- Fellow Patriots & Freedom lovers, I was peacefully exercising my 1st Amendment Rights at the United States Post Office in Princeton, West Virginia when the entire Post Office seemed to go crazy over a camera! The Princeton Police was called, and they said I needed to stop recording because people were uncomfortable and that if they wanted to violate my rights and kick me out they could. We know what they’re saying when they say “in this day and age” is they are acknowledging all the mass shootings that happen daily. @@robertreilly8982 although it does say on poster 7 that you can record and photograph on the property except where it says that you can't. And the atrium or lobby is not one of those places. Or if there is a court order to restrict video taping. So he is right that he can video the lobby. Like taping the sidewalk. Tho I do agree some are aggressive in demeanor, it is their right to be. Noone has a responsibility to be polite all the time.
It kills me when people are like ‘can I help you?’ and you answer literally like ‘no. I’m good.’ Then people are confounded because you didn’t tell them what you are doing. 😆

Poster seven has been out for years. There also was a memo sent out to all post offices, explaining poster, seven and First Amendment auditors right to photograph in the post office. Why are there supervisors out there that do not know the rules❓
Probably due to turnover. At the hospital where I work, I was taught to answer the phone with “Pharmacy, this is (name), how may I help you?”
But that boss, the next boss, and the next next boss have all come and gone. Now my coworkers answer the phone by saying “Pharmacy.”

I live in the area, this is my hometown, and this is not surprising in the least very bit. We are harassed, profiled, and bullied by local government agencies. The town population is so small that they will pull every sting, go to any length to infringe upon your rights. I really want to conduct other audits around the area and check up on some of the property us taxpayers have been paying for. Ill be sending you an email very shortly sir! Honestly though, Calvin's clear and concise 180 was one of the most non-egotistical reversals I can remember seeing. I think he was really trying to do the right thing without letting his emotions run away with him and admitted his mistake like a man, with a handshake.

After the audits in post offices, I imagined that their workers would be educated about poster 7, but it looks like they just don’t care.
That police captain knew the gist but, having failed his subordinates, ran away as fast as possible.
They don't care because they can joke around. They have great jobs, great state salaries, all the privileges that public workers have, and they still don't have enough. And if it said "filming allowed", they would ask pointless questions and call the police, who are even worse than they are.
You can lead a person to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

He wasnt a postmaster, he was supervisor on duty. He called his postmaster after calling the cops and was promptly informed of the rights citizens have.

When they say “You have to understand”, that means they have no law to back up what they are doing.

This has become absolutely ridiculous! And is a perfect example of just how incompetent our government is. Why the post master general has not put out a federal memorandum to all postal staff in the country, reiterating that filming in a post office is 100% legal and also constitutionally protected activity, is absolutely beyond me at this point. Unless, the only other explanation, is that they have no intention of honoring and protecting the Constitution and our protected activity to do so in a federal public building. Neither explanation makes them look competent in any way. Shameful and sad☹️
Maybe Sean should start a petition to have a postage stamp commemorating 1st amendment auditors. My list of honorees would include Sean, Amaganset & Jeff Grey. Who else?
Probably because they really don't want people video recording, so most people who are told "do not record, it's against the law", will just stop recording. If it gets escalated, then the higher-ups can inform them that it "technically" is OK to do it, because at that point they are dealing with someone who most likely knows their rights. There is rarely any repercussions to violating rights temporarily like this, even most judges would probably look at that as a minor infraction and just dismiss it. Of course, that is wrong, because all those people who might be recording who don't know their rights, just have there rights violated. Like the person who just wants to take pictures of his documents before he mails them, or wants to document handing over packages to the post office as proof, etc. This is all legal, but many of them may have been told they cannot do it.
EDIT: Just as a follow-up. Note that poster 7 explicitly says that "press" can record without permission, but I'm not sure that "press" is that clearly defined. Can you take video for your own personal use and still be considered "press"? What if you are an independent journalist but the video you took just wasn't sold to anyone, like a TV news station, can it be argued that it wasn't disseminated so you are not "press"?

If you made a movie about this, it would be ridiculed for its over-the-top acting but it literally happened and it is on film.

The conduct of the postal employees sets the tone and also dictates how the customers in there react. These postal fools had the chance to make themselves look good and keep the patrons calm and in check, but they chose to incite the reaction they got.
This place desperately requires a revisit and will definitely be receiving feedback.

Love this one! It was SO apparent the supervisor spoke to someone higher-up and was educated about public photography inside the post office. What an attitude change. And that captain couldn't have been more apathetic and unfriendly. Totally burned out and not a great value for hard working tax payers who pay his salary. This one is classic Sean. Great job!

Thirty years as a Postmaster and I can’t believe we still have employees that haven’t received training on public photography and Poster 7. If tubby didn’t think he had a bad attitude I’d hate to see how he acts without cameras recording.
