Hey laura and aaron.. i’m a doctor from india who loves to garden in spare time. Before i found your channel i was mainly interested in houseplants. But when I discovered your channel through your vegetable garden tour, my whole perspective changed. I now have a flourishing vegetable garden with many flowers in my terrace. I discovered your channel last spring after nearly losing my husband and then Covid too. Your joy, encouragement, and positive energy now grace our days. New Gardner in Ohio: Good Morning Laura. I am glad to see the winter sowing project starting. I like to reference what you are doing so I can get a jump start on projects and not fall behind. Thank you 😊
I was literally watching all of your past winter sow videos last night as I was going through my seeds deciding which ones to use! I love getting on here and discovering my garden spidey senses are in sync with yours! 🙌 Soooo excited to get started now!!!! Just a tidbit: Erin @TheImpatientgardener does the sprinkle method with her poppies right on top of the snow around March. It worked like a charm!
I am going to try this. I live in Southern Idaho so I think we have about the same climate. I think I am going to start my calendulas and nasturtium this way. Thank you so much!

Thank you for the joy you bring me each morning😊
I woke up this morning to our first snow of the season here in Virginia! I then thought I wonder if Laura will be doing the winter sowing method this year. I proceeded to make coffee and sat down to watch Garden Answer and boy was I surprised by the title of the video!!!
Hi Laura I did this with you last year and had great success . Thank you . For some of my poppy’s i tried and experiment and used sand . I put the poppy seeds in wet sand compressed . Kind of like a mud pie . Threw them in the snow and Much to my surprise they grew . Sow Happy 😀
This will be my 3rd year winter sowing & I love it!!! I usually plant anywhere from 30-40+ jugs. We are in planting zone 4b, as a precaution due to weather I’ve learned to put a marker on the inside of each jug just in case the weather fades my outer labels. I’ve used all various sorts of containers but my best results have been with the milk/water jugs as they hold more soil & moisture. I usually do multiple plantings according to the cold tolerance of each seed type. My favorite is to plant lavender this way & many of my flowers like Daisys, Scabiosa, Snapdragons, Flowering Kale which I start in Feb. I start all my cabbage family plants this way too. The less hardy seeds like tomatoes, peppers, squash etc. I put out in March. I was skeptical too the first year but I’ve always had good results & this method saves me a ton of space & time.In our area because we get allot of moisture I do sprinkle cinnamon on top of the soil in each container to control fungus plus good drain holes in the bottom are essential. I use a plastic drill bit to create my holes or a hot screw driver will easily melt holes for drainage. Thank you for keeping us inspired, I always learn something new or get creative ideas from your show❣️
I'm in zone 4a so your information is very helpful. It just doesn't feel right to put seeds out side when we are getting -10F highs just now. But I'm going to give it a try. Thanks!
@@michellezimmerman7827 it takes a long time for the tomatoes & peppers to germinate with this method so I usually start those inside under grow lights to get a jump start on them.
You mentioned snapdragons. So they do work using this method? I'm in zone 5b and we usually start them under grow lights, which is a pain. It would be awesome if I can winter sow them.
I'm zone 4 as well (edge of Zone 3) and i would love to know if you do some of the cool weather greens and things this way too? I plan to do some flowers and things, but I'm mostly interested in edibles.
@@beckymeyer1818 yes I have had good luck with snapdragons, scabiosa, allyssum, etc. some more tender ones that I really want I’ll do a partial tray indoors.
Laura, there is an amazing plant I’ve never seen you discuss, Lemon Verbena , I grow it here in Komoka Ontario Canada, zone 6 and it smells heavenly, I grow it in a large pot as it gets quite large , as an annual. Would be a plant to consider for “ the Hartley” as you brush by it it smells so lemony and not an obnoxious lemon smell, check it out!
Beckie, we grow it each year to make a winter tisane comprised of dried lemon grass, lemon verbena, lemon thyme and dried orange peel. Sometimes we add organic black tea. We keep this in an airtight container in the frig. When feeling like we may be coming down with something we brew it up with fresh ginger and honey. Since this has dried lemon grass, it is best to put 1-2T in a twist tied coffee filter (shot of whiskey optional).
