I struggle with mascara more than anything. I have small eyes, hooded, and short lashes due to eyeglasses. This has given me perspective on where I need to go when shopping for a mascara, very, very helpful🌞 thanks Caroline.
Speed Beauty by Caroline Barnes I prefer travel size too (or - even better - GWP size!) because the wand is shorter so it’s easier for me to use. Also, far less chance of it going dry and needing to be chucked away before you’ve finished it.
Thank you Caroline, I never knew mascara could be so scientific in application! I may give the honest beauty a try, my lashes are fair and short that I have tinted and then LVL every three months (new luxury since lockdown to support the industry) but look amazing with the my old trusted Estee Lauder clear primer and Sumptuous mascara, find I always go back to that. Could be a new alternative. Tried CT but oh the mess despite the instructions, went on OK but smudged a lot during the day. Max Factor is the best idiot proof mascara I have owned too - said idiot right here, great tip about the waterproof use too.
Hi Caroline, your look today is simply gorgeous! You look fabulous 😍 About mascaras, this is one if the things that I always have in my make up, as my lashes are very light in color and I need it to frame my blue eyes 🙂 The video is so informative and useful, that I’ll sit down and take notes 😜
I the 1970s I believe Maybelline made a lenthening mascara in midnight blue which made the whites of the eyes look whiter. It look like the deepest black you have ever seen but when look from the side lashes had dark navy blue light coming from the tip. That was the only mascara I would purchase.
What a fantastic video. Thanks you soooo much! My mascara is always anywhere but on my lashes. I have been using the full on volume on short lashes! I have now just ordered the max Factor one. This was so educational. I love your videos because you don't make me feel "stupid". I am learning so much. I am 51 and really just learning about make up properly. Blending, contouring etc. Thanks for what you do. I appreciate it one million per cent. Thanks Caroline... Hx
I used to love the big bushy brushes and now that I'm 52, I much prefer a thinner brush. I always wondered why. 🤔 Such a fantastic video! Thank you! 🥰❤️
I understand so much more now! Thank you. My current favourite is Clinique lash power (based on your recommendation) for my long but straight eyelashes - I always had issues with transfer but not now!
Hi Caroline ! Well, there was a wealth of information there! Thanks so much. You explained it all perfectly, not at all confusing. Thanks again, have a great weekend xx
I was able to use any mascara with good results for many years but when I hit my early 50’s I started having problems with smudging and product dropping under my eyes, plus my eyelash curl wouldn’t hold throughout the day. No idea why the change occurred. Then I started a year long search through both high-end, medium and low-end priced products, waterproof and non-waterproof, tubing, primers, etc. The best one I found was Gurlain Cils D’Enfer Maxi Lash ❤️. Perfect full bristle brush, great formula - full long and thick lashes with no spidery lashes or smudging and no need to even use an eyelash curler. . People would ask if I had lash extensions. It came in black and brown (which I love for casual since I am fair). Pricey but worth it! Just found out a few months ago they discontinued it and replaced it with a mascara with a hard plastic brush and only comes in the colour black. 😩 The new mascara is still good and doesn’t flake or smudge so I’ll continue using it but in my opinion it’s not as good as the Cils D’Enfer. So sad to lose my only can’t-live-without makeup product.
Brilliant video Caroline! I love CoverGirl The Super Sizer as an affordable dupe for the UD/ CT funky wand mascara. It has the straight edge to tightline and load the lashes, and a comb side to brush through. Also, KVD Go big or go home is a wonderful "fat wand" volumizing mascara.
Brilliantly explained Caroline, I often wondered why some mascaras that got rave reviews just didn’t work for me! The glossier lash slick is next on my list to try as I have long and thick lashes (luckily) and don’t need much help. Been using and loving the Estée Lauder little black primer as my daily mascara for years, love the brush and the formula. PS: you looks radiant in this video (as ever!) 💋
Thank you Caroline! This was brilliant! 😁 it made so much sense and I have picked up so much information which I didn’t know! I’m lucky that I have quite long lashes... but very fair. My all time favourite is Lancôme hypnose 😍 take care x
For me it's all about the formula, as everything flakes or runs on me. Everything. The best has been Blinc, followed by Eyeko. For normal mascara, the only one that lasts the workday is Hourglass' in the triangle tube.
