I love that you asked if we had any tips for you. You are so humble and it’s lovely. The fact that you said you hardly know what you’re doing is oddly comforting to me as an artist. Thank you for sharing your processes with us!
Many UA-camr artists are showing or making tutorials of textures but those lessons are limited but this tutorial is the key to all kinds of textures tnxs for that jono
One of the most underrated artist on youtube. The day i start my channel. I'll refer him in my every hyper-realistic content. He's my inspiration in this field of drawing.
You're reminding me of the current art piece I am working on. A Kraken in water crushing a boat... Water, octopus skin, boat textures, even the stormy sky... none of these things are what I normally draw...Procrastination is a HUGE problem for me, so learning how to dive in is something most artists don't realize in terms of how important it is. I really do hope i can learn so much more from you! Even as a colored pencil artist myself, the beauty and transparency about your content still helps artists like me out. Thank you again for this!
So generous with your expertise. Thank you. When I am daunted with a new drawing, I work on it for 5 minutes. Maybe I do 5 minutes several times a day. I find my desire to work longer at one sitting comes naturally.
I'm sure you'll get on top of your frustrating slow learning curve though and you'll be hazaaring your ass off. Patience, practice and be gentle with yourself :D good luck I totally believe you'll get it
I feel that you've helped me turn a corner with my hyper-realistic drawing. I get so anxious when I have a drawing to do with a new texture and I put off starting. You've made me realise that it's an exciting learning experience to be welcomed. The insights into the methods you use and how they vary depending on the form of highlights are so helpful... now I can't wait for morning to come so I can get started on creating new textures. Thank you for taking the time to help us.
Textures are one of the most things that make the art that an artist produce to make it a hyper one. And the most hard one to learn and you just told us the solution tnxs jono!🙏
Your words, tips and encouragement are helping me become a better artist. This video has helped me so much! I WAS going too fast. You have given me permission to sloooooow down and realize I’m not supposed to already know how to draw every texture, every part. See, I thought I was, so I got frustrated. You admitting your own insecurities has helped me with mine. Thank you for your transparency, your thoughtfulness to your art and for sharing your incredible talent with us. What a gift you are...✌️☺️
You are just a fantastic artist. The realism in your sketches / drawings are awe inspiring and every time I try to replicate a work of yours - I fail miserably trying to get the feel and the texture of the drawing - so I end up doing just the outlines and important stuff - and gosh they look just BLAND. Your pieces are just too too good 👍
I'm an on and off artist, I haven't been doing well mentally recently, but your videos have invigorated an old passion again. I decided to order supplies and re-introduce myself to drawing. I haven't finished a project in more than a year but I'm close to finishing something .:) I forgot how fulfilling it is to spend hours out of a day on a project. I'm happy to feel a sense of passion in something again, and hope to stay consistent this time. Thank you for inspiring me.
Finally! I don't know why , but whenever you post a video i get a tiny spark in my chest and the excitement i feel is just indescribable. Honestly i really needed this and i hope you would make the next video soon ! (P.S.: I finally received my print of August!! It's just beautiful)
Jono, I think even a cheap airbrush might be a great way to replace your air can technique and probably save you some money! I know those cans cost can add up and with an airbrush you can adjust the air pressure as well as other features and they can be very affordable! Thanks for sharing your techniques!
Wow, all I can say is wow! This is literally the best tutorial I have ever seen! This answers so many important questions that I had! Overall this is a very helpful video, thanks!
Didn't even watch the entire video yet and I am already liking the video Dude your work is unreal ..crazy stuff ... you make me appreciate the process of art All the way from south Africa
Thank you.... this is so informative and inspiring. If you don't know, go for it knowing you don't know so that you are not fearful of mistakes....awesome ✌✌
Can you please make a video on how to make a blur drawing? Like a portrait photography with blur background (not focused).. Been trying to draw but it's not working properly ... Need a hint please
I’d love to see you master white feathers, mainly because that’s what I’m working on 😂, it’s been difficult to perfect the low contrast of a dove on a black background. I’ve seen most realism artist do feathers but they almost always do birds with colors other than white, allowing for high contrasts . And also!! Juno I discovered activated charcoal works great for going even deeper in black than graphite, I use a activated charcoal that was meant for teeth but the cotton wool and paper grabs it beautifully
Hi Jono, great video and extremely helpful as creating textures that look real is always a challenge! I wonder if you ever use white highlighting pens or white Charcoal pencils to accentuate your highlights? Thanks so much for sharing 😊
As usual, very informative jono! I hope the next video will be about the grid method that you use for your large scale artworks. Amazing video as always!

Hey Jono, I'm a HUGE fan here in Pretoria... I love your work and you REALLY inspire me everyday!! I have a question... How has Covid-19 affected your art career?
Thanks for awesome tips! Just a recommendation that you should increase volume in your videos sometimes it's hard to understand what you are saying and have to read captions.
Thank you for this! I have a little trouble hearing everything you say though, maybe you could lower the volume of the music in the background for the next vid? Thanks again for giving tips!
Hello. If by any chance you see this, I have a question if you please. How do you maintain vision on such a large canvas with no reference? It’s incredible and I’d love to know.
Hello :) I definitely use my own reference image as I draw. I created this image myself before I started drawing it so it is always available to me. Drawings like this can take weeks to months to draw so you need a reference because your light is always changing etc Hope this helps!
Yes I do! My prints are available on my website here www.jonodryart.com/prints and you can get in touch if interested in one of the original pieces. Have a great day and thank you for the support
Thank you, Bruno! This video explains the tools I use ua-cam.com/video/-qqjLY3lCSo/v-deo.html 🙂 I use Arches Aquarelle 300 gsm hot pressed satin grain paper.
Do you use a projector to draw & map out the basic sketch? Or is it all just free handed? I always use a projector to get the basic outline down so it’s all in proportion. Just wondering what you do
Hi Jono! I have a question regarding use of linseed oil with graphite powder... I tried this method and I really love the contrast I was able to achieve BUT now that my work has completely dried I notice some serious yellowing of paper. The paper is completely yellow on the reverse side of the paper where the linseed oil was applied and on the drawing side of paper it has spread out some 1-2 cm of the place s where i applied linseed oil so the yellowing has affected some highlights. So my question is if you have noticed the same problems on your works and do you have some idea if i am doing anything wrong? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!! (I used the same Arches 300g hot press paper and purified linseed oil)
I am so sorry to hear that! I have not experienced any yellowing. Maybe you need to use slightly less oil? I used to use turpentine as my solvent in a well-ventilated space. This may work better for you :)
@@JonoDry alright, i'll try to use less oil. Cause i did apply quite a generous amount of it :) Hopefully it will work, because the contrast working with linseed oil is just amazing. Thank you again, Jono.
Thanks Jono! It's so hard to get good texture! I'm working on a cat portrait in color pencils for a friend now and it seems impossible to get the feel of the fur! Much Love!
Is this process something that you do while you're creating one of your large works or do you have a sketch book where you experiment on textures before committing to them?
How do you deal with smudging. I love drawing but find the extent to which I smudge the work with my hand really frustrating. Also what do you use to fix the work?
I love that you asked if we had any tips for you. You are so humble and it’s lovely. The fact that you said you hardly know what you’re doing is oddly comforting to me as an artist. Thank you for sharing your processes with us!
