Live Sound Design Jam on Korg modwave - Zebra Crossing

- This is my very first (recorded) jam on the Korg modwave synthesizer. It's based on one custom-made modwave patch, using the built-in arpeggiators, with live sound design throughout the jam, showcasing the powerful wavetable and motion sequencing features on the modwave.
My music on Bandcamp: waveformer42.ba...
This thing is ridiculously powerful and fun to play with. I'm truly amazed at how Korg has managed to make this thing so user-friendly and enjoyable, with a feature set that's hard to beat - in hardware or in software.
A modwave patch (performance) consists of two layers, each with three oscillators.
This patch uses each layer and oscillator as a separate melodic or percussive element or track, for a total of 6 separate tracks.
Layer A Osc 1 Arp Melody 1
Layer A Osc 2 Arp Melody 2
Layer A Osc Sub Arp Melody 3
Layer B Osc 1 Arp Melody Bass
Layer B Osc 2 Tuned Perc
Layer B Noise Noise Perc
Each track's volume can be controlled independently, so I can fade each track in and out.
The oscillators on each layer share the arpeggiator, the filter and the effects.
The "patch" / oscillator on each track has it's own amplitude envelope, using Osc 1 and Osc 2 envelopes, as well as the Amp envelope.
Motion sequence lanes A-D modifies the notes played by the arpeggiator, adding silence/rests, holding notes, adding ratchets, adding glide, or shifting the notes up or down by an octave or a fifth.
So even though there are only two arpeggiators, one for each layer, each of the six tracks appears to have it's own unique rhythm and melody.
The ModWheel is used to increase the Reverb Size and Envelope Decays.
The KAOSS pad is used to control a decimator / bit-crusher effect on layer B.
The jam and sound design is further explained with text overlays in the video.
The audio is recorded to SD card on Zoon R-16 mixer/recorder and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on a Canon EOS M50 mk2 with the included EF-M 15-45mm lens. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 17.
Easily the best use of a Modwave on the entire internet. Excellence!
You did a remarkable job. Your music helped me to write this year's Christmas greeting. Thank you for enriching my path and the honor of crossing onto yours.
So glad I got this synth. Can use from synthwave to dirty drum and bass. What a versatile tool. Has to be my favorite synth today
Very great jam on the so powerful Modwave. Thank you for guiding us during the performance, your video is also a tutorial of sound design on this gear. It is very useful for Modwave explorers. Keep doing so good kind of job!
Class is always in session for my Modwave and Wavestate, on this channel. Much appreciated. And enjoyed!
extremely relaxed energyflow!
Awesome, I am inspired... mine arrives shortly. Pleased to have ordered before it gets 'upgraded', as has the Wavestate ... and another 250 gets added to the price tag. But whatever, a Wavestate will be following this when funds allow. Thanks for sharing this with your helpful notes and comments about what you did during the performance. Very useful. :)
This is the first video that's made me actually want the Modwave. Excellent performance!
Yes, feel the same here, also thank you @Adam
Wow that's the built-in reverb? It sounds amazing - so much clarity. I'm liking the sounds from this synth and this arpeggiated jam!
Yes, the built-in effects sound great 😊
I'm an old synthesizer programmer, as I am very close to 50 years old, I want to extend my great appreciation for your exhibition of this machine live! I have had the Waldorf q and The Waldorf microwave 2xt, and I've owned the original korg Monopoly.. and although I don't have the waldorf's anymore I have been wanting another wave table you're very similar to the XT but kind of missing the old korg of sound of their analog counterparts... This really helped me at the stage to make a buying decision. The mod wave will complement my SY77 by Yamaha perfectly
Well, I’m 51, so I’m a few years ahead of you 😀. The Monopoly has a wonderful sound and is high on my wishlist. Hope you’ll be happy with the modwave 😁
@@Waveformer hahhaha
Very nice sounds, now I need to get modwave
Great showcase of the Modwave. Bravo!
Enjoyable and informative. My WaveState is about to get a brother.
Cool! 😊
Very good performance and I like the explanations !
Lovely! I may have to invest in that synth.
absolutely stunning m8 inspirational and all from a few notes just wow!! I'm due to order one of these thanks for sharing 👍
merry christmas to you and your family
Merry Christmas 🎄😊
Merry christmas to you.... And thanks for this christmas gift!
Merry Christmas, Frank 🎄
Never having done meditation, your gentle trance music made me all blissed out! Love the reverb - thought it must be a Big Sky, but no, all Modwave. I'm falling back in love with the JD and will try making some of your sounds here with the JD. Thanks so much.
Pflichtkauf!👍👏🤗🎹🎶🎵
Cool 👍. This is more my style than the usual jangly wavetable sounds. I'm getting the MicroFreak for Christmas to see how well I get on with wavetables before shelling out on the Modwave.
Cool! The MicroFreak is great!
Love watching you play/create 👏👏🎶👍
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
fantastic track..
Is it possible to control volume level of each waveform? each osc has 2...and also you mentioned there are 6 independent tracks..can the 6 be recorded independently to daw? Will you make soundbank for modwave in the future? cheers...got to get this synth..