My eyes are becoming hooded with age and I still love Better than Sez or Caution by hourglass even though they have big bristle brushes. I use Mac Gigaplay on my lower lashes. I hate plastic wands... I just can’t make them work. I do get lash lifts so at the beginning of the lift cycle I have to be careful with my head position and an open mouth the make sure I don’t get mascara on my lids. You are so right about finding the right mascara for your lashes. I buy mini’s to try them out and then go the full size once I try the mini out and I haven’t wasted a huge amount of money. I also love the new Fenty Beauty mascara (can’t fit the life of me think of the name at the moment, but that’s fabulous too). I always tightline to give the appearance of thicker lashes. I find waterproof mascara meh too so thanks for the recommendation.
Thank you for this video. I always wear a primer and my current favourite is the Max Factor blue lash primer. It's great, makes any mascara better and doesn't turn them grey like some white primers can. Affordable price too. Then I use a regular mascara, I've tried loads. My preference is a nice fat bristle wand but plastic spiky ones are good too. Favourites are Guerlain Max Lash, Eyeko Lash Alert (blue tube) and Bobbi Brown Smoky Eye Mascara. Then I finish with a top coat of a tubing mascara or I get pandarisation. At the moment I'm using Hourglass Caution but my all time favourite is Boots Stay Perfect Mascara. The Boots one is amazing. It really doesn't budge - heat or funerals are no barrier to its effectiveness. I find it too spiky on it's own though which is why I use it as a top coat to seal in the regular mascara underneath. Whilst it doesn't budge it removes easily with warm water. For the last year I have been having LVL and the effects are brilliant. I have long lashes and the treatment really helps open up my eyes. In my 40s my lashes started to get sparser. I tried rapidlash which really helped, now I use revitalash which is more expensive but more effective.
I’ve got thin but long lashes. I’ve tried so many high end and drug store and for me the winner is Covergirl Expressionist mascara. It’s very thickening without flaking. My lashes are too fine for most others, especially ones that are designed for separated lashes, I end up with like 4 mono-lashes.
Thank you, Caroline! I so look forward to your weekend morning video. I recently discovered L'Oreal's Telescopic mascara. The wand is tight and thin, allowing me to apply without clumping, giving me fantastic length. Even the waterproof version comes off easily. Have a wonderful weekend :)
Brilliant video. I never knew the details behind the brushes and this makes so much sense! Now I know why I prefer some mascaras to others. It seems to have so much more to do with the brush than the formula-. Thank you!
This is super helpful Caroline! Thanks so much for explaining the differences. I now have a much better understanding of what should suit my eyelashes. Cheers xx
Two of my favorites are Smashboxes Superfan. It lengthens, separates and stays put. My favorite is Bareminerals newest it is incredible it lengthens, strengthens, volumizes, separates is intense black, stays put and washes off.
I have used Masterpiece Max for about 20 years, its the only one that stays in place on my lashes and doesnt leave residue under my eyes by the end of the day. It makes them look ridiculously long and full. I love, love, love it. I live in the States now and cant get it here so whenever I travel back to the UK I bring a stash back with me. I have just run out and due to Covid cant travel and Boots dont do international delivery....my life is over :)
That was really interesting. I assumed I knew everything there was to know about mascaras but clearly not! Love your green and white background today, so fresh and airy. ☘️☘️☘️
Hi Caroline. What a fantastic video! I never knew so much of this so it was a real education. To be honest I never knew how to use the curved wand lol. My favourite mascara is by Clarins. Its a volumizing mascara and it leaves the lashes beautifully covered by soft and flexible. Definitely no crusty crunchy eyelashes with Clarins. I also have noticed that my lashes are healthier and thicker since using this. Again, great video. Take care and stay safe x
Watched this last night and what a fabulous video 😃 so much info and I now totally understand the reasons behind so many different types of mascara which have totally baffled me before !! I applied mine today just as you said and I cannot believe the difference ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge xxx
Great video idea, Caroline. Thank you! So interesting to go through this bunch of different mascaras. For my sensitive eyes I like these Mascaras the most: Max Factor Masterpiece black/brown, Clinique High Impact waterproof black/brown, T. LeClerc Mascara Volume waterproof brown.
