      I wonder how this could work in practice as some games have differences in UI/text scaling between portable and docked, or portable exclusive features that use the touch screen. Mandating docked mode for Switch 1 BC would be out of the question, maybe allow a launch option or for the devs to toggle it?

      @@MisterTambourineMan The base Switch can already change modes on the fly when docked. The easy solution is to include a toggle in a system sub-menu for Switch 1 games. The default could be docked mode with the option to change to portable mode if desired.

      Yep, 720p looks just fine in handheld mode. People who claim they can see the pixels should stop having their nose touch the screen and hold the console at a normal viewing distance.
      Hell, most phone games do not even run at native res. Waste of battery life and you do not even notice the reduced resolution due to how small the screen is.
      UA-cam also tend to favour 480p if possible on phone because most of the time, you do not notice on such a small screen.
      If they were to increase the res, it would be to something like 900p. There is very little sense in going for 1080p on such a small display.

      @Ozzianman 3 місяці тому

      @@balloonb0y677
      It depends. Going off the assumption it is a Switch game running at 720p:
      If the higher screen resolution is exactly double which in this case would be 2560x1440 (Which Nintendo will never go for due to cost and battery life), then yes, 720p would look fine. That is called integer scaling. It just doubles the pixels so it remains crisp. That is why PSP games look amazing on the PS Vita as its display is exactly double the resolution of the PSP.
      If the resolution is not exactly the double, then some kind of image interpolation is used when upscaling. In most cases this causes the images to blur, which looks bad and makes the game look worse unless you got an upscaler like DLSS or XeSS which uses AI (something I am hoping Switch 2 will support). If you have ever played a DS game on a 3DS without disabling the upscaling, then you should know what I am talking about.
      So no, higher resolution screen does not necessarily mean it will look better. What can make games look a lot better without increasing the resolution is by using panels with better color accuracy like OLEDs or MiniLEDs which in my opinion is a way more worthwhile upgrade for a handheld.
      Higher numbers is not always better.

    IF the screen size is bigger, then there does not need to be upscaling from 720P into 1080P on original Switch -games, as those games can be displayed with black boarders around the screen.
    But in order this to work, Switch 2 would need to utilize exact same pixel density as original Switch.

Every time I pick up my Switch I immediately see pixels and think to myself, ‘Oh yeah, I have to deal with the blurry screen now.’

Even if Switch 2 in portable mode has the same number of Tflops as PS4, it will still be significantly more performant.

  • @customsongmaker
    @customsongmaker 3 місяці тому

    Too much? The Switch 2 will be 8 years ahead of the Switch. That's a lot of time for hardware to get better. Nintendo has never taken this long between generations, so expect a drastic improvement.
    There's also the possibility that there will be a parallel GPU in the dock for higher resolutions on the TV.
    But in handheld mode they need higher resolution so the tablet can be used as a VR headset. The Switch already does that with cardboard goggles, but it's pixelated with the screen that close to your eyes.
    Switch 2 could be the first console to sell 200 million units. Especially since Nintendo has enough time and money to start manufacturing early. They could even manufacture the tablets ahead of time while they're still adding features to the dock.
    The only reason no console has ever sold more than 2 million at launch is because no company has ever manufactured more than that fast enough for launch.
    After Switch 2 comes out, Sony will be in trouble and Microsoft might never release another console.

    With technology similar to the RTX 4050 mobility, the supposed Switch 2 could theoretically support two 2160p60 monitors. In the mobile world, most screens are currently 20:9 or close to that aspect ratio. Cheaper IPS screens are around 2400x1080, while premium screens are 3088x1440, with the iPhone sitting in between. Most mobile games operate at resolutions up to 1600x900. These resolutions are upscaled, and the popular anti-aliasing solution is TAA. This is also true for most current Switch games in Dock mode; for example, Crysis 2, Crysis 3, and Metro Redux are rendered at 900p with temporal upscaling methods.
    For the Switch 2, they will probably use a similar approach but with the help of DLSS. This means the internal resolution could vary between 720p and 900p, and DLSS can help achieve 1080p, 1440p, or 2160p. Developers might also use FSR, depending on their choice. Therefore, the difference between docked and handheld modes will likely be the target quality of this upscaling. On a higher PPI portable screen, less detail concentration is expected. Along with upscaling solutions, Variable Rate Shading will be introduced, allowing for dynamically lowering shader precision in portable mode. This will reduce resource usage without significantly compromising image quality.
    The Switch 2 could have either 1080p or 1440p screens, but my guess is that it will have a 1440p screen, as 1440p is a multiple of 720p. In Japan, 1440p portable screens are quite popular. Japan adopted 1080p much earlier than most places and is a major producer of screens. So if Nintendo has a chip capable of supporting a 1440p screen without compromises, they will use it. Thus, the Nintendo Switch 2 will likely have a 1440p portable screen and support 2160p on a TV, both upscaled from a lower resolution. However, the HUD would be fixed at the native or intermediate resolution.