I grow it too. When I bring it in the house for the winter it drops leaves and looks pitiful but I know that outside in the summer it gets so strong and healthy. It loves water. It's almost like it's always thirsty. I love the long branches hang down. I often find myself untangling them.
So hard to believe you didn’t want to do videos. You are such a natural. Just think of all the knowledge you have shared with us that otherwise would have been lost. I love the recap videos where you and Aaron discuss things. It’s very helpful. Thanks to both of you and prayers for your beautiful family!
I enjoy my time with you and your family and home everyday. What I really want to know is, where do you get your beautiful coffee mugs?!? The shapes and pretty patterns are envious! Blessings!
Good morning and Happy New Year Laura and all the GA family members!! I’ve been watching my paperwhite bulbs grow in the house with fascination, but now I am ready for the next exciting thing to do in the winter. This video is right on time! My husband laughed when I collected all my water jugs last year and put them in the basement underneath the stairs. Now to go pull the bag out along with my seeds to get started. Happy winter sowing everyone!!! 🌱
I have perennial mountain mint in my garden, Laura you’re going to LOVE it. It is ALWAYS covered in the most beautiful array of pollinators. For me it draws butterflies, swallowtail and monarch, several kinds of bumble bees, humming bird moths, and the most gorgeous iridescent wasps (friendly) I have every seen. I wish I could post a photo. It has precious disc like flowers and it holds its height through the winter. You can smell it as you walk by in the summer without having to brush up on it and it holds itself in a vase for weeks. It doesn’t seem to spread as wildly for me as regular mint and it’s easy to just cut back a big bunch to control it.
Laura, your excitement for seeds made my day. In 4 weeks I can start here, in Netherlands we have last "frost" possible in March... My mind is opening seeds already though 😀
Laura, I love how you test and experiment! I finally tried winter sowing and added toilet paper rolls into the milk jugs so that I have the plant and roots are in their own spot in the milk jugs.
I love this method! Thankful for our communities way of rallying behind each other. Trials and tribulations that are shared are the main reason why I’ve been so brave in my garden. Quick question to everyone… WHO 😂 is hoarding all the eucalyptus seeds? I have looked everywhere and keep coming up with sold out. HELP a girl out? Many blessings everyone. Happy Birthday to your littles in the upcoming weeks!
Great video! Some of those plants look very unique and interesting. I can't wait to see how they do! In addition to showing your seed spreadsheet, a video on how to store and organize seeds would be helpful too!
It snowed here in Virginia, no power for two days and as soon as power came back on I came to watch your videos. Baker Creek is my favorite online store. Adding more things to my list that I appereantly missed 😁.
Thank you for this! I will be planting more seeds for next years garden than I have ever done before and have been wondering how to do the early sown seeds. My self sown seeds (Rudbeckia and snapdragons) I never worry about cause they just drop and come up or I just place seed heads around the garden where I want them. I am experimenting with more variety of seeds especially hummingbird and other pollinator attractors.
I just go to my recycle center and get as many empty jugs as I need. I also just want to say, Bakers Creek catalogs are works of art, and filled with great information.
I actually got excited when she mentioned Bakers Creek. I have had great luck with their seeds especially the Split Second Morning Glory, glorious. Beautiful catalog.
I did nine this year as well!!! Based on your previous experience as this is my first try! I'm so excited because i have way too much ADHD to get my seedlings indoors all the way to planting. Many years I've killed them with negligence or botched hardening off so this has restored my hope! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Laura, I do so enjoy yor videos. Look forward to my coffee with Laura ! Enjoyed many years of gardening, but am now 82 years old, and sharing apartment life with my daughter and family. We've a small deck area for containers, and am grateful for the info you provide. Love, love your beautiful gardens! So enjoy virtual gardening with you! Than you for sharing.
You can also wintersow in Ziplock Baggies propped between raised garden beds using marshmallow sticks for a super compact and perfectly neat and tidy crop. It looks pretty too and is completely reusable. I made a youtube video called "Winter Sowing in Ziplock Baggies" for a full tutorial. Aaron and Laura, I have learned so much about gardening from your channel. Thank you so much for all the work you do!
Good morning Laura. I just wanted to tell you how much you bless not only my days but also the days of my friend Connie. She has rheumatoid arthritis which has grown progressively worse throughout her life. Needless to say she is unable to physically garden but your videos allow her to experience some of the joy just by watching you. Thank you so very much for your sweet spirit and your willingness to let all of us be a part of your beautiful world.
