I am a big fan of your steel playing and recently discovered a great video of a presentation you did with Lloyd Green many years ago. Your playing was just phenomenal and you showed great deference to Lloyd's playing as well.
I watch this over and over and over... Tommy is such a great communicator, explaining things in detail, yet relatable to a novice. I'd love to see you do a similar video on the steel... obviously MUCH more complicated, but I think people would appreciate your knowledge and explanation. Thanks Tommy!!
The resophonic guitar in this video was donated to the “Kentucky Music Hall of Fame when I was honored to be inducted last year! Please check the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame site! It is so great!
Very cool history lesson and showcase. The dobro is one of my favorite tones off of any instrument and I love delta blues and bluegrass. Love some slide guitar too and ABB will always be my favorite band to ever do it. Looking at purchasing one of these and a bass soon to get back into playing music which is something I havent done in a long time and miss greatly. First time on the channel and one I will definitely be keeping up with. Great work!
I bought a Gretsch boxcar from a guy that said he wanted to learn to play Curtis Loew but couldn’t figure it out. When I picked the guitar up and tuned it like a dobro is suppose to be tuned, he said, “oh, you tune it differently?” I sort of felt bad…. Sort of
It’s great to discover your channel Tommy! I play a little steel and I am a huge fan. Bless you both for doing this and I look forward to seeing more posts soon!!!
Hey Tommy! What a great video! I also play Dobro now, in addition to pedal steel and I love it! I've been playing Dobro for almost three years now, and I play at jam sessions a lot!
Always enjoy your steel guitar playing.. just floors me. I do play Dobro some and steel some. I'm just a fair player but enjoy it. Was on the road many years as a bass player for Helen Cornelius, Tom T, Freddie Hart, and several others. Now I'm learning to play instruments I aways wanted to but never had time. God Bless
I love the sound of a dobro. Thanks for giving us some information concerning. I could sit and listen to you play and figure out the tune. I enjoy the variety on your channel. I know the chicken and bologna smoking had to smell so yummy.
Hey Tommy thanks so much. I love the sound of a dobro. Brings back a lot of memories! I know you are too young but I'm sure your Dad would remember Junie Brumfield who played with Olabelle & Alex Campbell & the New River Ranch Boys. He was a fantastic dobro player. He lived a few miles from me. He also had a barber shop so was well known locally. Thank you so much & look forward to hearing more music. Unfortunately we cant get the station you play on. You & Theresa enjoy that bologna & chicken.
Thank you so much Virginia! I do remember some of the folks dad played music with. I was thinking Junie Gilliam? I’ve been in Nashville over 30 years and sadly lost touch with so many of dad’s friend. Sure do appreciate you subscribing and commenting!
Not only is Tommy a phenomenal pedal steel player, but he is world class on resonator too. I have a bluegrass album that I bought in Nashville that has Tommy on Dobro. He's just a brilliant musician.
A great informative video. Thank u 4 your time. I looking to purchase a Dobro, though I’m a wind instrument musician, looking to branch out to the strings. Very nice video! Professional guitar player over here and I will get a dobro this week. We would love to meet you guys when we are nearby.. you guys are so friendly, dinner is on us for shure! Much love
Dopyeras (Doprejovci) were migrants from Slovakia that came into US in 1920s. Also dobro its kind of universal word in slavic languages that means `Good`.Im glad that invention of my fellow countrymen played a big role in evolution of bluegrass and country music.
10 years old 1976, I was out in the country collecting soda bottles at 10 cents a piece, to return to the local country store . I was in the store returning bottles to buy coke , candy , and a comic book , about $1-2 . I had $2-3 in bottle money. Old black man drifter was in the store, never had seen him before , asked if I/we could buy him a drink , for a song, it was Summer in Mississippi. I bought the guy a quart of beer for 50-75 cents. We went behind the store where he had his "luggage" , and he got out a dobro and played it on slide, and proceeded to belt out a few obscure blues songs. 🤔😎🙂 We/me left that day, but that guy came back at least once to that small store over the next year. And it was the same thing. Buy dude a beer/wine and listen to killer blues , at 3 ' away. 😎 I fully believe "Curtis Lowe " like in the Lynyrd Snynrd song , never died, I met/saw/heard him 20 years later, after "They chucked him in the grave". I saw, been in presence of the dude and heard him play guitar and sing twice, out beside the back wall of a country store. And like "Forrest Gump" , "And that is all I can say about a Dubro and slide guitar". Or you to me. LOL 😎. Resonating guitars are visually striking besides acoustically. "Play me song Curtis Lowe, I got your drinkin' money , tune up you Dobro"" 🙂
excellent video Tommy I would like to see one of these days you play the song cry cry darling on the pedal steel for me that would be a great dream for me 🥰

Technique and "expert skill" is one thing, but playing from the soul and conveying that groove to the world is quite another. I choose soul over technique.
