There's 2 well known phrases here in the UK comparing Rugby with Football (soccer) and they are; Rugby is a game for thugs, played by gentleman whereas Football is a game for gentleman played by thugs. The other is; what's the difference between Rugby players and Football players...Rugby players spend the entire game trying to convince the ref they haven't been hurt, Football players spend the entire game trying to convince the ref they have been hurt

This my friend is the classic. Football has 22 players running about for 90 minutes pretending to be hurt. Rugby Union has 30 players running about for 40 minutes pretending NOT to be hurt.

Ohh rugby, i remember playing my first real game back in the 70s at school.
The field was just about solid.
The grass had frozen upright.
Getting tackled was not fun
All of us hobbled off legs shredded .

My dad had to play rugby at his school in Richmond in North Yorkshire,and it was brutal. People getting teeth knocked out and that kind of thing. They used to play the other schools in the region,and apparently Ripon were the roughest,dirtiest team of the all at the time.
I had the same experience; frozen pitch, playing in shorts and the teacher/referee was wearing two track-suits, gloves and a woolly hat.
This Saturdays final should be epic, South Africa v New Zealand The Haka is blood tingling. Go All Blacks.

I have played both Rugby in Scotland and American Football. I love both, but Rugby is by far the more entertaining, faster, more skilled, more brutal at times for sure, and more technically accomplished of the two. In Rugby the whole team plays for the whole match, running, tackling, passing, and hopefully scoring. No special teams and breaks on the sidelines when the offense or defense takes over as in American Football. Also, without the pads, you HAVE to know how to tackle properly and effectively to survive, lol. Rugby in my personal opinion is light years ahead of American Football in so many ways, and it's nice to see more and more Americans find and engage in the sport. The play is brutal at times, but the players are Gentlemen and friends off the pitch and the fans are incredible.

Boarding school in the 1950s and 60s - a field of war, with a few rules that were applicable if the referee was around, the objective was to win while taking out as many of the opposition as possible without getting caught. Most old-style British games seem to be a way of training boys for going to war as young men; learning to stand your ground, no matter what the opponent throws at you. Learning controlled aggression. Then afterwards shaking hands with the erstwhile enemy and going in to one's House and cleaning up and in the evening meeting up with everyone and enjoying being part of the Rugby Set.
We started playing Rugby at age 11 in school and competed against other local schools. It is a winter/spring sport (depending on where you are south=winter, north=spring) which means Freezing Fog/Sleet or snow and the ground is solid frozen mud ridges and spikes which you really feel when you hit them but its not as bad as it may sound as your focused and running about which distracts you and help keep you warm as for the knocks and bashes I think because you start at an early age you get used to it and it becomes second nature. Also there are female Rugby teams too, check them out, some tough and skilled girls there.
I remember the frozen mud! I remember playing and sliding over some and a worm cast, a FROZEN worm cast, cut my leg so badly I had to go to hospital for stitches (10 of them!). Still love rugby though, I wouldn’t change a thing…. Plus, having stitches when your 11 years old is COOL. Weeks of bragging rights.

I remember playing in a serious hail storm once at school, bloody painful on bare legs and I think those of us in the backs were in the early stages of hypothermia. Only time everyone was eager to get in the showers to defrost!🥶
I bet the kids probably don't play full contact rugby these days, because all of the health and safety rules these days. I maybe wrong.

I used to play rugby for my school when l was a teenager JJ. I wasn't a big lad but I was pretty good at it. Basically I got the shit kicked out of me every week, so I left and joined the drama club. True F'ing Story!
1:25 is State of Origin Rugby League between New South Wales and Queensland Australia. Rugby League is similar to Rugby Union but more freer flowing. Originally, Rugby League was the professional version of Rugby Union. State of Origin is particularly brutal.

I was 14 and in metalwork class in Croesyceiliog overlooking school rugby field. Where I saw my mate, Ian Mayers, get sucked into a ruck, processed and spat out the other end with broken ribs. But no-one cared in those days. It was all part of growing up and being Welsh.
I used to play for my high school. Back in the early seventies. That's when I fell in love with Ruby Union. Great fun, plenty of bumps, bruises, and stud marks to the back and front. If i could I'd play again. However, Age and health make it impossible. Still love watching it. You should try watching the woman playing. Brilliant. Great video mate.

Played rugby for my school team until I was 18. As a small school playing the local, and much bigger schools, was recipe for a lot of defeats - but still loved every moment of it.

