In the US Army the Green Berets are special forces. They're known as force multipliers. Their job is to go behind the lines to set up resistance against the enemy - be it political or otherwise. They will train and equip local forces into a cohesive unit to fight with as well as using the area as a launching point for their own missions.
The US Army has 4 units that are considered elite, in order US Army Rangers, US Army Green Berets, and Delta Force (who has used more then a dozen different names). The 4th is the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment known as SOAR or the Nightstalkers. The Navy has Special Warfare Combat Combatants and US Navy SeALS. The Air Force has the Special Tactics Squadron, the Pararescue Jumpers and the Tactical Air Control Party. The Marines have the Raiders and Force Recon.

To add on to this, the Rangers are a purely direct action unit, meaning they take the fight to enemy with raids, ambushes, air field seizures, etc. Delta Force is like the NZ SASR, meant for hostage rescue and other highly specialized missions. 70% of Delta Operators come from the Rangers, the rest out of Special Forces and other units.

My dad served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and served two tours in Vietnam. His Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) was mechanic. He repaired tanks and retrieved non-operational tanks during combat. He applied to be a door gunner for the choppers but was told his MOS made him too valuable as the death rate of the door gunners was extremely high.

His callsign Tango Mike Mike is the military phonetic alphabet; here they meant That Mad Mexican! U.S. Army Special Forces, aka Green Berets, are at their most basic mission to be what is called force multipliers. The classic Operational Detachment A-Team (ODA-A) is composed of 12-men: a Captain in command, a Special Forces Warrant Officer second in command, a master sergeant (E-8) team sergeant, and then nine remaining Sergeants of varying ranks who represent different skills: light & heavy weapons, demolitions, medical, communications, intelligence, engineering. The team can have two of each specialty, plus there is cross-training. The general concept is to train indigenous forces, thus the many skills needed. But direct-action and reconnaissance missions are also performed. Some may recall the movie "12 Strong" about the SF unit that went into Afghanistan immediately to work with the Northern Alliance against the Taliban. They serve primarily as advisors, but also then have access to air strikes and other power the local forces typically don't have. In this video, notice the troops in contact were a patrol 3 Americans and 9 native Montagnards. The first Green Berets into Vietnam were referred to as Advisors.

He stood over it and came down with his first right in the center and the bucket split basically exploded from him hitting it. That is something I never forgot. He passed away a few years ago from cancer that my friend told me they think he got from agent orange. He had so many medals that my friend got after his death that I got to see. Funny, but worth mentioning. . .
My fiancé is a United States Marine, and he has received 2 Purple Hearts. He’s been through hell… beyond the atrocity of combat, he has suffered. He has been stabbed through the abdomen with the enemy’s bayonet, he has suffered TBI (traumatic brain injury) amongst many other things. He would do ANYTHING for ANYONE, whether he knows you personally, or not.
Knowing all this, I started this video and asked him, “hey babe, what’s a Green Beret?”
His response went a little something like this…

“Guh… it’s the damn Army, babe.”

Back in the 60s there was a hit song, The Ballad of the Green Berets, by Barry Sadler, which gives an idea of how the Green Berets saw themselves, as Sadler was an active-duty Green Beret himself at the time. This was during the Vietnam conflict, when a lot of people in the peace movement had a pretty bad image of the military in general, and the army sent Sadler out to perform his song on TV in full uniform as a public relations measure.

I am sure someone explained but in case: a green beret is specisl forces. Each branch of military -arm, navy, ect has its elite - the special forces. Like navy's is the seals. Green beret is army.
You should really listen the the classic american song - the ballad of the green beret. It celebrates these men's devotion

If you're an enlisted soldier who'd like to become a Green Beret, though, you must:
Have a pay grade of at least E-3.
Be able to get a secret clearance.
Be airborne qualified - or volunteer for the training.
Have an ASVAB general technical score of at least 110.
Serve for at least 36 months after graduating from training.
    Being multi lingual also helps.

Imagine...your personnel clerk gets mad at the higher-up because they made awards given based off rank. So he changed the gender of everyone. I was hounded for a couple of months by special forces. Then they figured out I was female...so when I made Sargeant they asked if I was willing to think about it. Oh and their chow at Ft Bragg was the best one on post.

