I enlisted in June 1972 with hopes of going to Vietnam, and almost every NCO I spoke to told me "Son you do not want to go there."
I remained adamant, though never went, later finding out how fortunate I had been in not going.
Even after a 20-year career and my deployments, my heroes will always be my mentors the Vietnam veterans and my father who served during WW2 and Korea.

I break down with strong emotions when I hear about the 173rd. My next door farm neighbor, draftee Alex Zsigo, was killed at the Battle of the Slopes with the 173rd in June of 1967. The NVA shot the wounded in the head with shotguns. Zsigo's death devastated his father and mother.
As a drafted, disabled, and Republic of Vietnam combat '68, I got my draft notice the month Zsigo was killed. My mother was not happy. My brother was a Cobra pilot in Vietnam after I served. I had another younger brother serve in the Army Rangers. He has TBI from a jump at Bragg.
On our way from Detroit to Fort Knox, we stopped in Cleveland on the way South, one of the new Ohio guys, Joseph Zagorski, being less than a day in the Army, was killed hanging outside the train door as we went through a tunnel.

No matter how many Vets that share with us, each one will bring NEW , sometimes SHOCKING details not previously heard, or even considered? Rod REALLY brought to light the HORROR of friendly fire. I always pictured it a rare occurrence. NEVER the percentages He spoke of?. 99.99% of the Vets always give some "trigger" that will instantly send them back to the war, like a chopper, fireworks, car backfire, etc. Rod's VERY unique answer " NOTHING HERE could ever trigger being THERE", was really "chilling"? Theres several Vietnam Vets I REALLY WISH could be RE interviewed sharing their percpective on "events" that lead us to where we are TODAY? Rod is definelty one of them...GREAT line of questioning Larry!

Being born in 1978 we looked up to the Vietnam vets. I want to let all the men who served know that there was a generation of men who idolized them. I thank them all for their service and hold these men in the highest esteem. I've heard stories of the way they were treated when they came home, and it enrages me. These men are all heroes. They answered a call. They weren't policy makers, but they fought a war with one arm tied behind their back with no clear objectives.

The Royal Australian Regiment 1st Battalion, 1RAR arrived in Vietnam throughout March-June, 1965. It was deployed to the United States Bien Hoa Air Base in Bien Hoa province. It was the third infantry battalion attached to the US 173rd Airborne Brigade.
Initially, 1RAR was restricted to security operations defending the airbase. However, in September 1965, the Australian government lifted these restrictions, and 1RAR was able to be fully employed as a manoeuvre battalion. It participated in search and destroy missions, patrolling and security operations. 1RAR's patrol program reduced enemy activity around the Bien Hoa Airbase to an all-time low.
In early 1966 1RAR was involved in Operation Crimp (8-14 January). This was a search-and-destroy operation in the Hobo Woods, north of Saigon. During Crimp, 1RAR uncovered the Cu Chi tunnel complex. A search of the tunnels resulted in the capture of thousands of documents, weapons and supplies.
As a result of its superior patrolling and contact tactics, 1RAR was asked by the US 1st Infantry Division ("The Big Red One") to participate in Operation Rolling Stone (19-26 February). The battalion provided security for US army engineers who were building a road. Once the operation had finished the battalion returned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
1RAR was relieved by the First Australian Task Force (1ATF) during May-June 1966. It returned to Australia in June.
