  • In this video I show my current dress shoe collection and describe each shoe, it's purpose and style, as well as what I actually paid for each shoe. In the video I was stating the prices from my memory. I was wrong about what I paid on a few of them, and I forgot to state what I paid for the last pair in the video, so here is a list of the shoes shown in the video:
    1. Vintage burgundy Bostonian (1980's?) Penny Loafer - $12 thrift find
    2. Tan Bostonian loafers (I put on a custom Patina) -$69 JC Penny's (I think)
    3. Black Bostonian wingtip tassel loafers - $79 Macy's
    4. Burgundy Bostonian wingtip tassel loafers - $12 thrift
    5. Black Allen Edmonds MacNeil longwing derby - $25 eBay
    6. Tan Florsheim Castellano Wing Ox - $109 - Shoe Depot
    7. Black Florsheim Imperial Algonquin toe derby - $9 thrift
    8. Brown Principe woven leather derby - $12 thrift
    9. Black Principe woven leather derby - $50 eBay
    10. Walnut Allen Edmonds Shreveport woven derby - $50 eBay
    11. Oxblood Allen Edmonds McAllister wingtip Oxford - $245 Allen Edmonds store in Woodmere
    12. Black Allen Edmonds Hastings wholecut Oxford - $40 or $50 from a friend that bought them from eBay but were too wide for him.
    13. Brown Johnston & Murphy Melton cap toe Oxford - $46 eBay
    14. Black Allen Edmonds Park Avenue cap toe Oxford - $27 eBay
    Here is an updated (& better quality) video, "My Allen Edmonds Collection 2020":

    I was a Bostonian shoe wearer for years until they stopped selling quality shoes, then Johnston and Murphy until 2018. I am now an Allen Edmond's shoe wearer, with two pairs, Randolph Penny Loafer and a Cap Toe Oxford, purchased last week, and I enjoy them. You do an excellent job with your reviews, and I appreciate your sharing of personal thoughts and experiences with footwear. I just recently came across your channel.

    I have 32+ pairs of AE shoes, (I wear a 10EEE) from both brown and black spectator summer shoes to suede long wings, to split bit suede loafers, and my favorites; my shell cordovan "Cambridge"wingtips. They are without doubt the finest shoes available on the market today!
    When I buy a new pair of AE I have the Vibram half sole added, and a 1" steel tap put on the toe. My shoes last almost a lifetime. They all look new, and I have recommended them throughout the years to many in my firm. You cannot go wrong with Allen Edmond's...Johnston Murphy doesn't even come close, and Florsheim's not even in the game! You will NEVER be sorry you spent a bit more to stand out!

      Milt Keller 32 pairs 😳 I’m both impressed and envious!! 👊🏼 I completely agree, AEs are far better, as you stated. The reason I posted this video though is there are already PLENTY of other videos online of people showing their massive shoe collections (ie Kirby Allison from The Hanger Project) that include $2,000 bespoke shoes, and that’s fun to watch & dream about, but 95% do not have the means for that. I wanted to show what’s possible for almost ANYONE at almost ANY income level, that is willing to put in some effort. Most can not afford a $700 pair of Shell Cordovan shoes. Many can not even afford a $425 (or $297 on sale) pair of new calfskin AEs, but almost anyone can do what I did here and look decent.

    Enjoyable video, thanks. I had not worn a pair of dress shoes since my Father's funeral 20 years ago. They were classic dark brown wing tips, I think they were Florsheim. I looked for them a month ago and couldn't find them. I went to eBay and became more informed about brands. I saw many very nice Allen Edmonds shoes, different styles, new and pre-worn. I found a nice pair of Cole Haan dress wing tip oxfords that were very similar to my misplaced shoes. I paid $29 plus shipping. They fit like a glove, very little wear on the sole, beautiful leather uppers. I also began looking for other casual shoes that I wear more often. I bought a couple pairs of Skechers. One was new, sold as pre-owned, very comfortable and a bargain, the other was a slip-on, well made and comfortable. I need to check out my local Goodwill to see what they have.