Why are people asking for 720p for a console that will last until the 2030s?? Like WTF. Even 100$ phones won't have 720p screens by then. 1080p is exactly what a Next Gen Switch is supposed to have and the battery savings from 720p are so small that the crispier and less blurry image a 1080p screen offers is much better in my opinion.

  • @OhluhKayTall
    @OhluhKayTall 3 місяці тому

    No, 1080p isn't too much for a mobile chipset. The most important aspect of whether they go with 720p or 1080p depends on what the docked resolution will be. 1080p and 720p with 4X scale is 4k and 1440p respectively. A great visual for this is split-screen multiplayer, where each player's screen res would ideally be 1080p or 720p respectively on a native 4k screen.
    If the target is 4k with mostly upscaled games, with some indie and 1st party games running native 4k (yes it's doable. Devs/publishers that care enough will optimize their games), then the screen should be 1080p because it evenly scales into 4k.
    if the target is 1440p, 720p would be better because 720p evenly scales into 1440p.

    As weird as 900p might sound, if every switch 2 is that resolution, it'd be easy to develop for it and would be a good balance of battery life/image quality/performance. Give 90hz VRR as an option or lock to 60 for slightly better battery. And it shouldn't be too expensive since the volume of switches can easily bring down cost. No manufacturer would turn down 20+ million units.

    I don't know. I mean, 1080p WOULD undoubtedly look better. It's like a lot of the displays that were fine at 1080p when 1440p or 4K came around. Technically you can get a plenty good enough image at 1080p on those old 32 - 40 inch displays at around 4 - 5 feet away. But you do still notice a clarity boost at 1440p or 4K there. It's kind of the similar thing here on these handhelds. We're looking at smaller screens, yes, but also at a much shorter distance from our face. And I can definitely still notice jaggies, some artifacting, and pixelation from 720p on these handhelds. Especially because the way they are achieving this is by forgoing a lot of the post-processing (to save on performance). And while that's fine, at lower resolutions like these it's not that much more expensive to just generate a good image from the start. Sure, I'd say the same as John if the discussion was 1080p to 1440p or 4K simply because the higher you go on resolution (beyond a certain point) the cheaper that most AA and other post-processing solutions will be relative to going to the higher resolution (and probably still needing some of them).
    But at lower resolutions like this going up to 1080p I don't think the power cost is going to be significantly different than all of the extra post processing needed to make 720p look good on these smaller displays. Like, I've hacked the switch to output to 1080p on handheld mode with the clock speed boosts as well. And it absolutely does improve clarity and fix a lot of the jaggy, clarity and pixelation issues some games have, even with absolutely no additional post processing being done. Sure, there is a slight performance cost increase. But it's nowhere near as expensive still as the resolutions most consoles are trying to hit. And hell, I even agree with some of the people in these comments, if 1080p seems too high, just aim for 900p. On a handheld it'd be barely (if even) noticeable of a difference from 1080p and still give roughly a 15% or so performance increase over 1080p while still looking much more crisp than 720p. It might scale even worse with last gen (Switch 1) titles, but I suppose patches could be introduced in egregious cases to support a higher rendering resolution. Not an optimal solution, but I think would really improve the games on Switch 2. If they launched with a proper OLED screen on Switch 2 (which they probably won't, but if they did) then they could do like Steam Deck OLED and just have an ever so slightly larger screen for 900p that would just cut off a few rows and columns of pixels when rendering at 720p to provide a closer to native feel like the Switch 1 for games that struggle to achieve 900p. Or upscale, but alas there are options.

