  • When is the Best Time to Take Hardwood Cuttings? In this episode of Plant Propagation 101, we'll explore the best time to take hardwood cuttings and why. We're going to get into all the details of why I like to take them in late winter and place on bottom heat and the advantage this timing provides as spring and summer emerge.

    You are absolutely right about rooting anything. Norwegian Maples, all you have to do, like you said is put a branch in your compost pile over the winter and in spring they start rooting themselves. This tree is actually listed as an invasive plant in New England. I watched one of your past videos on propagating clippings. I thought I would give it a shot in the middle of November. I cut 8 lilac clippings, 8 blueberry clippings, and 6 apple tree clippings. I dipped each one of them into a vitamin B1 liquid for less than five seconds, dipped them into a rooting powder and two-three weeks later the blueberry and lilacs are already covered in buds and one of the lilacs has leaves growing out of the top. Nothing from the apple tree yet but I'm not giving up. I've had grow lights on them for at least 12-14 hrs a day and they seem to be thriving. Going to wait a few weeks more and then seperate them and put them each in their own pot. And the best part is, like you said they are exact clones of their mothers so I know exactly what kind each of them are. The apple trees I clipped are Cortland apples.

    Mike, this is very exciting ...several years ago, I tried to root cuttings from an apricot tree, one my grandmother had grown in Colorado. Well, I had no idea what to do so I just stuck a couple branches in some water, before heading home. Well, needless to say, that was a total bust, all I ended up with was slimy rotted twigs in some really stinky water. Since apricot trees are similar to peach trees, I need to pay close attention to your upcoming videos on propagating fruit trees. I would love to have a clone from grandma's tree growing in my backyard. Blessings to you and your sweet family! ~Margie🤗🌱🍑

They get wrapped in wet newspaper and stored in a plastic bag. Peach and pomegranate erk.
    Easter is 17 April. Late Easter, late spring.
    Westfield seek-no-further apple. A man bought land in the Westfield, MA, area when it was a colony. He put the house and orchard on a hill to stay safer from raiders. Later, the family moved away, but one tree refused to give up. When a storm took it down, it drove branches into the rocky soil that sprouted. It did this a number of times over 200 years, and the tree is still there, tho far downhill from where it first grew. Hasta, nieto! Bueno suerte.

      Definitely make sure it’s a plastic that is rated for sun exposure. Green house plastics have UV inhibitors that extend there life. Most of them are rated to last 4 years but mine has been in place for just over 13 years. I use a white plastic that blocks about 50% of the sun. I chose that plastic because I mainly grow rhododendrons and they like shade. You can purchase the plastic online at a greenhouse supply and they’ll ship to your door.

I prepared cuttings correctly, left couple leaves I trimmed on ea cutting because the entire tree was still green albeit very dry from the trip. I’m wondering what you would do with them now since the plant wasn’t dormant…but as you know it’s semi deciduous. I stuck them in my plant room where I have a large grow light I use in winter for succulents etc..OR should I leave them in the glassed in mud room that’s almost exact outside temp. Hey Cindy! If you want the cuttings to grow roots now then you'll need them in a warmer environment. I would keep them inside under your grow light and give them 6 to 8 weeks to root. Rooting typically happens more slowly for landscape plants that are rooted indoors under light but that's what you've got right now since it's winter. Good luck!

    Mike. I just got a perfect Rhode location cleaned up and ready to go. It’s on the north side of a row of tall conifers. I’d like to put in rhodys that are going to get 8-10 feet and blocky the view of my neighbors drive way. What would be your favorite Rhody to do that with. By the way, it seems your nursery is only 2:15 minutes from my house and I’m headed that way next week. Is your nursery really in Yelm Washington?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Рік тому

      Yes, but I'm a wholesale nursery. I don't have a retail setup here. For a hedge of rhododendrons to block out your neighbors, I have 2 favorites. They are rhododendrons Grandiflorum, and Boursalt. Both can usually be found at local big box stores and they are both very good growers that will acheive large size and a thick bushy look if given enough time. Most of the larger rhododendrons like those are rated at growing to 6 feet in 10 years, so it will take some time. You can speed that along with a deep layer of mulch, constant drip irrigation through the summer, and annual fertilization with a slow release fertilizer. Also, don't plant them too close to the base of the conifers unless you have constant water going to them as the conifers will suck the life out of the soil around them (as I'm sure you are aware). The only thing else I'd add is that the ideal condition is for them to get about 50% shade through the day. The best time to shade them is in the late afternoon when the sun is beating down and the air is the hottest.