    Actually, that “long wing” is called a Balmoral, named after Balmoral Castle. Balmorals are typically in boots, but occasionally oxfords are also done in the Balmoral style, especially by Allan Edmonds.

    Thank you for the shoe collection tour. I am a big fan of Allen Edmond and have about ten pairs, all bought new, some on sale. I also like AE boots, especially in wet and snowy weather. I live in Minnesota. You can imagine what I mean by wet and snowy. On the AE boots, I have Dainite rubber and lug soles. I have two pairs of Johnston and Murphy boots, which I like. I tend to wear mostly boots from fall till spring. On a personal note, I find your videos informative and interesting. I applaud your eye for a bargain pair of quality shoes and your "do it yourself" recrafting.

      @@CobblerBob Thank you for your reply. I already watched that video and gave it a thumbs up. You are really helping a lot of people that want good shoes and may not have the budget for them. You demonstrate it is possible to buy a used pair of shoes for $25 and then recraft them for about another $25. When you're done, you essentially have a pair of shoes in excellent condition for a small fraction of what it costs to buy them new. Have you considered doing something similar with leather briefcases? I know you have a video on belts.

    A really decent shoe collection! I have about 10 pairs of shoes in my own collection right now. In addition to my English shoes (Cheaney, Tricker's, Churchs, Barker, etc), I also have 4 pairs of AE which I got when I just started buying decent shoes. I'd say their value is almost unmatchable if you can get them as factory seconds or on eBay. Since I live in Montreal and am personally not a fan of protective oversoles, I also have five pairs of British country boots with rubber soles, and they have served me well.
    Also Bob, I have to give you credit for polishing your shoes so well. I personally also polish my own shoes regularly with Saphir products, but it seems I just can't get the same result.

    Longwings by default are Bluchers not Derbies, the difference is minimal but a Derby has the lacing system coming back down to the sole, whereas the Blucher is only around the top and down the front for the laces. Good video and collection.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  5 років тому

      Stephen Funk - not really. When I polish them, I do see some “extra” polish between the weaves, but I make sure to brush them in multiple directions with the horse hair brush, and that gets rid of the extra polish. I just make sure not to wear them in the wet weather too.

    Is Florsheim a good buy? Was thinking in getting a loafer from them? What's your thoughts on the company? Thanks and keep up the great content 👍

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  5 років тому +1

      UnboxingMania - one of my very early videos is a review of the Florsheim Castelano Wing Ox (warning: the production/video quality is extremely poor, but the content is good). That shoe was a $130 full retail price, it usually sells for around $109. It appears to have a Goodyear Welted soul, but it’s NOT - it’s actually a fake stitch, so it’s a bonded (glues) on fake leather sole. The uppers are full grain leather though, which is good. So the uppers are good quality materials, but the construction quality is not so good relative to a Goodyear Welted shoe. I still wear those shoes after three plus years, they’re still holding up, but one of the shoes squeaks. I believe some of the glue is coming undone.
      I’ve never owned their current “Imperial” line (Kenmoor models), but the full retail price is $225, and they have true Goodyear Welted leather soles. I don’t know where they’re sourcing the leather from, I would guess at that price point they are constructed overseas. Sounds appealing, but if I could wait and find an Allen Edmonds on sale for $250-$300, I would probably buy the AE vs a $225 Florsheim. But if the $225 Florsheim Kenmoor goes on sale to $175… I would probably try it out.
      Then they also have their lower price shoes which would probably retail for $60 and up which will be lower quality correctrd grain leather & typical glued on rubber soles. They won’t last.

    • @VWbobby94
      @VWbobby94 5 років тому

      @@CobblerBob Wow thanks for the Information!! Yeah I saw on their website and the Kenmoor looks really awesome and it does indicate that the construction is goodyear welt. Thanks again for the info, this will help me in my decision of getting the pair of Loafers or maybe wait and save up more for an Allen Edmonds. 👍