I’ve tried so many mascaras but I love the MAC in extreme dimension 3D, it has a wand that does a great lash line and nice feathering but also creates a curl and it’s not crispy. There’s a lot in the tube so it lasts almost a year, even though I know it’s not supposed to be around that long. I find that instead of a special lash comb, a wand of an old favourite mascara washed out is a nice tool for combing through but I never need it for the MAC mascara I’ve never had it clump.
Your whole video was SO INFORMATIVE!!! I’ve never heard those tips. Thank you❤️. I’ve been tight-lining my lash beds with waterproof mascara for that lift using a thin eyebrow brush but I’ll have to try the IT cosmetics.
Caroline, this was such an informative video, thank you for sharing. I've picked up snippets across years of content consumption but never anything as helpful and in depth as this. Amazing! I have many of the same favourites as you do and I always trust your recommendations after having tried so many 💛
This often happens to me , depending on the humidity level. Waterproof should help and I also find that putting a little bit of eyelid primer under my eyes helps also.
That was such an eye-opener video. I really like the new Charlotte Tilbury mascara even though I wasn't using it properly. My holy grail is the L'Oréal Paradise Lash. The only con is that it dries out quickly.
Love this video, Caroline! I was always a Max Factor Masterpiece girl but I find the waterproof Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara gives a nice curl to my thin lashes. Quite keen to try the Surratt tint or the It Cosmetics Tightline mascara now! Would love to know what eyeshadow you have on here too 😊
THANK YOU for highlighting the fact that (like many things) there isn't a 'one size fits all for mascara' - finally 🎉 You look so fresh and pretty in this video - maybe you could do a tutorial on the makeup you're wearing. (Is it really annoying when people ask you to focus on something other than the topic of your video?!! If so, apologies 😊🙏🏼)
Love your hair up Caroline I was a benefit bad girl bang user but found I got a dark line one my over hang Tried revolution beauty stretch mascara and I love it. Easy to apply and doesn’t transfer.
Great informative video as always Caroline. Cautions my favourite from the ones you’ve mentioned, as it delivers a big lash look with minimal effort. I also always go back to lash paradise (L’Oréal, I think) as it does just the same as caution, but a quarter of the price. Though lash paradise dries up very quickly in comparison. I justify that as they should be replaced often. The wand is a little more clumsy also and tends to catch my hooded lid, but I think it’s also due to applying from the back, which today I’ve just learned is no no 🥰 . We have the same plant also, they are so pretty💚 xx
I’d be interested to the try the two push-up wands, now that I understand how to use them. Thank you! Mascara is so personal, plus body chemistry plays an enormous role in how the formula works. I’ve tried so many popular brands over the years but my tried and true I’ve been using sine 1989.
Brilliant video, I like the m&s mascara for everyday and I'm enjoying a Bobbi Brow one for extra oomph when going out (a rare occurrence at the moment) xx
Yay this is the type of content I love. I've got a love hate relationship with mascara in that it's my desert island item but it drives me mad as I've never found one that doesn't flake & leave little black specs under my eyes. I love MF Masterpiece for definition, nothing beats it but that one flakes too. Not tried a tubing one yet, I need one that gives definition and volume for super fine lashes and that is a low price too - does one exist?! 😃
Jo Rooke I ave long thin/ fine lashes and I use a tubing mascara fra Clinique - High impact curling mascara and I think it gives both definition and volume and on it doesn't flake. But It's not the cheapest mascara but I have purchased it 4-5 times by now.
@@vanitygirl6989 I have used a Clinique High Impact mascara in the past but it wasn't a curling one and I don't think it was tubing either, I'll take a look at their website for the one you mentioned. It might be too expensive for me as I don't like to pay much for mascara as I get through them quite quickly 😁
Jo - definitely try a Tubing mascara - I have v fine straight lashes and tubing mascaras with a thin brush seem to work the best for me. I'm yet to find one that gives a good curl - I think it's hard to get curl with a tubing mascara because the formula is so different. If I curl my lashes, then use a Primer, then a Tubing mascara that does the best job. I like clinique lash power, the Kevin Auqion one mentioned in the video, no7 do a reasonable one although sometimes it comes out a bit too thick on my lashes. Japanese brands are particularly good. I really like dhc perfect pro protection and I'm just waiting for Heroine make long and curl mascara to arrive.
