  • On November 8th, 1965, the 173rd Airborne Brigade on Operation Hump, War Zone D in Vietnam were ambushed by over 1200 V.C. Forty-eight American soldiers lost their lives that day. Severely wounded and risking his own life, Lawrence Joll, a medic, was the first living black man since the Spanish-American War to receive the United States Medal of Honor for saving so many lives in the midst of battle that day. Our friend, Nialls Harris, retired 25 years, United States Army (the guy who gave Big Kenny his top hat) was one of the wounded who lived. This song is his story. Caught in the action of 'kill or be killed' - 'greater love hath no man to lay down his life for a friend.'

It was my honor to write, produce, direct and score this story. After 35 years of work, I can't say I'm any more proud of a piece of work than this one. John, Kenny, Marc and, most of all, Niles...thank you for the opportunity and the memory of a lifetime. G

Thank you for giving at least a small part of honor and respect to those of the 173rd. This ungrateful Country to this day still has not given those brave men the honor and respect they as well as all those who served in Nam that they so rightfully earned and deserve.

Thank you for such a wonderful well-written thought out piece of work. If I knew how to contact Mr Dave was directly I would if for nothing else than to say thank you. My great-uncle was there with him. Unfortunately... He didn't make it back. But he died for what he believed in. At any rate.. Thank you again.

I'd heard this song before, but this is the first time I've seen the documentary. I'm a combat vet and was in Vietnam in 69 and 70 with the 4th Infantry Division. I was also wounded in an ambush, so this brought back a flood a memories. Thanks to everyone who worked on this project, it meant a lot to me and I'm sure to the families who's sons and husbands didn't make it home. God Bless you and those who served.

As a daughter to a man that served in Vietnam, you have all my respect. Both my parents were in the US Army. My father was in Vietnam as a Cobra pilot, my mother was personnel in Desert Storm and I was in OIF. I am fortunate to live in the DC area (only cause I can visit the Memorials). I know that I will never understand what my parents went through, just like they will never understand what I went through, but we are very proud to stand together as prior Military members that served our country to the best of our ability. May all the ones that dont make it home rest in peace.

It's about making that other person die for their belief we live for ours. Yes we lose our brothers and sisters. But they live on through us. unortuntly with the military they only like to document the sucess and not the defeats/ failures. but its also the reason why we continue to make the same mistakes over and over in combat. i served in iraq and would here about failed missions and ambushes. we would have debriefings rarley on what not to do. and yet the next day told to the very thing that got a fellow soldier killed. then only to get hit and either have injuries and at times deaths. nevr made any sense to me and most others. but its the order. politcal corectness and selfeshness is entrenched in the military these days. most will do anything to make sure thye get the promotion or medal, even if they dont deserve it. this all got real bad with the troop surge in 08, to the point the military started purging ranks in 2010. but alot of good soldiers where let go, for soldiers who played the politics. bottom line is we will never learn and they rarley will document failures.

I just watched John rich on temples Tim cast IRL show since his team he and his team are in Nashville for the week. And during the cat feedback, one of the members mentioned just documentary. So of course, I just had to watch it. I'm a Navy veteran myself, and it's nice to see artists to Vietnam vet the attention they deserve. They are badass and theirs.

This was incredible to watch, thank-you all for increasing my understanding of this time 1000%. The entire thing got me, but I have to say at the end, when there was an image of young man struck down, and laying on the ground that I suddenly saw my own sons in his place, and realized in a personal way at that moment how horrible it was. There aren't words to say what these men went through, and I thank them very much, as well as Big and Rich for going above and beyond in writing this song.

Any front-line soldier tells a different story & lives a different life for his brothers, that only another soldier would understand. I am of a Service today but the respect is no different. Great honoring ur brothers Niles....I standfast for you. Cheers

My dad was in Vietnam, not sure what year it was. They pulled him out, he was a sharp shooter, they put him at Guantanamo Bay Cuba (USMC). He never talked about Vietnam or Guantanamo Bay Cuba. He said, " The shit he seen would make a person cringe." He would not talk about it. He did tell me he hated leaving his brothers behind in the jungle to go to Guantanamo. He told me he would rather be in Nam then Cuba. He said, "The Jungle was friendlier." I don't know what he seen or what y'all seen but my hat goes off to y'all for your service.

They can't make it through the song without breaking down. My gratitude for the sacrifice of the men who fought in all of our wars , is immeasurable. JEFF, I could not agree with you more. With all the resources we had in Vietnam if we would have been let go to win the war it would have been over in a year but instead the politicians decided to micromanage it. Their meddling in an area they knew nothing about directly caused many deaths of US servicemen and women. I served during the Vietnam and post Vietnam War. Never ever go to war but if we have to - go all out to win and let the soldiers do what they have prepared to - it's not for people who do not understand to be part of - but use it only as a last resort. People die and it is not a fucking video game. JP - 11B; (3/6, 2/17 ; 3/504. )

All the “older” guys were ‘Dad’ or ‘Pops’ or something to reflect age. Not enough months or couple of years to make any difference, but this was just how things were in ‘Nam. Bunch of kids, barely out of HS and college age kids, suffering over there in that. My Gunny pulled three tours from ‘67-‘70 and was 17 when he went in. His uncle signed for him to go.