1st time I have commented in the 8 months that I've been watching (very faithfully). Thank you for sharing this one. I had no idea these could be put out like you've said. I am beyond excited as I was going to start my seedlings in my house (and that really takes up too much room). Thanks again for sharing your knowledge...your videos are GREAT!
I planted quite a few containers with perennials. I’ve never tried this before and it’s really exciting! Can’t wait to see what happens. Thank you for the great suggestions and instruction!
Oh my this is the first time our weather actually matches, here in the mid-Atlantic, close to the mountains, we are getting our first snow. And seed starting, especially the winter sowing has been heavy on my mind, currently waiting for my daughter to get me some milk jugs.
We don’t have milk jugs here in Bermuda (milk cartons instead- great for kids mini gardens). There are some water jugs that large but usually just the thin, tall ones. So last year I used those water bottles and Ocean Spray juice bottles. They worked out pretty well and were great for propagating rose and hibiscus cuttings. Our winters are very mild so they ended up being great mini-greenhouses! And the kids loved them!
I have tried this method 2 years in a row with no luck. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong but I'm going to try it again because it just looks so simple and, Laura, yours alway turn out so well. Instead of getting frustrated that I don't have good luck you motivate me to keep on trying. Thank you for always being inspirational!
Good morning and Happy New Year from Monique in Indiana! It is indeed a gorgeous winter wonderland over there and here as well. I love this video! I started my first seedlings in 2021 and was AMAZED at the outcome. Went a little overboard but it was a joy to see everything come to full fruition. You’re so amazing and I love all of your brilliant gardening ideas. Have been following you for several years and am totally looking forward to another year of gardening. ❤️
I’ve grown the cream berry tomatoes two years now. Beautiful addition to a pint of cherry tomatoes! Although I find them to be very thinned skinned and split after rain, so your weather might be perfect!
Hey ya'll, North Florida here. I used the winter sowing method last year. I also started seeds indoors under grow lights. The gallon jug winter sowing method was superior for us. Rain was just right and just watched them grow. Love watching Benjamin and Samantha grow along with your ventures. Glad to watch Aaron in front of the camera too. Not bad to look at!
Laura, I am so excited to see the mix of native wildflowers you will be growing this year! Arrowleaf Balsam root, milkweeds, lupine, gillia, larkspurs! 🤩There truly is nothing better we can do as gardeners to support local wildlife and insects. It will be beautiful to see your landscape support local ecology with a blend of natives, edibles, and ornamentals. I'd love to see how other eastern Oregon native plants like camas, goldenrod, or blanket flower would look in your garden. Very excited to watch the progress!
I love using this method. I have had very good luck with it. I have been afraid to put any in yet because it has been so unusually warm and dry here in North Carolina. Hopefully I will get some started soon. Thanks Laura!
Morning garden peeps 🌞 I just wanted to add that you can do this directly to your garden. Just sow seeds in your soil. & cover with the jugs top. Then there is no transplanting. Saves a step. 🌱😊.
Good morning Laura and Aaron from Ga where it was 80° 2 days ago and now 35° Watching this video and having my coffee and I noticed Laura's nails. At first I thought it was just soil and then I realized they're painted! I thought I hadn't had enough coffee yet 😂
Thank you for talking about Verbascum. I bought seedlings from an herb farmer last year. They were beautiful. I dried the seeds and am going to try growing them. Thank you for the encouragement.
just moved to the city after my first vegetable garden in summer 2021, really going to miss being out there watching my plants grow and harvesting. it brought me so much joy, can't wait to be back in big open spaces in a couple years so I can continue gardening. ❤ thanks for sharing!
I just love starting seeds this way. I have for years and find it so rewarding. One thing worth mentioning about the Baker Creek seeds is that they are heirloom seeds and sometimes don’t have quite the germination rate as hybrid seeds do. I live very close to Baker Creek and have visited and purchased several types of seeds and tubers from them. They really have some nice stuff.
I love the winter sowing method. It really gave me a headstart on my zinnias and snapdragons. Those spoon tomatoes are especially prolific. Be prepared for hundreds of volunteers :)
Somehow when you post a video that I don't think I'm that interested in, you always change my mind. Looks like I'll be gathering milk jugs & going seed shopping!
