You Can’t Save Yourself - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 січ 2025
- Friends, we come to the First Sunday of Advent-the liturgical new year. I've said this before, but Advent is a time to get back to basics. Can I suggest we start with that familiar Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”? Until we get into the spiritual space opened up by that hymn, we are not understanding Advent-and more to it, we are not understanding Christianity. We are beggars asking Emmanuel-“God with us”-to come and “ransom captive Israel.” You're in chains; you’re held captive. What can you do to save yourself? Nothing-except to cry out, “Come, come, someone, save me!”

Thank you Bishop Barron. I was an atheist and I never thought I would darken the door of a curch. I found you and listened to your perspective. It brought me to Jesus, and now I'm in the rcia program at my local parish. Thank you.
Praise God
Alleluia!! You give me encouragement. My 24 year old son says he no longer believes in God. I pray every day for his conversion and hope he can have the same experience you've had. God bless you in your studies and for sharing your story here ❤. Happy Advent,😌
Awesome testimony! God Bless You!
Amen my friend. I started listening to Bishop Barron when I was an atheist, and now I am a Christian. Listening to his videos got my foot in the door to learning more about the Lord Jesus and the life of the church, and then the Holy Spirit took it from there. Bishop Barron is such a blessing.
Your brother in Christ.
"Fall in love with Christ, stay in love with Christ; find fellowship with him, that's our salvation."
*- Bishop Robert Barron*
May Blessed Mother Mary help us. AMEN
How, what are the best ways? What should people do, first steps?
Yep
Name your sins and seek forgiveness through Baptism and Reconciliation. Forgive others. Read the Bible. and be thankful.
We need to believe in Jesus to be saved from what Jesus will do to us if we don't believe in him.
Brought tears to my eyes.
My wife abandoned my 20 years ago. I tried remarriage, it failed. It’s like I was walking through a depressed haze, that was my life. I also was a Protestant Evangelist preaching a hope that I didn’t possess but had faith God would one day give.
In a random experience, I attended my first Mass around 2018. I literally cried during the Mass.
I was Confirmed into the Church in 2020, but I still desired that intimacy and fellowship I expected to get from a marriage.
But recently, God has shown His great love in a intimacy only God is capable of giving, greater than any spouse ever could.
You’re all over this today Bishop, and your words at the very end made me know it.
Fall in love with Christ
Stay in love with Christ
Find fellowship with Him.
Beautiful story. Keep up the good fight, brother🎉❤🙏🏻 God bless
🕊🙏🏼♥️
Not trying to disrupt your walk with God but I have to speak up on a matter that is close to my own heart also. It's such a personal thing that can't be blurted out. I suggest you study the works of the nicolaitans as its mentioned in book of Revelation as a thing which Jesus hates. It's a pagan way of worshiping the greek and roman gods (with a small g that is)...it's also called the dionysian mysteries or the elusinian mysteries. Im not saying what your experiancing is not of God but beware the demonic realms are incredibly real in today's age. I will pray for you brother in Christ.
AMEN! Only in Him do we find true love. Thank you for posting. ❤
These sermons will go down in history, Bishop Barron is the Archbishop Fulton Sheen of our time.
agree
You are so correct!
Amen! And as we watch as the process of Bishop Sheen's canonization moves forward, I pray that soon we will be able to pray to Bishop Sheen as a Blessed and ultimately as a Saint. In my heart, I hope for the same, one day, for Bishop Barron. What a gift he is to the Church! ❤🙏🏼✝️🕊️
Advent is new to me at 71. I'm finding it to be very rich & soul reaching. Thank you Bishop 🙏🏻🕊🩵
I’m not even Catholic, yet I am so happy Bishop Barron is back. And in his new beautiful studio too, which is gorgeous. What a great sermon to begin the Advent season. Thank you and God bless you Bishop Barron.
Wow bishop you just talked about my old life , so true !!! 2years sober from drugs and 2 years on fire for the lord ,
Dear bishop Robert, may Christ bless your mission.
