There have been a lot of my subscribers asking me to do a review on the Whole 30 Diet. Now, if you've gone into your local grocery store, you've probably seen a Whole 30 book there, a Whole 30 recipe book. And quite honestly, it's a little bit of a difficult diet to understand on the surface, so I understand why so many people have asked questions.
Let me first off say, this is not a Keto diet, this is not a fasting protocol, this is flat-out going to be my review of a specific diet. Now, the thing is, I have personal experience with the Whole 30 Diet and I think it's actually a pretty darn good program. Here's the thing. My wife suffered from autoimmune conditions. She had Lyme Disease, she had Hashimoto Disorder, which is a thyroid condition. So it's where her immune system attacks her own thyroid. It's an autoimmune condition.
But, anyway, let me talk about the Whole 30 Diet for a minute. The Whole 30 Diet is very similar to something known as an autoimmune paleo diet. The Whole idea is to eliminate inflammatory foods from the diet. So we're eliminating grains, we're eliminating legumes, we're eliminating things that would normally elicit any kind of inflammatory response within the body.
Now, with the Whole 30, she really does a good job of making it very, very paleo-esque, meaning you're still eating foods that taste good, you're still eating seeds, you're still eating things that allow you to get that taste and that crunch that you would want. You're just eliminating the foods that would normally cause inflammation. We're talking about dairy, we're talking about legumes, we're talking about grains, we're talking about gluten, and really, we're getting creative with how we make recipes.
So the autoimmune paleo protocol is a specific protocol where you not only eat these kinds of foods, but then you slowly indoctrinate foods that would be inflammatory to test your response. So I'm gonna give you an example of how it worked with my wife. Now, my wife didn't specifically do the Whole 30 Diet, she did more of an autoimmune paleo protocol, which is very, very similar to the Whole 30. So I can speak from experience here.
So what she would do is she would eat very, very bland. Extremely bland, non-inflammatory foods. I'm talking a pretty boring diet at first. We're talking like chicken without a lot of seasonings, chicken without any kind of fun stuff on it. We're like talking like basic chicken with salt and maybe a little bit of pepper. No cayenne pepper, because cayenne pepper's a nightshade and technically would be inflammatory. So it's very limited.
Then we would use things like tapioca starch. We'd use arrow root powder and we'd make thin crusts and things like that out of that, because you don't wanna be using any kind of grains. You don't wanna be using any kind of flours, you don't wanna any glutens. So very, very baseline. And then, what we would do, is slowly, over time, start indoctrinating foods.
So the first that she would test out is she would test out some egg yolks. So after a period of like 60 to 90 days of eating exceptionally, exceptionally clean, she would introduce egg yolks into her diet, and she would measure her inflammatory response. However, some of this could very much be perception. So that inflammatory response could be a placebo effect on the body. But if you introduce a food, you can measure your own response. Do you get bloated? Do you get a rash? Do you get a headache?
But as always, I just wanted to lay out the facts, let you know that it's not Keto, it's not fasting. So those of you that are on this channel that are doing Keto and fasting, it's probably not the diet for you. But it is a good way to start introducing carbs and seeing how your body responds to it, if you are wondering what your body's going to do when you eat something.
So, as always, keep it locked in here on my channel. If you have ideas for future videos or there's other diets that you're just interested in learning about and want an expert opinion on, I'm happy to provide the details. As always, keep it locked in here. I'll see you in the next video.
Your wife should do a video about her experience with Hashimotos. What she eats, any supplements she takes and how she feels.
Yes please Thomas!
My sister has it also
Great suggestion!!
I'd say seconded, but it's more like 47th'd.
That would be great if she would!
Whole30 is a 30 day elimination diet. After the 30 days, you start a reintroduction period to find out what triggers issues in your body. It is also a way to retrain your taste buds and brain to stop craving sugar. My husband and I did it and it has completely changed the way we eat.
Thanks for explaining. Never heard of this diet.
To me, the concept seems great and a nice "reset" before Keto or Paleo.
The problem seems to be the way they reintroduce foods. Nutshell, you need to reintroduce foods much slower than they recommend in order to tell which food(s) is causing you trouble.
My guess is that then the diet would take too long and would be less popular. Marketing over science wins again.
