    Void has been the best distro I've used. Been on it for about two and a half years now.

    i've benn an Arch/Artix user for 15 years , tested Void few times, i really like all of it, besides software avaible , i know there are flatpacks , but i try not too, can u make please a video about configuring pipewire for recording videos, fresh installed void needs some tweaks so i think it will be my next longtime distro

    • @RealWaffles
      @RealWaffles  5 місяців тому

      so if you use obs pipewire should have a screen/window record option, ill see if i can make a video explaining a basic obs setup though

    idk what to feel about the package manager. is it any good? how recent are the packages, especially dev packages? do they support 3rd party repos?

    • @RealWaffles
      @RealWaffles  2 місяці тому

      package manager is pretty simple, similar syntax to arch but not the same (syu does something different)
      repos are pretty thin but have most things you need, flatpak or xbps-src for everything else
      it's a rolling release so packages are about as recent as you can hope for, but some packages like hyprland can't be done because they rely on unstable wayland
      as far as i could tell they were much better tested than arch packages, but i wouldn't call it extremely stable like gentoo or tumbleweed

      maybe a novice, it's a little complicated to get up and running but after you get audio and xorg and etc running it's very easy, the wiki is very bare but if you have critical thinking you can solve everything quite easily! good luck

      It is suitable for advanced users, I would not recommend using it before at least you are familiar with Arch/Artix, preferably Gentoo as well. Void is not that difficult from the said two, but it has less documentation and smaller community, so you will have to figure out things on your own most of the time, which will be harder if you don't have such experience in the first place.

    • @RealWaffles
      @RealWaffles  3 місяці тому

      if you're coming into it new you're probably gonna have issues. it ships more minimalist than arch which can be cool but the more complex your daily driver is the more packages you need to already know. as you get into more minimal distros, the stuff you learn in void will transfer. it's stuff you learn once and know forever, though, so giving the xfce spin a shot will teach you a lot about what packages go into your distro.

      I think Void expects you to install manually, it's like Gentoo just slimmer and faster, just the fact that they don't give you bash by default says it all, Void is a mixture of open/netbsd, gentoo and arch.

  • @G.B...
    @G.B... 13 днів тому

    runit is not only the easiest init system I've ever seen, it's also the fastest. The only problem I find in Void is it's using that crap called elogind - but then again, most (not all) non-systemd distros do the same. Personally I'd go for a distro that isn't infected by crap like systemd, pulseaudio, and elogind, But if you are ok with elogind, Void is an excellent option.

    • @RealWaffles

      yeah one of their selling points is they wrote runit themselves. its a bit too simplistic for advanced service management but simplicity itself is a good selling point.

    why don't just use Windows or Mac? i don't remember starting any services or anything on them. Why would we need to install all those services and stuff, search for some small but super annoying mistakes? i need my pc to do tasks, when i want to listen to music i turn it on and listen to music. But guys like you suggest that to listen to music, i should learn how my OS works, become a programmer and DevOps, make my own OS, tweak it and only then after about a month i can finally try to listen to smt. But there'll be bugs anyway, and the quality will not be as good as it's in mac or windows, my battery will discharge 2-3times faster unless i also install and tweak a lot of deamons. If you spend time and energy on all that, how do you have smt left for the actual task you're gonna do on that computer? Isn't it better to just use an OS that works

      You value different things then the author of this video. It is okay and use what you want.
      If you want a different perspective, I have a deep understanding of both Windows and Linux. I won't bore you with my credentials but my point is I am just as capable with both. Today, I use Linux 90% of the time for security and privacy reasons and Windows for Windows only games. It is just not worth my time to fix borked installation of window centrix games on Linux using wine or proton, however, I break a number of Microsoft services that collect information on my activities and send to Microsoft, e.g. Cortana and many others.
      Take care!

      I use Linux for the same reason a painter might mix their own paint or make their own brushes instead of buying it. I can make it however I want it, yeah it's a tool and some prefer store bought to get the job done but some of us don't mind putting in the effort to make something a bit more to our liking.