I’m Franciscan from Lithuania. We follow your teachings many years, and it helps me and my friends to grow in faith. Thanks to you 🙏🇺🇸🇱🇹🙏
So lovely to see you back Bishop Barron. Pelagianism is how I lived most of my life. It sounded so like the right way to live, but eventually I could not keep the pretence of 'happy and successful life' up. There was a deep-seated sorrow within me that just would not go away. I found myself on my knees, crying my heart out to God, asking him to please help me ... and that is when the most amazing change started to happen. "Go where He is, and stay there. Accept Him. Move into fellowship with His son." Bishop Robert Barron. Thank you 🙏. I love your new space BTW 😌.
This homily knocked it out of the park. Bravo, Bishop Barron. Really well done.
🕊🙏🏼♥️
Growing up in a very dysfunctional family which has especially reared its ugly head in the twilight years, due a brother having had a very severe addiction, I was just this very morning asking the dear Lord, "How does my heart heal from all the heartache?" And then I heard this. What a beautiful sermon, Bishop Barron. It is an answer to my prayer. I hope others will hear this message that also need such healing. God bless you, dear sir for being so filled with the Holy Spirit. ❤ 🙏
I understand, sending compassion. I’ve nearly lost my little sister three times to addiction.
She is in recovery and the best she has ever been ….. bless her heart. It starts from somewhere.❤️
I needed this so badly. Deeply moving. Thank you, Bishop Barron. “Go where he is.”
Welcome back, Bishop Barron! You have no idea how timely this sermon is for me. Thank you for driving home the true spirit of the season. Pray for me as I pray for you. God bless us all.
OK! Another challenge! It means I´ll have to listen to this semon again and again and again, Well! Nothing new, These sermons are all so rich, that listening to them just once is not enough.
Bishop Barron excellent sermon! For people with open hearts and minds, you have stirred their souls. Peace
You're back! Don't stop the online sermons. It's so good and helpful to have
Yep
🕊🙏🏼♥️
I just got one year of sobriety. I can confirm what Bishop Barron says about surrender and fellowship with Christ. I'm sober because of God, not because I conquered some kind of character defect or with psychological treatment. God did it. Not me. God.
I’m 37 and just starting to realize that in almost anything reading the same book, practicing the same sport, watching the same movie, the more times you do it the more you begin to see things that weren’t there before and that includes the mass! Totally viewing things differently and it’s amazing!
God bless you. The mass is a profundity that keeps giving.
Addiction is the result of being unable to receive love. Never having received it we are unable to give it. God is love, fill the void with the love that God gives us through the sacrifice of His only Son, Christ Jesus. ❤
Please help me and save me Jesus. I can’t do it myself. I need your grace to overcome my life of sin and loneliness. I want to change so bad. I want to follow you Jesus. Help me. Please I pray for your grace that I can better do your will and leave my selfish life behind. I can’t do anything right without Your Grace Lord.
Dear Bishop Robert Barron, I don’t have the correct words to express my gratitude. Your sermon touched deep inside. Even tough my constant prayer, there’s also no surrender in my soul, ‘cause I always think I can handle the problems. I need to cry out: oh Jesus, come be my light. God bless you for the life of yours you offerd for us. God Bless You. Thanks a lot!
I would add to Bishop Robert’s life giving teaching…Find fellowship also with other committed, Scriptue and Worship focused Catholics. Be supported, uplifted, challenged by your Brothers and Sisters in Jesus. We are the Body of Christ. We need one another. We need to be nourished by others in addition to our Celebration of the Eucharist. Trish Australia.
I think this sermon refutes the lie that Catholics believe you can work your way to heaven. Well done Bishop.
I believe Fr. Schmitz was quoting the analogy of the dysfunctional family was from Fr. Riccardo from The Rescue Project Series. I highly recommend to everyone to watch this series, it’s profoundly moving. Thank you Bishop Barron!
"Go where He is..." Do a Holy Hour in the Adoration Chapel. ❤ It is there, in the quiet, that you hear Him most!