Consider consulting a Dr specializing in allergies for the proper way to reintroduce foods.
@@droosh You can reintroduce foods in your own timeline. The plan suggests waiting about 5 days between, but most people only wait 2-3.
I did whole30 before I got into intermittent fasting. It was a great way to reset my body and important in a mental way because it made me realise that most of the time I was just craving for carbs instead of being actually hungry. I lost like 10kg in 80 days (I think mostly because I stayed of the alcohol) and found out that soy products and pasta made me really tired. Imho whole30 is way harder to do than intermittent fasting, but definitely worth the try.
@@larissamerritt562 Exactly. And 5 days is not enough time to always show an allergic or inflammatory response. By the time one is triggered, you've likely added several more foods and then you can't tell which food is the problem. Caveat: I've not personally read the book.
That's my only quibble.
You missed a major cornerstone of the whole30 that completely changes the interpretation of the diet. The purpose of it is to eat Whole Foods. Unprocessed foods and foods in their whole form. While you can use a protocol to make it an elimination diet, the first generation of the program is designed t get people off of processed foods.
Hi Thomas, I started with the Whole 30 before I went Keto, it helped me to find out what triggert certain issues. I'm in my third year of keto and doing great, I call it Paleo /Keto since I don't use any products, trying to stay whole foods as much as possible.
The Whole30 diet has absolutely nothing to do with "30 foods" as stated in the video. The Whole30 Diet has to do with eating whole/paleo foods for 30 DAYS (again NOT 30 foods, you are able to eat much more that 30 foods on Whole30). It is NOT the same as the Autoimmune Paleo diet, although you can cater your Whole30 to the AIP diet. The Whole30 is not meant to be done for 90 days, it is meant to be done for 30 days, although you could extend your W30 if desired. All of this information on the W30 can be found in their numerous books or on their website.
My cousin and his wife both lost over 100 pounds each of them doing whole30. They both did it for 90 days as well
I love you Thomas! We got you! Your more than just another UA-camr to us! Your family!
I totally appreciate this review, Thomas! I would love to see more videos like this where you review products and programs. Super helpful. I always look at something and wonder, "What would Thomas think?"
Thank you for boiling this down. It is very interesting to see how one's body reacts to different foods after not having them for a while. Last week I had a small bowl of oatmeal after not having it for a very long time (over a year)... oh man, did it bloat me! (no wonder it's nickname is "bloatmeal"). No more oatmeal for me!
Good vid, Buddy. Trying the Gaps diet with my family pretty soon. Similar stuff.
I would really love to hear more about your wife's experience and how she healed her hashimotos!
So helpful. I have several autoimmune disorders and this looks promising.
Thank you for the input.
Great info and thanks for sharing. We are trying to figure out my wife's dietary needs for similar reasons. I'm pushing total elimination (beef and salt) and gradually adding things back but this seems easier to stick with (albeit slower I would imagine).
Please talk about specific workouts or machines to use while doing keto plan this month!
Hi Thomas, how about a keto alternate day fasting 30 day challenge?
Hey Thomas. Would be nice with a follow up vlog maybe. 🙏🏾 💪🏾🔥🤙🏾
Whole 30 is awesome because it helped me retrain my taste buds for a whole food diet. It helped my wife in the elimination part of it who has Hashimoto hypothyroidism and other autoimmune diseases. Those are the two main things Whole30 is about
I have autoimmune disease and i have problems with all the things you cut out of this diet so it works for me! But, i need to stay on it.
Thank you, Thomas.
Can you do a review of the Bulletproof Diet which says it's a "cyclical ketogenic diet". Thank you!!!
When you re-introduce foods; Do you think it a good idea to do it around a standard meal or should it be re-introduced more by itself?
good stuff, thanks. how about a review of the 80/10/10 diet?
This Whole 30 diet protocol works pretty well, especially if you pay attention to your body reactions
Can you please do a video on how often you do cheat meal, what do you eat when you have a cheat meal. Is it recommended to do a carb cheat meal to prevent messing up the metabolism? Also does longer duration or fast equal to more weight loss?
Can you do a video on what not to eat while having asthma struggling quite abit but really want to work out any solutions?