Hey Tommy, where ya at? If'n I ever get around yer circle, I'll bring my Beard. I'm in Michigan, so I hope we're not too far away. Thanks man, God Bless.
This was great. I got hear you play and I learned what this is called now. Resonophonic guitar. (I think) 😂 It does have a unique sound to it. Best wishes.
Just bought a new Fender FR50. Don't have a clue as to how to play it! Gonna take me awhile to learn to play from scratch. Hope I don't get frustrated & quit!
thank you for the video sir. I am actually from the same country as the "Dopyera brothers", Slovak republic, so I am watching your video out of patriotic interests haha. god bless
Your welcome Tommy looked some of your videos up just great 😁 all the best from bonny Scotland 🏴. +UK 🇬🇧 been dabbling with dobro and psg for bout 6yrs now nothing great still learning every day is a school day .56 yes now main instrument double bass in rockabilly band playing since I was 14yrs bands called Rockville (.Scot .com) not played in couple of years due to covid 🤷 but 10months ago was inolved in work related accident ..air bags burst under fuel tanker when I was unloading it lost some hearing /permanent tinnitus and hearing aids rest of life l,ost my mojo for playing at mo was just great when u popped up on my tube gave me some hope .maybe take my dobro off the wall some day and give it a pick soon it's a regal also ...use all take care keep posting And playing 👍👏👏👏👏🥃🏴🇺🇲
Thank you for the video and information. As part of my mid-life crisis I've decided to learn an instrument and have decided on the square neck resonator. There are no places where I live (Boise, ID) that have them so I'll have to buy one online. What kind of cone do you have in yours? I'm trying to figure out what type of cone to get and a good place online to purchase one. Any information or advice you could pass on would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great playing.
Tommy, thank you so much for teaching us about this beautiful instrument. My Dad passed away last year and he left me his guitar...It is apparently a Dobro. It actually has the Dobro name on it. It has been sitting in a guitar case for about 50 years at my Aunt's house. It looks like it is good condition with the exception that it looks like someone (maybe her) put some material small square sheets (cotton or linen) in the case absorb humidity and it left a residue on it front and back in the shape of the material (about 12" square). I think I can clean it off, but I am afraid to touch it. I know nothing of musical instruments. But with old guns the rule is not to restore it unless you know what you are doing. I assume the same applies to vintage instruments. Any suggestions? Thank you Sir.
So sorry your dad passed. Glad you have your dads real Dobro! They are prized and cherished instruments. For cleaning, I would try Pledge furniture clean polish. If it doesn’t remove the spots it will not harm finish or sound. You have a very nice instrument there! Thank you so much for sharing the story!😊
I have a Regal but its not as pretty as yours... Its beautiful! I gotta find some of those black thumb picks! I'm a NOBRO player, lol Do you play GDBGDB tuning or do you also play open D tuning? Love you brother!
Actually the Dobro brand is owned by Gibson and manufactured by Epiphone in Indonesia. The Indonesians make great guitars the Hummingbird is a good example hopefully the Dobro is too .
I recommend any squareneck resophonic guitar from saga! You can’t go wrong! Please pray and send love to Nashville shooting victims! It will mean so much!
I didn't breathe properly at birth and got some brain damage which I still live with today. I love music 🎶 but the only thing I managed to play was the Harmonica which the Doctor recommended for my breathing. I played it until I was 50 and people said I was as good as some pros! I bought ALL of Charlie McCoys recordings. (Not good as him) I was invited to play at a Church Revival and when we ate some snacks a fellow with MS sat across from me. He asked me if I played any other instruments. He played the Dobro but he said his health is getting worse and was selling his instruments. He said I'm asking $300 for my Dobro. I told him I can't play a stringed 🪕 instrument. I'm unable to move my left hand fingers independently. He said this is just what you need as you fret with a metal bar! After the show he gave me ONE lesson on where the cords are. I got some advice from other players for six months until i felt confident to play. I'm 79 now and I figured out how to string a Banjo and Steel 🎸 Guitar so I could fretbar it. I play at Churches - Care homes and Senior Centers. All because a person worse than me told me not to give up! I'm sure he's dead now but his don't quit attitude still lives in me!! To see old people get up out of their wheelchairs and shuffle their feet and come tell me they enjoyed our music and come back is something 💰 can't buy!
Hey y'all!!! Working security today so catching up on some videos. I think Tommy is famous. LOL There sure are a lot of videos of him benden them strangs or slidin them strangs.
Cooper, this particular style cannot but, there is a dobro model that can be played as an acoustic guitar. They are called fretted round neck resonator guitars! Thank you so much for watching and commenting !
Regal black walnut with Quarterman sound cone. It is not a laminated / plywood guitar. It is true solid walnut top, back and sides. My favorite guitar! Thank you for asking!😊
Terry, a squareneck is dedicated to playing with a steel slide bar as slide guitar. The round neck is dedicated to playing as a finger fretted instrument like a regular guitar.
