John's not wrong though the best thing to do is look after yourself when you're in a situation where you can't trust anyone and everybody's out to get you you got to trust yourself you got to trust your instincts. He is a broken man. He has lost everything he cares about and since then lacked the ability to express care for anyone. Even the people grew to love. He became cold and ruthless to survive and never let that part of him go. Terry isn’t broken but just down right vicious. He is willing to do whatever it takes to win and has shed all of his attachments to do so.