When we find the mascara we love it's difficult to change! Mine is Lancôme Monsier Big in brown (brown is sooo much more natural for people who have fair/light skin)
Great video! I have just discovered the CAUTION Hourglass mascara and its simply amazing!!!! I have deep set eyes and not that many or long lashes and i usually get mascara on my lid. Great brush and also great formula quality. Bought the mini size to try it and will definitely buy the full size although expensive. But worth it.
Wonderful detail, thank you! I'll be trying some of these. I wish I could take the brush out of a mascara I love, & use it in the formula I want. I know it's possible but a big pain for daily. The Honest is very good. Acts like waterproof but washes off so easily. Feel it's better on the lashes. The brush is too big for me, I get it everywhere most of the time. 2 things I always have, "benefit's lash primer" for separating lashes, getting them where I want & Covergirl Lash Exact waterproof over the top.
Caroline that was theeee most fab video my fave makeup thing is applying mascara love it have tried and have quite a few of those boyos ! Surprise surprise lol I do tend to use several ones to get an effect and found video so helpful about the physics of it all lol I had sorta dismissed the Charlotte one but understand proper way to apply and why now I am a sucker for trying new ones love the loreal paradise one too but yea I’m probs in category of smaller older eyes too big a brush loved it and shall direct my daughter and friends this direction x have great weekend xx
Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all of the ins and outs. This video is so helpful. By the by I do love the new Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes mascara. I tend to wiggle the flat part at my roots, then in the same movement work the bristles threw my lashes.
Great video! Thank you ❤️ I’m on mat leave so can’t afford my usual Bobbi Brown mascara, have found a great cheap alternative for everyday - Elf 3 in 1 👌🏼
Good explanations! I am older, and am blessed with long, pretty thick, very black lashes (I know, tough, right?), but as I have white hair, and very pale eyes, sometimes when I use mascara my lashes can look ridiculous and overdone. I have found the perfect mascara, which coats and separates my lashes, is not inky black, and lasts without flaking, I use the Macara Reviver from Beauty Pie - not technically a mascara, although I think it is - this would also be great for someone who likes a more natural look. I have always used a curved, natural bristle brush and this one has a small, plastic, short bristled brush, but it glides through my lashes with no problem.
Such an informative video 😀 I have used the Benefit They’re Real Primer for years - the brush is smaller than the They’re Real Mascara (so I don’t poke myself in the eye with it) and it give great lift / curl, which means I don’t have to use eyelash curlers. The mascara I use over the top has varied, but I started to lose quite a few lashes and developed ‘bald’ patches (think it is an age thing 😕) so I tried the By Terry Terribly Mascara which contains a lash serum and in a couple of months the patches are gone and my lashes are back to their long, full, voluminous selves!
I love the honest beauty one. My favourite waterproof is the maybelline lash sensational and it the best, I’ve worn it funerals where I cried buckets and it didn’t move, yet comes off easily with an oil or balm cleanser. I struggled hugely with straight lash combs, but then found a curved one recently and it’s been a game changer! It’s just like this one: www.amazon.co.uk/OurLeeme-Eyelash-Separator-Beauty-Makeup/dp/B07FCHRNTH
Thank you Caroline as it was very informative. I did not like Pillow talk mascara at all but love the Eyko one and Honest . Normally have LVL which makes an incredible difference to my silly lashes . I have extremely thick hair but sparse blonde lashes 🤷♀️🥰
This was a very helpful video, thank you so much! I recently‘discovered’ the ByTerry one you mentioned, it’s transformed the way I use mascara, absolutely love it 💖
This helped me a lot, but I thought I'd lay my case before you all in hopes of some experiences with my type of lashes. Mine are reasonably long, very averagely thick, my eyes are quite big and no real trouble with hoods (as yet!). What I want is the type of plump, dense volume that makes it look as if I had good old fashioned falsies on! None of this jammy looking spiders legs for me. I don't care about length, and 1 to 2 cm lashes that many people are wearing now just look cute but daft imo! I want density (sick of the word volume), I want deep and mysterious, thick, lifted shadow lashes. Sob. Where is my eyelash tribe??? X
Hi Caroline, thank you for this video. I’ve purchased Max F , Hourglass and Charlotte T mascaras before this film and I must say that I really struggle to use all three. Your explanation was very helpful and now I understand how to apply them but my lashes (long but thin) look clumpy and I have prints of mascara on my brow almost 🙄
Loved your video! Have you tried the mascara by Sweed Lashes? It’s a comb on one side and the other side is just totally flat. It’s uplifting and very similar to Charlotte Tilbury push up or lash freak but a very skinny wand, so very easy to apply.
