- Lisa Gade reviews the Nokia Lumia 635, a very affordable Windows 8.1 smartphone. The Lumia 635 is remarkably inexpensive: we look at the T-Mobile version that sells for $168 full retail ($129 on Microsoft's store), and AT&T also offers a GoPhone version for just $99. The phone has a 4.5" IPS display running at 854 x 480 resolution and the quad core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 CPU with 512 megs RAM and 8 gigs of internal storage. The phone has a removable back and battery, a microSD card slot compatible with cards up to 128 gigs and a rear 5MP camera. Other features include 4G LTE, single band WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0 and a GPS with GLONASS.

+Harold-Sweat-Head "low end" phones are usually 512 MB of ram, while the ICON and higher end windows phones have 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM. Makes a huge difference with apps and games, not so much with just normal operations and media.

Everyone's hating on this phone but forget its a budget device. Don't want 512mb on ram? Get a higher end device with 2 gigs of ram don't look back at this phone. No front facing camera? Get one that does, don't look back at this phone. No flash? Get one that does. If you don't like it then move on, what you say isn't gonna stop microsoft/nokia from making phones, and its not gonna stop people from buying it either.

Lisa, I'm considering this phone, moving away from my Lumia 520. The main reason is because I'm experiencing a ton of lag since I updated to 8.1. It's driving me crazy. Does the 635 experience any lag similar to 520 or was it built to work well with 8.1? Thanks so much!
I had this phone for a year and I was actually quite sad to let it go. It was a solid phone and I loved it. Biggest drawbacks would be the lack of apps and front camera.

Good review as usual and I have been reading the comments. The front facing camera is a glaring omission seeing that MSFT sells Lync Online and now own Skype which are meeting tools.
I've had this phone for a few days. I sense a lack of enthusiasm in this review, which makes sense because this phone is the definition of adequate. But that's what I expected, I got tired of waiting for a Lumia with FFC and flash. I would definitely recommend the 635, but you need to be realistic. I hope there is wide availability of the 720 replacement.

I'm from Argentina, and economy as well product availability is as sad you imagine. I just got my Lumia 635, and paid $120 for it (locked under contract), buying it directly from the carrier (extremely common thing here). The Moto G 2014 LTE (usual to-go-device here, recommended for its value) is $450+ (carrier locked under contract as well). WP devices are doing extremely well over here, and you should now get an idea of why that is the case.

I just got this phone as a temporary solution for a broken iPhone until my upgrade time (and new releases) in October. I paid $25 for the AT&T go phone at WalMart on clearance and had at&t put a regular sim in it, since my iPhone was running a nano sim. Do I love it? No. Do I love Windows? Not even a little. But it is a good temporary solution for me and I appreciate Nokia and Windows for making an affordable smartphone.

I love this phone. I had a Galaxy S 2 and it's fine and all, but i am not buying a new galaxy.....Galaxy and Iphone are the same, each of them ditch out new phones not even 2 years after the new one.....I wanted something different. :)

same here im on the gakaxy s2 on boost mobile and have been since jan 2013 i wouldnt mind switching to a windows phone to try something different but this phone doesnt make me want to give up my s2 so ill wait for a better windows phone to come out on boost
My 635 won't stay at a website longer than 3 minutes then goes back to icon page. No wifi. Any assistance is appreciated.
Google chrome is availble from store for this phone. Also why did you not enable third row for this phone, makes the tiles look more better also!

third tile row makes them really tiny, I have a Lumia 925 w/ 4,5" Screen. When I enable third row, the tiles shrink down to much.

Since it doesn't have a proximity sensor does the screen shutoff while on a call so that you don't accidentally press a key? Thanks

I think a major downfall with Windows phone is not being able to use Google Chrome and the UA-cam app is horrible.
Well the UA-cam apps wouldn't be horrible if Google didn't purposely withhold and official one *glares*
I really tried to like Windows phone, I really did, my Nokia Lumia 920 sits in my dresser drawer as a reminder of nice hardware meets software that Microsoft developed to a "point" and said, "that's good enough".... Still the 920 is a great phone...incredible call quality and one amazing camera.
Aharon Lowenstein, yes your right, I wish this Microsoft / Google Cold War would end already, together they could work really well together. I think it's the Bing vs. Google search engines that really keep them at odds with one another..
You can try third party apps, such as MetroTube or myTube. I think they surpass the official app (on Android or iOS) in many ways. Yes, the lack of official apps can be a problem (although most of them are in the marketplace), but the WP8 community is amazing, and third party options are truly great.

Nice review, but missing a few details. Snapdragon 400 is on the Moto G. The E has a dual core 200...very low end processor.
People expecting waaay too much for $100. There's no comparison at that price point, which the closest devices are LG L70 and Moto E (both much slower and no LTE). Not sure why Microsoft doesn't release the 735 in the US yet at $199. Think that's much more competitive with the Moto G, especially as a camera phone.

