  • The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is a collection of Marcus Aurelius' personal journals. He wrote to himself about his thoughts, on how to conduct himself, and how to be a better man. The journals have no official title, but have been gathered into what are widely knows as the "Meditations".
Marcus Aurelius wrote 12 books in total, many of which were written while he was away from home on campaign. He was a Stoic philosopher, Roman Emperor, husband, and father, and much of his writing has been quotes and used for hundreds of years to help guide people to a better life.
This is an audiobook reading of Meditations - Book 1
    Translation by Martin Hammond.

Why did you skip the sentence “putting a stop to homosexual love of young men?” Being selectively censorious to the writing of a man from centuries ago is bad form.

There are numerous translations, including "to put a check on pederastic love affairs" (Robin Hard).
This text written over centuries ago used language differently than we do. The way your book translated it makes it seem as if Aurelius thinks homosexuality is a sin. However, If you delve further you will notice; while the majority of Romans disapproved, Greek civilization had a major issue with pederasty (adults with romantic feelings towards young boys) which was unfortunately legal at the time.
The word Homosexual was coined in 1869 by the Hungarian physician Karoly Maria Benkert, the Greeks simply referred to it as aphrodisia, love, which included men and women.
Language is constantly evolving, and that is just another thing I love about it.

@@Ineffable67 nah, stop cooping, he skipped what was written... Trying to come up with excuses won't make you any good. Not everyone is an idiot to believe bs like that.

@@DREIKVENONW I don't know where I stated that the creator of this video did not skip over that line, I was merely attempting to provide you with more info regarding the topic. Good day/night and try to remember: self discipline is just as important as treating others with kindness and fairness.

@@Ineffable67 “pederastic love affairs” has essentially the same meaning as “homosexual love for young boys” though.
It’s also important to note that Marcus was Roman, not Greek, and the traditional ethics of the Roman aristocracy then generally looked down on those at the receiving end of pederasty.
Anyways, it’s important to put all this in proper context, where Marcus was probably just praising his adoptive father for not being overindulgent in sex, and not criticising homosexuality itself (that would be a totally different matter).