Thank you for this video. I have short & thin eyelashes and I can't seem to find the right mascara. No matter what I use, it clumps & it looks like I have 3 maybe 4 spike lashes. After watching this video, I've been using the wrong type of brush. I'll be checking out some new mascara this week.
This video is the only one I have seen going into so much detail. Love it.
Thank you!!
ellenmeilee agree! Such a good explanation of the variety of brushes out there.
I love how you explain the technical side of beauty, it really helps me understand. Thank you so much! ×
I struggle with mascara more than anything. I have small eyes, hooded, and short lashes due to eyeglasses. This has given me perspective on where I need to go when shopping for a mascara, very, very helpful🌞 thanks Caroline.
I like a smaller brush with my hooded eyes, so I buy the mini/travel version of mascaras because the brush is usually smaller.
Now that’s a clever beauty hack!
Speed Beauty by Caroline Barnes I prefer travel size too (or - even better - GWP size!) because the wand is shorter so it’s easier for me to use. Also, far less chance of it going dry and needing to be chucked away before you’ve finished it.
@@victoriaw6748 Exactly! I haven't actually bought mascara for over a year because GWP is my friend.
I’ve tried so many mascaras but Glossier is my absolute favorite on my 50+ eyes. Perfect for everyday. Not glamorous but stays put.
Thank you Caroline, I never knew mascara could be so scientific in application! Clinic high impact, Benefit Roller lash, L’Oreal voluminous carbon black

Truly excellent! Kontigo sell just mascara wands. Thanks you Caroline
Great video. Mascara is a really personal choice. I cannot maneuver those jumbo wands. It’s skinny ones for me all around.
Have tried hundreds over the years x current I use Clarins 4 D and I find its excellent all round
I love your videos! These product comparisons are super helpful coupled with your application tips. Thank you 💕

That was such an eye-opener video. I really like the new Charlotte Tilbury mascara even though I wasn't using it properly. My holy grail is the L'Oréal Paradise Lash. The only con is that it dries out quickly.
Try the voluminous from loreal, it does'nt dry out as fast and has a thinner brush. Has been my fave for years.
Great help! But I haven't found one that I like, so maybe this list will help.
You look fabulous today!
I love the Kevin Aucoin one, it really suits my hooded eyes! Love your hair up ❤️ xxx
Thank you, this video is extremely helpful.
So detailed 👌 well done 👏
Thank you Caroline, I never understood the different wands in mascaras. This information will help me in choosing the correct mascara fir my lashes.
Love this video, Caroline! I was always a Max Factor Masterpiece girl but I find the waterproof Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara gives a nice curl to my thin lashes. Quite keen to try the Surratt tint or the It Cosmetics Tightline mascara now! Would love to know what eyeshadow you have on here too 😊
This is increedddddibleeee knowledge, thanks so much for sharing with us mere mortals 🥰🥰
THANK YOU for highlighting the fact that (like many things) there isn't a 'one size fits all for mascara' - finally 🎉
You look so fresh and pretty in this video - maybe you could do a tutorial on the makeup you're wearing. (Is it really annoying when people ask you to focus on something other than the topic of your video?!! If so, apologies 😊🙏🏼)
Love your hair up Caroline
I was a benefit bad girl bang user but found I got a dark line one my over hang
Tried revolution beauty stretch mascara and I love it.
The wand is a little more clumsy also and tends to catch my hooded lid, but I think it’s also due to applying from the back, which today I’ve just learned is no no 🥰
What’s your tried and true?
Thank you so much. I struggle with mascara and learned a lot. Very thankful I’ve found you!
