It's always darkest before the dawn. Take solace in small gains. Every athlete, I mean every athlete goes through tough times. I remember Zeno M. telling me there were times in his career where he experienced the lowest of the lows. He then went on to win a Gold and Silver in two different Olympics. The toughest things in life are the things most worth fighting for. For those that can persevere through the tunnel of darkness, and never give up, the promise of personal achievement is all but guaranteed. It's always been the journey and not the destination that is Life's gift!
As you said. You are confident you can get back. And yet, Its more mental than physical. the key phrase I heard was "I have the opportunities [to go and train]". What makes the difference between whether we take them or not. Its internal. For me, the question is "What do I really want". You row at a level beyond that which I have ever, and I really appreciate getting to come along for the ride. From the times when I got something I really really wanted, I always remember how much I wanted it. When I wanted a seat in the 8 boat "was I willing to do what it takes to put in the time and the effort to get it and keep it regardless". The rest of the time I find I give myself so many excuses. Thanks for your honesty and for taking the time to make these videos.
I really appreciate your openness about how you are feeling when it would surely be easy to hide away. One thing I think that sets great sportspeople apart is their ability to be positive in the face of setbacks. You've got that quality in bucket loads. Having said that I'd echo some of the suggestions below; are you sure there's nothing wrong physically ? can you and Callum improve your technique in any way ? can you improve your diet ? what can you do differently to make the difference between now and April ? And are there any easy wins to give you a quick boost ? e.g. have you got a soft 1k erg pb you could smash tomorrow ? Go Cam, the #yamsquad are all behind you.
Hi Jo, appreciate your message. I don't think there is anything wrong physically, we can definitely work on out technique, diet can always improve but that isn't the issue. Like I said in the video, Callum and I know what we have to do and we have set out a plan to get there!
Cam - You’re a beast! I’m sorry you’re feeling like this, I felt similarly post 2018 US trials but you have the backing ability and tenacity to persist. You are definitely in the process, train is on the tracks, just keep at it. Do not yield! All of us here are rooting for you. Bernardo M.
Cameron, “the greatest teacher, failure is” Yoda I know failure intimately, and it has pissed me off for decades, but in the end, I have persevered and conquered. Keep it up kiddo, success is right around the corner.
Hearing what you've said has reminded me of a quote I quite like.. "It's not how many times you fall down......It's how many times you get up.." Awwwww Yeeeaah!!!! 🍠🍠🍠🍠🍠🍠🍠🍠🍠
Sorry to hear that. Keep the quality mileage going in the pair. Watching the videos, looks like you guys generate extraordinary power, with potential room to improve even more technically, Best of luck, rooting for you and Calum
It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! It always sucks when you have bad erg tests, it can really get you down. What separates normal athletes from elite athletes is the mental aspect. It doesn't matter if you go 5:35 or 8:20, if you don't have the right mental attitude that will make or break you. So, don't get down on yourself and show GB and the #yamsquad what you are capable of.
Cam, just remember that a setback is a set-up for a comeback...... my go to saying for these situations. I’ve competed at World champs in my sport, we all go through these times. Move on, bigger & better times ahead.
Chin up guys. Its all about April. You have the power and fitness. From looking at the video posted yesterday the stroke looks laboured. Legs going down fast blade not so much. At your level technique is the only difference from the guys at the top. Keep grinding you will come good in fonal trials!
What kind of selection system do you have in UK ? I figure it's cruel, because there is such a large pool of talent. What if you totally tank all the erg test and do good enough on the water ?
Sad to hear this. Still, you can do a lot between now and April. It sounds like you've got a good "growth mindset", so keep your head up and listen to your coaches.
@@CameronBuchan Another thing to keep in mind is that every Olympic cycle crews get faster as the cycle progresses and so what was good enough back in 2017, will probably not cut it in 2019 or 2020. This may sound like bad news but if you think about it, it proves that progress is still possible and we've still not exceeded our potential. Take advantage of every improvement you can (legally!!), and I believe you can get there.
Cam , far be it from me to give an athlete like you advice . However , do you track macros on your diet ? Do you have set macros an on eat to perform basis ? I’ve heard you say many times that food is fuel but a more exacting diet can only improve performance.
So, tough day. A lot of pressure to be under. I'll send a hearty, backslapping man hug. Others in the comments have said kind and wise things. "Chin up!" as my father used to say.
Cam you are overtrained, sounds like it! Take some time off the erg and off the boat, crosstrain, and recharge. Then come back stronger! Easier said...eh?
If you don't make the squad this year would you consider identifying as a woman and trialling for the GB women's squad? I think the IOC rules say you only have to do it for a year to be eligible to compete. You'd just need to bang a load of hormones for 12 months and hopefully still be able to pull like a 6:20 by the end of it and you'd be straight in. You and Mairi could even do the double together
No matter what happens, we are always behind you.

Definitely Chris! It is a choice. Always easier when you're having fun! But if it was easy alot more people would do it too!
I really appreciate the fact that you don't hide anything. An elite athlete who is grounded! I'll be rooting for you like always!
When it hurts, hurt it back.
keep going dude, you got the whole of the #yamsquad behind you
No matter how many times you "fail" we will always be behind you
Positive mental attitude - exercise is good for you! My mums motto that she chants when walking. I love your outlook!

The bigger the fall the bigger the comeback.

There are ups and downs

There are a few tests througout the year. Eventually it comes down to the head coaches choice
U are a Legend brouu
Keep fighting Cam

Oh I definitely agree with that. I'm not where I was boat wise in 2017 though, just strength and fitness is further on! 💪

Hi Andrew. I loosely keep track of what I eat and there is definitely room for improvement in my diet!
Do you feel you are mainly getting the pacing wrong, Cameron? Have you ruled out anything physical post-Sierra Nevada?
I wouldn't say there is a pacing issue. Regarding post SN probably the only thing that would officially rule anything out would be blood tests!
I feel you bro times are tough, lets fuckin smash 2019 now
I just saw the link and haven't watched the video yet and the title has me thinking "Ah shit man, gutted" Lets see how it develops.

Took time to relax over the weekend. Definitely made a difference!
Are you talking to your coach ?
Always! 💪