    How do those MacNeils (7 last) fit compared to the PA's (5 last)? A discontinued shoe model I'm interested in eventually having is the Hale in Walnut, which was on the 7 last. I know I'm somewhere between a 10.5 E and an 11 D in a PA, so is the fit more wide or narrow (or longer or shorter) on the MacNeils compared to the PAs? Also, which has the roomier instep? I know everyone's feet are different, but if it's a bigger fit on the 7 last than the 5, especially if it's the instep that's bigger on the 7, I know I'll have to try a smaller size than I would with a shoe made on the 5 last. I don't want to have to put insoles in any more pairs like I did with my Byrons (which was due to the instep being too high despite the length and width being right on for the most part).
    Yeah, I could just go with a used pair of Strands in Walnut in either a 10.5 E or an 11 D, especially since those appear much more frequently on eBay, but I really like the more subdued broguing on the Hales better.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  5 років тому

      Matt W - great question! I’m not sure how helpful my info will be, because The only shoes that I own on the 97 last are 2 pairs of MacNeils and 2 pairs of Sanfords, and all of those are Derbies. I have a pair of Shreveports, a woven leather derby on the 65 last. I have a high instep, and the derby on the 65 has more room than the Park Avenue or 5th Ave Oxfords on the same 65 last. So in other words, it seems to me that everything else being equal, a Derby has more room because it has more adjustability in the instep.
      That being said, I think the 97 might be more accommodating to people with wide feet. It seems like the toe shape is more rounded, and less pointed as viewed from above than the 65. My biggest challenge in fitting shoes being an 11-1/2 2e or 3e is not just the width of the shoe across the ball of the foot, but having enough room for my pinky toe. My ideal size in both the 97 and 65 last is 11.5 3e.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  6 років тому +5

      mydogskips2 I love to learn! I’ve been really into shoes for probably 3 years now. As far as polishing shoes, lots of experience. Not just my shoes, but I’ll take home shoes of guys at the office or friends and polish them, etc for them. Usually I’ll do it for Chipotle. I also frequent thrift stores... I have written down in my phone the shoe size of several friends that are expanding their shoe collection, so I’m always looking at shoes and buying them cheap and shining them up and looking up info on them.
      Learning to cobble new Top Lifts (heels) was a huge learning curve. It literally took me months of searching until I was able to find a store (Landwerlen Leather in Indianapolis) that would sell heeling leather and rubber:
      1. That was the correct thinness
      2. Would sell to me, the public
      3. Wasn’t a jerk to me bc I was an amateur.
      But I persisted. I was even emailing companies in England looking for the correct 5mm thick rubber leather heels, but they were so expensive to be shipped from England.
      As far as learning about shoe construction, great sources are:
      Kirby Allison’s The Hangar Project
      Justin from The Shoe Snob
      David has a great Vintage shoe website www.vcleat.com
      Short answer is become obscessed!!

      mydogskips2 Also, I used to paint cars and do bodywork and even have rebuilt Oldsmobile V8 smallblock and bigblock engines, and I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, so solving problems and working with my hands is something I’ve done my whole life.
      Another way I learn... I’m not afraid to make a mistake. I did a video where I stripped the surface off a pair of Bostonian loafers and airbrush on a Patina... I had NO idea if it was going to work when I did it. Same thing on the “Restoring terribly salt stained J&Ms” video. I bought a beat up old pair of ugly kilted tassel loafer Allen Edmonds shoes for like $8, and tore them apart just to learn about the inside of a Goodyear Welted shoe (see my “Goodyear Welted shown” video).

      Jay Pendley by around the top I assume you mean around the top of your foot & the foot opening? Versus around the vamp of the shoe? Also, what model of shoe? Derbies give much more adjustment for foot size than Oxfords. But to answer your question, an insole may help, such as Dr. Sholl’s. The insole’s thickness will take up space in the shoe and often will “tighten it up” a little. You can also buy leather insoles, but they’re more expensive so try the cheap foam ones 1st. The cheap foam ones will smush down over time and get thinner and tear.
      Also, AE has many different “Lasts”. See my video on shoe sizes, and also see AEs website - search for their article “All About Lasts”. For example, I can wear an 11.5E in the 97 last, but not the 65 last.