I am a big fan of your steel playing and recently discovered a great video of a

I'm trying to figure out what type of cone to get and a good place online to purchase one. Any information or advice you could pass on would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great playing.
I have a KAY, love it, SUBBED
Steel ?
I learned something!
I though the necks were Steel on electric steel?
You got it! That is a common misconception!
@@TMeAdventures Thank you so much. I will try that today. Thank you for taking the time to help me.
Whose the neighbor dog? So cute!
Who cracked the sound hole. If you get it glued down and filled it won’t be so noticeable
I did that by trying to remove the hole screens. Dumb move on my part except , it does sound fatter and louder!
How can you tell if it is a good doebro
That is one Beautiful Dobro.CAN I HAVE IT.? I CANT AFFORD ONE LIKE THAT.
I have a Regal but its not as pretty as yours... Its beautiful! I gotta find some of those black thumb picks! I'm a NOBRO player, lol
Do you play GDBGDB tuning or do you also play open D tuning?
Love you brother!
Hey James, this is Tommy, I play the G tuning.
Thanks Tommy I appreciate it.
There are two types of dobro a round neck and square neck both are resophonic, dobro are still on the go and ownd by Gibson bought a dobro yesterday
Thank you for watching and commenting! Even though Gibson owns the Dobro name they haven’t produced any resophonic guitars in over 10 years.
@@TMeAdventures they make them under Epiphone , have done for quite a while
Was this type used for the Rockford Files theme?
Yes! It was a fretted resophonic guitar. Very similar to slide dobro! Great ears you have there!👍🏻
@TMeAdventures thank you. Great video by the way! Love the channel
Actually the Dobro brand is owned by Gibson and manufactured by Epiphone in Indonesia. The Indonesians make great guitars the Hummingbird is a good example hopefully the Dobro is too .
Tony, thank you for the information. I did know Gibson owns Dobro brand, just haven’t seen any in years. Again, thank you so much!
Sir, which Regal lap resonator model would you recommend for a beginner?
I recommend any squareneck resophonic guitar from saga! You can’t go wrong! Please pray and send love to Nashville shooting victims! It will mean so much!
As with everything you do Tommy ... TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
I didn't breathe properly at birth and got some brain damage which I still live with today.
I love music 🎶 but the only thing I managed to play was the Harmonica which the
Doctor recommended for my breathing. I played it until I was 50 and people said I was as
good as some pros! I bought ALL of Charlie McCoys recordings. (Not good as him)
I was invited to play at a Church Revival and when we ate some snacks a fellow with
MS sat across from me.
To see old people get up out of their wheelchairs and shuffle their feet
and come tell me they enjoyed our music and come back is
something 💰 can't buy!
Very cool
Thank you sir!😊
What caused the damage around the one resonator hole?
A tragic knock over of a heavy music stand!🤕
You can’t play the blues till you’ve lived the blues.
Who hasn’t?
Thanks for telling us about this instrument!
Hey y'all!!! Working security today so catching up on some videos. I think Tommy is famous. LOL There sure are a lot of videos of him benden them strangs or slidin them strangs.
Randy! Those strangs are meant for a bendin’!😂
Is a slide guitar and a dobro the same guitars
Not exactly the same but, kin to each other!
smoked bologna??? that sounds good lol … never tried it , but I bet you it’s good
Yep! Smoked bologne! Hillbilly steak!😂
" ... play that guitar boy ... "
Well Pieter, I’m not the best but, I’m not the worst!😂Thank you for watching and commenting! Please share our channel! Again, thank you!
Im buy this and play the l4d2 dobro danger theme
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! Dobro!👍🏻😊
You are good👍
Thanks 😁
Can you play it like an acoustic?
Cooper, this particular style cannot but, there is a dobro model that can be played as an acoustic guitar. They are called fretted round neck resonator guitars! Thank you so much for watching and commenting !
Can you play it like a normal guitar?
No, it cannot be played like a guitar with your fingers. The strings are raised up from the neck making it only playable with a slide bar.
That guitar neck is wider than my bed😅
Like the mighty Mississippi !😂
What type of dobro is that
Regal black walnut with Quarterman sound cone. It is not a laminated / plywood guitar. It is true solid walnut top, back and sides. My favorite guitar! Thank you for asking!😊
What is the model of this dobro?
Regal RD 40
@@TMeAdventures is there a difference between the square neck and round neck?
Terry, a squareneck is dedicated to playing with a steel slide bar as slide guitar. The round neck is dedicated to playing as a finger fretted instrument like a regular guitar.
@@TMeAdventures thank you so much!!!
Ballad of Curtis Lowe , Lynyrd Skynyrd 2nd album I got your drinking money tune up your dobro. Ronnie Van Zant Allen Co llins
