    Love videos like this! Most would have just replaced the alternator unit complete, including myself……. Videos like this give people the knowledge to test, and replace where needed welcome back Hatboy another excellent video 👌🏻👏🏻

    Yet another great video thanks. I think your camera shots are amongst the best I've seemn on UA-cam. And spot on topic series. This time of year is surely when to tackle any suspect electrical issues. Winter driving with its cold weather and short daylight hours will tax the battery and charging system when problems will be much more difficult to put right, especially if you have to work outside. Thanks and look forward to your next video.

    Great video!
    I have a Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v. 2003. My alternator is broken (brushes worn out)..
    The low charge light did not turn on. I don't think this Skoda series even has a low charge indicator at all! When the ignition is switched on, the battery light should be visible?? I noticed that it doesn't work in your Skoda either..
    Is it a factory fault or something else?

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Рік тому

      The battery light will go out very quickly if the battery is ok, if not it will stay on. I'll double check mine no you mention that :-)

    Very helpful video, what would be the cause of having no battery light on the dash? Also can be abit iffy to start sometimes, any help would be much appreciated

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  2 роки тому

      If the battery is in top condition the battery light may not appear, but as yours is having difficulty it may be a connection issue - check the earth to body/battery first then fuses and go on from there :-)

    Wow, one of the best instructional videos ive seen, great canera angles and step by step. My battery isnt charging so i checked alternator voltage and its only putting out 12 volts, i presume i need to replace it and its not just the regulartor?

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Рік тому

      A good battery should read 12.6V. Put your meter on it when it's charging and it should be around 14V either way (if not - new regulator). Do Rev the engine a dab first though to initiate charging. If all good, then question?: are you using a lot more power recently, such as de-mister, heated mirrors/seats, fog lights, fan on full, radio etc, etc as it is getting colder now and all this is used more which puts extra strain on the battery. So it's no surprise that it's winter when we see our batteries fail. If your's consistently reads 12V and struggles to start, change it, but if it starts ok, charges in range and everything works and it doesn't get any lower then you'll be ok for a bit longer. I've had batteries on cars that run like that for a few more years under the same conditions, but they need monitoring and do eventually fail just when you need them the most; on a cold wet morning going to work. Monitoring helps you know if they start to get worse and fail. If you don't want to monitor the bat all the time then get a new one for extra security:-)

    I fitted on of these alt to Mt Ford engine on my boat can I put a live straight to exiter or do I need diodes or a light in circuit many thanks wes

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Рік тому

      There are diodes inside the alternator to change the AC current produced to DC current which the regulator can draw off around12-14.5Volts of :-)

    • @wesleycains6111
      @wesleycains6111 Рік тому

      @HatBoyHarvey I fitted the exiter wire straight to alternator and seem to be charging OK at 14.1 v on tick over it just I was looking for info on Internet net and they a feigned the exiter wire needed diodes and lights but done it with just a light bulb in circuit

      Self generating alternator with a built in regulator, signal wire to dash, does it work, sure - fine then :-)

  • @jump3r522

    Hiya, alternator works only if I rev it but then carries on working after, what exactly is it?

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  Рік тому +1

      That is how they work. If you start the engine on idle and let it run the alternator often won't charge until you raise the revs over 2000 for a couple of seconds to initiate the charging circuit. Newer cars use smart charging to avoid this and serve variable charging levels dependant on battery condition which makes the battery last longer. or your belt is slipping

    hi hatboy i had washed my skoda fabia combi 2003 today by accident (didn't look closely) cleaning the bottom what happened then water came to my passenger side at the feet department just behind my glove box water dripping and not a bit that comes through the bottom cleaning and is that bad if water came in not fun of course 🚘 and our skodas can go in the car wash
    and your video remains interesting

    • @HatBoyHarvey

      that sounds like it could be the heater core leaking which is in the central area of the consul. have a look closer to check and also look in engine bay at the rear of the engine where the heater core connections are. If not, is the water coming in from the top part of the bulkhead or even the door?

    My car doesn't start up 1st time sometimes and randomly battery light comes on after start up maybe twice a month but then goes away after driving and voltage with car started its 13.7 i know it should be 14.4v thanks for the video will be changing my voltage regulator as its cheap and easy to do

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  8 місяців тому

      Measure the charge voltage at the alternator it should be higher with losses due to cable and connections. Test the resting charge of the battery, should be 12.6V then put a load on it - lights and fan on for 30 seconds and test recovery, it should return quickly if not new battery needed. A better method would be a crank test with a volt meter or a battery tester to check the condition of the battery. If the charge voltage was off a bit more, below 13.5V or above 14.5 Volts then look at replaceing the regulator :-)

      Clean up the terminals and measure again as they should be approx the same - not far off, maybe cable/connections. Battery of 12.6 12.7 Volts is a Good battery if it cranks OK 👌