The footballers pretend to be injured for the whole match,rugby players pretend they're not.
Always amazes me how some of these huge guys are so damn fast. Some of them would put on a good show in the 100m sprint.
Do you remember Geoff Capes the Shot putter? I played rugby against him when he played for Cambs Police and I played for RAF Honnington, back in the seventies. He was the fastest man on the pitch by far. Take a look at some old BBC "Superstars" with him in?

11 and 14 are the wingers, usually the fastest players on each team and usually the biggest threat to score, equate them with wide receivers who have to play defence

JJ, you have to watch the World Cup final this weekend between South Africa and New Zealand (the All Blacks) If you have never seen a Haka, you will be mesmerized, Also, if you feel like it, do a search for Nigel Owens, who was the fairest Referee that ever graced our screens. See how this little guy was able to control these hunking great big guys with just a few words. The respect he was shown by all the players is a pleasure to watch.

I, like many, started playing rugby at the age of 6 in South Africa. White frosted pitches, barefoot. You got tough real quick, or bowed out real quick..
dunkin' my choc digestive into my coffee here watching this and feeling safe as houses while watching this. I shudder to think of the injuries risk as the sport gets more and more competitive (vs medical procedures and operations that can be done, so maybe pushing players to take greater risks)

The Six Nations is on at the moment with Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England, France and Italy competing and 3 games over the weekends. Aside from the 6 Nations title there are other unofficial titles you'll hear during commentary like the Triple Crown (whe one of the isles countries beats the other three), the Grand Slam ( when a team beats all others) and thr Wooden Spoon for the team that looses every game (usually Italy😢). Great tournament with some of the top tier teams in the world.

I think what you are referring to is a ruck, this is formed when a player with the ball is tackled and goes to ground.
His team mates form the ruck to protect the ball, this also establishes the offside line, until the ball is played next.
The difference between American football players and us rugby players is Americans stop the game because there all whimps, the LA raders came over to England years ago, met the Welsh rugby team, after watching the Welsh team play a game they offered the raiders to a game and the raders immediately declined saying the way rugby is played is too dangerous
The world cup final is on Saturday at 8PM england time (not sure what that is in american time) its between South Africa and New Zealand ( all Black's )(who are arguably 2 of the best if not the best teams ever) you should watch it
They are so tough! No body protection is worn at all and many end up with cauliflower ears and broken noses. A game of rugby does roughly the the same damage to the body as a head on car crash!
I love how you are wincing. Here we start as kids. I started at 11 and it is just as violent. Almost all my friends at the time broke bones and kids still today and it is just part of growing up 👍
When we were taught Rugby in secondary school, the sports teacher picked the biggest guy to demonstrate on, how to make a tackle - and promptly broke his leg. It sounded like a twig snapping.

We have to play rugby in school in the UK and anyone who isn't remotely fit gets DESTROYED during matches. Easily the most terrifying bit of Physical Education

Used to play Hooker (The position not the profession), at minor club level years ago, now I'm in my early sixties I've already had one new hip and need the otherside doing now! If I could go back in time, I'd still do the same.

FYI the main thing in Rugby is you can ONLY tackle the ball carrier and only when they have feet on the ground....
There was actually two codes of Rugby being played in this video Rugby Union and Rugby League, as there major differences in rules it can be confusing to newbies, you mentioned standing back 10 metres (from what is called the play the ball after a tackle) happens in Rugby League only.
Played Rugby in the 90s, was working with the USAF at Greenham common. had a few Americans wanting to play the hardest thing to teach them was to put the ball down when over for a try, looking back now was funny.
My son plays Rugby and the more bruises and scraps the better it seems, badges of honor.....Built like tanks, hit like a freight train and the speed of a greyhound and it's all fun..the muddier the kit the better the game lol..

As a South African, I gotta say that Aussie Rules always looks faaaaaar more dangerous. Maybe someone more familiar with the sport can confirm/contradict.

In American football you only get about fifteen to twenty minutes of play in an hour and they don't kick much ball.
I read somewhere that on average American football players only actually play for 11 or 12 minutes per game because of all the stoppages. If so, then it's a very easy game!!!!!!!
At the national level ancient battles between the nations of England, Ireland, Scotland,Wales and France are refought every year. The Italians are allowed in now but they don't have enough historical chips on their shoulders to be aggrieved at anybody and vice versa.
The game would stop while dealing with an injured player, to slow down the pace of the game for the losing opponent. This is why they do not stop play.