The soundtrack of my contemplative life..
I often put it on in the background while working :-)
Listening again, having now purchased my own. Excellent demo, Waveformer!
This is really cool bro !! I can keep listening to this !! Well done and thanks for sharing !! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌
Очень прекрасно исполнено! Благо Дарю за показ. Привет из России! КОРГ везде!
I just tried the demo of the vst version - really impressed this synth. Although somewhat apples and oranges, the wavestate and modwave are strongly in the same category of synth and I found this synth so much more intuitive and faster to program. Perfectly in the center of a vin diagram of complexity and speed of patch creation. For me personally, a synth with loads of complexity and possibility isn’t worth it if I’m spending too much time to get from a-z.
The modwave is great. Korg did a great job with the user interface of the VST. I have the hardware version of modwave as well, and found it cool that the muscle memory I built up programming the Wavestate carries over to the modwave. Great synths both of them, but definitely different. 🎶
Great video !
The main difference between a MODwave and a WAVEstate is the WAVEstate can change patches per sequence step and doesn't have wave tables, and the Kaos/vector control between wave and mod.
Ha...! I was hoping you might pick up one of these! Is it v similar to the Wavestate? Both are Berlin School friendly... But do I need both!? 😉
My own tools include a Korg Kronos and some Korg soft synths, both PC and iOS. I’m always interested in what Korg has to offer on the market. I may pick one of these up at some point. Nice job, btw!
Not sure if you already picked it up but the vst ver of the modwave is on sale right now 😊
Can you explain, how you record the note sequences into the Modwave? I can't reproduce this. Or are you using an external sequencer?
No external sequencer - just the built in arpeggiator :-).
@@Waveformer fantastisch!👍👏🎹🎶🎵🤗
Hi there thanks for this! I am new to synths and so far I have been learning on a Roland JDXi but I have the ModWave on order now, could you help me with something I find a bit confusing though, did you program an arp sound into the sequencer, and if so can it change key but still sound in tune, in other words if the key changes does the arp note in the sequencer know to hit the right notes that are in tune with the new key? I hope that makes sense, I was thinking because the sequencer does not record chords and just single notes with each step that this would be very limiting to what ambient arp sounds could be made, maybe this is not the case though because this sounds really nice, but I dont know how you achieved this really, thanks again, kindest regards.
Great relaxing piece.
What recording software do you use? I recently bought the Modwave and downloaded the KOrG software but it keeps saying it can’t find my hardware
Check the video description :-). I record to a hardware mixer and just normalize the audio in the Audacity editor afterwards. If you want to record to audio software, you need an audio interface that you connect the audio outputs on the modwave to. You can not record audio from the USB cable.
Update to the newest firmware was the trick for me
Great work overall!!
I have recently purchased this. Will it work with Ableton 12 suite?
@@40davegardner yes, it’ll work with Ableton Live. But note that once you start the arpeggiators on the Wavestate, it is probably best not stop them until the song is over, and just mute/unmute the audio in Ableton as needed. This is to make sure the arpeggiators and wave sequences stay in sync. If they get out of sync, the sound will be a bit weird, with the attack of the envelope for each note played perhaps sounding a bit “off”. It’s hard to explain, but you’ll know it if it happens :-). If you really want to stop the arpeggiators, you should let the notes ring out for some seconds, until the wavesequences stop playing (you’ll see the lights stop moving along the wavesequence buttons at the bottom right). Then everything should be in sync next time you play a note.
It is also possible to disable the arpeggiators altogether, but I haven’t done that too much, so I don’t know how useful that’ll be. If the wavesequences reset often (because no note is playing) you won’t get as much variation in the sound compared to if the arpeggiators and wavesequences run continuously.
If you’re stuck or have more questions, please ask me and I’ll do my best to assist :-).
@@Waveformer thank you very much for your reply. It is much appreciated. I will be devoting my weekend to getting myself set-up properly and will definitely be checking in on your channel. I will definitely take you up on your offer of advice.
How would you describe the difference in the experience of creating/performing on the Modwave versus the Wavestate ? I am assuming you prefer Wavestate overall as your output on that is HUGE but I wondered why ? Thanks. 👍🙏
That’s a good question. They are similar, and you can use many of the same techniques on both. Since the Wavestate has a sample wave sequence, it’s easy to get a completely different sound on each step. That takes some more programming on the modwave. I would say modwave is perhaps a more “pure” synth since it is based on basic waveforms whereas the Wavestate is based on samples. Samples is kind of cheating when it comes to synthesis. But it does sound great :-). If I had gotten the modwave before the Wavestate, the modwave would probably have been my favorite, but as I got the Wavestate first I’d have to say that is my favorite of the two, and maybe my favorite synth of all time :-).
@@Waveformer Yes, I think you have certainly found your artistic "place" with the Wavestate as you have surpassed the "making sounds" phase we all do on our synths, and have configured the WS into a proper musical instrument which you create, compose and play on to a very high standard - a real music production artist on WS. I can say this as I often listen to your WS performance on YT in the car while driving, in preference to anything else I could listen to on Spotify right now ! Really enjoy all your work on this. So inspiring. 🙂Thank you.
