- Opera San Jose will begin a run of Cinderella next week, featuring the opera’s composer-turned-conductor, 17-year old musical prodigy Alma Deutscher. Joe Rosato Jr. reports.

The fact that all the best musicians in the history of the world had a non USA origen isn't a coincidence.
I just keep Frank Sinatra and that's all.
My wife and I saw this opera in Vienna when Alma was 11 and we laughed and cried. Alma has the most amazing ability to put emotion into her music. We feel like we personally know one of history's musical giants, like a Mozart or a Beethoven. A privilege to be alive to see and hear her!

While watching several videos of Alma I notice that she is a lovely person capable of doing wonderful things in and with music. Really nice to see the orchestra following her lead and see how she conducts in a very natural way

The residents of the Bay Area will be the envy of the world. Sadly, I am too old to travel the 8,000 miles to see the opera. Alma is the greatest musical talent of my lifetime and perhaps of all time.

I lived in Los Gatos, just a few miles from San Jose, for years. But moved halfway across the country. Damn!

I don’t think this needs encouragement. Anybody who understands from music knows that this is a phenomenon and her music is not only beautiful but also therapeutic.

A remarkable talent. It will be interesting to see how she develops as a composer. Miss Deutcher says she wants to bring melody back into classical music, a fine ambition, though I hope it doesn't mean she wants to take music back to the 19th C. I hope her mentors/teachers are encouraging her to listen to all sorts of music and all sorts of styles. I believe now is the time for this young prodigy to branch out and and show us all what she can dousing a more modern, progressive style of melody and harmony - there are plenty of good tunes in Britten, Tippett, Shostokovich, Bartok etc etc. I await her next effort.
Her latest item in Austria is half opera, half musical, and a bit of deliberately lousy modern. I hope it comes to the states soon.
Oh how I wish Opera Memphis would bring her her to this region of the country.

Not all conductors are also the composers of the pieces they’re conducting. On top of that, not all conductors are Masters of playing instruments, which with piano and violin, Alma is.
The people call her a prodigy, not Alma.

She has a lovely gift from the Lord. God has given us so many amazing gifts, sights, experiences. On a side note --- ridiculous for so many in the symphony to be wearing those unhealthy masks.

There are hundreds of thousands of us on earth who would love to be there, and there will only be a very few who will actually have this privilege. If what you say is true and they are having trouble selling tickets, there is a serious problem with the people of California!
@@luc5798 Actually I believe that they are sold out with the planned performance and opened up a new set of performances to give more people a chance to attend.
@@luc5798 Alma is almost an adult now, now she has to stand on her own merits and cannot ride on the child prodigy hype as she used to do.
I bought my ticket! It wasn’t cheap but it’s worth every cent to see her conduct her own work.

But she has a fantastic talent and it is her talent and the beauty of what she composes that makes her successful. She will always be a prodigy anyway, all her life. I truly wish her well, and I hope she finds her own voice in the near future, but there is nothing memorable about this opera. I saw it live in San Jose, and she conducted. Kudos to her for that. But no opera house will be performing this fifty years from now. It is devoid of musical interest and originality.
I am not a modernist complaining about tonality. I love tonality. What I don't love is a lack of melodic memorability. I haven't heard anyone humming one of her melodies. There is nothing memorable about her music. Please find your voice, Alma.