LOVED watching this. A few take-a-way’s…. I couldn’t help giggle when I saw you wearing shoes other than the normal slip on shoes, then my favorite comment… NATURE IS AMAZING… So true! We moved from the West Coast beach area of California and are now in the lower desert area. Boy there is a learning curve with planting. Dry - hot [120+] and just soooo different. But we are learning - I’m sure this years plants will have some giggles and happy moments.
I found GA this time last year and have enjoyed it much. As I watched you do winter sowing I never considered doing it, but I saw the milkweed you were sowing and changed my mind. I loved your beautiful butterfly garden last summer and my 9 year old grandson decided we most definitely should try that this year! So I will surprise him with the WS of the milkweed (He spends his summers with us in Zone 6 b) and maybe some other plants I can find for the garden. Thanks Laura.
I had great success winter sowing. Your milkweed should come back each year. My showy plants were beautiful! I sold my home so am starting over. Just put out 6 gallon containers and am working on more.
I grew black strawberry tomatoes last year and will again this year. They were gorgeous and so sweet and tasty just eaten direct from the vine. You will love these.
Hi Laura I am so inspired. I just planted Verbena Bampton in a jug. The seeds are so tiny!!! I hope this works for them. I have never seen this plant are garden centers. Thank you for such clear direction.
I did this with my grandkids last January and they really enjoyed it and checking them to see when they started to grow. I am planning to do this again this year and will get going in day or so. Good morning everyone and happy sowing.
I am so tired after the excitement of Thanksgiving and Christmas. I have been wondering if I will have the energy to greet the work and joy of spring. Watching this winter sowing video I'm reminding myself I don't have to do everything at once. Starting with low-maintenance gallon jugs is just the motivation I need to get back on track. That and the sparkle in your eyes as you showed us the “how too” and the new varieties. Love watching your videos with such a variety of content. Thank you for sharing you knowledge and your enthusiasm.
Hi. Jane here. Thanks for the extra tips on winter sowing. I tried once before and it wasn't a success because I put everything out in Feb. Now I know that was too early for them. Also I don't think my jugs' soil was moist enough. So I will try again. Thanks for the helpful tutorial. I just received my seeds yesterday from "Le Jardin du Gourmet". I have been buying from them for years. I am going to start my perennial flower and herbs seeds now.🌱
Hi! Last year I grew Dr. Wychees and Blue cream berries. Both super easy to grow and delicious!! I bought the strawberry tomato seed too a few weeks ago! cant wait to start these.
WS drain holes tip… I use my ice pick! But don’t ram it against the container, it’ll just bounce off. Just press it against the plastic until it pokes through. So, so easy!
I love that you are using baker creek seeds! I live very close to the original baker creek ! Thanks for the Info! I have been garden for over 50 years…
I started my first winter sowing method seeds this winter a couple weeks ago! I am so excited trying it out! I never would have know an ounce about gardening if it wasn’t for your videos! You truly make a huge difference in the world and we all love you all!
I just got a Baker creek order today too and was starting to wash my winter sowing jugs. Perfect timing! We liked the Spoon tomato last year. The plant got huge!
The snow covering is very beautiful! Even though it's not my favorite I still like to see it especially when I have no place to go😁you express so much enthusiasm in your videos, making your inspiration that much more pleasant! ❤️👏🙂
Omg my parents lived in South America for awhile. We moved back when I was 8. When you showed that snail vine I almost cried! I adored those. I will definitely be placing an order with bakers creek soon! Funny how sentimental we can be about random objects.
This summer please do a taste test video on all the different varieties of tomatoes!!! I know you love hearing it so I will tell you again… you truly inspire me in my garden, and in life. I love watching anything you do! 🥰
Winter sowing in jugs is wonderful, even plants that you shouldn't winter sow do ok. I planted black eyed susans in jugs last winter.. they grew to about 1 or 2 inches tall then stopped growing. They didn't die, just sat there waiting.... once weather got better, they took off in the jugs and were very successful at maturity! Nature is wonderful
This video satisfies my cravings to get all the things planted, ready for the end of January when I start my seeds indoors especially after stocking up on seed packs here and there all last season. Thanks 😊

Nothing better than watching gardeners going through seed packets. And yes, the better the package photography the harder they are to resist.
