Anita is SO underrated today. She was right up there WITH them in her day. She should NEVER be forgotten. I absolutely LOVE Lady. I absolutely ADORE Ella...but they weren't out there by themselves. We gave got to make sure we pass down more than two names to the generations behind us.
Fantastic! What a great sense of time all of these musicians possess. I've read that Anita herself was a drummer. No wonder she has such a great one in John Poole. A really fine performance by all!
That's O'Day's longtime drummer John Poole. He didn't read music and used to work in strip clubs when O'Day found him. But he knew how to follow her and how to play time the way she liked.
@@aDogNamedHandsome Absolutely reluctantly if you recall. He wouldn't let her try it for years, knowing her love of alcohol. In the end he rather she experience it with him, a friend, than risk stumbling onto it with a stranger
She would tell you NOT AT ALL.......Her faves? Check Anita doing Cole Porter with Bill May's arranging the horn section on; YOU'RE THE TOP.........because I bet you wouldn't never know who Eckstine is....................

She wasn't a hellion at all. She was tough as nails, and didn't take shit from anybody. She got addicted, got set up by another musician to take the fall for drugs, (along with her husband)got busted on her own...finally kicked the smack. Through all of that, she managed to record 15 or 16 of the most important jazz records ever made. She and Poole.

She's so wonderful!
What a fantastic performance! Thanks for posting, Mr. Eichler. Anita looks and sounds great here.
What an insanely talented drummer. Unbelievable!

Super melodic, he played the whole tune.
He is my favorite brush player, one of the most underrated drummers I can think of.
@@salviadivinorum1762 According to her autobiography, he used to shoot her up. Just saying.

I love this particular time period of hers.
She only got more expressive! Amazing.
She really was one of the greatest jazz female vocalist 💫

Great to hear the verse. All serious jazz singers should learn the verses to the standards.
I agree. But I wish she had stuck to the original lyric of the refrain.

Great hairdo.
O’Day is good no question, but she’s just too much for me! I get it but at the same time I don’t. Bye 👋🏻 Anita.
No one likes you, Janet.
Why?
Anita was great no question nothing more to say except WOW!