I'm so on the fence about this.. I think it sounds like a really cool phone (especially for the price, $50 at Walmart, dang!!) and I am in the market for a new smartphone but I can't get past the fact that there's no front facing camera
What the difference from T-Mobile form AT&T? Nokia lumia635
Bit of a weird question but for anyone that owns this phone, when using the headphone jack does the connector fully click in as, with mine, my headphones do not fully click in and leave the top bit of the connector exposed. Whilst it still plays it will disconnect with a slight movement and I don't want to force the connection. Not sure if this is just me but any feedback would be appreciated :)
What's the difference between a GoPhone and normal?
AT&T GoPhone is a pre-paid service rather than contract post-paid.
+RAOM RAOM nothing what so ever, the normal phones are usually bought under contract or something. The go-phones are just a prepaid versions of that same device for people who do not want to buy their phone with a 96 year contract attached to it.
+MobileTechReview Lisa, I LOVE this device! While it does have its share of problems, two aspects of this device make me truly love it. #1. The Battery Life is excellent!
2. Unlike Android Devices, this device allows you to place everything on your MICRO SD MEMORY CARD. Those are the two reasons why I could never see myself ever parting with my Nokia Lumia 635 (Virgin Mobile Version). I have even thought about purchasing the Boost Mobile Version of the Nokia Lumia 635 too. I wouldn't mind owning both versions. Now, I could not just use the Lumia 635 and nothing else. My Primary Device is a Samsung Galaxy S4 (Boost Mobile Version). I am thinking about placing my pictures on the Lumia 635. That way, I could save some space on my S4. Now, I know that you have access to DropBox; Photos; Drive; etc. I just thought about texting my pictures over to the Lumia 635. Then, on those applications, I can delete those pictures.
+MobileTechReview The Windows App Store is EXTREMELY WEAK! However, I am not much of an Apps person anyway. Of course, I have multiple Apps on my S4. I am comfortable with just what I have. Due to the weakness of the Windows App Store, a lot of people will not even touch a Windows Device. I sure wish that both Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile would add more Windows Devices to their rosters.

I just got this phone recently,and every time I try to sign in to my hotmail/facebook account a banner pops out saying that there's an error/needs better reception. My wifi is connected though. Does anyone else have or had this problem who owns Nokia Lumia 635?
Love the phone. After seeing Apple just rinse and repeat and change to be more like Android and not be original with their own OS, I needed a switch and this phone has more than succeeded my expectations and I like how fresh everything feels for me. Resizing of tiles, I can now add external storage, live tiles, and among other things of course. Microsoft's windows phones really go unnoticed and its a shame, really it is.

Joe shickler Lack of useful apps is what keeps me from getting one. Apps like chrome, youtube, obd pro, and others aren't in the windows store. But the store is getting more apps every time I look at it. It's just not getting the ones people want.
I love this phone a lot. Got it for less than $70, and it is amazing. Facebook works nice, it's a fast phone and it has what I need. I'm not a selfie person, and I carry a large SD card for memory. This is my first windows phone after going with a iPhone and plenty of Androids in the past, and I prefer this one. Not to mention, Cortana is fun to talk about Halo with.

I own this phone and I gotta say that after buying 3 iphones I'll never spend $500 bucks on a stupid smart phone ever again! I got this baby for $49.99 at my local walmart, it was selling as a AT&T prepaid device. This phone syncs with cloud for back ups. Keeps all of your apps, data and contacts in your cloud if you have it set. If your clumsily like me and your constantly breaking phones or just generally hard on them, then this is a GREAT phone!! The windows 10 update was a little buggy but aside from that I cannot complain. The games are just as good, if not better then iphones and androids because it's open source so you will get tons of games from third parties alot of PC game developers as well! Mass Effect and Max Payne run like a dream! I mostly only play retro roms on mine like Super Mario World and Final Fantasy. This phone has never let me down as far as using it as a phone and for a little entertainment here and there! Do keep in mind that there are a lot of BAAAD developers for windows phone apps, so if you download an app that keeps crashing don't blame the phone, blame the developer ;)

I took pictures with the Nokia and an IPhone 5C in a low lit bar. The Nokia pictures came out significantly better. Amazing with out a flash. To me the biggest feature is LTE. Tmo is migrating bandwidth and its an absolute necessity to have an LTE phone. Tmo charges full boat retail for its LTE phones. This is the best deal around. The voice quality is IMO one of the best. I went into the AT&T store and tried every phone for voice quality and Nokia came out on top.
Great phone for the price, the UA-cam app works fantastic after I had transferred it to sandisk. Its love the fluid and speed it offers!

almost done on my contract for 710 (almost same with 635 except for the upgraded OS and SD card slot), works surprisingly fine until now except for lack of apps and random shutdowns. it does still suffice my needs, tbh.
but i'm not sure if i'd renew. i find it impractical. so i plan to go prepaid and not get any high-end wp8 phones. but it would be very tempting if 930 arrives on my phone carrier soon. ugh!

Nice. But why no dedicated camera button? why no waterproof? why no 5-connector stereo-mic jack?
What I find strange is all these things cost pretty much nothing to make. Maybe the phone would cost $10 more to make, but for this small price change would blow any low budget Android phone away! If Windows wants to get its phone OS out now, it must grab any occasion to make easy/cheap upgrades to hardware. Oh and adding a LED beside the camera to have flash would cost $1 or $2

Yep you're right, it's on the higher end Nokias (weirdly) that you can't change the battery, so you can only watch your expensive phone get weaker and weaker with time. But on the 635 you can change it so that's a nice advantage over the other ones.

Only the 1GB version will get updated to Win 10, sadly the 512mb version will stay on win 8.1 forever

I like this phone. I would want similar phone with all the 900 line features. The very good of old nokia phones were changeable cover and finally these 500 and 600 line smart phones have this, but not all the great features. I need this shell and those great features. My wife also likes this as she can buy like 6 shells and paint them and do things with them.