I years past, I had trouble with mold and rot by putting in a piece of moist paper towel. I am a little more sophisticated this year and have one of those RH meters that fit inside a quart jar. I have it inside my zip lock to check the relative humidity. I can not find any information on what the ideal RH would be for winter storage of cuttings. My RH gadget is reading 82 now inside the bag and I am wondering what number I should be shooting for. I am sure this makes a big difference in the amount of time cuttings can remain viable inside the fridge.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Рік тому

      I'm not that sophisticated, lol. I just clean them, rinse them off, and put them in a plastic ziplock bag while still moist. In fact, most of the time I don't even clean them. I know that doesn't sound very scientific, but it works well for me. If you're worried about them then I'd just clean them off with soap and water, and store in plastic bags.

    I want to try to root apples. I know I'd end up with BIG trees rather than dwarfed ones but just rooting them instead of starting a seed and then grafting would be so much faster I think. (Plus I think I got that trunk splitting disease in the roots that can't be got rid of. )

    • @MikeKincaid79

      I’m sure you’d be fine with whatever root system your cuttings create. Heavy mulch smooths over a lot of problems and you can prune the trees to whatever size you want. Good luck!

I was worriedwould stems started to become would do something strange But within a week EVERY CUTTING produced the little white that root buds. I was so elated. I have pictures and the aren’t the best. The main tote is doing ok but it started brown the stems and drop leaves. I’m totally afraid to keep this up when loosing every stem is disheartening. What size cuttings are you using? Sometimes the thin wispy cuttings will root and then don't do well once transplanted. Try thicker (1/2 or thicker) cuttings. They tend to hold up better. Willow cuttings will root very well in water and there shouldn't be a problem with that. Have you seen all my willow videos. I cover a lot of the information you may be looking for.

    I’m going to take my well established 20 y/o Fig tree cuttings, within the next 2 weeks.
    It’s 4 March now & I’m worried. I promised my cousin in Puerto Rico I’d send already rooted cuttings to him in Puerto Rico. But my major queries are: 1) How to wrap the cuttings for safety, moisture & then, how to send them (FedEx/UPS/USPS)?
    I don’t even know if I’m allowed to send live plants to Puerto Rico; anyone know?
    And
    2) This Fig Tree I propagated years ago from a few 1” thick cuttings my Italian great Granddad planted when he came to America.
    The original tree had to be moved because the next-door neighbor wanted it out wanted plain old flowers 🌺 between our houses.
    So, this Fig tree is old about 20 yrs.since I planted it from the original tree’s cuttings.
    It’s been wonderful & every year since, the other (nice Fig loving) neighbors are thrilled to share in my sweet tasty Figs in August/September.
    So really, the second question 🤷🏻‍♀️ after all that explanation is…. Exactly what species/type of Fig tree is my Great- Granddad’s Fig?!!! After all these years, I’ve asked everyone I can, to look at the leaves, Bark & Figs but no one around here knows!
    How in the heck can I get a definitive answer what kind of Fig Tree do I have in my front yard now? I’d pay a fortune to find out what kind of tree did my Great- Granddad plant probably came from Italy+/- 80-100 years ago?
    Does anyone know if you can send plants to Puerto Rico & can anyone look at my tree’s bark 🪵 leaves 🍃 and fruit🍈 then identify this Wonderful Fig Tree?
    I’ll pay pretty big moolah 💰 to find out. 🧐

      The first person I saw on U'tube that had any success rooting a persimmon cutting looks like he took cuttings after the new growth for the year became somewhat mature. and he left a heel of the old wood on the bottom of the cutting. He then removed all the leaves but the top one which he removed abou three fourths of the leaf. Only one cutting out of several he was trying had rooted when he did his follow up video. I think it would be worth trying heel cuttings or mallet cuttings. Just a thought when you add persimmons to your propagating successes! Love your videos!