Hi, can you do a video on Paleo and share what you eat when you're not cycling keto?
Whole30 is not about 30 foods. What it is, is great though. I've been following whole30 for a long time. The books are super!
I also have hashimoto and hypothyroidism and I'm doing AIP-Keto on the 30 day challenge. I already knew that eggs and I aren't friends do me and my friend sausage are living it up. That with weekly 36+ hr weekly fasting plus one 18 hr to keep it under control. Hopefully then I'll lose some weight
@ThomasDelauer- Hey Thomas, Great video! Question- Could you break down what could be causing the excess fat storage in the oblique area? If it's not salt, what could be causing it? I'm down 35 lbs in 8 months from Keto and IF, but still holding onto weight there. I'm at about 12% body fat now, and wanna just kick that one problem area. Thoughts? Thanks!
Interesting Thanks
Hi Thomas. When I am tracking my Keto macros, should I include my collagen peptides as part of my protein macros even though it’s not a full amino acid?
CVo83 no. Account for calories but not protein
Would really like to see a video for someone (myself) who can't do eggs plz. . .
I have psoriasis and have been doing keto for fat loss for about 3 months. I have noticed that the lack of carbs hasn't changed my symptoms. I have researched the auto immune protocol, but I am wondering if I need to go to that extreme. For example if I cut out dairy for a few weeks could I figure out if that is the problem, or do I have to remove all the items in the AIP to make my symptoms go away? Also I have read that in some people just being obese can create enough inflammation to cause psoriasis to flair. Is there a chance that I remove all the items on the AIP, and my symptoms don't disappear until I get my weight down?
Is it possible for you to share AIP friendly stores in the U.S which also ships to EU too? :/ it's so hard to find AIP friendly stores
Please do a Video on FLAX SEEDS and if they lower or cancel your Testosterone
I have Hashimoto and I am currently working to help my Thyroid and cure it. I also have Vitiligo which can be a cause from Hashimoto. Currently I am using Selenium and Zinc to keep my Thyroid up. I can tell you that Keto and IF (I also do a 30-40h fast on sundays) does work wonders and I am pretty sure that one day I will cure myself!
I did aip for a long time and it works but After a while I went back to an American diet.
Thomas - what are your thoughts on the recent news last week, that chicken consumption increases likelihood of developing cancer. Please look into this ....
He Thomas I give Seminars on fixing autoimmune diseases in one visit
Would love to tell you about it.
Btw I live your vids
I LOVE Whole30, I have done it 5 times, really good, I love getting Tiger blood, we make it ourselves
I’m about to start but still researching about it. Do you recommend getting one of the books to understand better? If you don’t mi s sharing some tips for whole 30 zero knowledge beginners I’d appreciate. Thx!
What are your thoughts on recent research that says it isn't gluten people are becoming intolerant to, but residual chemicals from pesticides and herbicides in the wheat?
3 to 6 months is how long you leave a food and reintroduce it. Born clinic had me give up half a dozen items. In my case I had mild intolerances to them so 3 months for me. Then you reintroduce them back individually so that you know which one still bothers u
WENT TO THRIVE AND CROSS-REFERENCED A FEW PRICES AND YES , THRIVE WAS LESS EXPENSIVE . WOO HOO
Whole 30 changed my life it is totally sustainable.
What about a video about the RP diet? Everyone at CrossFit said this the best diet....
Hi, trying to do the KETO in italy (harder than it sounds) day 21, lost no weight at all... although i hyave changed shape, and look much better, still same weight on the scale and some belly... what can i doooo I also do fasting at least once a week
Yeah don't rely too much on the scale, it's always better to measure yourself cuz if you're working out you might be building muscle and that might be why it doesn't show on the scale even though you're losing inches. 🤔
Interesting
My Hashimotos was healed by adopting an Alkaline Vegan diet and multiple cycles of Hard dry fasting e.g. 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, 4 days, 3 days etc.
Can we have millets like foxtail millet in whole30 diet? Starchy veggies?
Millet is on the avoid list but starchy veggies are not. Don't go overboard on the super starchy stuff but in moderation they are Whole30 approved.
Can you review the gum diet?
do a video abut carb cycling but without the keto background
@Cali Girl i have been carb cycling for like a year and i love it but im really curious about his opinion on it
I would love to see a video of your wife’s journey.