      Gian Famiglietti I’ve gotten all of my inexpensive Allen Edmonds on eBay. Once you know your AE size in each Last, you can buy them online knowing they’ll fit. If you have specially wide (like me) or especially narrow feet, or especially large (over size 12) or especially small feet (under 8), your selection will be less. Use the eBay app saved searches, and check it every couple days. Just takes diligence and looking every day. It took me almost a year to find those Shreveports.

    Do you ever buy nice brand on eBay for cheap and then have a cobbler restore them. If so, have you had much luck?

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  6 років тому

      TLB if you see the description to this video, I list out each shoe and where I got them from (in the video I was going by memory, the list is more accurate) but yes, as stated in the video & description I have purchased Allen Edmonds from eBay, but I generally do not take them to a cobbler. I try to buy shoes with soles in very good condition and with uppers in good condition then polish them up myself. You’ll find many shoes on eBay that are not polished, or mishapen from lack of use of shoe trees, and therefore will sell cheap. I don’t care if the uppers are dull from lack of polish, but I don’t want any cracked or dried out leather. I can cobble new heels or install rubber protective half soles myself. I recently purchased a pair of black Sanfords (cap toe Derby) in great shape for $10 plus shipping!

    Bostonian went downhill big time since the 80s. Bought my first pair in 1985 for a new job, fantastic high quality, wore them into early 2000s, until my feet changed due to aging. Newer made in China Bostonians are poorly made, the leather is awful. Now wearing Joseph Cheaney, which are expensive but fantastic quality.

    Nice collection but why all those rubber soles?

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  6 років тому

      R Fulano Thabks! I prefer the rubber protective half soles for several reasons:
      1. I live in the Midwest US where the ground is wet probably 60% of the year and the water isn’t very good for leather soles.
      2. The rubber half sole can be removed and replaced when they wear out, extending the life of the soles. I walk outside a lot, and pavement is pretty hard on leather soles.
      3. The rubber also has much better traction in wet and light snow. When there is accumulated snow on the pavement in winter, generally I wear rubber galoshes, but sometimes you still get caught in the weather without galoshes.

      I understand, but why not resole with dainite soles? I understand (I am no expert) that this way it will ruin the shoe because if the imbalance. But nice shoes👍🏻

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  6 років тому

      I’ve been wearing them this way for a few years, some days walking 15,000 steps, and have no problems and no “imbalance”. They are only 0.08” (1/12” or about 2mm) thick. Resoling with Dainite is probably $80-$100 or more, but the way I do it costs me about $3 a pair (cost of the half soles plus glue).

      😳😂 we all have our own standards and budget! I really like those Bostonian penny loafers. I did a whole video recently on thrifting Bostonians. In the 1980’s and earlier they made some good shoes IMO; they use good leather and are Goodyear Welted. Anyway, I did this Shoe Collection video almost a year ago, and since then I’ve acquired a pair of single monk strap Polos, a pair of black AE Sanfords, a pair of walnut AE Sanfords, a pair of Kilgour French & Stanbury (Bench Made English shoe) quarter brogue Oxfords, a tan pair of J&M Aristocraft quarter brogue Oxfords with a medallion, a brown pair of NOS 1980’s AE 5th Avenues. I sold off the brown corrected grain AE cap toe Oxfords, threw away the burgundy Bostonian tassel loafers, and gave away the Principe brown woven shoes. The tan Bostonian loafers and black wingtip tassel loafers are good to keep around for wet slushy days that I don’t have client appointments so I don’t have to worry about salt staining my good shoes.
      Personally it’s not just the better brands I am attracted to as I get older, but good FITTING shoes. Especially since I’m s 2e to 3e width, I’m getting less and less tolerant of too narrow shoes.

      Robert Powers : Your Allen Edmonds’ black macneil wingtips are great, though - elegant, quality, handcrafted, versatile pair of shoes; and quintessentially American, too. For the price range, they are absolutely unbeatable. BTW, I wasn’t trying to be rude, sarcastic, or condescending. And you’re right, we all have our own taste and budget. Though, for me it has always been about the style than the price. I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than $450 for a pair of shoes - in fact some of my favorite shoes are in the $50-$150 range. Style wise, though, I just can’t stomach those first 4 pairs (but that’s just me) - the rest of your collection is great.
