my comrades and i don't have anything good to say about family , friends, society because they drove us nuts , in my opinion

Once you realise how much shit you don't need in life, and it's all just clever marketing and disinformation- you'll see you dont really need much other than good food, exercise and disconnecting from the modern worlds traps / technology and shit.
if u have a serious issue like OCD or Anxiety or Depression it is your actions that can reduce it's effect / severity, you might not ever fully rid of yourself of these conditions but you can lesson it greatly through your own studies on these conditions and the actions you take to mitigate them.
I had bad anxiety & depression, but most of it was solved by changing my life, i am by no means suffering from Schizophrenia or OCD which is alot more severe- but i think the same principle should roughly apply to some extent.

preface : the following is my opinion and stories i have heard . I am not liable if you take it as advice, etc . do your own research or get some good folks to help you do research . thanks .
imho - Any of you been on benzodiazepines for a long time ? Usually as an adjunct to neuroleptics or you happen to be in that time and space in the 1980s and 1990s when xanax was the only relief we felt after a decade or less after being traumatized by neuroleptics ? They were dolling out xanax in the 1980s(at least at the anxiety clinic or group in my city) like way over toxicity , like 10 mg per day .
While i am still benzodiazepine dependent , I am on 3 5mg of valium(diazepam) per day . You lose or overuse , in my experience you got 5 days at least till you go into withdrawals and seizures . Klonopin is really really hard to survive in withdrawal without going insane or dieing . i hear a lot of horror stories from comrades in detox . Must of them jumped ship and went out into the illegal market . Again this is hearsay and my opinion but most heroin addicts have told me that their benzo detox was worse than their smack detox . Again , i don't know all the facts, just feedback i get
So i got my quack(shrink, psychiatrist, medical school failure, et al) to transfer me from Klonopin(clonazepam) to the original diazepam--valium ( or maybe diazepam was second after librium ? )
Well at first the moron thought mg to mg . So this jerk puts me on 3mg of valium a day to replace 3 mg of clonazepam ! i got a new quack and she put me on the lowest "range" dose of valium which 15 mg per day is equivalent to 1.5 clonazepam . It was a wasted year , starting to get use to it i guess . I am for the Swiss Program of addictive drug maintenance . It cuts the violent crime , patients naturally take less smack or other addictive drugs like benzos , addicts don't have to sell their bodies or do petty theft and they are no longer in the desperation of where my next fix going to come from . they work , and have a relatively decent life and anecdotally they have eventually, over time, maybe yeaRS a bigger percent of drug addicts and users come off completely , imo the abstinence model does not work

always believe in organism healing abilities. Sleep is the biggest hope, once you get to the point you can sleep, give up "entertainment" or so, that doesn't taste anyway and sleep as long as you can. I believe every extra sleep should contribute to my healing, that's what I do (got nothing better actually), and I'll never lose my faith. Also try to cook, eat something hot everyday, observe what your organism might need to eat, someone recommended saturated animal fats. I also feel I need (maybe for another reasons) ascorbic acid (pure vitamine c). Read, get knowledge, prob no caffeine is good now. Don't take anything for granted, find your own ways, never give up. I also take long baths more often, try to create best circumstances for healing, it's still slow though, enjoy every tiny step forward

@@mihaitilting7081 you have no idea about the brain damage, the thing that is no longer a withdrawal becouse it lasts for months (for me already) or years, it changes perception and it's not a congnitive decline luckily for me. My imagination was damaged, so yes it's in the brain. Feeling the atmoshpere around worse, darker (especially before, at worse days it was even pshycodelic). Why would you ever want to mock the victim of this horrible system? I was forced on that thing and before that everything was normal. Luckily I was on it very short amount of time, otherwise your 'cognitive decline' would hit too (struggled with that a bit too, like around a month of my design work I need to pretty much redesign).

We all are correct in our understanding of the impact of these medicines on our own lives. Abilify took away my violence and misanthropy. And now I can’t affoard it. So I’m cold turkey suffering. Great. I’m a college grad and I still live on ramen noodle survival levels. God. I’m going to take a glock dose one day to end this pain.

"It’s not an authority or professionally written - and I am NOT a medical professional. I do however have a lot of first-hand experience ingesting pharmaceutical (psychiatric) medications and a Bachelor’s degree in psychology." - mentalhealthdaily.com/about/
I'd take this acknowledgement (of the author of the article) regarding his professional background very seriously. Basically, he is a guy like me with a tremendous interest in science and quite thorough critical thinking skills.
However, lack of a thorough knowledge about the subject is really dangerous and makes him open to serious blunders in conclusions.
"In the past it was long assumed that schizophrenia was a neurodegenerative condition..." - well it is. Just look at the UNTREATED schizophrenics and you will see HOW degenerative the illness ITSELF is. It is NOT the antipsychotic medications. Even if it was a bit adversary, the benefits from treating schizophrenia with AP far outhweight the negative effects it has. I can not stress enough what a difference is between a treated and untreated patient.
To sum it up: IF you need an AP medication you should take it no questions asked. In some cases like personality disorder you MIGHT not need it or it MIGHT even be counterproductive. In these cases you might ask for another MEDICAL opinion from a professional you trust.

I believe that it may be possible if a person takes a particular medication be it SSRI, antipsychotic etc. that the brain indeed may try to compensate.
However, SSRI’s (for those who’s brain accept it). Play a crucial role in allowing people to live a “normal life”, by suppressing crying bouts, alleviating suicidal ideation, giving the person more energy to function, get out of bed, alleviating feelings of heaviness/hopelessness.
I am a therapist, and I can honestly say that Zoloft & Wellbutrin were God sends in helping me get back to normal functioning after a severe depressive episode!
Yes there are side affects, such as depersonalization, blurry vision (up close to objects, and sometimes headaches. However the benefits far outweigh the negatives.
I was in a pit & couldn’t treat my clients due to my own personal issues. As a result I took a leave from work and started medication and exercise, also all the “coping strategies” I teach my clients.
After 5 months I’m feeling better and about to start the titration period.
These medications aren’t supposed to be lifelong, but instead when using along with therapy allows you to get back to normal functioning with recognition of how the depression came on for example, trauma , loss of loved one, anxiety (focusing on this out of our control), and so on. When you stop the medication, your brain will work on returning to its previous baseline.

Have you never considered that perhaps crying is sometimes what we need? Let go for just a moment of the idea that there's anything different between the people you label mentally ill and people you label as healthy. Can you look at a "mentally ill" person as a human being? When someone cries, they're crying for a reason. How would you comfort a friend who was crying? Would you try to stop their crying by force? I would hope not. Then why do it to anyone else?

    • @capresti3537

Nobody's brain accepts SSRI's. SSRI's are neurotoxins just like all psychiatric drugs. They permanently damage the brain and cause apathy fatigue depression confusion and no feelings. There are no benefits with these drugs only harm. When taken for prolonged periods of time its impossible to get off and permanent neurological damage remains. You speak nonsense.
