Dacre Disaster! BMW F800GS, Africa Twin and Husky 701 Fail.

- The Dacre is billed as the "Longest Day". 24 Hours to do 950 of road, dirt and trail. Super Dave on his BMW F800GS, Marc on his Honda Africa Twin and Riley on his Husqvarna 701 decided to give it a shot. Actually our game plan was to do half. We were doing the Bronze route which was the route open to bikes over 500 CC. Gold and Silver were for the hardcore guys on 250s! Ivan, Eric and Pat would also be there forming a second team, the Scooby Gang. They wanted to finish! Right away we had an issue. At tech inspection it was noticed that Marc's rear wheel had some play. We managed to scrounge a bearing and changed them in the oppressive heat. The start is ta 4 Am. After a short sweaty nap we started. It was a very different experience to be riding trails in the pitch black. Initially Dave led as he had extra lights on the 800. He started having GPS power issues so Riley took the lead. The 701 headlight was not up to the task so Marc would break trail. Marc was climbing a modest hill when the rear wheel of the big Honda skipped sideways on a route. It was a fall like a thousand before it except this time Marc was writhing in agony. The ride was over.

What a cool adventure. And what a cool bunch of friends. Pack out what you packed in, I love that.
Thanks Fred. We didn't shoot the truck ride home but it was actually a fun 4 hour drive.
Hi guys! That was a pleasure meet you at the Dacre! My DRZ did great to the end with the new clutch. That was a great event with my Scooby Gang team. Hope to see you somewhere in a trail!
Hey Eric. Thanks for the wheel bearing help. Cheers.
great to have help from friends...greetings from Germany....
The nature of these rides is such that I wouldn't do them if I didn't know I could depend on the guys I'm with.
Brought a tear to my eye. Poor... Riley having to do all that work to help Mark walk out. 🤣
Kidding aside that looked nasty! Glad Mark's doin better these days!
Marc is 107% now. Just planning our first big ride together for May.
Nooo.... I thought it was sunday. Ready for 2 hours live, booster and snack ready. :-D Well, see you tomorrow then :-)
Pål Kønig See you tomorrow
You guys are awesome for sharing these videos with us. Hope Mark is back on the bike soon.
Marc is riding again and should be playing hockey again next season.
Best video I have yet to see! Now that I have, Oscar worthy!
I sense upcoming disappointment....
Yeah, the communicators overstate their range bigtime. Nice vid!
The range issue was one thing. My real beef was with features like the first generation mesh that were totally unsuitable for real world use. This summer my Sena 30K has finally been pretty solid.
@@AwesomePlayers Hmm interesting, I haven't had experience with the Sena personally. Our riding group went with the CARDO system, no complaints really other than the devices running out of battery before their advertised run time, still get around 8 hours of use. The range seems good enough 95% of the time, but if a rider disappears around a bend or over a hill they tend to lose comm, will reconnect automatically when in range again.
@@Scorge120 My buddy's moto club are on Cardo and he says they work great. They are only on the road though and usually pretty close together. Since the Mesh 2.0 upgrade I think Sena has caught up.
Sense of humour unscathed!
He is a Player!
@@AwesomePlayers No doubt ! He has a spare parts bin knee now. God almighty. Keep up the good fight Mark !!
Great effort team! We're glad Marc is okay. Congrats to Ivan, Eric and Pat! We were hoping to try this year but most likely won't happen due to the world circumstances.
Sum4Seb Not sure yet what will be cancelled. First three events we signed up for are gone.
Nice stuff on the finish! I can attest to Marc hopping along great these days. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple weeks ago when he traded this Africa Twin in at my local dealership for his new weapon of choice. I've become the happy owner of the Africa Twin...had I watched this video first I might have paid less ;-)
Marc certainly rides his bikes but he does take really good care of them.
@@AwesomePlayers ;-) - that's for sure. I'm loving it.
Very cool video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow, that sucked for Marc! Glad to hear he has recovered.
