As a young kid, I grew up in a Church of Christ in southern Kentucky. Our congregation only sang songs without the use of any musical instruments. It was called "singing your praises to the lord". My grandfather passed when I was 15 in 1977, and he had requested our church members sing this song at his funeral. Still difficult today for me to hear this song without tearing up.
The song is so exquisitely rendered that it enters your soul and doesn't leave.Iris Dement is an artist of the first rank who truly gets us where we truly live. The epic journey to get Mattie to safety at the end, accompanied by just the music itself tears at the heart.
I love the way the theme starts out as a mere suggestion in the beginning of the film, a lone, slow piano with just a phrase of the melody here and there. More and longer interludes are heard behind key scenes until, at the end, the whole thing, lyrics, piano and that haunting voice arrive in a final crescendo of strangely joyous melancholy.
I just lost my Daddy in October. When I was a child he was the song leader in our small country church. This was one of his favorite hymns. I can see him, clear as day, singing this beautiful song. It is the most touching, beautiful version I've ever heard & I've yet to watch the movie without crying at the end. The movie, the song, it's all perfect & very special to me. Makes me feel like he's still here with me.
Loved this hymn at the end of True Grit. I'd thought it was sung by Jailer Steinfield, but apparently it's by Iris Dement. It called to me also. Lovely old hymn.
I honor your father.... The wonderful memories I of childhood church song service.... The sounds of choir voices echoing off old wood floors and walls, sunlight drifting thro' stained glass.... holding onto my dad's trouser leg, watching the song leader lifting his arms to guide us.... I'm grateful for men like your father..... 🕊️✝️
There's a church in the valley by the wildwood No lovelier place in the dale No spot is so dear to my childhood As the little brown church in the vale...
@@barbaramelvin294 We use to sing this at our church in suburban Melbourne,Victoria Australia,.Many of those who sang it then now singing it in the Presence of the One with the Everlasting Arms
Maybe the greatest voice in music today. Watched the movie yesterday and when this started I said to my wife, "this is Iris Dement, right" (we named our daughter Iris, in part after Iris Dement) and then we both knew we'd like the movie even more because of it.
I just re-watched this movie, and it still is amazing in my eyes. I can only get through about 20 seconds of this song until I start getting misty eyed
I cried at the end of True Grit when this sing began to play as Mattie was walking from the marshal's grave, it's sad that she was not able to speak with him after their journey together, alas a truly spectacular movie, one that will live on in history forever.
This hymn makes the perfect theme for Mattie. Its lyrics can show how Mattie finds her courage and avenges her father's death by leaning on both her faith in God and her trust in her new companions. Wonderful movie.
"Leaning on the everlasting arms"...a song I hadn't heard since I was a little boy in Missouri. What a great song for this movie...we have all needed some strong arms to lean on at some time or another in our life...reminds me of my grandpa...not to mention the awesome southern twang this singer uses....love it...reminds me of some very fond memories I have gathered around tje piano with my mom as a kids. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!!!
For me, it was " In the Garden " with us kids singing while my Grandmother Allison played the piano. I watched TRUE GRIT, started to leave, then Iris began singing this, and I couldn't make myself leave the theater...it was love and memory and the sweetness of an old lady's faith that made me sit there.
I love this song so am dedicating this song to my mum because she was a choir member and always sings when she was a live. l love you mum forever u are in my heart.
I love both versions of True Grit! I would not even watch the remake until last week. I never really saw a remake that did justice to the original. And, The Duke was in the original. Case closed. But after seeing the remake twice now I was wrong. Both are excellent! Jeff Bridges was awesome as Rooster as was the whole cast. Both movies gets an A++ for being well done and for being so much fun to watch--and what more can you ask for?
God bless you all whom created this movie ,and you Iris ,your Voice representing all fell ,just to create the Free Nation of the United States of America. This the true Spirit of the Pioneers sacraficed their lives past and present. Luv Andrew from Australia