Thank goodness Eggs are ok on whole 30 it’s my go too breakfast! I think whole 30 is amazing ! I would suggest following the whole 30 day by day video to follow each day it’s so helpful with the cofounder Mellissa. And get the whole 30 book/ cook book it’s your bible! It’s the best choice I’ve ever made and I’m a healthy person! Do it! It’s not easy but it gets better and better every day!
Yes, I know someone who did it and found out the symptoms he would feel are from nightshades. Which is terrible. Feel very bad for him...
Interesting, how did they find out about the nightshade reaction if they aren’t excluded on the whole 30?
That word. Baseline. It's what I did for years before I found this channel. I ate 1 thing for months. No salt no pepper. Added Himalayan salt months. Added pepper months. And so on. Took me 14 years to find out what was wrong. But I did it.
@Cali Girl You have no idea. Aside that. I consistently put pressure on my local internet providers to connect me to the fiberoptic network. For 8 years.
This not whole 30. It's not about 30 foods. Nor eliminating night shades.
Dr Gundry. "The Plant Paradox" comprehensive version.
I honestly get bloated anything I eat. I eat all clean sources but always get bloated. Why is it ?
Me too. I am finding if I eat primarily meats, sardines, herring, anchovies I do much better. BUT it is so hard to just eat that way. I have a reaction to all food these days. I'm fit and trim and eat healthy but this inflammation is all new in the last couple of years for me. No fun. Thomas is helpful
Hi Thomas.. does big mac with coke break fast? Thank you
Big fan of this channel but Whole30 does not mean you only have 30 foods to eat. It's supposed to take place over 30 days. Then after the 30 days you're supposed to reintroduce the other food groups into your diet. I think the best part of whole30 is honestly knowing what's in your food and cutting out all the processed crap out. After the first two weeks you go from forgetting about the food you can't eat to looking at all the food available to eat. There's also thousands of great whole 30 recipes online
What happened to her Lyme disease?
About eggs?
Thomas what’s a gut restoration protocol?
Lookup Dr Grace Liu aka Gut Goddess and her recommendations.
Thanks
What if u have rheumatoid arthritis and hypothyroidism BUT u aren't overweight? I'm underweight have no energy and wtf am I supposed to eat? I cant live on celery and water. 😪
Jeana Allison meat, lots and lots of meat and sweet potatoes
I appreciate your review but these are not accurate facts. There are way more than 30 foods you can eat...the 30 comes from the recommended number of days you eliminate the "inflammation" foods before reintroduction phase.
Thank you! There is a test for food intolerance test kit you can purchase and do on your own and send back to the company for results that might be helpful to some. We are going to do this in our family. Yorktest.com
Is the Keto diet long term sustainable?
Some people do but it all depends on you and how your body works. For keto you put your body through ketosis ( makes you burn fat because your not getting any carbs) but for long term that can be dangerous for your health of you don't do it properly.
Fasting bundle $35.99 *opens empty box*
Lol
LMAO!
Thats the same diet they do for people with multi food allergies to see what causes reactions wnd what doesnt and how severe, but they did that long before whole30
“…cheaper than most supermarkets.” 🧐
Anyone give it a try yet? Recommend or no?
Following a diet based on one's DNA please? Why would that not be the best option? Thanks
That would be ideal, but I doubt there's any genetic biologist dieticians out there yet.
@@joegt123 There are actually a lot of companies that will take your DNA and provide you with a detailed list of foods that are best aligned with your DNA. I got off Keto after doing mine.
I did the Whole 30 plan for a month and wish I didn’t come off of it. It had such an effect on me, I couldn’t believe it! I lost 10 lbs and 22 inches in 30 days! I have not had that kind of success with Keto & IF. It was truly a detox in every way, and I honestly felt like I should of had medical supervision. Lol!
Thomas you deserve the rank doctor or professor...
Incorporate not indoctrinate tommy
AKA = Elimination Diet
Omg slow down man!!!!
First

Isn't his wife first
Eat meat,leave the plants :-)
@Cali Girl works for me and many others.
You don’t know what you’re talking about. My wife followed this video and died.