    We don’t even know what the official specs are for switch 2 and here you are making a prediction good God why don’t we just wait to see when the system announced and then we can talk about what it can or can’t do because everything you’re basing, your knowledge on is nothing more than speculation based on Patents and so-called leaks that have no validity to them

    The iPhone 13 Pro Max has 6.7 in screen with a a resolution of 2778x1284.
    The iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 6.7 in screen with a resolution of 2796x1290
    The Switch OLED has a 7 in screen with 720p (handheld) and 1080p (docked).
    If Nintendo can manage to have at least a 7 in OLED/Mini LED/QLED display with 1080p handheld and 1440p docked I think it'd be perfect; especially if through AI they can improve the visual fidelity while in backwards compatibility.
    I feel like comparing smartphones, Nintendo is similar to Apple whereas PlayStation is more similar to Android.

      This is for the actual screen of the console, not how much it can output on the TV. Even the Steam Deck doesn't have a 1080p screen, it just causes a lot of problems in many areas.

      Battery is a huge concern that goes away with a power supply. There’s no easy way to get around battery limitations unless everyone was fine with being plugged in. It’s easy to say give us more power! But again battery seems to be the biggest limitation when it comes to these small devices. If we get some great battery tech advancements, then you can make that point.

      Modern games in 1080p is a problem for all modern mobile devices. The iPhone 15 Pro plays modern high graphical games only at 720p. Assassins creed Mirage only at 590p.
      The Steam deck only has a 720p screen.
      Mobile hardware isnt as powerful as people think. Just because they can render webpages and videos in 1080p doesnt mean they can render modern games in 1080p.

    we don't know anything about it (and don't start with the Tegra 239 thing, its regurgitated info from 2020), but my own prediction it that it will be a nvidia something chipset, with a arm/mediatek cpu at a similar lvl of xbox series s cpu (its not really hard to match considering those are around ryzen 5 2600 lvl), gpu wise its where it gets more interesting, my bet it that it will be a super customized ampere that is =/= or ada itself, with raw power around xbox one x in terms of teraflops or even a bit higher (6-7 teraflops), lppdr5x ram, likely the 7500mt version (12-16gb), 256-512gb of ssd (not that crazy speeds but around series x lvl, which is more than enough),, that based on logic and Nintendo's president's own words, they want to go foward with the 3rd party support and that he said in 2019 they would look to use proper tech to the era they are, nothing of this has become real yet as they have only released new models since then, but consider this, next console will lauch 4+ years later than ps5/xbox series, compared to the exact 3 years switch did against ps4/xbox one (the console was supposed to launch in november of 2016), but stock issues pushed it to 2017), that's a year and 1/4 more time to get a stronger chip compared to switch, to put it in perspective its like the first switch released in march of 2018 instead, it would probably had the X2, and making the proper calculations (architecture, bandwidth, etc), that chip is around 75-80% capable as a xbox one, and this time maybe nintendo wouldn't have needed to downclock it as they did in our timeline cuz its more efficient with a smaller node than X1, that's how big of a jump a single year can do, next console will be fine

      By "regurgitated info from 2020", you mean a chip that's had continuous shipping data updated, indicating not only that it's still set to release, but that thousands of physical chips exist.

    given that the performance of the Switch 2 will match the xbox one vcr I think that 720p is more than enough anyway the dlss is not going to work miracles.

    Smartphones and tablets can go well above 1080p. Assassin's Creed Mirage plays wonderfully on the iPad. Genshin Impact looks great on iPhone and Android at 1080p. So, 1080p on Switch should be achievable.

      It also depends on the NATIVE resolution on your screen. You can´t compare that. And OLED will look sharper, even with 720p (native).

    I think it will be 1080p screen and the Switch backwards compatibility will be based on Switch 1 docked mode settings which will look fine on such a small screen if not sharper than a 40" 1080p TV at reasonable distance.

    • @Loundsify
      @Loundsify 3 місяці тому

      Should also add that docked switch has better graphic settings quite often. Better LOD distance, shadows, higher rendering resolution etc. it's a win win for backwards compatibility as the games will look better than the standard switch in handheld.