+Lorenzo Russo I'm sure he is in a better place now with jesus and God and god bless your soul ill remember in my prayers and I'm sorry for your loss just remember God is good all the time, all the time God is great love you brother
I dare to disagree, yes this remake was cast well, and directed to portray the original. But in no way is it better then the original True Grit with John Wayne in the lead role. I liked them both equally, but the duke just had a way with his westerns.
I totally agree that the remake is a better movie but you simply can’t replace the significant presence and impact the duke had on screen with that being said I enjoy the remake so much more, the ending the story telling and the dialogue is fantastic
I agree John Wayne's version is sophomoric, at the very best compared to The Coen Brothers. I am old enough I can remember my grandfather, great Uncles, and all talking almost exactly like they did in the Court Room scene. And I know from these old guys that it was rough as hell back then. And this was set in eastern Oklahoma, and it is rough now. John Wayne was never really an actor but a Movie star. That is why a lot of people love him so, they want a hero and he played that well. He was nearly the same in almost every roll. Just watched Liberty Valance, the same thing. However, I think that was the best western he appeared it. But not because of him but because of Lee Marvin. Watch this courtroom scene. ua-cam.com/video/e7jggCcfyjE/v-deo.html
@@johnnysalter7072 Excellent clip, thanks for the link. I've never seen the re-make; I'll need to find it. I thought John Wayne was brilliant in the original but his replacement in this version is a hero of mine.👍👌😁 I found this clip in a roundabout way, trying to learn a bit more about this beautiful song; I'm glad I did.👌
At the end of the movie you're in awe and thinking how can a movie be this good. Then this song starts. Seriously, what a magnificent song to end an excellent movie. The Coen brothers really outdid themselves on this one.
I could say so much of the movie and this song. I will simply say in these beautiful lyrics from Iris I hear my grandmother singing this song to me so long ago. She's gone 29 years this December. I can only weep...
I can agree that this is one of the greatest westerns ever, even better than the original IMHO. but there are other westerns that are at least as good. once upon a time in the west, the dollars trilogy, unforgiven. I will agree that none are better than these though.
This is beautiful music and the book fights with The Great Gatsby in my heart as my favourite of all time. Totally satisfying lyrical poetic and inspiring simple and poignant.
I should not relate to this song at all really. Im a 25 year old Englishman, with no experience in country music, its not even part of my culture...So...Why is this so awesome? I cant stop listening to it! Movie was amazing too.
Stop for a moment. Listen to the words of this song. I dont know anyone else on here. I dont know your personal beliefs. I dont know your backgrounds, or where you were born. What I do know is this song offers something to those who believe. This song offers comfort, just like it has offered me comfort at times in my life, when I have lost those I care about. Times when mistakes I had made put me in a position that all I had left was those everlasting arms of God. So stop, and listen.
Reminds me of my grandmother and great-aunt, on a long car ride across western Oklahoma when I was a child, singing hymns. I was lucky to have them in my life.
@rooster1113 It is one of my favourite Gospel Songs. Anthony Showalter and Elisha Hoffman were the composers. Very well done and glad they put this in the movie.
Thank you Iris, Jeff, Hailee, Josh, Matt and Coen Bros. for the excellent remake of the John Wayne, Kim Darby, Glenn Campbell, Robert Duvall classic. Good on ya mate and good on y'all.

Few movie remakes are better than the original, but this is the exception. Great acting, and a inspired soundtrack, especially Iris' singing.
Yes, True Grit was a good movie, but it was this song at the end that just grabbed me. Fantastic, that's all I can say.
I sang this in church many years ago
Bill P i know what you mean....that scenario of a grave under a lonesome tree w/the background song gave me goose bumps.
Sometimes the songs at the ending credit seem to define the movie and this was one of those for me
Great song to finish that compelling movie. One of my favorite Coen Brothers films.
Iris Dement is a pure joy to listen to.
I love to hear Iris sing, she has a truly inspiring and powerful voice.
The movie, the song and Iris's voice are a marriage of three wonderful elements
I love the way the theme starts out as a mere suggestion in the beginning of the film, a lone, slow piano with just a phrase of the melody here and there. More and longer interludes are heard behind key scenes until, at the end, the whole thing, lyrics, piano and that haunting voice arrive in a final crescendo of strangely joyous melancholy.
Beautiful song one of my favorite hymns and a great movie loved it
I personally love Iris's voice. Each to their own. Live and Let Live.

Great job Iris. Beautiful song sung by a great singer!!!
Absolutely a wonderful song, I have heard it all of my life. The movie was as great as the original. And the song fit the movie .Great!!
her final monologue in the last few minutes is the best part of the film.
Loved Iris in "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms", beautiful.
Iris DeMent's voice just frickin' slays me with its unbelievable beauty! And this old hymn was perfectly placed in this wonderful movie!
Iris Dement has such a unique quality to her voice - it's so expressive. I just love listening to her.
I've loved her voice ever since I herd her sing with John Prime! It's just so unique!
Man what a great song, her voice really puts the hook into your heart.
at the ending scene, when the voice raised, i got goosebum

The way she sings sounds "old fashioned." I almost feel like I am in a 19th century church listening to this.:)
I cry everytime I listen to this. Iris sings with such emotion.
No negative reviews of a film speaks to how many souls are touched. The Hymn, Iris Dement's voice, the cast and the Coen Brothers skill win
Sorry for your loss I lost my father years ago. I haven't been the same since but I look at my son's. And 🙏 see him in there eyes. God bless you

The fact that the entire show features old hymns was very unique. This song in particular, was a good closing for the movie!

This is a great version of this classic hymn.
Such a great, uniquely American voice.

Very rare that a remake is as good as the original movie, In this case it might even be better than the original. All were excellent actors