Hi Bill. Hope you and the family are well. He was all ready to start the new season... now he is waiting like the rest of us.
That crutch was awesome!
Walked into the woods right behind our tents and there it was. Karma!
Bit late now to say sorry to Mark.. but yeah.. ouch buddy...
Well done to the other group for finishing the event.. top effort!
Marc is always willing to accept sympathy. I will pass it along.
HOME BY NOON 😉
Doesn't happen as often. We go out less often and ride longer these days.
Ha, Ha, Ha ....
Good on you guys for giving it a go but that 701 is about the only qualified bike as the GS and Africa Twin are long haul ADV bikes and more suitable to street and gravel roads as i'm sure you guys already know. I just hope he gets off that Africa Twin when he goes back out as that bike is heavy and a handful on trails - same goes for the GS. Wish you guys all the best and your buddy a speedy recovery.
The Bronze is doable on a bigger bike. top guys this year were on an F800 and a T7 in that class. They were both much better riders than anyone in my group though. For Silver smaller is a necessity and for Gold you better be almost a Pro. Marc is all healed up and has a T7 now.
I loved the last comment... home by noon.
Just like the old days.....
Wow Dave's headlight puts out some impressive light see it form 100's of yards away even when he is travelling away.
He had two aux LED lights as well. Made a huge difference.
Been looking at knee braces the last few days, pondering on if I really need them ........after watching that.......yes yes I do.
Yup. We all do.
Checked with my insurance, they are covered 100% , have a fitting for custom braces tomorrow. I'll let you know how I find them.
In off roading they are more important than a back protector.
the pinning is why i just picked up a DR650 for trail riding. ADV bikes are great but the potential for injury is just so much higher. i'm a lot braver on a lighter dr650 as well, hehe. my ADV already took out my collarbone last november so i'd rather not repeat that till at least this november at minimum.
Problem with smaller bikes is you then do more aggressive trails. I went down to the Husqvarna 701 and don't feel any safer in some respects as I am tackling trails I never would have on the F800.
@@AwesomePlayers fair enough guy, that's a fair point.
You have to admit it: the poor Mark was sacrified just to have a valid reason to go home after 50 km (or miles, or meter). 😆
"Never in the history so fews (one) made so much for so many (two)"
We sabotaged his rear wheel bearing but he found that. Never did find the other modifications we made.... insert evil laugh here....
One of these days, you guys needa seriously try out Cardo instead... insane range, zero hassle setup, zero hassle reconnects... tried Sena, always felt like it was lacking... Got a Cardo PackTalk Bold, and BOOM everything I wished the Sena would do, it did and more... Swap out, you'll never regret it..
New Sena's with the updated firmware are working really well. Finally delivering on the promise. We have probably 8 Sena's in our crew so switching would be tough.
What a cool event. Thanks for sharing and hope you try it again. I think Dave was used to riding with the loose wheel bearing and you guys messed him up by changing it.
Might explain what happened. He was used to the bike leaning all by itself.
@@AwesomePlayers glad Marc is ok, great attitude.900 km , that's crazy no way I would be able to complete such a course. Lots of respect to the boys that did.Looking forward to the pod cast.
@@anibalvictoria8008 Ivan, Erik and Pat are hardcore for sure. 900 kms on the road would be tough enough for me these days.
Ouch. That's the reason I don't like riding alone...
Certainly would want an InReach or other safety beacon if I was going out solo.
Hi Guys, thank you to post this video, it's useful to keep in mind that safety should go at first and to be aware of the injuries can happen sometimes, i am glad to hear that Mark is ok now! After watching this video i am going to reash my 20$ knee pads and go in the market to get some better knee protections but is a jungle, could you suggest some models to take as a reference?
On a budget I am wearing the Leatt Z-Frame. Marc is doing a bunch of research on inflatable vests right now. He has been bitten by the safety bug it seems.

@@AwesomePlayers thank you!!!!!
