Zoozy G Lol don't feel bad. theyre talking about that Indian girl whose the main lead on that show Quantico. shes just breaking thru into U.S. film industry and her voice is rather raspy, but I wouldn't call it gold!
Extraordinary interview. Moreover, Viola, is pure joy and brilliance. Love to hear her speak, love to see and feel her act; and, love to hear her laugh.
Kareem is and has always been such a fiercely intelligent and thoughtful man, I'm not surprised at all he would conduct such a compelling interview. Kudos nonetheless. Nothing but brilliance on display here.
I saw the film last night in San Francisco. August Wilson would be proud of the work of Denzel Washington as an actor and a director. Viola Davis and the entire cast was brilliant. In my mind, we all have Troy Mixson, Rose Mixson, and Garbriel Mixson's in our families. I'm hoping that fathers and sons go see this film, and perhaps learn how to better communicate with each other. Fathers, please, help your sons become strong men. Sons, please learn the ways of your father ( good and bad) and decide what you will and won't do/be as a man. Having said that, I know it's not easy ( My son is 21 years old and father/son relationships can be challenging, but beautiful.) Thank you, August Wilson ( may you R.I.P.) Thank you Denzel Washington for being the man that you are. You and your beautiful wife Pauletta (another brilliant talented sister) have raised sons, and to me, you two are remarkable parents! Viola Davis, you are truly a woman w/ heart and soul, talented, and you make us sisters proud! Thank you Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for asking spot on questions! Bravo!
She was relevant wayyyy before Antoine Fischer. She had already been a series regular on two different tv shows and been in like 10 different films. She just wasn't doing all black films.
Well, maybe those were Kareem's questions and he wanted to make sure to get those in. Kareem is not a very charismatic public speaker, although, he's obviously super intelligent and quite well spoken. Another great, great former NBA player, Julius "Dr. J" Erving is quite similar to Kareеm Abdul Jabbar in that sense.
really seldom do we see such an insightful interviewer conducting such a refined and profound interview among all the bloated Hollywood superficialities.. I am deeply thankful for this video
This is a treasure trove. I absolutely loved what Viola said about Rose being a strong woman and choices. You see, we're all seeing so called "empowering" films for women. But, these stories are very one dimensiaonl and they show us successful women who get everything they want. They dont show us the messy, complicated, not so great side to women. Truth is, women can be just as complicated as anyone. But the audience wants to see a film that reassures them that women are superior and that fmeminism is about kicking ass all the time. It still taps into the feel good aspect of cinema. But Viola is brave to step into these roles. When she said "Rose is strong" I was like yessssss. Rose has very little choices, in fact no choices at all. You can't expect her to go from zero to hero in the play. She does the best she humanly can.
The number of dislikes on this compared to all the other videos that are uploaded on UA-cam just shows you that Denzel has such wonderful energy, you can’t hate on him in no way, shape or form. 🔥💯🙌🏾 my fav actor of all time, hands down!
Very nice interview. However, I cannot believe that the hollywood reporter actually had the audacity to have THESE three people in a room speaking and have terrible sound. I've watched many of your videos and I've NEVER heard bad sound. Very disrespectful of the calibre of talent in that room.
Hmm 🤔🤔 maybe I'm not catching the meaning of your comment.. But what I can say that it's a privilege to see three black celebrities sit in a room and have a discussion about the craft they were gifted with..
I've read the book. my favorite scene is when he says it's not easy for him to admit he's been standing in the spot for 18 yrs. as a 55 yr old woman who's been a stay at home mom for 24 yrs sacrificing all my desires, and battling diabetes, I feel like I'm not enjoying life
gemini Carolyn Would you have sacrificed your family to pursue those desires? How would you feel then? There's more desires where those came from. Chasing after happiness is neverending. Be proud of who you are and the choices you've made. I bet someone out there is happy you made the choices you did.
I don't think so because I grew up in an emotional and physically abusive neglectful foster home. just at 55 yrs old and trying to get back on that path I wanna get and to myself I need to get back on is frustrating.
gemini Carolyn You are only old as you feel. Don't allow the age mindset to get in your way. Small steps and you will get there. There is nothing like having it all. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Hey y'all superb folks were selfish not saying what Bergamot is, lol. For those curious about our culture, it's a jar of green or blue hair grease, lol! What a great interview. I really enjoyed it. Thank you.
I've always found it amazing, but not surprising, that someone who's had so much success in a certain field, can excel just about anywhere else given the opportunity. It's no surprise this legendary basketball player is also able to ask such introspective and profound questions. I find that type of drive and execution really motivating.
lol not at all. I'm going to read a card now. here is my question. they just humoured him cause its kareem. if that wasn't kareem, they would have eaten him alive.
Graeme ONeil I can understand where you are coming, but professional Artists like these dont "Eat Up", interviewers. Its very rarely that we catch them being hard in interviews, and its normally when the interviewer is crossing the line or being disrespectful. This interview is great because Kareem asked good questions and Viola & Denzel had great responses. Other than the volume, (a tech issue or mic issue ), this interview was very natural, easy going and interesting to listen to.
You folks should have seen Viola Davis in " Everybody's Ruby ", an Off-Broadway play at The public Theatre. This was in the late 1990s, no later than late 2000. She, the title character, stole the show from Felica Rashad.
KOBE #GOATBEAST!!!!!. I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THE PLAY, AS I WATCH FENCES. SO THE FIRST WORDS THAT CAME TO MIND, WAS POWERFULL! ALL MUST WATCH THIS GREAT MOVIE!!! PERFECT CAST, ALL OF THEM MOSTDEFINITELY!!! KAREEM ABDUL JABBAR, WOW JUST AS GREAT!!! I AND I'M POSITIVE ALOT MORE PEOPLE WOULD LOVE DENZEL WASHINGTON, KAREEM ABDUL JABBAR TO BE IN A MOVIE TOGETHER!!!
I have nothing but love and respect for this man off and on film.. I've Named my 18yr old son after him in his honor, sometimes I wish that I could tell him that personally..
a movie is made to express an emotion, and/or an intellectual argument of the state of things. That argument is not expressed in a 40 second interview, it takes the whole movie to do that.
One of the things that I thought about, me being a man, is that if Viola came to him and said I'm pregnant with another man. And what his response would be
I agree. It's like damn Jabbar you revealing everything with your big mouth! Luckily, I saw the play in Pasadena, California years ago. Laurence Fishbourne played Troy (Denzel) and Angela Bassett played Rose (Viola). Kareem asks questions assuming a lot of people have SEEN the play and already know the story. He's a knucklehead for that.
I always loved and respected Kareem, not only as a basketball legend, but as the highly intelligent man that he truly is. But the problem I have when he conducts interviews is that he invariably reads his questions for the interview from cards. In doing so, it makes the interview seem robotic and a bit tedious and vapid. In my opinion, he should cease reading his questions and be more direct.
Kareem Abdul Jabbar is just like Shannon Sharp, and most recently Stephen A Smith, but Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are speaking Dez Bryant talk. He (Kareem) tries to tie in race or direct the interview in a direction that is going to feed his default narrative... By even providing a glimpse into why he is by referencing every black athlete (which by today standards is dominanted by) feels his way or insinuating goes thru similar paths... Farther could be from the truth. Evidence? Denzel and Viola have an interpective on the intent of the story they played and the conclusion in their perception is truth. This is not about sending a message to White people/America, that this is how a Black family lives or the whys... This is just a struggling family dealing with a prideful lion who is the center of all attention dealing with the crookeds and the straights... Even if at many times it is self inflicted. This is just a struggling family coexisting with one another surrounded by not only the sins of the father, but also by his skewed percetion of fairness in circumstances due to his dealing with what he believes is racism. However, at the end (of the movie) a seed still blooms into a flower regardless of the weed that tries to choke the space around it. Much RESPECT for DENZEL & VIOLA!
So much greatness and excellence displayed in this interview.
So much.✨
omg When Viola davis Speaks I hear Gold
I concur!
I agree so articulate and really understands the play.
Zoozy G priyanka chopra

