there is just something special about him and his talent, even though he is playing an old style of music it sounds fresh. absolutely brilliant i have all of his cds.
Thanks for clearing this up- you're right, he is doing both parts, the melody and the strumming. And thanks for the tip on what else to look at. I'll check it out.
Capo at the fourth fret, mostly open C, G, and F (it's really an E, not C, but that form with capo), sometimes sticks on F to C to G (now i'm waking up feeling bad again) but there is the cool run on "I should never touch the stuff" where he goes F, G, and then C, A-, C# diminished, then back to F, then G...or you could play a C7 instead of the diminished. He throws in a C7 a few times, like coming out of the solo. Great song and easy to play!
Look up him doing this song on KXT Live and you can get a better shot of his picking hand - he is picking with thumb, index finger and pinky (the latter on the upstroke.)
No, he's just strumming. I don't like it when performers use a recorded accompaniment on stage. He's not bad, but if you really want to see finger picking, check out Townes Van Zandt.

Great voice, great song.
This is an amazing performance, but am I the only one who hears two guitars playing, most notably during the instrumental break?
genius

Yeah, the chords are easy to finger but to get that strum pluck thumb pluck with feeling is not easy.
There is 2 guitars playing,.. But it's all coming out of that one. Tricky fingers he's got.
Its really all just him. Its a common comment on his songs.

reminds me of a young tom waits, before a bear ate his voice and took its place of course.

I think he sounds great

This is just him. No accompanyists.
I know this is 10 years late but I hope you've realized how wrong you were. This dude had serious skill