Green Berets are U.S. Special Forces. People often confuse SF with SOF, Special Operations, which are Rangers, and Navy SEALs, Pararescue and some others. Then you have tier 1 groups, which are another level entirely.

They don't make them like they used to. That kind of mental fortitude is so rare. But honestly go through all of the American Medal Of Honor recipients and it's unbelievable the things these men did to protect their brother's in arms. Hearing each of their stories you just can't help but feel humbled by men like Roy Benavidez.

My dad is a retired SF guy (Green Beret) Green Berets are the special forces for the Army ( Seals are special forces for the Navy) The main differences is the Seals are a mote direct action SF team. GREEN Berets have a wider scope and are know as a force multiplier...meaning they go in for months at a time before the general public know anyobe is there. They figure out friend from foe's amoung the indeginious ppl and trian them to fight. In Vietnam they had the yards...similar to our native americans. A 12 man tram would break into pairs of 2 with 6-8 yards meaning that 1 -12 man team became 6 - 8/10 man treams. You ought to watch his speech! Its 30 min long which is an eternity on youtube but he is such a good speaker you wont notice the time! Great reaction!

"Sgt Barry Sadler - Ballad of the Green Berets 1966"
My dad was Air Force in the 50's and I was born in 1960. (Today, July 4th is my 63 Bday.)
The grade school I attended as a young lad had a music program that was mandatory for every student. We learned all the military songs and even performed for our parents after a PTA meeting sometimes. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. Thunder only happens when it's raining...

Another amazing hero you should look at is the actor Audie Murphy. He was the most decorated American soldier in WWII. In fact he is still the most highly decorated soldier in US history. His exploits are made even more impressive when you consider that he was only 5 feet 5 inches tall {165cm} and slightly built. And, at 19 years old held the rank of 2nd lieutenant. He played himself in the movie TO HELL AND BACK.

Roy Benavidez lived in my now ex-wife's hometown and we lived there from 1980 to 1990. In this small town, Roy could often be seen jogging , and wore short shorts with a T-shirt. There was not a square inch on his arms and legs that was not horribly scarred, and yet, there he was, jogging around town.

The Green Berets are the colloquial name for the US Army Special Forces. Their expertise is in counterinsurgency, demolitions, behind enemy lines deployment, extreme survival, amongst other things.
To give you an example of a Green Beret mission: deploy behind enemy lines and meet with a faction known to be hostile to the enemy. Arm them, train them and then lead them into battle. This is of course extremely dangerous and once discovered, a Green Beret operator's life would be forfeit. They often have to survive in areas with little to no logistical support, they usually have to communicate with locals in their own language and then they have to train and lead these insurgents into daring operations, while still deep inside enemy territory.
If that all sounds hard...yeah, it is.

I had never heard of this story until now and thanks for you and everyone else who suggested it. Thanks to those who informed about all the different units from each: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, & Navy as I think most Americans have never known of all these specialist forces we have in U.S. You really should do a video about your own New Zealand guys.

My dad did three tours in Vietnam in the Marines and had mortar shrapnel and a grenade hit him. He still had four pieces of metal in his arm and back for 30 years until he got cancer around a couple of the pieces and they finally removed them. They just stitched him up in the field, and they went on. No choice.

    A little history for you.
The Medal Of Honor is the highest award given to US military members. It's been awarded 3535 times with 19 people being awarded it twice.
Only 65 people who have received the MOH are living today. Military tradition dictates that all uniformed service members salute Medal of Honor recipients, regardless of rank. Even the most senior military officer will participate in this tradition out of respect for the sacrifices the recipients made.
Most people who are awarded the medal do not survive the events that grant the medal.
All of their stories have the flavor of superhuman effort and sacrifice.

MACVSOG is the most badass group in history. These guys went in behind enemy lines in places we weren't supposed to be with small 6-10 man teams. There is a great podcast series called sogcast with real sog members from Vietnam. There's also lots of books written by former team members. The best I've found are "we few" and "wispers in the tall grass" by nick brokhausen. They are absolutely incredible true stories