@@kenb7540 Thank you 😊. Cool that you enjoy my jams :-).
Modwave vs Hydrasynth, how do they compare? I have the impression that Modwave sounds a bit brighter, crunchier and more digital and the hydrasynth warmer and smoother and sounds amazing in the audiorate modulation department. But Modwave seems more fun to operate, haven’t tried any of them and are wondering about who to buy first.
Both are excellent synths with lots of depth. Both are capable of sounding warm and analog if you like. The filters are very good, modeled after analog filters. And you can add random or semi-random fluctuations in pitch and other parameters, so they can both sound very old-school if you like. The polyphonic aftertouch keyboard on the Hydrasynth is a joy to play, and very expressive. The modwave’s modulation capabilities are more powerful than the Hydrasynth’s, and I think the oscillator section on the modwave is a bit more powerful too, with lots of full wave tables, where the Hydrasynth is more limited with wave scanning. But they both pack plenty of power, and you can create a huge variety of sounds in different genres on both. I would personally be happy with either of them 😊
@@Waveformer Thanks for the answer! Sounds like I'm going for the Modwave then as I'm missing a proper wavetable synth, also better modulation capabilities is a big plus. Great jam btw and those patches are masterfully made as usual! Go Jul!
I have had my Hdrasynth for about a year, and love it. I've had the Modwave for a couple weeks, and love it even more. They are both fantastic instruments, though I believe my preference moving forward will be the Modwave.
Nice ! Sounds very nice..
Is this one better than the wavestate? Seems to be.. or what are the mayor differences? Thank you
He gave a brief answer if you read the screen starting at 28:31
My personal take (I'm not Waveformer) is: MW has oscillators made out of a queue of single cycle waves, and you can sweep thru those waves within each oscillator independent of what the sequencer is doing.
So, in the MW you get to sequence oscillators, and within each oscillator there is a series of very short waves that morphs thru different timbres, if you use a modifier to sweep thru this series. In the WS, you sequence much larger "regular old samples" such as different articulations of bowed strings or whatever you want, but you don't have the same opportunity, as you do with MW, to change the timbre (sweep through different waves) within each note. But then you can arrive in some similar places, because WS has separate sequencer lanes for timbre and pitch and rhythm etc. But the WS can't really match the very fast and granular sweeping of the MW, AFAIK. They also share similar sonics because they have the same fx, LFOs, envelopes and filters, and they were developed by the same R&D team, and MW probably incorporates whatever new techniques they learned while developing and supporting WS. You're always learning.
MW has the xy pad and the "chaos physics". Korg seems to emphasize this "motion sequencing 2.0" aspect of the MW.
If I messed any aspect of the comparison up, hopefully if it's an important aspect, someone will notice.
@@GizzyDillespee thank you!! 🙌🏻 I will
@@GizzyDillespee just now was able to read your reply and watched it again..thank you Merry Christmas
Can I change bmp... to beat match, to mix/create live ?
@@marcosa.catena6414 Yes. See the "Tap Tempo" button blinking on the upper right corner? Either by taping or via menu. Same in WS.
I’ve just purchased a modwave to go with my Wavestate, looking forward to seeing how they perform together.
That’s cool. I haven’t used them together yet :-).
did someone know how to record chords to sequencer and sync it with other gear like rhytm composer, groovebox etc? I know that sequencer is only playing if i push some keys on keyboard and hold it... in this case i need to mention arturia microfreak which seems to be much better sequencer usability for users....
@14:13 - that chord would be Abmaj7,11,13
Sounds really cool ….if you can see this …Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you too 😊
You have a lot of talent , I learnt a lot watching your videos ! What parameters are you modulating with the shape lane and how do you assign them ? I know how to do this on the Wavestate but having some difficulties getting the same results on the modwave.
I modulate portamento (for holding/repeating a note from the arp in the next step, or to glide from one note to the next on some steps) and use it to trigger envelopes (for ratcheting). It’s not a mod source directly, you have to link one (or more) of the seq lanes to it (seq a-d), and use the seq lane as mod source. That’s the same as on the Wavestate.
Thanks for your answer this makes sense will experiment with this later ! I was also wondering how you manage to have the steps of the sequencer move forward without the use of note advance. From what I see on the video note advance is turned off for most lanes.
@@morteus666 I have step length in timing lane identical to resolution in the arpeggiator, and increase amp envelope release until the arp and timing lane advance in sync. Don’t remember exact value for release, but try 0.1 sec. It was a bit fidgety. I do this because I want to be able to have note rests, so some of the arp notes are silent. I use one of the seq lanes to modulate amp envelope attack to get silence. It wasn’t straightforward. It’s easier on the Wavestate.
And make sure Motion Seq has Sync Notes set to On
@@Waveformer I appreciate you took the time to answer and explain. This really helped me figure out what I was trying to do. Thank you :)
красиво!
Hey sounds well.. Like 😎😍😎 greetings cya
Is the hold button on ? I can’t see it
I don’t use the hold button, instead I have set both arpeggiators to latch.
@@Waveformer tnx sounds great