I love the two max factor one thank you for giving information about it love corrinne my friend
Hi Caroline! What a wonderful video. It`s amazing listen and learning from someone who really knows what is saying. Thank you so much!
Brilliant video, I like the m&s mascara for everyday and I'm enjoying a Bobbi Brow one for extra oomph when going out (a rare occurrence at the moment) xx
Such a great video! I learned so very much. Thank you Caroline.
A tubing mascara will change your life 🤣
Jo - definitely try a Tubing mascara - I have v fine straight lashes and tubing mascaras with a thin brush seem to work the best for me.
@@sophiedonnelly8013 thank you Sophie I'm excited to try one 😃
When we find the mascara we love it's difficult to change!
Mine is Lancôme Monsier Big in brown (brown is sooo much more natural for people who have fair/light skin)
Great video! I have just discovered the CAUTION Hourglass mascara and its simply amazing!!!! I have deep set eyes and not that many or long lashes and i usually get mascara on my lid. Great brush and also great formula quality. Bought the mini size to try it and will definitely buy the full size although expensive. But worth it.
Excellent explanation 👌🏼
Wonderful detail, thank you! I'll be trying some of these. I wish I could take the brush out of a mascara I love, & use it in the formula I want. I know it's possible but a big pain for daily. The Honest is very good. Acts like waterproof but washes off so easily. Feel it's better on the lashes. The brush is too big for me, I get it everywhere most of the time. 2 things I always have, "benefit's lash primer" for separating lashes, getting them where I want & Covergirl Lash Exact waterproof over the top.
I bought Honest Beauty based on your recommendation. I love it!!
Great, great video and brilliant explanations, Caroline 🥰!!! Thanks!
😘
Caroline that was theeee most fab video my fave makeup thing is applying mascara love it have tried and have quite a few of those boyos ! Surprise surprise lol I do tend to use several ones to get an effect and found video so helpful about the physics of it all lol
I had sorta dismissed the Charlotte one but understand proper way to apply and why now I am a sucker for trying new ones love the loreal paradise one too but yea I’m probs in category of smaller older eyes too big a brush loved it and shall direct my daughter and friends this direction x have great weekend xx
Looking gorgeous Caroline! X
glossier lash slick is also a tubing mascara, that's why it stays put.
Great video! I am in love with your eyeshadow today, it's stunning!! :)
I love your videos but this is one of your best!! Thank you !!!
Thank you for this brilliant video. Now I know what type of wand will work best for my bottom lashes.
Thank you, that was so so informative.
Thanks for this Caroline, I've been doing it wrong for years!!!
This is a great channel - just discovered it.
Thanks Caroline, a really helpful video. With so many mascaras in the market it can be difficult to decide which one will work best x
I used to love Max Factor. It's been discontinued here in Canada for several years. Such a shame!
Very helpful. I like Dior 'pump and volume' mascara it makes my lashes thick and long.
Great video! Thank you ❤️ I’m on mat leave so can’t afford my usual Bobbi Brown mascara, have found a great cheap alternative for everyday - Elf 3 in 1 👌🏼
This was incredibly helpful and so informative! Many thanks for such valuable content!
I bought the Max Factor 2000 calorie mascara which you recommended a few year ago and haven't looked back I prefer a bristle brush x
Thank you Caroline 💕
Such an informative video 😀 I have used the Benefit They’re Real Primer for years - the brush is smaller than the They’re Real Mascara (so I don’t poke myself in the eye with it) and it give great lift / curl, which means I don’t have to use eyelash curlers. The mascara I use over the top has varied, but I started to lose quite a few lashes and developed ‘bald’ patches (think it is an age thing 😕) so I tried the By Terry Terribly Mascara which contains a lash serum and in a couple of months the patches are gone and my lashes are back to their long, full, voluminous selves!
such a great video and such useful information! Thank you so much. I see a few mascaras I will try!
Thank you very much Caroline, really helpful video x
For the tiniest brush (even smaller than the one shown) look at korean/Japanese brand innisfree and its microscara
Thank you so much, that was really informative 💕 I will choose my mascara more carefully now!
Jesus Mary n Joseph! Had absolutely no idea the amount of differences in mascara