I have done that recently. A broken thumb and three broken ribs.
efs83dws Sometimes you do have to pay the piper it seems.
Lol always pack your trash 😂
Yes. Especially when they are your friends!
Just enough time to pour some coffee.
I hope there was booster!
Hi from Germany...👍
Hi Michael. We seem to have a lot of viewers from Germany these days. Cheers.
@@AwesomePlayers 👍
@@AwesomePlayers I can confirm it. 😊
Disaster? Failure? Pain? I’m in.
Thats just the part where we had travel with Dave in the truck for three and half hours....
Poor Mark
!!!
He was a real trooper.
Ah, brutal.. knee braces are a must on those big bikes. We made it only to 200km before one of our buddies drowned his bmw.. I just regret not attempting to make it half way, even if our team was officially out of the rally
that sucks. Might try again but probably not. I was not super impressed by the facilities. Compared to other events the setup was pretty crappy.
Awesome Players I’m definitely going back. I care about the ride most of all and before we stopped I was in heaven.. my dilemma is if I should attempt the Bronze again or try the Iron first. Need to check what the rest of the guys think. Wish I had a group as close as yours. Keep it up guys, love the videos
@@achilleastaxildaris229 Part of the problem for me is that I can only sneak away for a few events each year so I have to be picky. The Dacre is competing for my time and money and would need to step up their game. If you look at whats available in Quebec, Ontario, NY and Vermont it is a buyer's market.
Knee braces!
We are all on the knee brace band wagon now!
That is exactly what I want to say. Even much, much younger guys in offroading were nee braces. Strange that event organizer didn't make it mandatory. They are invented to prevent injuries just like this one.
I wish him fast recovery , take care ....
@@AwesomePlayers knee brace, chest armour is a good idea too(i'm a hypocrite, i bought some last year but I haven't worn it once.. been rockin the t-shirt full body protection). Thanks for the video though, i'm ordering some knee braces right now. Of all places knees are the closest to danger on a motorcycle..
20:51 ouch :///
It was not good. Luckily Marc is all healed up and ready to ride now.
love it but we are all supposed to be locked down ... as I am since like the past 3 weeks.
We are locked down. Just editing videos from last year to pass the time.
@@AwesomePlayers so you have time to add Chris Birch overtaken by you via special effects.
Husky 701 Fail?
I was just part of the overall fail.
When Husky was leading my screen went black and got sound only .....
Was worried about my computer for a second .....
@@istra70 Sorry for the scare!
Outch !...
It was hard to see in the footage but Marc's face right after the fall was pretty grim.
@@AwesomePlayers and i must say good response from you by going getting the truck and going back for him 👍
I hate waiting...
I would say it will be worth it but I'm trying to be more honest in 2020....
@@AwesomePlayers Worth it. Suppose this serves as a warning to not slip out for a ride during a pandemic...
@@bob92313 yup. I guess a scoot around the block won't hurt much but anything that might require a hospital visit would be a bad idea.
The dude with the Africa should really consider changing his bike to something lighter if that is the type of riding he will do. He is not very big and he is getting older. Should pick up a KLR or something similar in size tops, and no luggage bags or top cases on the trail lol. Accidents can and will happen, but the big heavy bikes don't help in that regard.
Klr landing on him would have been just as bad
@@chrisredfield3240 All your talk is just a speculation.
With a lighter bike maybe he wouldn't have fallen in the first place. Fact is a lighter bike is easier to manage on the hard stuff.
@@nikolaystoykov9413 all talk is just speculation I think he was just unlucky. What he was doing was well within the reach of the Africa twin.
@@chrisredfield3240 Read the last sentence of my last comment.. read more, write less. We are not talking about the bike, but about the bike and the rider in combination.
I hope you are joking, a KLR is grossly the same weight as an Africa Twin. Marc was just unlucky and I would choose an AT for any kind of riding before a KLR.
where is your bumble bee
Flew away. It was very sad.