Wassup man, what made you come up with that name for your UA-cam subscription?
I saw the film last night in San Francisco. August Wilson would be proud of the work of Denzel Washington as an actor and a director. Viola Davis and the entire cast was brilliant. I wanna thank Denzel for putting this sista onto the Hollywood game. He jumpstarted her career in 2002 "Antoine Fischer", and she hasn't stopped yet.
She was relevant wayyyy before Antoine Fischer. She had already been a series regular on two different tv shows and been in like 10 different films. She just wasn't doing all black films.
Absolutely
Kareem is a great interviewer.
khaada1 he was reading pre-written questions. Anyone over 5 can do that.
davisismail1comcast Fuck you. What about THAT?
Well, maybe those were Kareem's questions and he wanted to make sure to get those in. Kareem is not a very charismatic public speaker, although, he's obviously super intelligent and quite well spoken. Another great, great former NBA player, Julius "Dr. J" Erving is quite similar to Kareеm Abdul Jabbar in that sense.
Kareem's intellect was never in question since his days at UCLA and never overshadowed by his "athletic prowess".
Yes!
Kareem displays absolute brilliance as a interviewer!
thank you for this amazing interview..... Brilliant! Bravo for Fences....Denzel and Viola are genius...
The GOAT interviewing 2 powerhouses
A FINE woman, and I'm always looking forward to see her act.
Never disappointing!
Great movie, and great actors! Viola Davis is amazing. There will never be another actor like Denzel Washington, so talented, and one of a kind.
My sister and I saw Kareem at the airport he was kind to us❤😊
LMAO!!!!!!!! @Denzel's comment at 10:50. And I must say that I adore Viola's expressiveness and tone of voice......very natural and soothing....