I second what Beckie said. It’s also great to cut a few stems and put them in bathrooms, especially if you have boys.
This makes me excited for seed starting season, this gives me the motivation and something to look forward to in a couple weeks.
Good morning! This is a great video for me today. It was 68 yesterday and today it is snowing like mad and we are expecting 8 inches of snow
Wow, what a great variety of things! Can’t wait to watch these grow. Especially interested to se black tomatoes!💚💚💚
“Isn’t that cool!!” Laura your enthusiasm is infectious!!
The snow looks beautiful on your property! Great method for winter planting!
I just go to my recycle center and get as many empty jugs as I need. I also just want to say, Bakers Creek catalogs are works of art, and filled with great information.
My neighbor showed me the Baker Creek print catalog, and it is a work of art. Can’t wait to try some of these.
Thank you for sharing! Great idea 😊
Good morning everyone!
Great instruction, thanks 😊 here's a thought, maybe add a date on the containers.
I saw it! I’m going to try it !
Happy New Year and Good Morning from New Jersey GA friends and family!
❤ Love ❤ watching winter sowing videos🥰🥰🥰
I planted quite a few containers with perennials. I’ve never tried this before and it’s really exciting! Can’t wait to see what happens. Thank you for the great suggestions and instruction!
great idea. Never done this. I will surely have to give this a try next time. Love it, thank you.
I just posted my winter sowing update video. Absolutely loving this growing technique!
Watched the video. Immediate inspiration for Spring! Love Baker Creek seeds. They have interesting varieties and good rate of germination.
Good evening Laura & Aaron & Hello Groupies☺️Happy New Year to all❤️🇵🇭
I remember my great grandmother planting seeds and roses in the ground under a gallon jar.
Terrific how-to video!!! Thank you so much for this budget friendly easy winter sowing project 💜 🪴
I love using this method. I have had very good luck with it. I have been afraid to put any in yet because it has been so unusually warm and dry here in North Carolina. Hopefully I will get some started soon. Thanks Laura!
Oh Laura, I’m heading to my seeds right now. You officially inspired the start my growing season. Thank you! ❤️
Morning garden peeps 🌞 I just wanted to add that you can do this directly to your garden. Just sow seeds in your soil. & cover with the jugs top. Then there is no transplanting. Saves a step. 🌱😊.
What state and Zone are you in?
Do you do this every winter?
Do share!!!!
Sherry-Knoxville (Zone 7)
You can but the problem I see is that all your seedlings are clumped together or you have to have so many more jugs.
@@michellescountrygardens23 Maybe try the small water bottles? I'm gonna give it a shot.
How do you get them to stay in the ground? The jugs I mean?
In my area the mice find them in winter! Seeds direct sown end up eaten up.
We in western WA are thrilled to be done with our week of snow. Glad snow makes you happy. Now we can watch our bulbs come up.
Another new day and learning about seedlings while I drink my English cuppa is just magic just sent a message out to friends keep your milk cartons.
Ah Laura, I couldn't help but giggle at you looking at those seeds. Your excitement is contagious, I can't wait for this year too!
just moved to the city after my first vegetable garden in summer 2021, really going to miss being out there watching my plants grow and harvesting. it brought me so much joy, can't wait to be back in big open spaces in a couple years so I can continue gardening.
I love your seeds videos. Because of Garden Answer, growing flowers from seeds is my new passion!
Hi Laura
I am so inspired.
As a purveyor of fine Tupperware, I approve of your usage of your Thatsa Bowl! 😁😁😁😁
RUNNING to Baker Creek seeds right now! Buying seeds for us and all of my friends! Thank you for the motivation Laura! We love all you do.
Omg I bought the pink dandelions too!!!! I cant wait to try them out
WS drain holes tip… I use my ice pick! But don’t ram it against the container, it’ll just bounce off. Just press it against the plastic until it pokes through. So, so easy!
Oh dang! Is it time to winter sow? I’m gonna be late 😂🤣🌱
Thank you for explaining in such detail , winter sowing seeds, I have wanted to try sowing seeds, this seems so easy, thank you so much.
Thanks 😊
