  • A selection of some of the 39 species of birds that visit my garden. I have gradually changed my urban aback garden into a wildlife friendly area by adding water features, fruit and berry bushes & trees and letting the ivy cover the fence, trees and back of the house. I have introduced a rough grass area and encouraged wild flowers such as trefoil, knapweed, nettles & teasel to grow. By year round feeding & adding nest boxes I have recorded 39 different species of birds including predators, which I suppose is a sign of a well stocked wildlife garden.

    I appreciate the time and effort it takes to put this up. Beautiful footage of our feathered friends. We must do all we can to make sure they can live alongside us.

    A great video - thanks for putting it together. A sparrowhalk is rare in a garden. Likes high vantage points and to be out-of-sight. Had one take out a bird behind my house - but it was more rough ground than a garden.

    Beautiful video, you must have a brilliant wildlife garden. Unfortunately I life in a flat where 3 flats all own a small piece of grass, I have managed to get a feeder station, bird table and a few potted plants and have managed to attract about 22 species in total but certainly no goldcrests or warblers of any description. Very well done indeed, you’ve created something special.

    I have tried to provide birds & wildlife with as many of their basic needs as possible, namely shelter, food and water. I have gradually changed my garden area by adding water features, fruit and berry bushes & trees & letting the ivy cover the fence, & back of the house. I have added nest boxes and feed the birds all year round with top quality seed mixes, plus Nyjer seed, Sunflower hearts, Raisins, Peanut Granules, Suit Blocks, Apples in the winter & most important of all Live Mealworms.

      Thank you so much for your very generous comments, and yes I am working on a longer version at the moment. Here in Virginia in the United States, we just had a major snow storm that deposited about 15" of snow over the yard. I have been keeping my one hanging feeder filled and sprinkling food on the patio, as well.
    Being snowed in has given me time to watch and keep track of the birds here. In just the last few days, I have seen Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, White-Breasted Nuthatches, Downy Woodpeckers, Carolina Wrens, Eastern Bluebirds, Snowbirds, White-Throated Sparrows, Virginia Cardinals, English Sparrows, Mourning Doves and one solitary Song Sparrow. Those are just the birds that have been actively feeding up near the house.
    Feeding and watching birds can bring a never-ending source of delight.

    Beautiful video Maurice. I am based in Kerry for last couple of years and have tried to encourage garden birds to visit - quite a few species you have are not common here e.g. woodpecker..otherwise seeing most here over the year. Right now (Nov-Feb) a huge number of siskins feeding on peanuts. Such a joy to watch every morning with 1st coffee on patio! I appreciate your advice on planting teasel etc..will do that next - have a 1/2 acre of scrubby boggy land with nothing but weeds/reeds - if you have had such tremendous success in an urban garden my chances should be good! Well done again and thanks for sharing!

      Thank you for your very kind comments. I try to do what I can to share are more crowded space, this side of the pond, with the birds and wildlife. I assume by where you live that there must be much more space for wildlife and probably a greater number of species as well.

    • @RandomButtonPusher
      @RandomButtonPusher 9 років тому

      Maurice Baker I live in what's called the Northern Highlands of Wisconsin, not too far south of Lake Superior, maybe a 90 minute drive at its closest. Lots of space for wildlife, with state and national forests surrounding our small town, but you certainly do very well on the range of species you have attracted to your garden. Our winter visitors at our feeders and garden flower seed-heads have been hairy and downy woodpeckers, white- and red-breasted nuthatches, chickadees, starlings, pine siskins, redpolls, bluejays, mourning doves, and gold finches. There are owls about, but only heard hooting at night, not seen. Been a while since we've had a hawk pinching a songbird among the backyard pines. On the ground, we have cottontail rabbits and grey squirrels, and I think some voles working under the snow pack.
      Just retired myself and know what it's like and how much work goes into reshaping a yard into a garden and habitat. Been a project of many years for me. I took more than a ton of sod out of the small front garden alone. I hate mowing grass.