Thanks bishop . I cried after hearing your sermon . I had given up that my Lord has forsaken me and does not hear my cries and begging for help . Pray for me , for faith
Dear Bishop Barron, I want to thank you for your Sunday reflection. I am in agreement that we need Christ as our savior and that is the beauty of celebrating this reason of Advent. We are definitely captive without him and fellowship also allows us to be co-workers with Christ immersing ourselves into His grace in drawing ourselves out of disfunction, sinfulness, and our own selfish desires and motives. It is all about Jesus!
How many of you, the listeners, watched this because your mother shared it with you? How many of you are under the age of 37? I'm trying to understand if my own children would listen if I shared this message with them.
Happiness is fleeting but joy is an experience never forgotten. Joy to the world! God Bless you, Bishop 🙏
This sermon moved me. I've been wondering how to fix my life, and being in a 12 step program for many years, you have opened my eyes again to where my savior is. Thank you Bishop Barron.

We are so Blessed to have Bishop Barron as an excellent, modern-day theologian to light our way. May God continue to Bless your ministry!
God brought me to this channel and I'm glad He did because I am learning/focusing/drawing closer to Him
Bishop Barron as well fr Mike Schmitz have been a great influence on me.
What a beautiful reflection. It touched my heart. I accepted God’s grace years ago and my life indeed was transformed! The Holy Spirit is now my ‘companion.’
Love the new set up. Thank you Bishop Barron and WOF. Always praying for you and your ministry.
Wow! That's a powerful image, the one of the family across the street. This was exactly my expreience, growing up. My birth family was deeply unhappy and divided, with emotional and physical violence part of 'normal' life. I had a girlfriend when I was 16 and her family couldn't have been more different. I longed for them to adopt me as one of them and give me a home. Thankfully, my early schooling was Catholic, which eventually helped me find my way to my true home, where Love prevails.
A new day indeed, very Dearly Venerable Bishop Barron...For more complete understanding of Advent, i thank The Lord JESUS CHRIST And Our Heavenly Father WITHIN U❣
"Without Him I could do nothing, without Him i'd surely fail; without Him I would be drifting like a ship without a sail." (Heritage Singers / Mylon Rae)

".....o come o come Emmanuel ' - May God bless you Bishop Baron for bringing the anointed Word to us !
If you were to read Isiah you would see that the Emmanuel mentioned was a kid that was born back then and not Jesus at all.
@@kevinkelly2162 The first Testament is replete with personalities who 'prefigure' the coming Messiah. Moses / Hezekiah / David, etc are previews of the coming Messiah; they are 'types' of Jesus. Moses leads the people from slavery in Eqypt; Jesus leads us all from the slavery of our sin.
Or the people that wrote the NT had access to the OT and made up the story to fit with the OT. The Emmanuel story is at face value about a child that was born long before Jesus was. And Moses is an adaption of stories that were doing the rounds in the ME at that time. He was not the first baby to be put in a basket and found by a princess. Also there are no records in Egypt about there ever have been an Israeli population staying there, slaves or free. But then again the Egyptians have no record of a flood either. These things might sound good to believers but a good look at the literature of the time will show the books of Moses are just local myths adapted to suit the Israeli narrative. The Bible is a facinating book but should not be read literally.@@NUKE.2024
What a beautiful Homily. Most of the time we just chant the words O come Emanuel without being understood about the real meaning. Now we come to realize that how lovely the words are. Thank you so much for the enlightenment bishop.🙏🙏🙏
Time to plug into the power source so that your Faith, Hope, Love and Reason (B16-Santo Subito) multiply! Viva Papa Francesco!! Go towards the Truth!
Grace to you Bishop Barron and to all that are reading.

Thank you Bishop Barron.
Bishop Barron has been a wonderful inspiration for me
"...the realization of our captivity." Perfectly said, Bishop Barron.
Thank you, and welcome back.
God bless. x
Welcome back Father 🫡!