I lost count how many times I've watched this. The way KAJ is sky hooking these questions is a thing of beauty.
Absolutely brilliant interview. Felt the thoughtful questions in my bones.
I just came from the theater watching this movie! Yes, I cried. Very touching!!
Loved Viola Davis commentary. Her insight is healing. Great interview.
Viola Davis is quite beautiful and [still] should have played Nina Simone.
Thanks Kareem for adding an intellectual twist to interviewing process!
This is a very nice interview...
👏👏👏 Superb job! I was in tears during this movie because so much rang true that I've seen in others close to me and also me personally.
SoFitz J I appreciate this comment!
JUST CLASS - CLASSINESS & CLASSIC !!!!!
Loved this interview. The questions were different from a deeper place.
Wonderful interview! This film brought me to tears! It spoke to my soul! I can't wait to see the play live.
Kareem is a our national treasure...no bones about it.
Kareem! Could you interview the director and cinematographer of Moonlight?
I hear that, LOL. yeah
that was an awesome interview
GOAT interview
Powerful piece, its reality at its finest.
really seldom do we see such an insightful interviewer conducting such a refined and profound interview among all the bloated Hollywood superficialities.. I am deeply thankful for this video
3 awesome individuals. Thanx for this upload.
My favorite movie. The best choice of actors there. Congratulation.
GREAT FANTABULOUS

By the grace of God
I love this 😁
great interview! Mr. Abdul Jabbar, bravo!!!!!
I'm 4 years late. BEAUTIFUL JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!
This is a treasure trove. I absolutely loved what Viola said about Rose being a strong woman and choices. You see, we're all seeing so called "empowering" films for women. loved the interview
Linked to this interview after watching Viola and Tom Hanks talk, and it made me realize that Hanks was really out of his league.
Kareem..my hero since i was 10yo
fantastic interview ,i got to say Viola legs are beautiful !!
Classy.

I try not to let the age get in the way. I can't I have a 14 yr old aspergers son, I'm homeschooling, plus I need energy to get out and see the world.
i cryed so much man..
You know Denzel Washington is classy when he can cross his legs and GET AWAY WITH IT. Not one negative comment is aimed at him for doing that.
Wonderful piece! Thank you!
Viola is brilliant!
Such a good movie
Hey y'all superb folks were selfish not saying what Bergamot is, lol. For those curious about our culture, it's a jar of green or blue hair grease, lol! What a great interview. I really enjoyed it. Thank you.
A billion blessings
Loooooooooooveeeeee this interview!

I enjoyed that Kareem🤝.
What an amazing movie. Wow
AWESOME!KICKASS!

I was trying to understand the link lol. I’m only familiar with Bergamot tea 😩😩
Need to see this movie! :)
Fascinating
You folks should have seen Viola Davis in " Everybody's Ruby ", an Off-Broadway play at The public Theatre. This was in the late 1990s, no later than late 2000. She, the title character, stole the show from Felica Rashad.
Viola Davis: She spoke of a family model, No not a Sacrilege. There are some conversations that cannot be spoken of any other way.
Kareem voice wow, he should do videogames, or best audiobooks.
congrats! A great way to end 2016................................................................................
Denzel Washington Malcolm X is one of the best movies I have ever seen.
KOBE #GOATBEAST!!!!!.
I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THE PLAY, AS I WATCH FENCES. SO THE FIRST WORDS THAT CAME TO MIND, WAS POWERFULL!

Denzel is 61...
I have nothing but love and respect for this man off and on film..
I've Named my 18yr old son after him in his honor, sometimes I wish that I could tell him that personally..
Spielberg doing goodfellas. Mind blown.
Denzel look hyped as hell starring at Kareem.
mixed emotions on watching this film. Reflections of my father were deep in .
a movie is made to express an emotion, and/or an intellectual argument of the state of things. That argument is not expressed in a 40 second interview, it takes the whole movie to do that.

Denzal should Play Kareem Abdul Jabar !!

I hope so, its a third Oscar...I hope:D
Good conversation. Although scripted questions, they were poignant and Kareem did not get in the way...
FYI he wrote those questions....
VIOLA'S MIC IS NOT ON.. >:-/
Politics is like marketing it's everything
I had to stop watching the interview old Kareem Abdul-Jabbar up there spoiling the story!
But, the play was out 30 years ago.
I see neck mics, but Viola is all boom, what's going on?
Gone ahead Viola, show them pretty Black Leggs!
I always loved and respected Kareem, not only as a basketball legend, but as the highly intelligent man that he truly is. Much RESPECT for DENZEL & VIOLA!
Yes, definitely time for people of African descent; 400 years of slavery are over
Of course the play is didactic; lesson: family is the building unit/foundation of society!
Kareem don't even know where he at smh🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
Why is Kareem doing this?
I liked this video, but I think Phylicia Rashad or Tavis Smiley would have been better suited to interview Denzel and Viola.
Interesting but they could have used better sound for Denzel, and especially Viola. Hard to hear her.
Legends!
