YAAAY ANOTHER REACTOR DOES EUROVISION! Curing my PED - Post Eurovision Depression (that's a real thing in Europe). Pastora Soler is a huge star in Spain and came 10th at the 2012 contest held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan in a field of 42 entries. The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) is an annual televised competition organised by the EBU (the European Broadcasting Union - a union for public national broadcasters from over 50 countries from Europe and countries touching the Mediterranean (North African countries, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan etc.)) The broadcaster from every country represents that country and has to select an artist (group, soloist, duet...) and an original song. All members of the EBU are eligible to participate. The contest is probably the oldest televised musuc competition - it started in 1956 as a way to unite a war-torn Europe through music. The first edition was held in Lugano, Switzerland and 7 countries participated. The winning country has to host the event next year - basically the prize for winning Eurovision is debt cuz this is dubbed the Olympics of music and it sure has to have an Olympic budget. Nowadays the contest unites over 40 countries and the record is 43. The way a country selects their song is completely up to them. These are the 3 usual categories. Some countries do internal selections meaning that they pick an artist behind closed doors, let them write a song and they usually release them with a MV. Others choose their act through a national final. They make on open call for song submissions, some even open songwritting camps and then they hold a televised or online show where people and/or professional juries can vote and decide the country's representative. Both of these selection methods are more prone to picking a well established artist, but some countries scout out for new talent using shows like the X Factor (like the island nation of Malta) or Idol (Georgia, a country in the Caucasus, not the US state). Some of these selections show also have a long tradition in their countries like the San Remo festival in Italy, Festivali E Kenges in Albania or Dora in my country, a contestbheld every year since our independence (except we took a break these past 9 years🤣). The rules state that the song cannot have been commercially released or performed before September and countries have until mid-March to announce their entries. The song has to be ORIGINAL (though some entries are debatable; see Belgium 1996 and then check out Sweden 2001🤗totally not plagiarised), no longer than 3 minutes long and cannit be commercial (meaning it cannot have names of products in it - the tiny country of San Marino had to change their 2012 entry Facebook to Social Network Song). Things heat up in May when the live shows start. Only 6 people are allowed on stage in total (incl. Singers, dancers and whatever else u need). Until 2004 there was only one show with a max number of participants of 26 (another rule), but because there was so much interest they added a semifinal, which had to be split into 2 in 2008 to accomodate the growing number of countries. ESC has to be in one week in May, the semifinals on a Tuesday and Thursday and the Grand Final on Saturday, all shows are broadcast LIVE at 9PM Central European Time (New York: 3PM LA: 12) on each broadcaster (with commentary in every countries language). The language for the show is Englisg with some French here and there. 10 countries qualify from each semifinal which brings us to 20 finalists. The last 6 are the host country and the Big 5. The Big 5 were created in 2004 to ensure that the countries that give the most financial support to the contest qualify directly to the final (u could see how some people disagree with that). The Big 5 include: 🇫🇷France, 🇩🇪Germany, 🇮🇹Italy, 🇪🇸Spain and the 🇬🇧United Kingdom. The voting is the most interesting and political part of the show. It changed a lot over the years, but this is the nexest one since 2016. 50% of the vite comes from tbe public (in every country) and 50% from the juries (every country has 5 music industry professionals). The top 10 songs from both the televote and public get points (this is how we cheer ourselves up when our fav doesn't do well: "They were 11th in every country" he or she said while sobbing). The points are as follows: 12 points for 1st placed song, 10 for 2nd, 8 for 3rd, 7 to 1 for 4th to 10th. The votes are presented like this. First we go to each country where a spokesperson awaits to tell us where their country's JURY 12 points go to (the other points are shown automatically on the scoreboard). After a good half an hour of that we turn to the televotes. Instead of presenting them like the juries', they add up all the points each song got from the televote and they announve them from the vountry that got last place from the juries to the first so we do not know the winner until the very last moment. The reason why its so political is u cannot vote for ur own country so both the juries and voters at home vote for their neighbouring countries. Cyprus always gives Greece 12 points, Balkan and Nordic countries vote for each other and traditionally no one votes for the UK because everybody hates the English (sorry Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland) and the BBC doesn't care about the contest and always sends bad entries. The country with the most wins at the contest is Ireland with 7 followed by Sweden with 6. There are many famous singers who participated at the contest, including but not limited to: ABBA (Sweden 1974, with the song Waterloo), Celine Dion (Switzerland 1988, she is Canadian but was invited by the Swiss broadcaster to represent them), Katrina and the Waves (UK 1997, famous for 'Walking on Sunshine), Bonnie Tyler (UK 2013, remember the song I Need a Hero)... this year's contest was held in Tel Aviv, Israel and was won by the Netherlands (they will host 2020 obviously). You should react to all the winners 1956-2019 (there are many recaps out there) and if I can be greedy and request 2 songs from this year: Zero Gravity by Kate Miller-Heidke (AUSTRALIA) (they are not part of the EBU, but their broadcaster SBS waa invited to the contest in 2015 because they have been broadcasting ESC for over 30 years and they love it Down Under) and Hatrið Mun Sigra by Hatari (Iceland) WATCH THE SEMI FINAL PERFORMANCES OF THESE SONGS! Lástima que le tocó cantar esta basura genérica sueca en vez de algo más auténtico. Si la canción se destacó es gracias a ella y su voz, porque en sí misma no vale nada.
Absolutely. Ruth Lorenzo has an operistic mezzo soprano voice which will impress you a lot!! ´Dancing in the rain´ is in ENglish but obviously she is Spanish but she can speak English very fluently since she lived in Uk for a couple of years or so.
