I was honestly a bit hesitant about the content but when I started getting into it I understood how accurate this was immediately. Personally I’m in between lines 2 and 3 and learning how important board choice becomes when progressing to more critical lines. And what a coincidence, the boards that really seem to be working for me and the ones I’m looking at are right in the range of those recommended for these two lines.
Clay thankyou for this series, I'm in the midst of analysing which board to move to next, I'm getting my midlength back to the pocket, only to find I have too much board to manoeuvre back out to the shoulder. Thanks for this and the rest of the wisdom you have shared!
There are a few variables like you local break is it hollow or a slow rolling wave. Are you tall and skinny or tall and build like the Rock. Fitness levels and skill levels and then add fear into the mix. Chatting with knowledgeable shaper is always good
Hi. Moving on from my 7'6 fun board and find myself in this level of surfing so this is the perfect video! Quick question; I'm looking to get a fish hybrid and I'm stuck between deciding on a 6'10 or 7'2 as I don't want the jump from my 7'6 to feel too fast!
@ombesurf but that's the thing that because there might be still one or two sections before it closes out, that if lucky, there's still room to go vertical and snap it but when there's some size and the crowd (could be seals lol) and the tide changing so quick etc and what not it's hard to tell when you can make it or not anyways yeap nose to the beach I'm afraid I guess and I need extra legs for such bottom turn lol
@ombesurf that's the thing at the end you nailed it cuz if only nose to the beach which is what common sense says if it's a closeout which is let say 80% chance then it's too late if it's dunno 3ft+ hawaian included but still being a closeout there is a chance of at least doing a floater and then going with the white water so not making the full bottom turn can give that extra second so to being able to hit it right before it breaks cuz we're talking already some decent power in those set waves etc so yeap and short waves no long waves messy beach break with crazy spring tides. A dilema
Hi Clayton, the surfers living nearby and able to follow your courses/camps can consider themselves very lucky. Keep up the great work! I'm a 6'7" 225 lbs. intermediate surfe in decent shape, having had a board custom made for smaller to medium sized waves, easy to paddle in and make turns. It has a wing swallow tail, rather round nose, 7'3", 22", 2 7/8", 50L I feel it allows for decent turns for my level. I also have a new 7'2" mid, based on the CI Mid model, which I'll try in 2 weeks and hopefully should allow for faster surfing on rail. Do these measurements make sense to you given my size and level? Especially I'm concerned about the width, with the thinking that taller people should have wider boards (pendulum concept - surfing on rail). Would really appreciate your feedback!
@@ombesurf Thank you! Unfortunately, I don't have any video but I'm planning to go to a surf pool soon where I'll be able to have access to footage. Cheers.
Do you have any recommendations in the FireWire line or similar for this stage? Been looking at reviews on sweet potatoes, seaside and beyond, larger seasides, Sundays, mashups… I’m 45 years old, 155 lbs, 5’8”. Trying to find the right board to move to. I’ve been surfing for years in small shore breaks on 6’4 short boards, just because that was always the old 90’s advice as a kid “get one that about this much taller than you and go” and because short boards looked cooler so that’s what we got. Then I bought a foamie to teach my wife and found it so easy to paddle that it spoiled me and upped my wave count so much that I’ve switched to having fun on it and figured I’d learn a little bit of the long board style, . But now I am seeing the thick rails hindering my turning, as you describe, and after watching a bunch of your vids, I’m trying to relearn the right way and so I’m probably at your line 2 stage needing my next board. Appreciate all the great content and any advice you may have on boards to try next.
Ride a more refined version of what you normally ride that offers both paddle power and manoeuvring. If you go too extreme they jump back can be frustrating
Love the explanation regarding the different tails and the intention behind each of them! I went with round-tail for my first midlength after hearing Clayton talk about the ease of turning. Decent nose-rocker, hard rails, quad setup. It’s basically a progression machine🔥
I was surfing a few days ago and one of surfers mentioned to me about your channel. He said I can learn a lot from it! After a few videos i feel like I making a big steps towards surfing and I started understand a way more better than before🏄🏼♂️ Very informative and entertaining. I just started surfing recently and sometimes I feel I need a UA-cam mentor and I believe I found one!☝️ 🤙🏽
is the Line 2 boards a softboards or hard boards? I’m considering to buy my first board very soon just not sure which is one should I get. I managed to think what shape & size I want, just not sure with soft or hard board. I usually surf in the wave pool, waves are here 2-3ft. Sometimes I go on the sea side to catch bigger waves. I’m intermediate level, practicing turns now. No problem with popping up at all. Doing well so far, I’m goofy, surf on the left side and can easily make a turn on the left side however sometimes I struggle to turn on the right side and gain more speed. But I’m getting there. I surf constantly 3/4 times per week so I’m progressing quite fast. Recently I jumped from 7.6ft to 7ft board, it’s a soft board. Very thick and wide. Nose are not narrow. It feels more responsive than 7.6ft but sometimes it’s hard to turn because the rail and nose goes underwater when I try to turn. I’m thinking should I switch to hard board instead ? On my radar I have two options: www.boardshop.co.uk/torq-x-channel-islands-x-lite-m23-surfboard-7ft-0-futures-sand-rail-pinline www.boardshop.co.uk/nsp-elements-funboard-surfboard-7ft-2-package-white www.boardshop.co.uk/torq-mod-fun-surfboard-package-7ft-2-white-pinline Let me know please what u think, I hope to get an advice! It will be my first board and I’m willing to spend decent amount of money for it, a bit nervous 😅 By the way I’m 5ft8 , 75kg, fit.
I grew up surfing in the 60s and 70s Nobody and I mean nobody showed us how to surf or what board Please man up Just do it And figure it out for yourselves This is like coddling and babblyining people Figure it out on your own and just go 4 it and just do it.use your own brain It's called thinking

Glad you took the time to invest in the right knowledge. Enjoy the journey
this is top notch and basically free we're not aware enough how lucky we are
Love this series of videos! 🫶
Thanks
Looking forward to boards for line 3!!!🎉 amazing series thanks!
Finally some good explanations of some of the things. Wish I had found this series a few days earlier. Enlightening!
Glad it was helpful!
you guys are great! soon or later I will try to book a camp with you. Im sure it's a life-changer experience
Please do! Best investment in your surfing
Loved this one, thanks a lot!!, Very clear. Thinking about how you would explain top and bottom turns ...
That’s line 3 on the cards in editing

It’s knowing what to do and when with Midlength and also creating space for the turns
Best explanations on the internet. Well done. One thing I'd like to know is choosing the ideal length of the board in this range? Based on height?

Go the 6’10 as you need to learn positioning, padding and turning
Would be invaluable to get your explanation and take on epoxy vs poly considering conditions and what we wanna achieve on the wave🤩
Noted
pleaseee keep goingi love those

I need the "surfing closeouts" video asap 😁 can't find it anywhere

Is there anything volumewise that differs for surf pools vs ocean Boards?
Personally I don’t change volume but I do prefer wider tail as there is not much push from the lip
Woohoo. Thanks for the info . For us weekend warriors. Is practicing with the Surfskate in the bowl the fastest way to progress from line to line?
Nah buying high performance boards is the best way to progress
100% yes
No the fastest way is to surf every day
It develops your trust and fills in the missing data on what to do when you take these lines in water
@@Pinetatoe That's one of the worst ways to progress.