I'm as old as the hills now, but the two toughest guys I've ever 'Personally' known were Tony Sibson who fought Marvelous Marvin Hagler for The Middleweight Championship of the world and another guy (who's name I won't mention), who used to play Rugby for Leicester Tigers, a very well respected UK Rugby team. Both of those guys were harder than a coffin nail. If I had to pick who was the toughest out of them? Even though Tony was a trained fighter, I'd Have to say the Rugby player would have the edge, because he was like Brick Sht House...
If a player goes down injured in rugby you know he's hurt because there's no advantage in faking it and his team is a man down whilst he's being checked by the physio. Unlike football where players fall over if someone gives them a funny look.
The ref CAN stop play if it looks serious or the medical team indicate play should stop because a player needs to be stretchered off, etc.
My partner plays rugby and always arrives home covered in bruises - he loves it!

The only reason a rugby match will stop is if the doctor comes on when injured player with medic is in the way of play of the ball.
True story a player from my team Halifax panthers(league) was seen to be injured and they felt he needed to go straight off to hospital so they struggled to get him in an ambulance as he didnt want to go. Half way up the hill out of the stadium of Odsal(Bradford Bulls stadium) the back doors of the ambulance flung open and he came running back down the hill and was begging to get back on the pitch 😂. Now thats rugby players for you 😂.

Rugby is a sport of gentlemen played by hooligans. Although as rough and brutal as the sport looks, it’s very family friendly and I have never been worried about taking my kids to a game. JJ, if you are able to, watch this weekends final between South Africa and New Zealand, it’s guaranteed to be a great game (my moneys on the All Blacks). There have been many rugby legends over time, but see if you can find some clips on YT of the late great All Black Jonah Lomu, you won’t regret it.
I was thinking when I watched this video that Jonah Lomu is going to spring up in it in a minute. I remember him scattering England defenders like toys,with one or two of them trying desperately to cling on to him as he steamrollered through them,at the 1995 World Cup.

If you want to really know the brutality of it. In 1986, the All Blacks were playing in France in what is known as the Battle of Nantes. During the match a particular brutal ruck resulted in number
8 Buck Shelford getting his scrotum ripped open. He calmly walked to the sideline, had his testicle popped back in, had his scrotum sewed back up and then walked back out to finish the game as well as losing a few teeth. This is all recorded by the cameraman.
Look you are just starting to understand. I played Rugby when I was youbng. Rugby Union. Thgis is the barberous sport, played by gentlemezn. There are very strict rules to stop us killing each other. What makes this sport special is that all types of physique could parrticipate IF they wanted. In the scrum and the rucks 8 huge mastadons then one little guy in the middle that deals with the ball he is called the Hooker, right you arer confused., Then there is the line, big guys that are fast, then the wingers that are lightr and so fast that they will outrun anyone.
. I was too light for the pack, not fast enough for the wing. I had a special posiotion, Wing Forward. I had two jobs, first in a scrum to add weight on the side then if the enemy got the ball and tried to run round the scrum you hit him, and bit his head off. In the rucks and defense. You defend. I stopped a guy, twice my size with the ball, it nearly broke my back, no joking, My mates piled in to a ruck, that ball was going backwards. After the match I was cheered off of the field by the opponents. That night we drank beer together A LOT.Gentloemen.

in rugby generally guy who play in front number 1 to 8 are tall over 6ft and 210lbs and the half 9 and 10 are the brain of the team and generally more skillfull than the others and the back anr generally the same size of the full back in american foorball i played scrum half in my youth and im 5ft9 and 168lbs and bigge players were juste in front of me and sometime some big guy came visit my backs

Size means nothing in Rugby... Check out Faf de Klerk, he's a smaller Rugby player and he routine takes down giants. It's technical knowledge, a little guy can bounce a big boy with the right step and stiff arm.
Great video rugby union is my game. In the South West and much of England the idea that rugby is a middle class game is nonsense I played with guys who worked in the meat packing plant. It is not a game for softies.

Most of the people who play Rugby don’t even know all the rules…
A lot of that stuff was and still illegal and will result with a red card. Rugby has been cleaned up somewhat. Not allowed to make contact with the head, no arm tackles and leading with the elbow are some of the rules make the game somewhat safer.
Sorry that your first game was England v SA as other than the close score it really wasn't a classic. The only chance England had of winning (which in fairness they almost did) was to play 110% defensive rugby by kicking the ball far into the SA end and hope for a penalty . This weekends final *should* be a much more exciting game between two top of their game attacking teams.