Well said 🙏 my family missed you for the last 2 months. We are so happy to see you again.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
My baby brother died when he was 2 months old. I was in second grade and I would always be going over to a friend’s home. Now it makes since with my dysfunctional family.
God bless you
Thank you Bishop Barron it seems as though you know what I am passing through, like you are talking directly to me
THANK You father Barron ,..... Beautiful explanation & Adven .🕊️🕯️❤️🔥🙏 Blessings
Wow. It figures I would click on this. I’m an addict so I know your analogy well. We need a power greater than ourselves. ❤
God bless you too 🙏
Yes indeed Bishop! And in knowing we are called to bring God and His love to the rest of the world. I needed to hear this, this way. A better focus, thank you so very much. Blessings be upon you this 1st Sunday of Advent and always, and anyone on here as well. Ciao for now.
Wow !! Bishop Barron, truly blessed to here this sermon. This 2023 new year sermon, you blew my mind with the coincidence. And now as the Advent comes, and this year is closing, it is marvelous to hear about the Grace from God to ransom captive soul. This whole year for me was about personal battle relying mostly on my own strength to fight the inner spiritual battle and failing miserably. At the end of September I prayed for Grace from God and I totally abandoned my fight and handing over the fight to God.
It was a miracle. My mind blew away . So far it is working!!! And I first could literally experience Grace as a Reality, just as real as sun and the moon. With Grace, the fight is so easy and light. But ofcourse the door for backsliding is always open, but with willful intention to backslide.
With Grace, the fight is not violent. I feel a protective shield, but yes the door is always kept open if I would willfully prefer to fall back again. Here I can see myself co-operating with Grace so far now. This concept of Grace, I am experiencing for the first time with such reality. Yes, I heard of Grace previously , but not in action in reality of my experience.
Next thing that blew my mind from Bishop Barron's sermon was that I just thought a few hours ago of "taking step with Jesus as i follow Him. There need not worry about next day. He leads step by step. Stay with Him while He leads you through His Grace". It is just mind-blowing to hear the same in the Sermon !!!.
Just as New year's sermon blew my mind, today's Advent sermon blew my mind speaking of Grace and the importance of Staying where Jesus is !!!
Thank you Bishop !❤
Praised be the LORD ✨
This homily was so emotional for me. Our family is going through such a difficult time right now and these words truly spoke to me.
I’m sorry , just lean into the love ….fall down into it …let go into utter love ….
Thank you Bishop Barron ✝️🕊️🙏
Great wisdom and grace. Thank you for clearly simplifying the need of Christ in our lives!
Great service Bishop Baron, It helps me to understand Advent Better. ❤😅 Thank you.
Powerful sermon. Thank you bishop Barron 🙏
Your sermon rekindles the soul amidst all the noises around us. May God bless you and your ministry. 🙏
You nailed it again bish
Thank you, Bishop Barron. What a wonderful anology of the dysfuncitonal family and the Graced family across the street whose father knocks upon our door. Be well, Bishop Barron.
Im liking the new set Bishop B.
Thank you Bishop . Great sermon and fantastic job on Word on Fire . God. bless you and your ministry . Ann from Malaysia .
Came to believe that only a Higher Power could restore us to sanity.
Beatiful sermon, thank you Bishop Barron
Bishop Barron, your ending words......Fall in love with Jesus and stay in fellowship with Him are profound, yet simple. Really going to that place for me gives feelings of groundedness, inner peace and humbleness....as though I am sitting in God's light. In today's world of chaos with war, divisiveness in the Catholic Church, political power punches, etc. it's more challenging at times to filter out the world's turmoil so as to truly get to that place of fellowship with our Heavenly Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Sometimes prayer life doesn't yield the depth I seek but I continue. You and your messages help to guide.
Thank you ❤
And bless you too ❤🙏
Thank you Bishop! Welcome back.
Beautiful sermon like always . Thank you Bishop Barron ! ❤🙏
Just what I needed to hear
Thank you Bishop Barron. It made me ponder what is it about me that I can change for Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Jesus is the reason for the season as they say.
